    I am a proud owner of my Z Fold 5 512 GB, my first ever foldable. Prior I was coming from a Note 20 Ultra 512 GB with 1TB SD Card. Samsung still has me because of my Samsung Buds Pro 2 and the DEX feature which works with my UPerfect X14 Wireless Lapdock. I am happy that Oneplus and the other Chinese brands like Xiaomi and Honor are releasing wider foldables. My perfect foldable is something akin to the size of Note 20 Ultra on the front display in terms of width. The One Plus Open is almost perfect (just needs ultra fast wireless charging). I am not an SPEN user and I rarely touched my SPEN on my Note 20 Ultra. Hopefully the Z Fold 6 will be bigger and wider. The small cover display while functional, still feels tight. That or we get a Z Fold 6 standard and Z Fold 6 Pro. Something stupid like that lolol. Competition is good!
    Samsung still has the perks of having better third party accessories such as cases. I got a Caseborne case for my Z Fold 5 and its rugged and perfect. (don't care for it being thick). I swear if Apple releases their foldable in 2025 or something, then we will have foldables as a mainstream form factor. This will encourage more third parties and brands to keep pumping out releases and accessories. Lower priced foldables will be awesome.

      Do you enjoy the ZFold 5 better than the Note 20 Ultra? I'm still debating. I own my Note 20 Ultra 512 gb with 1 tb micro SD card as well. Is the 512gb on your Z Fold enough to make up from the 1 tb micro SD card sufficient? I really want to know if I should upgrade my Note 20 Ultra for the Z Fold 5?

    Swapped over from my Fold 4 over to a OnePlus Open and have really enjoyed what both phone have to offer so far. I absolutely get where the channel is coming from in that the Fold definitely made me WANT to open it more to be able to do the "fun" stuff. Personally, I enjoyed swiping to type on the fold front screen and felt the narrow screen made that really nice for me. The Open is a different beast in that I can do everything I want on the front screen and only really find myself opening it when I specifically want to watch certain movie or play a certain game on my inner display. The front screen does it so well that often I may just feel "too lazy" to unfold it and use that. Also love how awesome the Open feels in the hand, definitely the perfect form factor from that end as far as a foldable device goes. Oh and the camera is definitely much better.

    Hey guys, great video. I got the OnePlus Open last week and I love it. I traded my Z Fold 4 for it. I just wanted to let you know that there is a setting called "Screen switching" that lets you choose between swiping up on the front screen (default), continuing from inner screen to front screen (ala Samsung) or turning off the screen.

    Great conversation on foldables. I like the look of the OP Open, I thought about it briefly, but I just don't see myself as a foldable kinda guy. When I hold up my Pixel 7 Pro over my old Nexus 7 tablet (which at the time in 2013 I wished I could just use as my phone!) I just think to myself that it's already tablet-y enough for me. And yeah, the old N7 still works!!

    If I'm looking for great hardware, OnePlus is the easy winner. As for software, that's on personal needs. I still keep an eye on Samsung because of DeX, which I use a lot.

  • @kelvinching6604
    @kelvinching6604 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My top priority is versatility, and I find Samsung to excel in this aspect. Samsung Flow and DeX offer great convenience, allowing me to seamlessly access my phone while using my Samsung tablet.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dex is a killer feature, but it's funny that a good desktop mode actually makes the argument for a foldable a LITTLE harder. I can sit and have an immediate "double phone" sized screen experience, or I can use dex and have a proper computer experience with a little extra effort.
      We're looking to phones to do more and be more, and a foldable can help reduce the need to carry a tablet, but Dex and ReadyFor can reduce my need to carry a proper laptop. I think a LOT of consumers would choose to skip the "mini tablet" if they understood better what desktop modes could bring to the table.

      It's a SUPER personal decision. It REALLY matters what you think you'll want to do on a foldable. If you're wanting the better cameras, I'd lean OP, but if you want to use features like S-Pen and Dex, then Samsung is the way. In terms of hardware and screen though, I prefer the formfactor and hinge on the OP.

