I'm pretty sure we can put that one down to the actors not having the first clue about swordfighting. The whole fight in general is just terrible from that perspective...
I like how in the books, even though Brienne beats Jaime here, she admits to herself that if he hadn’t been exhausted, malnourished, dehydrated and had both hands tied together, he’d have absolutely BODIED her
@@feris2137 what does it matter. powerscaling Jaime like this is kinda weird to me. This aint anime where the strongest dude is just imune to everything because hes the strongest. Still, Brienne also is just that good. As the books show at multiple occasions
Jamie: "Never understood why some knights felt the need to carry two swords." Brienne: "One's for killing monsters. The other? For killing humans." Geralt of Rivia: *Onlooks the scene with approval*
It's a shame they didn't display just how powerful Jaime really was as a swordfighter in the books. In the books, he almost killed her before his condition caught up to him.
Yeah it makes sense. Although she might be aware he is severely weakened and ill let alone chained she doesn't take the chance he's easy to beat initially.
@@runtergerutscht4401 They did the same for Jaime and Barriston, never really acknolwedged how good they were supposed to be. Also Loras too just became a joke character when he was supposed to be quite a skilled fight too. They did well with Oberyn and Arhur Dayne at least. In the book it was clear that Jaime lost this fight because of his condition, although he did still underestimate Brienne thinking he wouldn't need to be at full strength. In the show it's really just a whole girl power thing, she just wrecks him. We never see Jaime's skill, even against Ned Stark it seemed quite even and he only killed Jorl Cassel by cheating.
@@AVerySillySausage yeah. But only so much you can do when your actor didn't train swordfighting ten years in advance. When someone plays an instrument, you can at least edit the acoustics to make it sound right. No such luck with swordfights, unfortunately. The other option would've been to make all the fight scenes highly edited, but I'm glad they didn't do that.
"He was weak from imprisonment, and chained at the wrists. No knight in the Seven Kingdoms could have stood against him at his full strength, with no chains to hamper him. @@josepabloceniceros3483 Also Jamie was not interested in killing Ned either, just wanted to kill the men with him and give him a warning to free Tyrion.
The problem was that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, despite being a good actor, wasn't remotely convincing as an elite sword fighter. They probably wanted to put in more fight scenes but saw how unathletic and uncoordinated he looked.
This makes Henry Cavill so impressive. He is an actor with no sword experience either and his fights in The Witcher looks absolutely amazing like a real skilled swordsman
@@MrThonyfst Yup. I loved the actor. His early sneering, coupled with his later introspection, made him my favorite character on the show. We all have our weaknesses.
I love Jaime's reaction as he gets a feel for the sword at 0:37 like meeting an old friend again after being apart for so long. Martin is such a brilliant but cruel writer, maiming the greatest fighter of Westeros after all the pain he'd already had to endure. His skill was only thing that was truly his own and he has it stripped away from him.

In the books, Brienne is completely outmatched by Jaime even in his condition. Jaime was the best swordsman alive during the events of Asoiaf. Barristan might have stood a chance against him in his youth and Arthur Dayne was long dead.
Exactly, even chained and imprisoned for a year and malnourished he stalemates her and is close to beating her. They end up wrestling because she couldn't beat him with sword in hand, despite being stronger. She later confirms it in her thoughts that he was brilliant and that no swordsman alive could have taken him out in his prime. But in the show they just have her deride him as being worse than him.
In the books: " Brienne remembered her fight with Jaime Lannister in the woods. It had been all that she could do to keep his blade at bay. @@JacobGrim Of course its ok to have him lose under these circumstances....really no one has an issue with that....what many of us have a big problem with though is the fact that this was just terrible totally emasculated Jamie and this was literally his last hurrah before losing his hand, in the books this plays out very differently Brine and him fight for some time and she says it took all she had to keep him off of her and sorta win in the end even with Jamie in that bad condition/shape/state after 1+ but of course in the show they dont understand that you can in fact have a strong women character without tearing down/humiliating a supposed to be strong male one, but this is well the era were in and this type of bs is infesting media just across the board, so the issue was the execution I mean in this version not only was this not even remotely a challenge for her at all its even easy a total one sided humiliation/mockery to Jamie, and thats simply not how it went in the books at all...so thats deliberate I have to assume as usual there bs ideology/agenda overrode actual good writing in this instance because what other explanation is there? and again yes some liberties from the book in any series are to be expected but this was a flat out revision and terrible once again total humiliation, exact opposite of how this fight/duel was in the books....captivity

