  • 8yr old Dorothy was about to surf with her friends in hawaii when a dead fish and a big shark showed up in the shallow waves! Garrett decided they shouldn't surf but he paddled out anyways. A little bit later, Dorothy paddled out all by herself to join him!
Be safe out there people. Be smart. Learn more about sharks and wildlife so you can understand them more and fear them less.
Much love and happy adventures together!

I'd say overall, yes sharks are amazing and very misunderstood. However, in this instance, I would say that the shark you encountered seemed to be exhibiting abnormal behavior. That mixed with the fact that surfboards cause your shape to resemble that of a seal or sea turtle would probably be a good reason to not go out in the water at that time. Plus the water was murky closer in and it was the evening when the shark would become even more active.

I totally get the struggle you are feeling. Every day we try to teach our kids to be brave and go after adventure. I love loving life to the fullest and want that for my kids, but many times feel like that while I am their biggest cheer leader, I can also be the first one to hold them back without really meaning to. You are doing such a great job. We want all the happiness in the world for our kids, but anything happening to them is also our greatest fear. I love how you handled it.
When I was young, my family LOVED that I had that brave heart, much like Dorthy. We would go on a canoe trip, and I LOVED to swim on the river trips more than float them, and my uncle would say things like, “Better get back in, there are snakes all in this river.” I would just shrug and keep on swimming. At that moment I became his favorite niece. I told mom when I was in my 20s that I really wasn’t afraid because I knew my dad and uncle would never let anything happen to me, and that if I really was in danger, I felt, they would have forced me to get out of the river. Snakes didn’t fear me, because I felt 100% safe with them around. Much of my bravery came from really knowing they were there for me, but it really had shaped me to not be afraid of risks as an adult. The way you handled that is having a powerful affect on Dorthy, and you are helping to shape her to be so brave. 🥰

  • @Dan-Black

7:27: "What is the moral of the story here?"
    Calculated risk.
You weigh all the factors and make the best decision you can based on how much risk there is and how much you're willing to take, sometimes being extra careful to account for higher risk. As the kids get older, they can start taking more calculated risks. From your story here, it's clear that Dorothy is starting to get that, to take various factors into account, to analyze the situation logically, objectively, and safely, and then to make decisions based on all the factors -- and to accept the responsibility associated with the risk. You're also obviously teaching her that you can't always make riskier decisions for others the same way you can make them for yourself.
I'd say you're definitely teaching your kids right. Even if a decision turns out to be wrong now and then, or the risk catches up to you, you're still teaching them excellent ways to deal with those situations and to live their lives fully and responsibly but without unnecessary fear.

Dorothy is a little girl. Way to young to make a life and death decision. As cool as Garrett seems to be, he is first and foremost her father. The only thing he taught her was when it comes to protecting her he has to "think' about it.

Part of what you do is educate your children about the animals and sharks are most active and feed most at dusk and sunrise, so you may want to explain that it is best to not surf during those times, since that will increase the chance of an accidental shark bite.

I agree that you could not take the risk of having children not your own surf with a sighted shark. You explained that to Dorothy and you said it would be better to wait for another time. I do not think Dorothy should have joined you. You had told her not today. You maybe should have taken your own advice, yet you are a adult. I would explain this to Dorothy that she is to respect your answers and follow through. Being a parent also means taking care of yourself and making sure your around to be there for them. That did not seem like a big shark, not like a great white or something, not sure how much harm it could have done. Lesson: Have your child repeat what they understand your said. Bottom line your had said, "No, not today" for her and her friends.

My main worry more so than the shark, is did she get permission from Mum to leave the house all alone and meet Dad out in the middle of the ocean? Because if she got out there that quickly before either parent knew her whereabouts, that's more concerning than a possible shark bite.

I just recently discovered this channel and so far, from a few I've seen, my favorites are when Dorothy goes rad to the highest power! God! I love how brave this little girl is! My top 3 faves are
#3 - When they're in Bahamas & a scared tourist saw this little girl diving and entering a scary cave (Tourist: She can! So, I can!) & playing on a tide pool.
#2 - When she got injured & had a huge bleeding wound on her knee, cried, but still surf after. LOL
#3 - And THIS!!! Best part is when the dad was surprised with " Hey dad!" when surfing, followed him, never afraid of the sharkie. LOL
Since this family is already on their way to finally resting and stopping the adventures their children were used to, I hope they decide to settle on a beach (Hawaii [def not 😢, they just left that] or Bahamas) or the tropics 'cause I think in the sea is where they belong, especially Dorothy. THE WAVES = DOROTHY. So, I'm crossing fingers for her.
