When you think about it, Cassandra dying dramatically in her own arms is incredibly on point for her character.
To clarify any confusion, Cassandra going to see her past self is the same party shown earlier. Being it was the last time "someone" told her that she looked beautiful. And in the end revealing it was actually herself that said it, which was a great way for her to accept her own mortality and show the interconnected timeline.
I also love the connection that she designed him after seeing him at that party and didn’t realize that she was in that body.
You just know that David Tennant and Billie Piper must have had great fun playing at having Cassandra inside them. And yes, one of the joys of Dr Who is that you can find yourself unexpectedly moved by someone you thought was terrible. Excellent episode, excellent emotional reaction as always.
I thought they were amazing in that scene! Both of them really seemed to take it in their stride. It was awesome 😅
so fun fact in the lift scene David Tennant was aware what was going to happen but Billie Piper had no idea what would happen so her reaction to everything is completely genuine
Also, David got a warm shower, Billie got a cold one.
Beat me to it, i belive the cassandra kiss "yeah, still got it" was a surprise as well, but i don't really know for sure
@osanneart9318 -Ahh, using the Alfred Hitchcock "Psycho" method then!
@@osanneart9318 The water started warm but with each take it for colder and colder
Actually, she did, except the water was supposed to be warm. It was for him, but they left it cold to surprised her and get a genuine reaction out of her. So funny. 😂
Billie Piper is SUCH a great actress. She's remarkable in this one. 😍🥰🤩
She really is
I mean, so is David Tennant, playing a middle class woman.
I was gonna say, sometimes I feel like she doesn't get enough credit for the total change in character in this episode lol
It’s amazing how much of a fan favorite the Face of Boe became, considwring how few scenes he’s actually in and how little we actually know about him.
Not ENTIRELY accurate 😂
Well we know one thing about him😂
The end scene always gets me too, Zoe Wanamaker is so beautiful there! It's extra poignant because you realise Cassandra was her own mysterious visitor, and she probably made chip look the way he did because she remembers what that person looked like all those years ago, so she made someone who would adore her forever based off the last person to ever compliment her. A self-fulfilling prophecy. So happy to see you going into season 2 so quickly, I'm always excited to see your videos go up!
"I never thought __________ would make me cry" and "I never thought I'd be scared of ______________" are common responses to Doctor Who :).
I can definitely see that now as I didn't think I'd ever feel sad for (insert name here) 😱
Don't forget "I'll never accept another Doctor after _______."
Great observation, yes! 😅🤝
Especially when Steven Moffat has written the episode.... 🤭
I love Rose/Cassandra's line of "I'm a chav!" when she first wakes up. Such a funny line coming from her.
Does unfortunately rather date the episode, though, now. Less than 20 years on and that word has basically fallen out of common use, but hey who knows what happens in 5 billion years, eh?
It was so good to finally hear Rose admit to being a chav even if it was really Cassandra of Rhyme saying it.
@@AmazingChihuh? it's used all the time?
@AmazingChi Fallen out of common use? Where do you live? It's still everywhere in 2023.
@@somerandomguy2073what does it mean?
the last person to tell Cassandra that she is beautiful is herself. I cry every time at that ending.
I never thought she'd make me cry 😭
Never apologize for becoming emotional, we call it "having a Whovian-soul" .
And we all love the Face of Boe, he's having such an impact, even only of the short of time we've seen him. He just has that power, somehow.
I won't give any spoilers, I'm just gonna say, the Face of Boe has a GREAT story behind him. It's short, simple, and to the point, but you won't miss it when it happens, and you'll absolutely LOVE it when you see it!
Awww nice! I'm looking forward to learning more about him. He seems so lovely 💜
Yeah, I'm bouncing up and down in my seat right now. I'm so excited for how this particular plot thread pays off in the end.
Yes, it's very special. We're not going to spoil it for you but we're all looking forwards to you finding out for yourself.
Yes, the story is masterfully done
@@julesreacts don't hold your breath...
Big props to the incredible composer Murray Gold. He did the music for the show from 2005 to 2017.
I LOVE this episode! It's pure and silly Doctor Who comedy with a really quite touching end. I've seen it so many times and I always cry; it's beautifully done. I think part of what makes it poignant is that we see Cassandra show genuine compassion as a human at the end, suggesting that her evilness only really developed later through her fear of death.