Yep and the only other real fight against Ned stark gets interrupted. But it’s cool at least we got to see Ser Barriston fuck shit up lat… oh wait, he died to a handful of no namers carrying kitchen knives..
I never understood Jaimes reasoning here. "I'm starved, dirty, weak, caked in my own shit, but being returned to the Lannisters by this beast through some misguided treason from Lady Stark. I'm being searched for by the entirety of the north and completely out in the open on a bridge. I know! I will take a sword and best the beast in combat, then make a run for it! WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?"
+WillRock07 I can imagine that his level of frustration would have been very high. At the point he might have been looking for even the slimmest of chances and up to that point Brienne had probably given him none. The bridge as a place to fight was not bad, gently curved and overall flat, not unlike tourney fields where Jaime may have had more experience than Brienne in fighting. His just dropping down for a sit obviously frustrated Brienne who wanted to keep out of sight was much as is possible; certainly not out in the open on a bridge(which in the scene following the fight was part of their mutual undoing). His refusal to move and verbal whining was meant to and succeeded in drawing her in and when she heaved him back up to his feet, he made his move. Sharp sword makes quick work of the 'leash' he was being dragged around by and now... hands bound but having a sword...Jaime's got a chance.
In the books he gets frustrated by her annoying patronizing holier-than-thou attitude and just snaps, trying to kill her. Not that I blame him for it, Brienne could drive even a patient man nuts with her stubborn stupidity.
In the book this scene showed the immense ability of Jaimes prowess! He pushed Brienne through the forest and past creeks for ages, flurrying his sword about relentlessly.
@@mreese8764 in the books literally Brienne barely could beat an immensely exhausted, starved, weakened, sick and in chained Jaime… She says that no person on earth could even come close to Jaime on the full of his might… Thats why Brienne is arguably top 15/20 amongst the best fighters in Westeros… While Jaime is top 3.
@@mauro6545 that... sounds dumb. It's not like exhaustion, weight and malnutrition treats people differently. Young, old, trained, not trained doesn't really matter, if you have been dirty, ill treated, malnourished and exhausted for *a year*, there is no way you kept the body physique necessary to fight even remotely effective. In fact, i dare say that it makes more sense in the show as Brienne is clearly otumatched but overwhelm him with sheer brute strenght over an adversary who lose stamina very quickly due to his disadvantages.
@@giacomoromano8842 Well... thats why Jaime lost lol, literally not being able to "fight even remotely effective" Its the only reason while Jaime lost, and in the books Brienne being able to barely beat a weakened, in chained, malnutrished Jaime its the way of prooving by GRRM how great of a fighter he is... Also in the books, unlike in the show where they boosted up Brienne as a fighter, she gets her leg slashed by Jaime and I believe quite a few bruises and the fight wasnt done when they get captured so Jaime couldve still made more damage (besides in the books, Brienne isnt holding back like in here, whereas here she looks like barely giving idk 50% of her? In the books she goes full 100% against Jaime). Jaime indeed wasnt able to even remotely fight, cuz If he wouldve been able to do so, the "fight" wouldve ended in like 10 seconds.
I always remembered how Jamie was feeling out the sword before engaging. He was a master swordsman who hadn’t held a sword in a long time + was a prisoner; you could see the relief and satisfaction of holding a proper weapon again. I dont think it was bcos he could finally escape or kill Brienne, it was bcos he was just so content at wielding a sword again. Sad to think his hand would later…
I have to admit they really did Jamie wrong in this fight. The man is suppose to be hands down one of the best fighters in the show. Even in the books Briene wasn't able to beat him despite the insane disadvantage he had. For them to make him so underwhelming in this fight was really annoying to watch. And I was seriously looking forward to this to.
+Hannibal Rasberry As already noted, he had his hands tied, no armour, not practised for a year and also been locked up in a cage, tied to a post and lived in his own shit and piss for a year. Probably not been fed too well either.....
+Hannibal Rasberry Maybe this is a more grounded interpretation of what happens in the books. I mean he was malnourished and spent the last year on the road in his own filth. Realistically this is exactly how it would have gone down, length wise as well perhaps. Also going by the source material. _One of her slashes raked across his brow, and blood ran down into his right eye. The Others take her, and Riverrun as well! His skills had gone to rust and rot in that bloody dungeon, and the chains were no great help either. His eye closed, his shoulders were going numb from the jarring they'd taken, and his wrists ached from the weight of chains, manacles, and sword. His longsword grew heavier with every blow, and Jaime knew he was not swinging it as quickly as he'd done earlier, nor raising it as high._ _She is stronger than I am. The realization chilled him._ The end result felt very much the same as the show depicted.
All her opponents were at a disadvantage; Hound was wounded and had a fever, jaime was in captivity for a WHOLE year and in chains, and loras isn't anything special when he's not jousting, which is mostly a showoff.
+Ogahzlol All is fair in love and war, the characters never made excuses for their defeats, I don't quite understand why so many fans debate Brienne's victories, when it's a fight, it's only your problem if you're not in good nick when the fighting starts, it's just the way it is... and the story really does a good job of reflecting that.
I'm not denying it, what I mean to say is, regardless, she won, it's like Fencers whom whine about losing to a leftie, the fact is... they lost, or indeed getting a bad hand in cards.
Aye, though she is a great warrior, she's not as great as Jaime at his best, the same could probably be said if she got the chance to fight Eddard Stark, however, in The Hounds Case, I'd say they were evenly matched, that bite from Rorge niggled him a bit but it didn't have an effect in the fight and Sure, she smashed him about with a rock when he had no rock or sword at the end of the fight, but... what is chivalry compared to life, The Hound would have done the same thing.
As someone who was an athlete and then spent 10 months in a hospital bed this is 100% realistic. Your cardiovascular and muscles deplete remarkably fast when you don’t use them constantly. I was shocked how fast I lost muscle and got out of breath walking up one flight of stairs. I went from 198 to 127 in 10 months. I also wasn’t eating food though.
In the book Brienne admires how a malnourished and chained Jaime Lannister can fight that well. And she's thankful he's not unchained. She had brute force him when she realized she's not Besting him in swords play. She later urges him to keep living when he gives up on life after he lost his sword's hand.
And then he promptly fucks off and contracts younger onset dementia immediately, forgetting literally everything that ever happened in the past eight seasons.