    I still feel that foldables are pushed forward to light up our imagination of being able to do "work on the go" and the reality for actual productivity is not fully met. I own various iterations of them and while You can certainly jot down or draw ideas, I would say that you still have to fully fledge those ideas out on a Desktop / Pc / Mac / Laptop etc. So I still feel we are "marketed" towards them as if they really do "more" when they either physically or software wise can not actually do more. Physical size limitation being the biggest productivity limitation i.e. buy a laptop. For me, they will remain a great portable snack bot for email, browsing, note taking, calculator, watch, gadget - but not for "work" or "productivity" per se. I personally wish they weren't promoted as such, they are useful and they do serve a purpose, but "productivity" is not their strength.

  • @LorneGrimmer
    @LorneGrimmer ปีที่แล้ว

    I never seen anyone talk about it, but aren't foldables in general the best for selfie takers? S23 Ultra comes up as a top selfie phone in many lists, and it does have a better front facing camera than the Z Fold 5, but doesn't the Fold win by default since it can use the rear camera as the selfie cam too?

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      No argument from me. I only take rear camera selfies, even when shooting blind. It really bugs me how few people will even try. The Open is now technically the best selfie shooter in North America.

  • @BrianGlaze
    @BrianGlaze ปีที่แล้ว

    When you said that when youre out and about, its mostly traditional Phone use....I find myself disagreeing. When I use my foldable out, I try to open it as much as possible even when I'm out and about.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, I WANT to use it that way more, but my recommendation is still that folks should minimize that, especially if they're new to foldables. The tolerance for making a mistake on a plastic screened phone with a hinge while out and about is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than on a smaller traditional slate phone.
      Look at all the folks that walk around with busted screens who still have a year left on their contract. That LITERALLY can't work with a busted plastic screen.

    Hot take but I kinda prefer the more candy-bar aesthetics to the zfold series. It makes me realize how much wasted space there are on slab phones. It can get a little cramped but I've gotten used to it. Talking about design philosophy... how do most people use tablet? I'd argue that more people are used to a long than wider paper format ala ipad mini. Sure with video I put it horizontal, but i use my fold screen moslty for reading, and the longer form factor on the fold works for me

  • @4000marcdman

    Both phones don’t work for me.
    Z fold has an ugly crease that is super visible with white backgrounds
    The Oneplus Open square display causes videos to be small (with bigger black bars).

    • @FAT8893
      @FAT8893 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree with the Samsung's crease. I did went to try out the Z Fold5 at an authorized dealer centre. While it does finally fold flat, the crease is still visible and touchable even if it's not under direct light.
      As for the OnePlus square screen, pretty much all foldable phones, Samsung included, has an almost square screen. My bigger worry is split screen since there are apps that still don't natively support it. It's one of the reason why I switched from foldable to dual display.

