I just wanted to drop you a quick note to say thank you. Your aquascaping videos have been a real lifeline for me. A while back, I was in a pretty dark place, struggling with depression. I couldn’t seem to find anything that brought me joy or peace. Then, I stumbled upon your channel and got hooked on your aquascaping projects. Watching you transform a simple tank into a breathtaking underwater world was mesmerizing. It gave me a sense of calm and even inspired me to try my hand at aquascaping. But then I saw your new hairline and have been pushed back into that dark place
Portuguese fishkeeper here! I have to say, I've been in to hobby for less than a year, and my tank is doing really well with lots of microfauna. Also, all the plants I've ever planted in it are alive and thriving, with no deaths. I don't know, maybe it's a portuguese water thing 😂. Love your vids, chris!
Damn I'm here after a long time and I gotta say that's a killer look! Also congrats on your wedding! Edit : You still react to all your comments! Proud of you for keeping your word from the 10K subs range xD
That first thing is a bryozoan. It's a close relative of corals, and does basically the same thing. Forms small colonies of filter feeders, with calcified exoskeletons forming an extensive shared structure. VERY hard to maintain in an aquarium, but really neat.
And for those of you wondering, I found an identical looking species in the local river water in the northern indiana wetlands. You do not need to be in portugal.
Yo olive been gone for a year but I used to watch you like 1-4 years ago and you've stayed Relevant, love ur vids and imma get back to watching you every Wednesday
@@FishForThought maybe another one of those ecosystem videos I really love those ones the video that's coming to my mind is when you went out to the ocean and to like a River pond and you try to see if there's much of a difference between ocean water ecosystems and non ocean water ecosystems which I really love that video it was awesome
It's true, I'm from Portugal and when i started my three tanks, i found microorganism colonies within the first month. The water is pretty acidic in some parts of the country, a lot of the tap water comes from natural springs that are surrounded by granite, so the mineral levels are pretty good without any significant levels of heavy metals. Also the levels of chlorine are almost non existent. This is mostly on the center region, the closer you go to the cost the worst the water parameters are usually.
5:00 NO WAY HAHA THAT'S MY POST! I knew one of my stupid posts will be in one of your videos eventually 😭😭 I didn't make that for the plants, I made it for the substrate. It was new substrate that I put into one of my established tanks so BB will grow on it since I was gonna set up a new tank 😅
QOTW - only 1 wedding and it's already happened. My only male cousin on my father's side. He and his husband had a beautiful wedding with alpacas at the reception! It was awesome to get to pet and hug the alpacas ❤
Your two best options for hair are... - Get some gel, and mess around. Just play around in the mirror until you start to find something you like, and work it through. - Go to a salon / barber and say "you're the expert, make me look good". But you of course are taking somewhat of a risk doing that. Since you're already married - as long as your hair grows quickly, I think it's worth trying.
This FTR makes up for me going to the pet store yesterday and all their fish being in quarantine. It was super sad. I wanted some more neon tetras as I rescued a single neon from a tank someone was going to toss, its pretty lonely right now. They still were not selling fish for another 3 days. I did go home with a pure white leopard gecko that just finished their quarantine instead named snow. I already had a terrarium waiting to be set up. So far she's been doing great!
@@FishForThought She's been very happy and active at night! During the day she is usually in her hide laying in what I have read to be the sploot position. I almost thought she was dead but it turns out she's just very comfortable.
I’m a brand new subscriber and am in the process of prepping for my very first fish tank ever. I am scared lol. I really don’t know anything except what I’ve learned on various TH-cam channels, so we’ll see how it goes. Thanks for helping me learn!
I've had those hydroids on my tank too before. At first, I thought they are fungi, but then I saw their cilia move (which I thought was a mushroom cap at first). They disappear after a while though... After much searching, I'm quite certain that they are Cordylophora caspia. They came from brackish and freshwater around the Caspian Sea, but they already spread worldwide by the early 19th century.
I had those on an assassin snail I got with some plants I bought and found it, thought it was dead, almost threw it away, threw it in a glass of tap water before throwing it away, and lo and behold it wasn't dead!! and I was shocked. Put her in my aquarium and in a short while noticed those on her shell. Looked them up and found out what they were. I was so happy. About a year or so later after a move I decided to get a new tank and start over. Derp. Anyhoo, I had this thermometer that showed the water temp at about 68° Kept buying heaters and it never could get into the green zone. I would check to Mahe site the thermometer worked by putting it in got water and it would go up and putting it in cold water and it would go down, so I assumed it worked. I finally got a heater with a thermostat. It showed my temp at 88.5° my thermometer so showed 68° I thought I had another broken heater. FINALLY I researched how to test your thermometer and learned how to find its cold set point which should be 0° anything under 0° is how far off accurate your thermometer is. Sad story, over the years I lost Neons I thought due to Neon disease. Ottos, Bettas, Chinese algae eaters and my assassin snail the Bryzoas. It's so sad it breaks my heart when I think it was all my fault for not learning the cost l correct way to test my thermometer and I lost fish due to I'm assuming, heat exhaustion. Now I leave comments about it because I was testing my thermometer but I wasn't testing it correctly. Always test your equipment reverb the equipment used for testing. My fish are now thriving again. I have lots of baby assassin snails and fry and Happy fish. Sad lesson learned.