@Schwanzus Longus see how quick the writers made her lose to Arya? Apparently only a woman can defeat her, women have this unreal sort of power in GoT. They must've been confused as to whether they should make one woman be unrealistically powerful, or the other. So they decided that Arya would beat her easily, even though that doesn't make sense because they have different fighting styles that they both seem to have learnt well, one style cannot simply be better than the other, they both have their own sorts of experience
@Schwanzus Longus Ehhhh I don't think it's "muh feminism" I think Jaimie losing this fight is fairly realistic. Hes in no condition to fight. Though I think it should have showcased his skill a little more.

+Diego Pachón Arthur Dayne was pretty much his mentor. In the book he doesn't use 2 swords. He said "some knights" though. Arthur Dayne was not some knight. Using 2 swords that heavy is insane, Arthur Dayne has to be pretty much the only person who could wield 2 heavy swords like this in the entire verse. The Hound and the Mountain would be strong enough to lift two swords but to effectively attack and defend with both swords you also need a lot of fluidity otherwise the extra sword is useless.
+theo konstantellos ..What? Both long-swords and arming swords(which most European knights did carry at once, historically) were built for one-handed use(as well as two-handed, in the case of the flexible longsword). So long as you have adequate strength in each arm, there's no reason why you wouldn't be able to hold a sword in each. And weight does not matter so much as balance. If the weight of the sword is balanced properly, it can be quite heavy before it starts to actually become impractical. In fact, swords tend to be weighty on purpose, as it literally adds weight to the swing. To use a bit of RPG terminology, when it comes to one-handed swords and longswords, dexterity is far more important than strength. So long as the swords are well-made, which you'd expect the best swordsman in Westeros to have, *any* knight could lift two swords effectively enough to learn Florentine techniques. Whether or not dual-wielding swords is a good idea over say, two-handing a longsword, or dual-wielding a sword and a buckler or a parrying dagger, is another matter.
An average longsword weights about 1.1-1.8 kg. Thats not heavy, anyone can lift two swords .... ( its not common because its not practical, its much better to hold a shield or a buckler in your other hand. A sword and a dagger is a good combination though )
For me, this is the only scene that actually makes it properly feel like Jaime is the best swordsman in Westeros. As other people noted, we dont get to see him ever fight a “real” fight at his peak, but the way Jaime acts with the sword while seriously disadvantaged, and the way Brienne reacts to him getting the sword and being 100% on guard makes it feel real. Like he really is the last person you would ever want to fight in a duel. The only time in the show it is ever Shown rather than just Told to us, and it was done beautifully. Superb acting done by both, and excellent choreography for the fight.
Yes, he is on his last legs in regards to malnourishment, exhaustion along with cold and soaked through, hands tied up. The amount of handicaps he has here stack the odds very much against him. He tried, because he's used to finding an advantage. But Brienne deserves her props. She is a total bruiser, able to best The Hound when he was at peak performance level and without any hindrance to his abilities. I actually quite like Jaimes implied capabilities. The way his armour, sword and reputation represent his past achievements. Sometimes not seeing someone being lethal, but knowing they are is more scary.
@@victorymansions Otherwise well said but no, the Hound was in a shitty state there, with infection, fatigue, bad nourishment etc. Or was there some other fight?
in the books, Brienne does get hit by Jamie, she was also doing her best to keep him off, I really don't like how she still looks calm and composed here, almost as if toying with him.
@@victorymansions Brienne has the additional disadvantage that Jaime mentions at 1:25 - he wants to kill her, but she doesn't want to kill him (because she's supposed to exchange him for Sansa and Arya)
Brienne's level of skill is akin to Agrias Oaks, while Jaime is at Lu Bu level. Jaime also has Lu Bu's personality, and they are both the greatest and strongest fighters in the series. A healthy Jaime can destroy both the Hound and the Mountain at the same time. Lu Bu and Diao Chan die together, Jaime and Cersei die together.
9@@jonathansenile4396 The Hound skill is at Gafgarion's level. Even if Hound uses cheap tricks, Jaime is prepared as despite being a knight, Jaime is a master of detecting deception/sabotage. I wish they had more scenes of him sword fighting before being taken hostage. Just to showcase how good he was. It never felt like he was that good of a sword fighter. He wasn't bad but he wasn't legendary as described by others.
@@isaacalzate8262 yeah but the point is we never actually see him being that good cause the actor who plays him sucks at fighting despite his cocky attitude
Because Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was unconvincing as an elite swordfighter. It honestly wasn't a very good casting choice, although he was great in the non-fighting scenes.
I actually like the snark from Jamie here. Really does make it seem that he's a great swordsman not just due to skill, but due to what he does during combat. Amping up his opponents, teasing them and basically messing with them. Potentially even strategically so. Gives the swordsmanship a flare aside from just movement, and fits very much the sort of Jamie we meet early on. Also brings some emphasis to his development and how he shifts
They had so many cool scenes and such a good story arc of jaime being her teacher, and Brienne being something jaime could actually care about beyond his family. Then the final episode ran... so I just imagine the last episode never happened.

