Acer E5 Charge Light But No Power - LFC

  • This Acer was running just fine, and then suddenly wouldn't turn on - apparently without cause. Charger is fine, battery charges. How do we approach this?
    Spoilers down below:
Bad keyboard, power button had failed. In the video I show how we can test for this without having a spare keyboard on hand.

Not to many repair shops go the extra mile to physically clean the device before they give it back to client. Love your repair videos I learn a lot. Thank you sir.

Thank you for cleaning it at the end - I HATE the guys in my shop who return the stuff they work on in an absolutely disgusting state. Even if it came in filthy and nasty, I make sure to clean it just to show the owner what a difference there is and to show I offer professional services.

For these keyboard replacements I found tiny screws on Amazon that will screw and anchor in to the underside of the palmrest. You can apply these screws where you can't remelt those posts.

Excellent tutorial! About the keyboard replacement, i as well did'nt enjoyed the need to replace just the keyboard, which is trapped like that, but it is actually really simple to get it done. I'll use a candle and a pointy tiny piece of metal, where i will be heating the object costantly to melt this plastic dots, you can use acrilyc glue to reconect this regions.

Can't believe you use Mr Sheen as well lol Its the best cleaner I have found , does not leave any residue and never had any problems with laptop screens. The glass cleaners can be dodgy even the ones without ammonia and I would definitely make sure the laptop is off and spray whatever cleaner onto a rag instead of straight onto the screen just incase some product runs down the edge of the screen and into the screen layers or ffc connectors. I have had some laptops and televisions with damage due to this. Thanks for the video mate.

If the keyboard weren't rivoted in place like that, I would even try to go as far as tearing the layers apart on the keyboard and redraw the power button trace if all other traces are good.
Or, perhaps you can try a frankenstein method of soldering a physical power button off the side of the laptop or something so the user can switch it on there.

long shot here but the original keyboard may have only had a little fleck of dust preventing the the key from operating correctly, I've had a few of these with that prob and as you say the keyboards are a Bi...PAIN to remove (gammy soldering iron and hot glue I find works) then podge the corner of the keyboard open, blow and viola...rebuild time.... on one of them I have also fitted an alternative power button to one of these by soldering flyleads with a small button to the 2 pins you identified and mounted it next to the USB on the rhs. But like you say, it's a time thing and that was a 1 hour job.. wish I had pics of it for you.

I thought that my keyboard stopped working but it's even more bizarre.
So my laptop is Asus Rog GL502VS, I have the power LED on when I plug in the charger but it won't switch on. I've started messing around disconnecting everything bit by bit and I made my laptop to work, but here it's getting weird:
I've unplugged ac, BIOS battery, laptop battery and speakers. Plug in ac and boom it switches on, after that I have to quickly plug in BIOS battery and it boots normally.
It will work normalny, it can go to sleep but if I'll shut it down, I'll have go through that process again...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks. K

  • @QuentinStephens

Thank you for an educational video. Two surprises: that you don't charge for replacement parts separately and that you didn't check the batteries for possible replacement. Or did you just put in a new CR2032?

    • @Adamant_IT
      @Adamant_IT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

RTC batt (CR2032) typically lasts the life time of the computer. They do fail now and then, but I don't bother checking them unless I have a reason to think there's a problem with it. Vast vast majority of computers will boot or at least power on with no RTC batt.

It all depends on what you calculate your hourly rate to be. 10 pounds for 10 minutes work is 60 pounds an hour earned. 50 pounds earned for an hour of work is 10 pounds per hour less earned that the 10 minute job.

    • @Adamant_IT
      @Adamant_IT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yea exactly this. It's a muddy topic because when you're a one-man-band and you have to run the shop at the same time it becomes more a matter of "number of computers fixed today" rather than "profit per hour." But yea, there's a lot of mileage in taking the easy option in order to get the job done and move onto higher-margin jobs.

    Hello Adamant IT!
My HP Pavilion Dv6 laptop has almost the same issue but does have a removable battery and a separate power button.
When the charger is plugged in with no battery installed there is a white light and normally the laptop should turn on with no issues under AC power only. But just today when I tried to turn it on, it would turn on for a brief millisecond and then IMMEDIATELY cut out, no power at all as if something is shorting.
With the battery inserted and no charger plugged in, the power LED flashes white 3 times when trying to turn on.
With the battery inserted after the charger is already in, the laptop turns on successfully but the battery does NOT charge and will eventually switch off!
Bear in mind the laptop and components are nearly 10 years old.
If you know what the issue could be please help if you can :)

Hi I have predator triton 300 laptop and I think the motherboard was grounded, do you think it has still a chance to fix this? and what are the common parts that would easily damage if shorted motherboard?

I was ashamed at saying I'd write off the laptop but as the video went on I didn't feel so bad. Those Acer E series are a major PITA to repair, but I keep buying them 😂
Edit: major props for properly cleaning the laptop before returning it!

I have a E5 575 and I think the only real difference Is that I have a numpad. I have the exact same issue, but I was able to diagnose it pretty much by pressing the power button and when the backlight on the keyboard didn't turn on I knew.

I agree! that is exactly how I run my business. "You take a loss and gain on other jobs", otherwise work piles up leaving you in a pickle.

I tried looking up schematics for the ASRock pro3m AM3+ mobo to try and find out what the mosfets are on vcore, of course there is no markings so I can just use a part number and be on my merry way ....there was 2 blown capacitors on vcore and I was able to find them (cuz they had markings....lol)
just worried if I replace only the capacitors the same thing will happen, that mobo has already killed a 8370 & 8350fx chip....🥺🥺