No way! I got the same thing! Only now that I found out they were some rare freshwater critters. Mine hitched hiked on a water wisteria I bought from a pet shop 2 years ago. At first I thought it was hydra or some variant of it so i tried real hard on extinguishing them but they persisted, hiding in the dark spots in the tank most times attached to plants, sometimes on hardscape. I know they are still in there and now that i think about it, they never really been a problem.
I have a reprint of an aquarium book originally published in 1938. It talks about growing plants in trays as an alternative to planting directly in the substrate. I guess nothing is completely new.

Got a 72 gallon aquarium still deciding what to stock with heavily leaning towards community tank 1 fish on my radar is the rainbow shark but that is just 1 fish since they are aggressive towards other sharks if anyone had ideas let me know i have a few already still have to set up tank and cycle so will be awhile. Most likely going for heavily planted Walsted method so probably steering clear of cichlids.

“put an aquarium in my bathroom” *shows picturesque aquascape* I did not see that coming “They’re not overstocking this tank” But they have a single white skirt tetra in a tank that’s too small… (^ glass half full vs half empty)
I'm currently setting up a 5 gallon aquarium for either shrimp or beta or both and I'm about 150 bucks in and still need plants and fish and a CO2 system 😅 I'm like halfway there 😅
Qotw: no weddings (unless someone has a surprise wedding, I guess,) but I am going to the ocean for a week or so. It's extra exciting because I've been to the camp before but I was sick for most of it last time.
Hey Chris, do you think adding 6 pepper corys to a 20 high with 6 guppies and a dwarf gourami would be overstocking? Tank is well planted with some tannins. Parameters are okay. Really just worried about bioload and space.
YOU GOT ME INTO FISHKEEPING!!! i really love your channel, but i have a question . i have a tank its about maybe 5-6 gallons and there were three guppies. they were all males because i didnt know how to controll all of the birthing and stuff😭 but i was told it would be okay, and i was going to get a bigger tank in the future. i dont know if its because of the tank size, fighting over food, or something else. i have plants and do regular water changes. i got them last week (they are all male guppies) and one of them has been showing signs of aggression, hes been chasing the other fish and head butting his reflection, so i tried to keep the lights a little dimmed, but ofc that only helped with the reflection. after one of the fishes died, i didnt know what to do. i separated them, but they are schooling fish. neither of them are eating after separating them temporarily because my mom is out of town, and i dont want to put the two together because i dont want them to die😭 (i have two betta tanks and they have lived for about 5 months) I NEED ADVICE BECAUSE IM NEW TO THIS
maybe some more decor and plants for hiding. They aren't really schooling fish but do like to be in groups. Increase group size will help with aggression too
@@FishForThought ohhh i thought they were schooling fish😭 thank you, though! and the fish are doing okay for now! and you are helping me understand and learn more!
That almost empty tank is a biorb (made by oase a German company). They are expensive for such small tanks as they are acrylic and marketed as high end designer tanks. They aren't easy tanks to maintain and plant though. Kind off sad since the bigger aquariums that oase makes are user friendly and off high quality for mass produced tanks.
Guys I have a question, I have a 55 gal and I won’t to put a 10 gal under it for a grow out/ shrimp tank but idk how to connect the two. I’m guessing something like a sump but they’re confusing and I can’t find any good fish keeping forums to help.
QOTW: Going to one wedding, and flying to the other side of the world to attend. Be nice to see people - haven’t been back since 2016 - but not looking forward to the flight.
Portugal: stupid great tanks when they show up Me: *cries in not even being able to cycle tap water for 2 MONTHS with like 4 kinds of conditioners without it k1lling my shrimp and moss balls*
personally enjoy the unkempt hair look but lookin' fancy right now. QOTW: Slowly creeping up on 40 and aging out of wedding season...so none. Everyone I know is either already married or...probably never will be 😅
QotW: One, i think it’s the first wedding i ever got invited to (I don’t have many friends and the few are not the types that marry). My cousin will get married and I’m already nervous 😅 still got a month for getting clothes xD
QOTW: I am a wedding videographer so I've already been to 9 weddings this year, with 3 more planned before the end of summer. (It was a busy spring lol)
Bro. What do I do, I spent 500 dollars on these expensive shrimp from Mauritius possibly the only in captivity in the US. Then suddenly a disease swept through the tank leaving every single animal in it dead, even the small animals such as cyclops which I had a large colony of. 😢 advice??
