One of the reasons tifo is so good is because they do more technical videos like this. Most football analysis just focus on positioning and tactics and energy but not as much the technical footballing side
Difficult thing to properly discuss, because there are so few people who actually understand it, that can also articulate it, and use the right imagery for us all to understand it sufficiently. But you’re right, these dudes do it brilliantly
Ward Prowse is a technical magician in dead ball situation. Not only he can score goals, he can pick a pass or deliver dangerous crosses for his teammates to benefit from. A good signing for West Ham.
Ward Prowse free kick, onto the freakishly large head of Maguire and into the net to win the Europa league for West ham 2-1. Put your bets down now lads
I never cared about free-kicks all that much, however this was super interesting. Fascinating to see his stats in detail and compared to average, in conjunction with the input regarding biomechanics. Really enjoyed this video.
It's strange because 5 or 6 years ago, everyone knew that JWP had great set piece delivery but it was so predictable that it never came off, but all of a sudden, they started going in.
I swear you missed the most important bit bowlers who can hit over 80mph in cricket do so with a flick of the wrist which times with the momentum of arm. Looks to me like he slightly flicks his ankle in a similar way. Slight upwards clockwise rotation. I bet he could show you next level mobility with it probably in how quick he can make it move.
This what i always tell everyone: focus on your inside shot, go back to the basics. Stop all that hitting it on the instep or on the bone nonsense. You are not Juninho or Ronaldo and even they mastered the basics first.
Everton tried to do something similar with one of their players running back to the goal line to clear it. Might've worked if they hadn't cocked up their timings lol
what's the rest of him like as a footballer? Not watched southampton play, 3-4 goals a season is nice but doesn't make you a starter. People only ever talk about his free kicks.
Besides his set piece ability, his stamina/fitness is also a big asset of his game. Not only does he not stop running, but he also rarely misses a game.
But even he, as one of the best free kick takers in the world, is only scoring 2-4 FKs every season. Is it really worth having someone like that or better to put your cash into a better all-round player, creator or even, as in a previous Athletic video, someone who can throw the ball into dangerous positions?
very similar but with bent plant leg. He varies his upper body. The strong similarity is the rolling of the plant leg ankle after kicking it. This commentator was wrong about the forces on the leg after kicking - at this moment he is effectively weightless so no issues on the body. We are meant to rotate. If you don't roll the ankle you put stress on the hip and knee. Messi's plant leg is at a similar angle, only with more bend at the knee. Occassionally his plant leg flares up out of the way like JWP but not every time. Bending the leg allows messi to do paneka free kicks because you can adjust the amount of spin you put on the ball vs the amount of direct force, whereas a straight plant leg is more consistent.
come on Tifo i am fond of your videos and analyses but, i believe this one gone too far >>> mechanics and teaching it to future generations !!! come on people, there is TALENT and there is practice not much to be taught
why can't he whip it like Trent or KDB from the RHS in open play though? everything about this video suggests a player with more or less perfect technique.
you are making the wrong quetion! why now day player are so bad at freekick! back then we so many freekick taker and more scary the today player! i remember back then for esample at ac milan they have ronaldinho, pirlo, seedorf and beckham ready to take freekick, and any one know that was gol and the team and the keeper was pissing on his pant! now days know one is scare to take gol from freekick unless is james ward-prowse taking on it! understand what i mean?
He said in a video with ChrisMD that he only takes 5 or 6 per day, both to not wear himself out, and to kind of replicate the pressure you get in a game.
grown men shocked to learn if you practice something daily for two decades, you'll become really good at it. Then surprised again to learn that studying your opponents reveals things about them you can use to your advantage. There, saved you 9 minutes.
I don't understand the hype for him. He's good, yes but he's not that good. I agree though 40M for him is an OK amount. I would've tried for lower cause this guy is a one trick pony. His assists for Southampton last season is only 5 across all competitions. He scored 11 goals, and his completion rate is only 85%. For a guy that is supposed to be very good at passing and crossing that's not high enough.
That's the danger of looking at stats out of context though and not taking into account the player's role in the team. As a midfielder who is relied on to create chances a completion rate of 85% would actually be very good. In the same way Lindelof's pass completion of 93% does not make him the Premier League's best passer, Kevin De Bruyne's (perhaps the best passer all things considered) 73% does not make him a terrible passer.
@@dster345 yeah that's probably another reason. The more creative midfielders take more risks when passing, which leads to a lowering of pass success rates

And their game analysis before the match.

