    Yesss!!! Thank you for doing this reaction! I am in love with all of the octopath music, but this one has a special place in my heart. Mostly because I'm a big violin player. I've been learning this one in a while specifically and it's quite the challenge. No matter how many times I hear it, I never get sick of it. The whole game just has such a beautiful atmosphere, it's easy to be drawn in. As a game and music nerd, this piece is heaven. ✨
    So the boost/break versions are not in the game. They are a separate album that the players performed live during a concert. Half of them are hard rock (boost) and the other half are more orchestrated and melodic (break). Hope to hear more on this channel :)

    You've opened the floodgates now. This entire soundtrack is a total banger. I mean it, the WHOLE thing. Every character theme, every town theme, and especially the battle themes.

    This game is infamous for its insane music and music transitions that connect everything together no matter which character your using. And yes each character has their own theme and unique intro transitions to the multiple boss songs.

  • @spiderdude2099
    @spiderdude2099 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    For context:
    This song plays at one of the 4 optional shrines in this game to the gods who guard the most powerful job classes in the game. For all 8 of the normal jobs, you get to the end and just obtain them as a reward for getting through the prior dungeon. But for these 4 shrines, it seems like that’s how it’s going to go. The voice of the god starts to give you the same “you have done well to make it this far, I bestow upon you the ____ class”speech the rest of them give, but suddenly at the end the voice goes:
    “I will bestow upon you the power of the ____ class…………but first……a test.”
    “Steel yourself and prove you are worthy to wield my power.”
    And then one of the hardest boss fights in the game commences with this music. The god descends from the heavens, and you have to go all out and fight the god themselves before you can claim the class for yourself. All 4 of these optional bosses are incredibly difficult and not recommended until you’re at least level 50

    • @draghettis6524
      @draghettis6524 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well, there are cheese strats for three out of for of them.
      For two, you only need to survive until you can setup the Sealticge's Seduction + Reflective Veil, and usually it's something you can keep reapplying every turn.
      For the other one, if you have beaten the only non-cheese one, you can Transfer Rune + Sidestep ( with Rest to restore SP and healing )

  • @darkiway

    This game's ost is incredible, but so is the rest of the sound production on it.
    Of particular note, you should know that boss themes are usually preluded by the theme of whichever main character's story you're currently progressing. The really cool thing is that they're made to mesh seamlessly into the boss tracks, giving the opening notes of the boss fight a special flair unique to each protagonist.

    • @Emilio1985
      @Emilio1985 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      What's cool is this is true even for They Who Govern Reason even though it's a song that's never preluded by a character theme. But you could seamlessly mesh any character's pre-battle theme to this song and it works just the same.

    Specifically it is the music of the 4 optional bosses who give you the 4 hidden classes. As for the name, the game is about 8 different characters who all have different paths who meet up and work together. Also the name of the characters actually spell Octopath.
    Ophelia
    Cyrus
    Tressa
    Olberic

    • @Ghostel3591
      @Ghostel3591 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well... Work together in gameplay. In story even if Ophelia just got stabbed in her story arc - even if Alfyn, resident apothecary, is currently on the team - there is zero change - same as the rest of the team he'll sit on the side like it is some kind of theater play and do nothing while Ophelia bleeds out in her story cutscene.
      Seriously music and gameplay are amazing but there is zero influence from other characters on 8 story paths each take despite them claiming to take inspiration from FF6 - where cutscenes DID adapt depending on who is present at the time - Octopath does nothing of the sort and what is supposed to be Endgame where 8 Stories converge... Is delegated to non-voiced bonus boss Rush dungeon with post-game brutal level of difficulty usually more common among actual bonus bosses like Ultima or Emerald, Ruby, etc weapons.

    Yay! I love Octopath's soundtrack, it's just very imaginative and epic. Trust me there's a bunch of other great tracks, for battles, characters and locations.
    One thing that you'll sadly miss from watching these on TH-cam is the game's perfect use of transitions. So there will be a track during a dialogue sequence before a boss battle, then as the battle scene kicks in there's a transition sequence that almost seamlessly changes it to the boss battle music, regardless of where in the track it was. It's masterfully done.