Hopefully none I've already been to two funerals 💀 I'd go to Chris's tho id defo bring some bloodworms forget flowers and cards when you could get fish supplies

i really love your channel, but i have a question . i have a tank its about maybe 5-6 gallons and there were three guppies. they were all males because i didnt know how to controll all of the birthing and stuff😭 but i was told it would be okay, and i was going to get a bigger tank in the future. i dont know if its because of the tank size, fighting over food, or something else. i have plants and do regular water changes. i got them last week (they are all male guppies) and one of them has been showing signs of aggression, hes been chasing the other fish and head butting his reflection, so i tried to keep the lights a little dimmed, but ofc that only helped with the reflection. after one of the fishes died, i didnt know what to do. i separated them, but they are schooling fish. neither of them are eating after separating them temporarily because my mom is out of town, and i dont want to put the two together because i dont want them to die😭
(i have two betta tanks and they have lived for about 5 months)
I NEED ADVICE BECAUSE IM NEW TO THIS
maybe some more decor and plants for hiding. They aren't really schooling fish but do like to be in groups. Increase group size will help with aggression too
@@FishForThought ohhh i thought they were schooling fish😭
thank you, though! and the fish are doing okay for now! and you are helping me understand and learn more!
No weddings planned on my end, congratulations on yours!🎉
tyty!
That almost empty tank is a biorb (made by oase a German company). They are expensive for such small tanks as they are acrylic and marketed as high end designer tanks. They aren't easy tanks to maintain and plant though. Kind off sad since the bigger aquariums that oase makes are user friendly and off high quality for mass produced tanks.
true they look like a headache to work around the scape with
@@FishForThought My LFS got so fed up with them that their biorb showtanks are now decorated with the biorb decor but have no water and fish in them.
6:20 - I’m sitting on the throne at work watching reviews of fish tanks in bathrooms
hahaha that's how it's done
SHEESH CHIRS LOOKING FRESH OUT HERE.
ayyyy
Guys I have a question, I have a 55 gal and I won’t to put a 10 gal under it for a grow out/ shrimp tank but idk how to connect the two. I’m guessing something like a sump but they’re confusing and I can’t find any good fish keeping forums to help.
Hey, just curious, is a 2.5 gal tank enough for a betta? Just want to know, cuz I have one betta in one rn. Let me know what I should change!
STOP CHRIS ARE YOU A LINKIN PARK FAN?????????? THATS SO HYPE‼️‼️‼️
QOTW: Going to one wedding, and flying to the other side of the world to attend. Be nice to see people - haven’t been back since 2016 - but not looking forward to the flight.
awesome!
When I got hydra i just left it cause all i have are snails rn and they just went away after a few weeks
Having filter feeders in a tank is a goated strat for clear water.
truuue but if the water gets too clear they might die off
@@FishForThought so true….
I didn't even see this first thing in the morning in my recommendations
c'mon what is youtube doin!
I liked this video because of the linkin park poster
No weddings, no funerals ever never
Still waiting for you to cover the dude grew weed in the substrate of his beta tank
What really?!? Is that safe for the fish if so.. go ahead 😅😂
i gotta find that one haha
Portugal: stupid great tanks when they show up
Me: *cries in not even being able to cycle tap water for 2 MONTHS with like 4 kinds of conditioners without it k1lling my shrimp and moss balls*
personally enjoy the unkempt hair look but lookin' fancy right now. QOTW: Slowly creeping up on 40 and aging out of wedding season...so none. Everyone I know is either already married or...probably never will be 😅
I only know a fish died in my tank after a few days of not seeing it. Lol

QOTW, No weddings for me (that I know of) At my age it is more funerals than weddings.
8:25 THATS ME!!!
QotW: One, i think it’s the first wedding i ever got invited to (I don’t have many friends and the few are not the types that marry). My cousin will get married and I’m already nervous 😅 still got a month for getting clothes xD
A Maplestory reference. Bro. Thats my high school obsession.
yeah same! I still play lmao
@FishForThought it got so crazy compared to my mid 2000s time. We only had 4 classes way back then! Now there's so many
My place is having a water restriction now because the pipes exploded. Now my fish tank water levels 👇😢. Still gonna take another 7 days
It will keep them happy till your pipes are fixed at least
oh boy :((
Ha, I love my Zojirushi appliances singing to me. All appliances should sing, not beep.
true
Love your channel
tyty!
Can you put a nerite snail plus some cherry shrimp in a 2.5 gal
QOTW: I am a wedding videographer so I've already been to 9 weddings this year, with 3 more planned before the end of summer. (It was a busy spring lol)
daaaang
@@FishForThought Gotta pay for that hardscape somehow 💪
HI CHRIS!!!
heyhey!
Congratulations Chris! I also like the new look. (QOTW: None that I know of)
tyty!
I use pento, love it
Bro. What do I do, I spent 500 dollars on these expensive shrimp from Mauritius possibly the only in captivity in the US. Then suddenly a disease swept through the tank leaving every single animal in it dead, even the small animals such as cyclops which I had a large colony of. 😢 advice??
I was invited to like 3 or 4 this year but could only make it to one cause all my friends live like 500 miles away 😢
Portugal mentioned 🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹
No weddings, the only one i got invited for so far is in another country :D
does anyone know if he has any suggestions with snapping turtle aquascaping? any strong plants that can handle the waste from the turtle?
Qotw: I actually am going to attend my first wedding very soon so great timing for the qotw chris ;)
Hopefully none I've already been to two funerals 💀
I'd go to Chris's tho id defo bring some bloodworms forget flowers and cards when you could get fish supplies
Also getting married soon! Your hair looks great!
ty and grats!