As Colonel Wolodyjowski would say, "They're swinging as if with flails". GoT fight scenes always required quite a bit of suspension of disbelief, especially when I was supposed to pretend that such and such person is amazingly skilled.
Barristan Selmy against the cult people or whatever they were was probably the worst. The man was described as a painter with a sword and the actor they chose to play him could barely even hold one.
It goes to show how good Jamie really was, he was tired, malnourished, had been a prisoner and wore the same clothes for a year, yet he still puts up a good fight
Tony Wilczynski Finally. we have heard of all the great deeds of Jaime off screen, including when Robb capturing him being said that he took down 20 men, but we never really SAW any of it. i go with Waldau not wanting to do great choreographies Arthue Dayne style at all
Oh, it's not like he at this point had starved for about a year, was malnourished and weak, had JUST begun to walk again after being sat down his whole imprisonment, thus fucking up his legs. I mean, come on.. It's not THAT hard to know what's going on. Jamie was not portrayed anything like Dayne or himself in his prime, because he isn't meant to be like that in this scene.
Has most likely more something to with how the show is handled by the produceres, who are total hacks and can't write properly for the life of them. As proven with Dorne, and generally the whole season 5. Also, not like we havn't seen them do this before, (Berristan Selmy got the same shitty treatment).
Series started off well, but would love to to see the rise of the elders, or everybody at their best form. We were robbed of seeing Jaime, Robert, Rhaegar, Dorn Fighters, and others in their primes that created the setting for this series
@@Jacob-vs1ez Yes, it was hard to see. Which is why it was so shocking seeing it go bad that quickly. Season 5 is still good, Season 6 is already showing issues, but overall quite enioyable. From season 7 on it takes a nose dive into a pile of horseshit. Season 8 is so terrible that it is hard for me to believe it isnt a form of satire. But then again, the writers of that show started deviating from the books and writing their own plots and thats what we got. Especially in terms of dialogues quite early on.
After all this time I think I found out what this show did wrong at Jaime right here. In the books, Jaime, even in this dreary state, is so good of a swordsman that Brienne almost doesn't stand a chance. Do you know how this show should have depicted that? I have just watched the duel from Troy between Brad Pitt (Achilles/god) and Hector. Brad Pitt is very calm during the fight and you can see that even though he moves fast as HELL, he is breathing slowly and steadily. Hector is getting more and more tired, breathing super fast, and getting drenched in sweat, his hair is oily and he can't keep up with Brad's pace. Brad Pitt employs EXTREME stability in his legs, for example when he lands from a jump he doesn't even boggle for one centimeter, he lands and stays in that position like a solid marble statue. Hector, in opposition, stumbles over a rock. Even in the movements it looks like Brad has something like a 6th sense that helps him predict Hectors attacks, and you can really FEEL the gap between a God at work, and a mere human, Hector. One last thing, you can see that Brad plays with Hector like with a toy. He could have killed him many times during the fight, but chose not to, when he punched Hector with his fist, or even just pushed him away with his bare hand. That's another way to further show his supremacy over Hector.
Hector stood his ground as long as humanly possible vs half god. After this Achilles was super pissed off and dragged him few circles around Troy to mock Hector stubbornness and arrogancy.
0:22, It's a relatively small detail, but not only does Jaime expertly switch from abrasive spoiled royal to expert fighter in barely a second, but he further demonstrates his skill with how quickly and cleanly he slices the rope binding him right before he resumes his playful banter.
I love Jamie's attempted shoulder-shove that fails utterly. Being a good swordsman is one thing...but being stupid enough to think that you can defeat a fighter in full armor after being half-starved and abused really takes the cake.
Notice how Jaime was actually giving Brienne a hard time at first it wasn't until towards the end he was starting to get tired and Brienne had the advantage
It's a shame that the show couldn't display Jaime's legendary sword skills. Brienne was better than most knights of Westeros but Jaime was one of those exceptional natural swordsmen who come about in a century or so. This is further reinforced by her own testimony that it took all of her skill and strength to keep the Kingslayer at bay. Unhampered and at full strength no one could have stood before him.
Yeah; When Locke does what he does a few episodes from now, we see it, but don't truly _feel_ it because the show never really showed us Jaime at his best. It's still a great scene, but it tells a different story to the books; TV show Jaime is a good swordsman, sure, but over-praised due to his family name, raised to the kingsguard prematurely due to Aerys' animosity towards his father, and his fall from grace (and hence later redemption) begins, not with a lisping psychopath sellsword, but here on the bridge, beaten in pretty short order by a woman, not even a knight, who he arrogantly assumed to be lesser than himself.
