Great shots Henry - the last one was a stunner! For anybody wondering why you set for 20 shots but ended up with 6-9 for focus stack, the camera will stop taking images once the focus reaches infinity. So you might set it for 20, but it reached infinity around 9; at least that’s the way my R5 works. Using it for macro is different in that 20 shots may not be enough - it is dependent on your aperture and the focus increment you set. On the Canon the focus increment has no relation to an actual length - it is a number from 1 (narrow) to 10 (wide) and the camera calculates the actual focus movement based on aperture at time of shooting; higher aperture values increase the focus shift amount, smaller reduces it. The tricky part of using the system is figuring out the increment to set. Mostly trial and error from what I’ve found.
Agree with your assessment, Terrance. Because of the trial-and-error factor, I've abandoned focus-shift shooting on my Nikon D780 DSLR, and simply use touch-focus in Live View when I want to focus-shift-shoot a landscape; it's much simpler and faster, at least for me.
Wonderful video Henry. That last shot is calendar worthy in my opinion! The wonderful golden light on the rocks in the foreground and mid ground is spot on!

I think that final image worked out really well. You got all the hills and crags poking just above the horizon, not always the easiest thing to do when your in a mad rush and chasing the light!
Number 2 is definitely great. Love everything about it. And you're right about having to be ready at a moments notice. No time to fiddle with the manual.

Good use of Focus Shift Shooting and excellent results. In order to save further time in fleeting light moments, add the Focus Shift Shooting to My Menu. Do this with all the features you use then they are all available in My Menu instead of you trying to remember what is in what menu. My Menu then becomes your personalised One Stop Shop of the Z7 features that you use.
Love ya channel Henry, down to earth, real world, out-in-the field trials and tribulations we all get to experience. I can't imagine that last image without the light, you nailed a banger mate, congratulations and worthy for a book or calendar. Thanks for another adventure and keep up the great work!
I think that focus shift is a great innovation, and thinking how far things have come from my Yashica Minister-D rangefinder camera of half a century ago, I can only shake my head in wonder. I just wish manufacturers could agree on what to call it! Fujifilm calls it "focus bracketing." And please don't think your skills are lacking in any way, Henry. Every week you gift us with images that have a distinctive style and send me reaching for descriptors like warm, mellow, and gorgeous, as well as awesome and spectacular.
You definitely nailed it with the final image Henry, simply stunning capture and loved the first image too. It’s a great feature to have on the camera and I’m sure you use it regularly now you have put the feature to use. A great episode this week and love seeing the heather in bloom
Focus stacking is the digital equivalent to what Group F 64 (Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, etc.) were doing to create the sharpest depth of field---Some times they would have to wait hours for the wind to stop for several seconds to take a landscape photograph.
That closing shot was amazing! You now have me more anxious than ever for the new Z I’m saving for. I look forward to using the focus shift feature out in the mountains of west Texas.
Beautiful golden light on the last shot, Henry. Just wondered how focus stacking would have worked, especially on the first shot, if a breeze had been blowing the ferns. Thanks, Henry, for another great video.
I have used this feature on my Panasonic Lumix G9 a few times. Lumix calls it Post Focus and it is a really handy tool that can be used to same time and get shots quicker and with less frustration. Thank you for sharing and reminding me about this feature. I need to use it more often!
It's good to know that event such an experienced and skilled photography as you can still discover sth new and isn't afraid to admit it. Photos as usual great. The final one outstanding.
My original D850 ( which is big and heavy ~ but must admit I miss) had focus stacking which was really useful. On the Z7's they call it as you say focus shift ~ again very useful for landscape and especially macro. Good topic to bring up ✅
I have the Nikon D850 and it does an amazing job of focus shifting. As you show us focus shifting is way faster than doing it manually. The issue I have is when photoshop blends the images. Sometimes it does a good job and occasionally it fails badly, which is disappointing for a premium software. The last shot is top drawer. 👍
You do know at the end of your video, there is a picture of you and a caption saying “click here to subscribe” but the font you’ve used all I see is “ dick here to subscribe “. Great video, and good message, three is in point in spending loads on a camera full of features and then not using them if they make life so much quicker and easier.
Great video Henry, and very timely. I have tried playing with Focus shift at home doing some macro shots and it works fine, but every time I try it when out on a shoot, it won't work. It just says that conditions are not right. I'm not sure if it's because I'm doing long exposure shots or what, I will have another play at home and see. Anyhow, both great shots, and now I must sort this issue out!! BTW, if any Henry followers read this and have any thoughts as to what I'm doing wrong, please shout. I'm shooting in aperture priority mode, sometimes manual. I'm back in the Lakes in November, and really looking forward to it!!

Great explanation - I've used focus-stacking a few times; but I'd certainly use it a lot more with a camera that makes it so much easier. Really enjoy your videos.
I find automated focus stacking much more useful for macros than for landscapes. For macro, you're so close to the subject that depth of field is next to nothing even at the smallest useable apertures. So 20 or 30 images might only cover a few inches, taking just a few seconds. OTOH I only need five images at most for just about any landscape at F/11 to F/14, which I could very quickly via touch AF on the LCD.
Forgot to say that the camera will stop once it’s captured all the focal points it needs - generally seems to be about 6-9 shots with my settings and depending on the scene of course! ☺️
@@HenryTurnerphoto with Canon, the actual number of shots depend on both the farthest distance the camera can detect and the focus interval distance you set, on a scale of 1-10. What those intervals mean in terms of actual distance, I've no idea. It likely depends on the depth of the actual scene. The last time I shot a close-up this way, I set for 20 exposures. I got all 20 but only the first 10 were useable, which was enough. Keep playing with it.

My new camera has that feature too, but I haven't used it yet. I think Canon calls it focus bracketing. I have great plans to try out many of the features that are new to me. As you said, we pay a lot of money for these cameras, might as well use what they give us.

I gave this a try a few months back with the 24-200 on the Z7 and yes this makes the 24-200 for Landscape an even more justifiable purchase,can you follow it up with your manual blending process, I'm guessing you don't auto stack if printing.. great shots, would like to see some large prints of these...

I'm enjoying the focus bracketing in my Canon R7 and it will compile them in camera. I've mostly used it for bugs but I'm interested in trying it for landscape.
Great video and shot at the end. You make an excellent point about being able to set up your gear fast or you could miss the shot. But this is exactly why I don’t use a tripod or bother with focus stacking. Because when the light changes fast sometimes I’ll see a better composition or one that adds to the story and I can move and shoot quickly. If for some reason I do need a tripod I’ll use my pack, tree or a rock to steady my camera. This is what’s great about photography we can all have our own unique style.
Am I missing something (I'm OLD and still shoot film) but if you want everything sharp through the whole focal range just stop your lens right down to 22 (or further if you're me and shooting large format). The idea of focus shifting seems like fun and I suppose with a fast lens wide open you could get some interesting results but if you just want the whole world sharp - stop down !

My Canon R5 will stop taking shots when the focus reaches infinity so you will generally not get 20 shots. It’s a different matter if using the function for macro photography where 20 shots may not be enough.

I am confused - using hyperfocal on 24mm at F11 you would have got everything from 90cm to infinity in focus without stacking?
The camera app on my phone will do focus bracketing and do the stacking as well. I really should learn to use it more.

Hi Henry, you can also do it on your Olympus omd em1 kii. You have bracketing and focus stacking available for some of the pro lenses.
As far as I know it works with all m43 lenses. And you also get twice as much depth of field as the crop factor is two.