Past 5 seasons he’s scoring 1 in 5 that’s incredible.
You know you're proper football stato when you sit and watch a 10 minute video on how a player takes his free kicks. Only on TIFO, goat content
Wait, most people don't watch 10 minute videos on one bloke's free kick? XD
He’s gonna break Beckham’s record.
Bend it like Ward-Prowse
Whirl it like ward prowse
How far is he from Beckham. Also, what age did David leave EPL?
Whip it like Ward
@@kingmonde he's 1 freekick goal behind beckham

Great to see Liam on camera - always insightful on the Athletic Football Tactics pod!
Saying JWP is not much simpler than saying James Ward-Prowse
Yeah, true that. 😂
It's actually harder, more syllables.
If you pronounce the W as "Dub" - problem solved. haha.
JWP is like
Jay-Double-You-Pee, so it is definitely longer
@@wnd9434 only easier to write but only if you know the context
This is great content. Football journalism should support grassroots knowledge and development. Well done 👏🏿

Looks like Maguire will sit on the Manchester United subs bench so session.
Truly a magician

This video just opened my eyes to a whole knew concept in football that i never really paid attention too. Thank you.❤
Great video from the Goblin King, many thanks x
It's strange because 5 or 6 years ago, everyone knew that JWP had great set piece delivery but it was so predictable that it never came off, but all of a sudden, they started going in.
He stopped aiming at the inside half of the post. Started aiming for 2-3 feet inside the post and under the bar instead.
He's like Robben. Predictable but unstoppable.
you guys should do more biomechanics and kicking technique videos. gonna try that 8 to 2 o clock
Why is the tifo so good at making videos?
This is a perfect video for aspiring free kick takers

He's a modern English Juninho Pernambucano.
I'd say modern Beckham. Juninho was on a different level in terms of versatility
Juninho, Koeman and Mihajlovic are all 3 on another level
Juninho was the most gifted free kick taker I’d ever seen
After watching this video, I believe he has the most optimized free kick form in history, simply from a pure striking of the ball perspective.
Juninho? Bekham? just asking
@@looptimelapseoptimized? no
Juninho Pernambucano is the greatest free kick taker of all time. It's not even a debate.

Beckham was way better than JWP at set pieces
Even pep said he is the best in taking free kicks
brave
Did you need Pep to tell you that though? Everybody knows this.
@hfc3696 good point. I forgot about those guys 😅
Was the conclusion really "the more you hit it on target, the more likely you are to score"
Excited to see what he how he does at West Ham ⚒️⚒️⚒️
What is the distance between the ball and the planting foot
maybe it is free kicks that are good at james ward-prowse
gorgeous napoli sweater. where can i cop one?
So basically JWP’s plant leg is dummy thick ?
Reminds me of that guy Liverpool signed once.. didn't work out too well.
Manchester United should've brought him instead of Mount, he would be a great partner to Casemiro
Lol imagine losing your head and then having the ability to decide to hit it top bins form a freekick.
because he trains.
definitely the only player who does
nice, it would be interesting to compare against Juninho Pernambucano.
there is really no comparison
I mean, yeah :D But more the technical differences.@@tyrellking6332
It's the whip he puts on it makes it a nightmare for goalkeepers
Practice makes perfect.
Already gave two assist in his first match for west ham
"There aren't many footballers who can claim to do something better than Lional Messi on a football pitch..." Ummm, defenders and goalkeepers? 😅
Do this for Juninho Pernambucano, the real
That's Ronaldinho's technique perfected
This what i always tell everyone: focus on your inside shot, go back to the basics. Stop all that hitting it on the instep or on the bone nonsense. You are not Juninho or Ronaldo and even they mastered the basics first.
May sound mad, but is it worth not having a wall when he's on a free kick?
Everton tried to do something similar with one of their players running back to the goal line to clear it. Might've worked if they hadn't cocked up their timings lol
Hopefully he scores a few for West Ham
Great FK taker
Change the "Why" in the title to "How"! I don't care exactly why, i care how, because I want to replicate that
still baffle me when southgate choose henderson over him. in tournament like World cup and Euro, u need a specialist FK like JWP.
what's the rest of him like as a footballer? Not watched southampton play, 3-4 goals a season is nice but doesn't make you a starter. People only ever talk about his free kicks.
He also takes corners 😅
he,s a good player.he has been among the best chance creators in the prem from open play the last couple of yrs😂
He's a decent, premier league quality midfielder with world class set pieces.

Has been the Captain, heart and soul of Southampton for several years