He said grimace. As in an angered-like expression. Dis-tasteful expression. In essence, he was saying by making that face you reveal that you are about to attack.
This comment was meant to be replied to someone, directly... For whatever God-awful reason, TH-cam Mobile fails to pinpoint my desired location. Someone in the comments could not decipher what Jaime tells Briene. So shove your no shits where the sun don't shine.
"You shouldn't grimace before you lunge it gives away the game." *Immediately grimaces as he makes his next move* That aside though I fucking love this scene. Jaime's excitement and confidence with a sword in his hand for the first time in months, Brienne dropping into stance refusing to back down from one of the greatest swordsman alive. These two are about it when it comes to swordplay and it's awesome, sucks they never got to fight or spar with an even playing field, Jaime's at a huge disadvantage here but even at full strength with armor it would definitely be a fight
No, it wouldn't. The ONLY reason Brienne gets out of this fight alive is because he's been a prisoner for a year, starved and exhausted. In the books, he still outfights her even in this state and she decides to wrestle him with her superior strength. The show made it more even because that's somehow more cinematic, but the books scene is much more in line with the lore and both characters.
I like how the longer the fight goes on the more Brienne realizes Jaime is getting weaker and weaker and she goes from 2 hands to 1. If he was a tad healthier he probably could’ve beaten her in the beginning, but because she was able to defend well in the start, he started losing the final reserves he had and she was able to treat him more bluntly. It started as life and death, and ended with a thump as he collapses from exhaustion, she barely even needs to hit him. She even starts to look at him differently as the fight drags on, starting extremely wary and defensive, and ending kind of annoyed and aggressively battering his sword away.
Yeah, there’s a line in the book about her thoughts in the fight. I’m not gonna directly quote it but she basically says that she knew that Jaime was exhausted after being a prisoner for so long, out of practice, and had his hands chained together and still put up a fight and clearly acknowledges that if Jaime were in better health he would’ve mopped the floor with her
@@JakeKoenig They could've made it seem good, no actor knows how to use the long sword, and its just choreography, and after like 1 move they could cut and shoot the next one. So they could've made it work easily, i ques the lore couldn't find him anymore opponents that would've had change to beat him and after losing the hand he could've used the gold hand as a shield and then we could have few scenes more where he fights with his left hand.
In the books Brienne's inner thoughts reveal that she doesn't believe she could have beaten Jaime if he wasn't slowed by the chains. Even with his handicap she still had a hard time against him.
It’s such a damn shame we never really got to see Jaime fighting and dominating with his hand in this show…it would’ve been great to see him on the battlefield against Rob’s men just going ham.
@@J1283-s1k it got stuck on his way to Robb... by then, his elite companions were down and he was alone and surrounded. As great as younare, at that point it's game over.
This is still one of the best scenes in the series IMO, just two knights duking it out in the middle of nowhere. Also Brienne vs The Hound, and The Hound and Arya vs Joffrey's men in the Tavern. The road always had that dangerous feel when characters were travelling and we never knew what was going to happen. Gods the show was strong then...
Back when it took time (multiple episodes) to travel from one end of the continent to another, and it was possible for characters to encounter danger and death while traveling. Vs. the later seasons when characters just teleport across the map when the plot demands it
@@bait5257 I just read an excerpt of their fight, where he gets exhausted quicker bc his skills decayed while imprisoned, how she kept cutting him and it chilled him to realize she was stronger. That’s exactly how I and most show-watchers interpreted it, what would you have added or changed to this scene to make it more faithful to his written character?
@@TheFreshTrumpet You literally cut the most important part, POV of brienne. I know it's not possible in the show but at least indicate it in any way. In this scene it more look likes breinne's time to shine moment. Also, they added the unnecessary ned vs Jamie so now people think ned is on Par with Jamie. Jamie was supposed to be the strongest until he lost his hand. But the show never ever showed any sign of it Edit : the pov mentions how she thinks she had no chance of winning if Jamie wasn't chained or exhausted
He had no armor, no training for over a year, had his hands chained up, dirty, and had walked hundreds of miles (tired) Now tell me, who do you think would've won.

