    Episode Notes:
    1. All games captured from real hardware.
    2. I supported the PlayStation all the way up until the PS2 launched.
    3. NFL GameDay remained the platforms most popular NFL title until around 2001 when Madden began to pass it in sales and quality.
    4. Symphony of the Night and Resident Evil saw ports to the Saturn, but I played them far more on the PlayStation.
    5. I don't feel the Saturn would have had any real trouble doing any of these games had a strong developer been attached to them, but as something like Symphony of the Night indicated, that would not have always been the case.
    6. The PlayStation was on the market and supported with new releases for more than a decade. It's longevity was unreal considering this was Sony's first console attempt.

This console generation has the best memories for me. The tech and specs are weak by now but the experience and memories of that generation were irreplaceable. The first time being awed by the graphics. The first time some people recieved it as a gift or buy it from their first salary. The games you enjoyed were made by developers who were young at that time. Fighting with your siblings over games until the house roof went down.Playing with friends or convincing your parents who arent gamers to play with you before they passed away etc. All these feelings and memories that were missing in the latter generations.

I couldn't have put this better myself. You know, every time I listen to any music from my favourite games - VF1 and VF2, Tekken 1 and 2, Toshinden 1 and 2, Cyber Speedway on Saturn, the list goes on - it just takes me back to the old living room where my mum and auntie were sat behind me, just watching and sometimes commenting on how incredible these games looked back then. I was in my late twenties at the time - 56 now - but if mum and auntie were here now, they'd struggle to tell what was a game and what was real. But still, Saturn and Playstation to this day, have such significant meaning in my life and I still play those games I loved so much then and still love now. Does anyone get the same atmospheric vibes when that music from Tomb Raider starts playing from the first game, the minute you spot the body of water in the second level - the part with the swinging blades? Priceless!

I tried to shun the PlayStation because I was such a diehard Saturn fan. I bought SotN for my brother’s PS1, but it wasn’t until Metal Gear Solid came out that I finally broke down and bought my own. MGS & Parasite Eve were the games I picked up alongside it, and I could no longer deny what a phenomenal console it was.

      I was a die hard myself .!
Played the psx because all my friends was into it.
But I kept away…I didn’t join the next generation yet in 1997 I was still playing my sega genesis & snes .
The guys would bring over the psx , saturn ,64x jaguar n. I was hanging in the sidelines.
But then the psx started swinging major blows.
      Street fighter alpha2
Need for speed hot pursuit 2
      Tekken 2 then 🤯 tekken 3
      Final fantasy 7 🤯
      Resident evil & 🤯resident evil 2
Metal gear solid & final fantasy 8
      Driver , tomb raider 2,
      🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
      Just did it .
The memory card Sony the controller was on a roll.
It’s a shame they didn’t just make a 64 bit system. Because X-men vs street fighter was a BIG DISAPPOINTMENT.!!
When the Dreamcast launched I got rid of that psx to get the dc day one .!!!
But I still remember the greatest that was the psx.

The early days were interesting but Sony just dominated the latter half of that generation, it wasn't even close. In 95-97 you could be forgiven for thinking the playstation was just another console, but it really became special after that, in it's latter years.

I quite possibly could have fallen into the same pattern. However 97 or 98 my family got a modern PC and most of my tastes could be catered to via the N64 and the PC so PlayStation stayed on the bylines for me. (I gave my Saturn at the time to my brother, so I still had access)
Rather than spend money on a console I spent money on a 3D accelerator and that did it for me. The Voodoo, who do, what you don't dare do, people

I played Silent Hill about a year or two ago for the first time and its still haunting. I can think of few games where the technological limitations made the experience better in such a way that if it was made today it seemingly wouldn't be the same.
The way the fog is used around you and encloses all your surroundings, the sound design itself has not aged one bit. Simply incredible for the time.

I highly agree. I've played my fair share of survival horror games, but Silent Hill was the only one to give me a foreboding sense of dread and anxiety, and put me on constant edge like that game does. Plus, the low polygon count on the enemies made them seem more creepy and otherworldly because you didn't know what you are looking at. I'll never forget how scared I was with my journey to the elementary school for the first time. Silent Hill is truley an amazing game.

@@SegaLordX I had a PlayStation console and I have played almost all Silent Hill games up until this console generation. The first time I experienced Silent Hill was on a special demo disc basically revolving around horror games and similar games like that. And man, I can't begin to tell you how spooky and utterly the gameplay was. Right now, as I am typing this reply to you, I can tell you Konami really tried extremely hard to make me scared during the entire playthrough of that demo and they succeeded and then some! I eventually found the game a few years later and the most challenging part of the game?: the puzzles.🧩 I also enjoyed the various the amounts of time that you ran into the fog and found monsters and all sorts of different items scattered throughout the game as well. I am so grateful for the effort Konami put in and making all the locations and the monsters you would find and encounter them in. All the bosses were extremely tough too, though I found that you could change the game's difficulty from easy through to hard: I mostly played the game on the easy setting the first time I played through the whole game. I have yet to beat the game in hard mode so if you could tell what your experience was with the game in hard mode, I would greatly appreciate that opinion on how to tackle the game. AWESOME VIDEO SLX, this is an awesome top 10 PlayStation games list! I always watch your videos whenever they are uploaded and I have been playing video games since I was a little boy so I really enjoyed this video!! I've played all sorts of different consoles for over 26 years and I will continue to do so, because as it happens, I also enjoy all the retro content and I especially love playing vintage rare videogames from the 70's 80's and the 90's! Again awesome video dude, thankyou so much for these wonderful PlayStation games memories!!😊😊😎 Can't wait to see what your video is! :)

The PS1 picked up right from where the SNES/SFC left off, this is the true SNES successor and all sequels went to the PS1 while the N64 went its separate ways. Yeah, that era is not only great for RPGs, but the best arcade, new genres and experimentations that went beyond what the industry is willing to take on from the PS3 era onwards. The PS2 continued the PS1 trend, sometimes it's hard to tell the PS1/PS2 apart from one another, they feel like extensions of each other, if we take into account that the PS2 can play all the PS1 library and consider that the PS3 (specially the fat original) is backwards compatible with these two previous consoles and you can play them in modern TVs in HDMI with a wireless controller, then this is probably the peak.