I find it funny when Cassandra says "goodbye trampoline, hello blondie". The moment indicates that Rose's insult in Series 1, Episode 2 (B*tchy trampoline) really got under her skin (no pun intended!).
Also, not all the cat people are bad; it just so happens that the ones in charge of this hospital have gone a bit power mad and have lost their moral/ethical compass along the way.
Billie Piper didn't know that she would be squirted with water in the lift. Russell T. Davies kept it in the final cut as he thought it was too funny to cut it. David Tennant wanted to watch this happen for the first time.
All of Billie Piper and David Tennant's dialogue when they first arrive on New Earth had to be re-dubbed in the studio, as the windy conditions on the location shoot made it difficult for the microphones to pick their lines up.
Filming was briefly delayed when Billie Piper became ill.
This is a really good ending. Not only a kind act of the Doctor's, but showing past Cassandra being very caring to someone she doesn't know.
Cassandra says at the start that this was the last time anyone told her she was beautiful, and it was herself.
So, Juliette, how freaked out would you be to wake up and find out that your cats were now human sized, bipedal, well-spoken and....NUNS?😛
Human sized probably NOT a good thing to happen as my cats are crazy 🤣 AND between that last sentence and this one, ONE OF MY CATS STEPPED IN MY COFFEE CUP ON MY DESK WITH COFFEE STILL IN IT 😤
Totally get the emotion. That scene always hits me too in the feels. The fact she remembers the last time someone told her that and then it ends up being her own mind saying it at the end - amazing writing Russell is a genius
Billie Piper wanted to do more of a comedic episode, so she went to the writers, and they came up with this episode. The way Rose mimicked Cassandra was just spot-on, and the Doctor's was just priceless. I can't remember her name, but Cassandra was the same actress from the first Harry Potter as the broom flying instructor. There are a few things to keep in mind about future episodes, but spoilers are a no-no.
Her name I believe is Zoe something I can't spell her last name

This is my favorite David Tennant episode. It shows how the Doctor has changed after his time with Rose. Cassandra showing up again and being shown mercy this time contrasts with how the Doctor dealt with her previously.
It's a little thing but I love the scene where Cassandra returns to Rose after having been in one of the infected and she shows empathy for them. The Doctor, having been mid-scolding, stops and takes her hand. I think it establishes who Tennant's Doctor is. I watch this episode often when I'm feeling down.
Love the acting in this episode so much. Fun fact if no one's mentioned it yet; Billie's actual voice is closer to the voice she's doing for Cassandra!Rose than it is Rose's regular voice. I know this ep gets mixed reviews, but I think it's emotional and honestly a realistic portrayal of how people treat sickness and sick people (speaking as a disabled person who's currently 3+ years into a pandemic where people like me have been told our isolation and sickness/death is worth it if other people can live)
That's rough I'm autistic and get told online and in real life that it can be cured and that it's a result of vaccines and that I don't deserve to be here though I don't fully know about your experience it's not sunshine and rainbows all the time when you are disabled
@@Andy-the-crow i'm autistic too :)
I have to say I LOVE how authentic your reactions are when watching these episodes. I feel like my own reactions are very similar to yours, in that I also feel sad at certain parts of the episode like when Cassandra is dying in her own arms (which is quite poetic). These reactions really do brighten up my week, so thank you so much for sharing them with us! 😄
Thank you so much 🥹🥹 that means the world to me!! I'm so glad you're enjoying the episodes 💜
The magic of the Tennant years as the doctor (for me, anyway) was the ability to jump from humour to drama to anger to pathos all in one episode (sometimes all in one sentence!). It was a combination, I think, of Tennant himself with great stories, great writing and great direction.
The actors must have had so much fun doing this episode! And the Face of Boe shows up again.
Chip might be what is called a bootstrap paradox, chip is cassandras favourite imprint because chip was the last one to say she's beautiful, but it was her from the future in chips body saying it, so it's a circle but chip only exists because of it.
YES!!! Finally continuing.