I never read the books, so maybe this is hinted at. I think Jaime overestimated his cunning. He knew he might be at a disadvantage physically in a fight with her, but I think he counted on his trash talk to throw her off, as it did most other people. The problem is that because she had to put up with talk and demeaning behavior on an almost daily basis being a woman knight, she was unfazed by his attempts to get in her head.
No, the show never did justice to Jamie's sword skills. In the books the circumstances are similar but Brienne was barely able to keep up with Jamie even with movement advantage and stamina as well, Jamie is very weak and hasn't touched a sword in almost a year. But you can't have a man be better than a woman in something on TV, so Brienne beats Jamie with almost no effort
@@LordSkullkid In the book, after Brienne defends against Jaime's relentless assault and he peters out, she tackles him into the water and dashes his skull against some rocks in the shallows. Here, she just disarms him with no damage done after doing the exact same strategy. Just say you hate women and go.
@@SevereOutcast first of all she disarmed Jamie with almost no effort. And yes in the book she tackles him and defeated him that way. I don't hate women, I hate how they were portayed in this show. GRRM said himself that if he was to choose a warrior dor a trial by combat he would hace chosen either Arthur Dayne of Jamie Lannister, but because of them was dead and Jamie lost a hand he chose Brienne. Meaning Jamie Lannister is a better swordsman and in this scene was easily defeated
@@SevereOutcast great interpretation, she tackles him why? It's like you don't know how to read, stop being dishonest, this scene does no credit to Jaime.
@@LordSkullkid That's because the books did a poor job with this. GRR Martin, for all his talent as an author, doesn't have a clue what swordfighting is like. I don't care how skilled Jamie is. If he's that weak and tired, he wouldn't last five minutes against a skilled swordsman or woman. This is one area where the show is better than the books.
At first I didn’t like the fighting as it looked like she was pulling her strikes. But as soon as I thought about it and realized she wasn’t even trying to kill him, the pulling back made a lot more sense and made the scene that much better.
Speaks to Jaime's skill that he gave Brienne a fight even though his hands were chained and he was weakened by malnourishment and fatigue from being a prisoner for so long. If he was as fresh as Brienne was here, I doubt she lasts long against him.
In my quest to find out how good Jaime Lannister was, I found this from A Feast of Crows, "Brienne remembered her fight with Jaime Lannister in the woods. It had been all that she could do to keep his blade at bay. He was weak from his imprisonment, and chained at the wrists. No knight in the Seven Kingdoms could have stood against him at his full strength, with no chains to hamper him." With that in mind, this fight is a bit of a character assassination against Jaime.
Not really. I'll bet that the choreographer read that, snorted, and said "well, that's stupid as hell, let's do an actual realistic fight". I can see Jamie holding his own, but actually forcing Brienne back? When he's that weak? I don't care how skilled he is. Unless he has magic powers, he still loses in very short order. Either he kills Brienne in the first thirty seconds (and doesn't, because she's pretty darn good in her own right) or she wins.