    Great reaction to an awesome track! This game released on the Switch in 2018 and was meant to be an homage to the golden era of JRPGs. From the visuals, gameplay, to the music, the game is a mix of nostalgia and modernity
    It has a stylized pixel art style with 3D environments, modern VFX, sweet animations. Square Enix created the term "HD2D" just for it and it's gorgeous. For the music, they were greatly influenced by the SNES JRPGs soundtracks. The melodies are singable. I remember them saying that they didn't want the orchestra to take the lead and bury the melodies. So Nishiki composed the soundtrack just like if it was a SNES game but with this orchestral sound to it. The OST never disappoints and I really recommand this game to any JRPG fan

    “Octopath” , as the name suggests, is indeed a story of 8 characters traveling their own paths.
    ...which is also a downside to some, as they don’t have a real connection outside of “traveler banter” and a series of side quests in the end game to connect them..
    The stories are as following
    Ophilia the Cleric: She’s on a Pilgrimage to fulfill a sacred tradition, with many twists and turns.
    Cyrus the Scholar: He’s on the search for a lost ancient tome, and during his travels he find out some scary secrets, for what he does with it, you’ll need to stay guessing.
    Tressa the Merchant: a young merchant wanting to explore the world and create waves where ever she goes, with a strange journal as her guide and motivation. (Probably) the most heartwarming story to follow.
    Olberic the Warrior: A knight suffering from the fallen kingdom on Hornberg, suffering of past events, who now resides in a peaceful village. Then bandits attack said village and stir some of his old memories, leading him to travel and find a new purpose in life.
    Primrose the Dancer: A story of revenge. As she gains information about her father’s killer, fate bestowed this dancer with an opportunity to seek it out. With a lead she dances to her whimsical desire for revenge. Will she complete it? Only time knows.
    Alfyn the Apothecary: In this world, medicine is still in it’s infancy, so the masses rely on Apothecaries to keep them safe. Some abuse this notion to get rich fast, while other do it out of kindness. Alfyn is the latter, and travels the world seeking to help others, as to repay a man who helped him out of kindness. What does his travels learn this kindhearted man? Something important, that’s what.
    Therion the Thief: (my favorite)A thief who strikes fear in the wealthiest of men, a thief that never gets caught, finds himself in a town somewhere in the red buffs, where a rumour of a mansion holding sacred jewels worthy of buying the continent, this naturally lures him in, while sneaking in said mansion he notices how... this mansion has very good traps for thieves, and when he reached the treasure, he realized it to late, and was apprehended by the butler of this mansion, leading to a scuffle, where Therion lost and was forced to do as the Butler had asked, to retrieve the other gems that were stolen. During this quest, he’s reminded of his past, and later learns something vital that was once taken from him. What that is? You’ll need find out.
    H’aanit the Hunter: A descendant of a clan that can tame animals and monsters, her master was tasked with hunting a dangerous beast known as “Red Eye”, as rumors of this beast being able to petrify anything it comes across, people would hire this man for it. Many months later, the student hasn’t received word of her master, and fears for the worst, traveling and honing her skills, she ventures to find her master. What is this beast? Where is her master? You’ll have to help her to find out!
    That is basically everyone’s story in my simplified version, as for where this boss track is played, its on optional bosses that unlocks secret classes.
    The Break and Boost arrangement, is something that isnt in the game.
    And there’s a prequel to Octopath Traveler.
    “Octopath Traveler:Champions of the Continent” A free single-player mobile game, with a new story(one story instead of 8) new music tracks (and old ones) and a fun game, its worth your time if you liked Octopath Traveler, or enjoy JRPGs.
    There are many tracks in this game that i want you to hear, but there’s so many of them to choose from... Battle at Journey’s End is the one i’ll request(from Octopath Traveler) , if it ever gets read of course..