This season has SUCH great episodes. I'm already so excited, it's so cruel having to wait a whole week for a new reaction... I can't even say, which episodes, I don't wanna spoil anything in advance....😅🤭😫
I cannot wait for more!! It's better than I ever expected it would be 🥰🥰🥰
@@julesreacts Good to hear. I had the exact same feeling when I first watched. 🥰😘
David Tennant acting as Cassandra in his body is 10/10.
Looking back, bit of a trial run for Crowley haha.
I love this episode coz I feel like David and Billie must have had so much fun with it!
The thing about the Cat people and what they were doing - it reflects on how modern medicine was developed - it was really only in the last 80 years or so that we stopped experimenting on one person to cure others and even now we do it, but in a much more controlled way.
About Cassandra, the trick with understanding how time travel effects things - think of her life as a simple progression - it does not matter if she goes back in time when she is, say 40, that doesn't effect the timeline she has experienced - her at 20 will not change, and then she could go forward to the day after she left and everything would still be the same. Only if she went back in time and changed something that was important to her life at an earlier point. So if she went back in time to when she was 20 and killed herself, then everything past that point with be changed and she would never have lived the rest of her life. But other than something like that, traveling through time is no different that taking a trip to another country or another planet. Not sure if that helps or not.
"Two hearts! Oh baby, I'm beating out a samba!" 😆🤣
"And a little bit foxy. You thought so too. I've been inside your head. You've been looking. You like it." Heeee. Doesn't everyone? 😉😍 I love Ten.
The body switching back and forth is so much fun.
He is SO flirty and I love it 😍😍 Rose better be careful hehe
The place of filming for the hospital is the Wales Millennium Centre. Its an amazing building built of Slate and Copper mined in Wales. It is in Cardiff. During Boom Town of season one. The Tardis lands just outside it.
Also I love this episode. I love the fact that 9 took rose to the end of the world for their first adventure where they met cassandra and face of Boe. And this adventure rrally upset her. And then 10 took her to the new earth to show her that life carries on and that the human race will continue in some form🥰🥺
I live not far from there. It’s stunning
You were spot on with the elevator medicine! The part where Cassandra is going back and forth is testament to how good Billie Piper and David Tennant were to embody the personality of Cassandra! (Can you just imagine what havoc she would have wreaked on the universe with immortality and a time machine? Bullet dodged!) By their very nature, cats are shifty. They plot to destroy you while sitting atop the bookshelf, relish in the fact that you clean their "messes" but then give you affection and purries just to throw you off! hehe These reactions are so fun and are quickly becoming a highlight, as brief as these videos are! Looking forward to the next one!
Thank you, Arthur!! I'm so glad to hear you're enjoying the episodes. It's so much fun to share them here ☺️
Supposedly this episode came about partly because Billie Piper wanted the chance to do more comedic acting, and you can tell she's having a ton of fun as Cassandra
I honestly love watching these videos you make. For me it's like reliving the first time I watched these episodes. Thank you!
Thank you SO much! I appreciate that a lot as so much time and effort goes into each one 😸
One of my favorite quotes from this series is the whole "That was taken from the front of my body - this is the back" , "So you're talking out of your..." It gets me cackling every time lol! Also one of my favorite scenes is when Cassandra and the Doctor interact and she jumps from her to him - it is so fabulously insane and hillarious and I think both Tennent and Piper really hit it out of the ballpark with their acting chops!
Upon watching this with you - I think I've come to realize something - when you said you were surprised that she gave in to that so quickly...I think she realized something herself. At the start of the show, she made the comment while watching the film of herself that that night was the last time anyone had called her beautiful - she also said that Chip was based on her favorite artist or painting or something - I think when she went into chip and saw herself as the walking doodle and realizes that chip's body is failing, I think she realized that it was meant to be, because she might have remembered that night and who told her she was beautiful. It's a fixed point I think..it always happens that way because it was the Doctor who made that happen for her.
Like when Rose tells her mum that she met dad. Her interference changed it ever so slightly. Pete still had to die, but she was there with him as he died and as a result, her mum told her a slightly altered story, and her mum realized that she HAD seen Rose then and knew that she was telling the truth and that is why she helped Rose by pulling in a favor for the yellow truck. Or like the Pompeii episode with Donna - he still has to do it to save the world from pyroviles but he was able to make a small change and to go back and save that family because of the influence of his companions...how they affect and change the Doctor throughout his regenerations!