Mark Livsey And as I already said, he was in the EXACT condition in the books, and this fight wasn't nearly as one sided. So that's no excuse.
His longsword grew heavier with every blow, and Jaime knew he was not swinging it as quickly as he'd done earlier, nor raising it as high._
_She is stronger than I am. The realization chilled him._
The end result felt very much the same as the show depicted.
+ChaoticNarrative You still cant deny Brienne had an advantage making her win the fight
I'm not denying it, what I mean to say is, regardless, she won, it's like Fencers whom whine about losing to a leftie, the fact is... they lost, or indeed getting a bad hand in cards.
ChaoticNarrative I know, but his point is, that Brienne isn't a fighter as great as Jaime or The Hound, she just had luck with the time she faced them
Aye, though she is a great warrior, she's not as great as Jaime at his best, the same could probably be said if she got the chance to fight Eddard Stark, however, in The Hounds Case, I'd say they were evenly matched, that bite from Rorge niggled him a bit but it didn't have an effect in the fight and Sure, she smashed him about with a rock when he had no rock or sword at the end of the fight, but... what is chivalry compared to life, The Hound would have done the same thing.
Damn man sorry to hear that what was your sport?
i do combat sports and 2 weeks of not doing the sport is brutal ,,, cant imagine 10 months lmao
In the book Brienne admires how a malnourished and chained Jaime Lannister can fight that well. And she's thankful he's not unchained. She had brute force him when she realized she's not Besting him in swords play. She later urges him to keep living when he gives up on life after he lost his sword's hand.
And now in season 8 Jamie finally gets his sword in her.
He did the old penetrate then dip method

The look on Jaime's face at 2:07 is just hilarious. It's like "Wait... am I LOSING? How is this happening? THIS IS ILLEGAL"
He tried a shoulder check and she just shrugged him off.

That fight costed Jaime's right hand.
yes it did
Brienne choosing not to kill the merchant they passed on the road was the biggest mistake.
Ansatsouken She is not evil.Valueable quality for a person which costs with a heavy price in a place like Westeros
Yeah, you're right, she's definitely not evil, very just in her thinking, but way too trusting too. It cost Jamie his hand, but we can only hope it will save Sansa's life in weeks to come!
Ansatsouken Let us hope you are right.
didn't Jamie almost win in the book? thats what always bothered me with this scene
the show couldn't handle brienne losing any fight
Yea iirc they cut each other pretty well before being captured
@Schwanzus Longus see how quick the writers made her lose to Arya? Apparently only a woman can defeat her, women have this unreal sort of power in GoT. They must've been confused as to whether they should make one woman be unrealistically powerful, or the other. So they decided that Arya would beat her easily, even though that doesn't make sense because they have different fighting styles that they both seem to have learnt well, one style cannot simply be better than the other, they both have their own sorts of experience
@Schwanzus Longus I dunno man. Consider that they absolutely ruined the most powerful and inspiring female characters in the series (Dany).
@Schwanzus Longus Ehhhh I don't think it's "muh feminism" I think Jaimie losing this fight is fairly realistic. Hes in no condition to fight. Though I think it should have showcased his skill a little more.
That look she gave him at 1:47 when she was circling him, showed she hit 99th level boss pissed and had about enough of his bullshit, LOL!

Doubtful, Locke was a great hunter, he also had the advantage of a lot more men and more importantly, horses. They may have paced a while longer, but if Locke was diligent, he would have caught up to them on the same day, probably less than an hour.
I know I am 4 years late, but I always come back to these videos.
he would of lost his hand, and Briene her life if not for that. They were going to catch him and take his head regardless. and her life would of been taken if not for jaime mentioning the Sapphires. Lockehardt or however you spell his name is a cunt like ramsey. LUL
True
0:31 Jaime never saw Arthur Dayne fighting? XD
+theo konstantellos Maybe he was using lighter swords...
Ser Gerald Hightower could wield two probably as well as barristan and Jon snow maybe in the future
"Great beast of a woman" lol Jamie comes out with some classics
There is also that look of the Vale knight as Tyrion announces Jaime as his choice for champion.
@@victorymansions Brienne has the additional disadvantage that Jaime mentions at 1:25 - he wants to kill her, but she doesn't want to kill him (because she's supposed to exchange him for Sansa and Arya)

Because Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was unconvincing as an elite swordfighter. He looked unathletic and uncoordinated in his fights with Ned and Brienne, despite all the video cuts and camera angles to try and make it look better.

