    I love Source Direct. ‘Shimmer’ is one of their greatest pieces of work. Jim without a doubt, is my favourite producer of all time in the genre; & that’s after 25 years of studying the genre/thousands of records collected/producing etc. I’m really happy you chose this pad; which is actually quite difficult to replicate, over the style of pad that was featured heavily in Jungle. I’m talking about the one that comes in halfway through Ron’s ‘Dangerous’ & the intro on Leviticus’ ‘The Burial.’ SD & Photek had a slightly more somber tone to the musical elements in their tracks, that even Bukem didn’t use in his music. That’s why til this day; people still quote SD’s ‘Snake Style’ as the darkest tune Bukem would ever play. I haven’t produced for over a decade, but I understand everything you’re doing, despite the changes in technology! I’m not sure your age/when you began producing, but man; chopping up a break back then was incredibly tedious & you could not split in samplers in the way you can today. Serum wasn’t invented then, & re-sampling basses 30-40 times wasn’t unusual to make something totally unique. I’m really grateful for all of the information you’re sharing & I can’t wait til I can hopefully have the money to pay for a new, amateur studio; but just for fun this time! Thank you, & please; I’d selfishly love to hear you recreate more of the 90’s artists. The Photek/SD/Dillinja ones have been brilliant! I’d please ask if you could try & recreate something early off of Quarantine, Silent Witness & Fierce’s ‘Knife Point’ is easily my favourite roller of all time. Huge respect for your tenacity in taking the time to not just show techniques, but edit the videos to a high standard too. 👏🏻

    • @groovining
      @groovining  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yea man that's a tune! I started producing about 10 years ago but even then it was easy to chop breaks. Since then, i've gone back and got an Akai s1000 and EMU e5000 ultra so I now know how tedious it is! God the S1000 is slow.
      I've just done a track/series on Lemon D and Dillinja where I did a lot of that resampling out of my EMU with gain, Aural excited etc distrtion sine waves. Lots of fun! Cheers for the comment mate - appreciate all the kind words. I will definitly do more artits breakdowns in the future as people really seem to love them. Silent Witness would be dope. well done!, old school idea is to re-sample everything to 1 stereo file, load it into the sampler and play altogether one octave lower and one octave higher, wher pitch will be correct, but the tempo of octave higher/lower will be different and it will add some sound magic to your pads; more movement and interesting harmonically
    EDIT:), I made a comment at 21:00 minute watching, now I can see you actually resampling everything:) hehehe

      @groovining  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I actually love this technique and have been using it loads recently! playing the chords/pads +12 and the root gives you some amazing results with more ping-pong loops. You can also go Root and +/-7 or +/-5 and get some cool things and even even layer the chords 0, +7, +12 for some crazy magic stuff 🪄😊

    Regarding the hardware snyths! A lot of doods would "rent" one for the weekend, or go over to a well off studio. Sample as much as they could.
    Its also a big reason why oldschool jungle sounds the way it does! They use the typical tricks of sampling in hot, sampling in shorter, higher sounds then transposing them back down inside the sampler

    • @groovining
      @groovining  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You've always got great insight man. I need to run my project past you before I release them! I guess that's what was so groundbreaking about the hardware samplers. • @groovining
      @groovining  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate. If you actually check some of the other parts of this Source Direct series on drum processing there are lots of tips in there.
      Getting your drums to hit right is all about making them fat in the sound design & production stages with EQ, Comp, Saturation, Transient Shaping Etc. Then also balancing them correctly against the other elements in your mix. I try and split these two things up in my workflow as one it about making the breaks sound a good as possible and the other is about making them work in the context of the track as a whole.

      Another great way to do a shimmer is to have an arp layer from a synth or piano. Then use a delay plugin with a reverb after, high pass filter. Play with the delay time and reverb wet/dry :)
