One of the fastest bowlers of all time is born. Shoaib Akhtar was twice clocked going past the 100mph barrier - though the figures remain unofficial - but he generated as much interest for his bowling action and his attitude to the game

Probably the calmest batsman facing Akhtar. Not scared, not panicked, at complete comfort. Legendary.

You can see the severity of his knee pain between deliveries. Still runs in full tilt. Respect

Aus had a pretty ordinary record from the previous WC in 96 till this one. Especially outside home.
Yet they managed to win it.
SAF was by far the best ODI side between 96 & 99.

In 1996 their man batsman was Mark Waugh...This is the time when Gilchrist came in..He along with rise of McGrath and ponting were instrumental in them winning World cup 99..and of course mark Waugh and Steve Waugh who both played cruicial knocks in super 6 and semifinal

Yes Gilchrist made a huge difference.
      Covered two spots for them.
      M Taylor and Healy..
      Two very average ODI players.

There's always a big excitement when an express fast bowler comes onto the scene. I remember the spell at the WACA v Australia and Ricky Ponting brew the brunt of Akhtar's pace.

Lolz! He was injured mainly during the 2000-2002 period. Made a comeback from injury in April 2002 in Sharjah and played a crucial role in the demolition of Srilanka in the finals specially that wicket of Sangakkara. 2002 was his peak and quickest after returning from injury with some real breathtaking memorable spells against New Zealand and Australia both in ODIs and Tests. He delivered his best ODI and Test spell in the following ODI and Test series against New Zealand in Pakistan where he picked 6 for in the first ODI bowling mainly almost the whole spell in excess of 150 and then in the Test series that followed against the same opposition bowled his career best spell of 6-12 again bowling complete spell mainly in excess of 150+ at Lahore. That spell is still amongst one of the all time best Test spells by a fast bowler in the history of Test cricket. This was the same match where Inzi scored his test best score of 300+. Then in the Challenger 3 match ODI series against Aussies in their own backyard played 2 ODIs and won Pakistan the ODI series by bowling match winning spell of 5 for in the decider 3rd match at Gabba. Then in the Test Series against Australia bowled a breathtaking spell of 6 for in the 2nd innings at Colombo bowling strong Aussie team all out for a paltry 120 odd on a flat track giving Pakistani inexperienced batting lineup a glimpse of hope to win the match which unfortunately Pakistan eventually lost by a margin of 40 odd runs.