Barristan Selmy against the cult people or whatever they were was probably the worst. The man was described as a painter with a sword and the actor they chose to play him could barely even hold one.
This show always has a knack of putting brienne in the spotlight when it comes to fighting handicapped people
It goes to show how good Jamie really was, he was tired, malnourished, had been a prisoner and wore the same clothes for a year, yet he still puts up a good fight
and he's been walking in same shoes for a long time. truly a fighter
He was starved, dragged, and weak but still could sword fight damn Jamie.
I miss these two... Every scene together they had was done so well with the actor and actress having good work chemistry.
i often wonder if the producers just hate him or if nikolaj coster-waldau cant be bothered learning to fight the way Jaime actually would.
The first comment I see that actually mentions the big bummer of this whole fight...
Tony Wilczynski Finally. we have heard of all the great deeds of Jaime off screen, including when Robb capturing him being said that he took down 20 men, but we never really SAW any of it. i go with Waldau not wanting to do great choreographies Arthue Dayne style at all
They whole scene looked fairly abysmal.
Even after all these years of the bitterness of season 8, I am considering watching this great show again.
Is season 8 that bad? I’m on season 5 right now and it’s hard to see it falling off.
@@Glory264 yes

0:22, It's a relatively small detail, but not only does Jaime expertly switch from abrasive spoiled royal to expert fighter in barely a second, but he further demonstrates his skill with how quickly and cleanly he slices the rope binding him right before he resumes his playful banter.
Brienne immediately drawing her sword as soon as jaime stole hers just tells us how dangerous jaime is.

I love how Brienne makes a horse sound at the very end.

That aside though I fucking love this scene.
If jaime just run away ,he still got his hand. With that heavy armor, she would never chase him 😂😂😂
I like how the longer the fight goes on the more Brienne realizes Jaime is getting weaker and weaker and she goes from 2 hands to 1.
I’m not gonna directly quote it but she basically says that she knew that Jaime was exhausted after being a prisoner for so long, out of practice, and had his hands chained together and still put up a fight and clearly acknowledges that if Jaime were in better health he would’ve mopped the floor with her
Feminist bullshit 😂
Brienne admits that if Jaime was on his peak condition, she has no chance of winning let alone surviving.
And so the foreplay began
Its a shame that we didn't get to see more of Jamie's Sword fighting.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau sucked at it, that's why.

It’s such a damn shame we never really got to see Jaime fighting and dominating with his hand in this show…it would’ve been great to see him on the battlefield against Rob’s men just going ham.

Doesn’t change the fact that he still lost
It is sad for me to watch all those great epic scenes knowing how it all ends in one of the greatest disasters ever seen in filmmaking.
I love how her confidence and anger grows to where she is just toying with Jamie and fights with one hand.
That's just show off
Considering Jaime conditions, at that point he was probably out of stamina and energies. Malnutrition and exhaustion are douches.
That’s because Jaime was getting tired and you know what happens when you get tired.
The books have Jaimie pretty much beating Brienne.
But the show went the "strong female protagonist" route

0:30-0:40 The few expressions of genuine joy that we see from Jaime, in this series, is when he has a sword in his hand.

Listen to the tauntive cunning in his voice.
He sounds exactly like Tyrion!
In my quest to find out how good Jaime Lannister was, I found this from A Feast of Crows, "Brienne remembered her fight with Jaime Lannister in the woods. It had been all that she could do to keep his blade at bay. He was weak from his imprisonment, and chained at the wrists. No knight in the Seven Kingdoms could have stood against him at his full strength, with no chains to hamper him."
With that in mind, this fight is a bit of a character assassination against Jaime.
@@Cailus3542 Except that's not how it was written in the books. I'm all for taking poetic license but all through the show we were told his reputation but he was found lacking almost every single time.
@@Cailus3542what the fuck are you talking about? did u read the books? Because that's exactly what happens lol
Jaime and Barristan in terms of their combat abilities were heavily downplayed by Dumb and Dumber.
@@Cailus3542 Yeah it's not realistic, but this is the same series in which Gregor Clegane exists, the 8 foot tall monster who can crush skulls with his hands. It doesn't need to be super realistic, Jaime is an near invincible monster with a sword before he lost his hand.