I love that in the end Cassandra was not a very bad person.
What a lovely first (not counting the christmas special as much as I love it) outing for our new Doctor. A nice mix of new character moments for Rose, The Doctor, and the ethically questionable cat nurses with returning familiar faces like Cassandra and The Face of Boe (who, side note - I adore his theme in the soundtrack (though really I adore this whole show's soundtrack)).
It's also a good balance of funny/silly while still being dark and raising some ethical questions regarding the test subjects. The funniest bit of the episode has to be the few instances where one character cuts another off right before theyre about to swear, but with a similar sounding word to the swear they were about to use. Well, that and David Tennant acting as Cassandra.
I love how this episode is Very Dark if you allow yourself to think about its contents, Yet its one of the funniest ones i can think of
10:20 Every Doctor has a few signature lines. One of Ten's is "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry". You'll be hearing that one often, and in similar circumstances. Nine had of course "Fantastic!".
"Is he going to go fix everyone" He's the Doctor, that's exactly what he does
You are in for a treat over the next 8 or 9 episodes
Amen to that. Series 2 is just pure joy, or pure heartbreak, depending on the scene. And it is glorious.
Hah, 'Marconi’s disease' and the patient is making Morse code noises. 😂
Funny, sad, ridiculous episode. Your reaction was beautiful, lots of tears and laughter. Perfect.
I said youd live this iteration of the Doctor. It only gets better but that wont be the last time you'll cry! Keep tissues close by.
I have shares in tissue factories now hehe 🤣

No reactors ever seem to notice the cheeky cut of
"That dirty little ...."
"... bit rich."
Oh really? That's why I left it in and was laughing! I guess you didn't notice haha
Mickey just can’t let go. Poor Mickey. I found this episode a lot of fun. Don’t think too hard about the “science” and go for the ride. I very much like the old style sci fi moral issues with “the flesh” (can’t call ‘em human or the research goes out the window). Kinda chilling, but within a very very fun episode. I love this episode. And the Doctor! So different and yet so the same.
Doctor Who does emotionally laden scenes/episodes/stories so well. And, poor you, reacting to two shows that can both twist your heart or rip it to shreds at a moment's notice.
I know 🥹 it's a bit rough... I think next series will have to be something a little less heartbreaking!
Hey Jules ❤ this is another one of my all-time favorite episodes
Chip was based on Cassandra’s favourite pattern - a pattern which she saw on a man dying in her arms when she was younger….this is a little narcissistic but kinda poetic for the character 😂
Russell t Davies likes to add little "feels" moments, even in unexpected ways and he does it WELL!!!
I like how emotional you're finding Doctor Who so far. :)
The more emotional, the better 💜
Cassandra could only love herself, so the ending was perfect. The circle closed. The last person who ever called her beautiful waa herself. Very poetic. :)
4:40 Oh, you have no idea, dear. 😅
That moment hits even harder, once you know the full truth....
Casandra's "Rose" voice is actually a slightly dramatised version of Billie Piper's actual voice
I always cry at the end of this one, too, but I've never been quite able to explain why. It's just a beautiful, bittersweet moment. I love the cat people; what a strange and fun idea for an alien species! 🐈
❤
And they just had to make the cats a little bit evil 😅
"Cassandra" is played by Zoe Wanamaker, a brilliant and successful stage, film and tv actress, daughter of the American actor, producer and film director Sam Wanamaker. These early season of New Who were superb. So much to look forward to!
I so love to rewatch DW with you, such a refreshing experience for a fan like me ❤
Oh thank you!! That is so lovely to hear 💜
4:40 The Murray Gold magic.
6:59 The lonely God statement in itself SIMPLY in reference to the entirety of the show (as I call back to my years of devotion to this series) in his travels, companions, and experiences throughout his countless adventures through time and space, there is absolutely no shame in the tears you cried at the end. It is a call back in exchanges like this between the Face of Boe and others that truly tug the heartstrings. I will never apologize for a single tear I shed when it comes to Doctor Who, as you shouldn't either, because it is completely and one hundred percent understood by all us Whovians as well, Jules.
Matthew, thank you so much for your kind words! I love that you feel so deeply for this show. It's definitely worth it 🥰

Well written comedy episode. Haven't watched the Tennet run in quite some time because of Rose, I need to go back and give the stories another watch for the stories.