Enjoyed the video! I always enjoy personal top 10 lists like this, and I see quite a few in the comments as well, which are fun to read. Though Saturn & Dreamcast have always been my favorite consoles, the fact that each of them was short-lived means that the long-lived PS1 has (in my opinion) the best game library of any single console. So much to play, and I still go back to PS1 just as often as I do to Saturn/Dreamcast today. My Top 11 PS1 list only shares two games with SLX... couldn't figure out which game to drop to get down to 10. Alphabetically:
    - Ape Escape
    - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
    - FF7
    - FF9
    - Klonoa
    - R4: Ridge Racer Type-4
    - Spyro 1
    - Suikoden II
    - Tomb Raider
    - Wipeout XL
    - Xenogears
My other two favorite genres, shmups and fighters, don't have any PS1 games that measure up to my Top 11 list. My fave PS1 shmups are Raystorm & Einhander; favorite PS1 fighters are Soul Edge/Blade and Tekken 2|3 -- they're all Top 20 or 30 on PS1.

I played and beat silent hill the summer it came out when I was 14 years old!
To this very day, it is one of my most nostalgic memories in gaming just for the sheer fact of being absolutely blown away for the capabilities of that game at the time as well as the shocking tone and atmospheric artistry at work!!
But it was the absolutely eerie feeling of isolation and being alone and scared that that game gave you while playing it late at night by yourself in your room in the dark, that made it all too memorable..
No wonder a black label copy goes for over $200

If Resident Evil, and Final Fantasy had a baby, they would of created Parasite Eve. What a great blend of horror, and fantasy! I played the Hell out of it when I was a teenager, and it still looks great today.
Of the Final Fantasies, my favorit one was the one you didn't mention, and that was Final Fantasy VIII. I remember booting that up for the first time, and how the opening movie and song really grabbed me, and gave me cold chills! Still my favorite opening movie to and RPG!
As far as favorite RPG for the PS1, I have 2 that I can't decide which is my favorite, and them being Lunar SSSC, and Brigandine. Lunar had such a beautiful story, and soundtrack! Still today, it's the only game that made me tear up at the end! I've always been a fan of tactical rpgs, and nothing scratched that itch quite like Brigandine did. You had 5 countries to choose from, so it gave you lots of reasons to replay it. The stories were kind of shallow, but it made up for it with very addictive combat, and strategic gameplay. If you are into tactical rpgs, similar to Fire emblem, or Shining Force, and you mix a little Risk in there, then you will know what to expect. For it's time, there was really nothing like it!

This generation of consoles almost demand a CRT with real hardware. You can upscale 8 and 16-bit games to look fine on modern displays, but this early polygon stuff doesn't come off the same. Upscaling and modern tech almost make them look worse because they show every crappy texture, funky polygon, and the countless jaggies clearer than ever.

A side note. Alone in the Dark usually only gets mentioned nowadays as the less successful predecessor to Resident Evil. As far as survival horros go, that's probably true. However, in the 90s it also spawned an whole host of atmospheric tank control adventure games. Most of them are now forgotten, but there are some real gems there, like Knight's Chase, Time Commando, The City of Lost Children or one of my all-time favourites, Little Big Adventure.

-Sega does not release the 32X,
-Sega does not spend as much in the hardware arena because Sony is splitting the cost with them.
-Sega would have provided some input into the hardware design that Sony missed; like having more built in memory so it didn't suffer with certain ports (Marvel vs Streetfighter for example)

I loved the PS1 and still it has such a vast library of incredible games that I still enjoy! I know many of the 3D games may not have aged particularly well and feel quite clunky now, but a lot of them are still quite fun despite all that!
The only thing is SCEA did make that bone-headed decision in the early years of the PS1 to try and prevent 2D games from releasing on the console. I know they were trying to show off the 3D capabilities of the system, but I would have loved to see more 2D games on the PS1 over here in the US. @sonicmania9993 Facts. My favorite PS1 games that don't quite hit the top ten are Spyro 3, Crash 1, Team Racing and Bash, Croc 1, Pong, Um Jammer Lammy, Tomba, Tekken 3, Rayman 2*
*although I prefer the PS2 version. I just wanted to give a shout out to Rayman.

Controversial opinion time: I do not think that PS1 games have aged as well as SNES and Genesis games have. And I think the problem is two-fold. 1) Those early polygon graphics were rough and nasty in a way that perfected sprite graphics were not and 2) The early CD technology had atrocious loading times. Anyone who grew up in this era knows that ''loading bar'' was code for ''get up and have a piss.''

Disagree, it’s mainly the dull and awkward games that look ugly, low-poly graphics done right have a lot of charm
Pixel Art is an entirely different aesthetic

I personally love the early polygon (and fake polygon) aesthetic of PS1 and other contemporary games. Looks great to me, and I always associate it with such joyful times gaming ... and to this day prefer it to late PS2 and PS3 era graphics (which for me were less joyful times gaming, with fewer games I loved).
That being said... I understand the standard argument that these graphics haven't aged well. I think you'll find most people would agree with you.