    16:30 The Break & Boost remixes are not in the game, unfortunately. They were exclusively made for the CD.
    I recommend Decisive Battle II. I think it's considered the best game song overall, and it has 2 remixes in the B&B CD, one for each style (break - calm arrangements, boost - more metal arrangements). So you can do a 3-in-1 video, with the original game version and the 2 B&B versions.
    I would also like to hear your thought on Battle II (not the decisive one - "Decisive Battle" is the boss' songs, and "Battle" are for normal battles). The violin in that song speaks to my soul.
    Also, I was lucky enough to see the Break&Boost live concert here in Japan. I was awesome.

    Speaking on the actual game, it's a really interesting experience. You pick one of eight playable characters and you follow their journey. You can pick up the others as party members to complete the full story. It has this "HD2D" art style, so it's all sprite based but has really cool dynamic lighting and effects. It's up there in "games I wish I could MIB mind wipe just so I could experience for the first time again" with FF7, FF10, and Chrono Trigger. Heavily recommended!!

    This game scratches the classic JRPG itch in a way that feels both retro and modern. The story (or really, stories plural) are not much to write home about but the overall aesthetic of the game makes it very enjoyable to play

      I like the anthology approach to storytelling in the game. The central focus of each story is the character, rather than some grand overarching narrative of evil empire or eldritch abomination or plucky rebellion or whatever. Contrast other jRPGs and you find that Ophilia's story has meaning because Ophilia's family matters, Alfyn's story has meaning because his desire to help people and his struggle with the unintended consequences of his attitude matter, etc. I think this is a nice change of pace from characters whose arcs are that they matter because they contribute something unique to ending the world-threatening evil.
      There aren't many games that do that, and Squaresoft/Square-Enix seems to have perfected the anthology-jRPG sub-genre: Octopath, Saga Frontier, Liv-a-Liv, and even Legend of Mana (in that the whole game is a collection of unconnected stories, even though there's a single MC). I wish more studios would try that approach to storytelling out.

    Beyond just listening to this game's OST it is one I would say you would enjoy actually playing and experiencing the moments in game where these OST play. Even just wandering listening to the overworked themes is a way to just relax when I don't want much action

    I'm kind of surprised tbh that Octopath hasn't been requested till now. That game's ost is way up there in my rankings honestly, I was blown away when I first played it. Those Who Govern Reason plays during the four secret boss fights in the game; there are four shrines hidden around the world with these tough bosses to fight that give you extra classes to use.
    To spitball several (because there are so many) of my faves: Octopath Main Theme, Primrose's theme, The Sunlands, Battle 1, Decisive Battle 2, Battle at Journey's End, My Quiet Forest Home, Victor's Hollow, Stillsnow, Beneath the Surface...probably more honestly, the whole ost is pretty amazing

    If you like violin I hope someone will ask for Termination, from Ys Origin. The violin/guitar duo is amazing.
    But about Octopath there are tons of AMAZING musics from it. The crazy part is how all the different boss battle themes have actually the same speed (even if it doesn't really feel like it). That way each of the eight character's pre-battle theme fits to the boss theme entering right after that.
    It's a genius move from the composer. It makes us so hyped whean reading the pre-battle dialogues and then the boss music enters right when you end the dialogue in a very clean transition.

    One of the best music from this game. My personnal favourite is decisive battle I ( with Tressa intro ). On another note, I know a lot of people love the true final boss theme (i think it's that at least), but personnally, i don't. Maybe an analysis would make me change my opinion, who knows

    I don't know if someone already suggested these ones but here I go:
    Battle With Seymour (Final Fantasy X)
    Fury Bowser Theme (Bowser's Fury)
    Star Wolf Theme (Star Fox Assault)
    Trial Of Maligog (DOOM Eternal TAG 1)
    Main Theme (DOOM 3)

    If you'd like more intense violins you might enjoy "Oscurita Di Xehanorth" from Kingdom Hearts 3.
    It mixes together final boss themes from 3 previous games in a fight against all of them. It's absolutely amazing.

    If you're looking for more crazy Square-Enix violins, the way they're used in this song kind of reminds me of Dark Impetus from Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep.

    Octopath's story is kind of a mixed bag. About half of the characters have a very strong few earlier chapters, but by the end pretty much all of their stories just miss the mark. The soundtrack is easily the best part of the game though.