    In my opinion, I'm buying a foldable smartphone to get away from a normal candy bar smartphone as much as I can, because normal candy bar smartphones are deadly boring today. Buying a foldable smartphone to just end up using it like a normal candy bar phone again, because of the outer display is the same aspect ratio as them, is not what I would see as a very well spent money, especially when you just end up using the front (outer) screen 90% of the time and 10% the inner screen. And that's not what I want for spending 1600-1800 dollars on a foldable smartphone.
    The front / outer screen should be there to let us do the basic tasks and then do the more properly tasks on the inner screen. That's how I look at a foldable smartphone.
    And this is why I love the Z Fold5 and why I have it. Because it's not as good as a normal smartphone or Samsung doesn't let it be a good normal smartphone, because it's supposed to be used mostly as a foldable smartphone, because of the narrow outer screen. And when you unfold the Z Fold5 to the inner screen, the Z Fold5 doesn't get so wide then that you can't hold it with one hand or can't have your fingers around the sides of the phone. And this is a good thing. With the Pixel Fold being that wide, it's not that easy to hold it with one hand while unfolded.
    So, I call the Z Fold5 a mediocre normal smartphone experience, but the best foldable experience overall. And this is all fine.
    And the other thing is that with the Z Fold5, you can rotate the inner screen to go more widescreen. You can't do that on the 'Open' as it's almost fully square.
    But, going for a 21:9 aspect ratio (which I believe the Z Fold6 will get) on the front / outer screen is the most optimal aspect ratio for a foldable smartphone where the front display won't take away the main points of being a foldable smartphone.
    And lastly. Even though I like the 'Open Canavas' feature a tiny bit better on the 'Open' over the Z Fold5's 'Multiwindow' feature, doesn't mean the 'Open' is the best foldable smartphone feature-wise in total. Here is Samsung still far ahead of both OnePlus and Google.
    So, all in all, the Z Fold5 is still the most balanced foldable smartphone out there today.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Z Fold 5 outer display ratio is 23.1:9 which is kinda silly, especially for all the reviewers that pan phones like the XPERIA for being too tall. The hinge should be 90 degrees different, which is why I prefer the overall form factor of the Duo and the Pixel Fold better.
      Different strokes for different folks, but telling people "you shouldnt care if you can use it like a traditional phone" on a $1600+ mobile device that replaces their phone, is probably a weak argument for consumers.

    A device that is still considered as phones with an added convenience of a larger inside screen e.g. the one plus open.
    Or a foldable mini tablet with a minimalist outside screen e.g. z fold.
    I prefer the former since I retain the familiarity of a slab phone with all the added benefits of foldable phone.
    I won't buy 1 anytime soon though 😅

    Guys, Dex is on the S23 fe. I'm not a huge Samsung fan, but I got one. It's better than the a54. Battery life is actually good. At this point, we need to think more about what people can afford. $1800 is not something blue collar people can afford to spend. If it's not in the $700 to $800 range, you might as well forget about people paying that much out of their pocket. Bring this conversation back when foldables are affordable 👍🏾

      Don't expect to see horizontal foldables to be affordable. It's been five years since the first horizontal foldable phones went on sale, and it's still as expensive as ever. By a big contrast, we now see affordable vertical foldable flip phone. Remember when the original foldable Motorola RAZR 2019 cost $1,500 new? Now, the RAZR 40 (aka Razr 2023 in the USA) cost $699 new, and that's before counting in any discounts.

I was really relying upon the fact that this was their first foldable device to make excuses for it, but after one plus has knocked it out of the park on their first try... Google is without excuse! 1Plus Open is literally the Oppo Find N3 (4th foldable from Oppo). 1 Plus just took the phone and placed their name on it and Hasselblad on the cameras. The Main OS is also completely the same. So, it's not really something they had to reseach and do on their own (uunlike Google), when they can just use their sister company's work.

    • @BrianGlaze

      To be fair the OnePlus Open is the hardware of the Find N3 so it's not quite first Gen in totality.

      @@LBastone I don't like how the device doesn't completely open. I don't like the battery life. I don't like the fact that their best technology is not on the most expensive device. When it is being compared to the OnePlus open it just feels like they made a lot of mistakes that they shouldn't have. I wanted this device to have at least a couple more features that the regular pixel phone didn't have. In fairness, it may just be because all of the tech TH-camrs are hyping OnePlus that I am feeling some kinda way.

    I disagree that normal people want to use the outside screen more when they have a foldable. It's only the tech tubers and techie people who insist that they prefer to use the outside screen when they have foldables. The purpose of a folding phone is to use the internal screen. That's my 2 cents.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Then you missed what I actually said. I didn't say people WANT to use it that way, but that my recommendation was they SHOULD use it that way. The tolerance for making a mistake on a plastic screened phone with a hinge while out and about is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than on a smaller traditional slate phone.