It's just been amazing!!
David is a fan of the classic series. A bit young for the very start, more into the later seventies and into the eighties. One of his previous television roles was Casanova. So . . yup! . . . Still got it!
Billie Piper was not told what was going to happen in the hospital elevator, so the surprised reaction at being doused with disinfectant was genuine.
Urban legend.
I love that so much 🤣
@@julesreacts someone made it up. Who would believe she wasn't made aware of what was happening in that scene.
The ending of this episode always gets me emotional too! I never thought about why it did, but the way you described it, with such an act of kindness being shown to someone who wasn’t kind, was perfect. The Doctor’s kindness to Cassandra in turn showed how kind she could be, with her cradling and soothing a dying Chip/ Future Cassandra. It’s almost like a surreal act of self love, with Cassandra dying being told by herself how beautiful she is.
It was so moving!! I loved this one. Never ever would have I expected to cry over Cassandra, of all people/skin things 🤣
Yeah, the Face of Bo definitely has charisma. Always has.
They showed Cassandra watching the video of the night she would later go back to, because it was the last time someone told her she was beautiful. This set up that, when the Doctor takes her back to that moment, it was Cassandra in Chip's body who was the one who told her she was beautiful that final time. Cassandra, in Chip, is the one who died. Full body human Cassandra will live her life exactly as she originally did, as the implications are that this is how that night always played out; she just never knew until just before her death that she was the person who approached her.
It wouldn't be impossible to see that iteration of Cassandra again, or some version of her prior to her death - or even prior to becoming a stretch piece of skin - but there's no reason for that iteration of Cassandra to have any memories of her two encounters to date with the Doctor, because they haven't happened to her yet.
I love how the doctor knew something was up with her thats why he was asking her what to do if the mainframe was locked etc. He could tell something was off about her. I love how angry he gets when anything is wrong with her.
Aaaww I'm glad Cassandra got a happy ending. She's a bit of a madam, but I really liked her!
David Tennant's time as the Doctor... Just wow. Christopher Eccleston was The Doctor that was wracked with Survivor's Guilt after the Time Wars, where David's is the one that's learning to live again.
Very true ☺️
"Is he gonna fix everyone? It's not possible! He can't do that!" Get used to it, Jules. He's the Doctor. 😎
Very true 🤣
@@julesreacts ALSO... it's safe to assume that the Doctor is on alert at all times. The fact that Rose didn't make it to him right away, was speaking strangely, and then just straight kissed him out of nowhere definitely raised red flags, he's just the king of playing dumb until the last moment. 😁 God I love this show.
The first season was insane. But it really was a slow beginning of things to come. I predict you will live through all sorts of emotions the next 13 Episodes. Funny, moving, big surprises. And that´s an awesome way to start. The whole quarantine station idea. revisiting the world of the second episode from season one. It hat too much lore just to squeeze it in 45 minutes.
Even Cassandra had her own redemption arc. And it is so well written. Episodes like this make the series magical. And crazy ideas like... you will see very very soon. Doctor Whos writing staff are truly the most talented Sci-Fi authors the world has to offer.
Just wanted to add something that makes the ending even more awesome because there is something explained just between Cassandras Dialogue lines in her two Episode arc.
She basically became the skin on a Trampoline because of endless plastic surgeries. She mentions somewhere in between half sentences that she tried to become more beautiful because no one ever cared.
The doctor send she Back inside her dying servants Body to meet herself and Tell her Younger self honestly how beautiful she is...
We don't know for Sure... but judging her reaction... These words have left an impact she desired her whole Life for which now may Change her whole Life for the better.
The hospital is the Wales Millennium Centre - ie the one with letters on it from Boom Time.
...It DOES have a little shop!😂
Like Margaret, Cassandra got what she wanted in the end - someone to love her for who she was.❤
If you can show Kindness, be kind.
It has a little shop 🤣🤣 that's so funny!
I forgot that this far into the future they'd probably be advanced diseases and being treated with nanotech like the season one warship. So it's entirely believable that all the doctor had to do was dose them and get them to spread it.
Which is kind of sick when you think about it because that means the Flesh had been forbidden the very cures derived from their own suffering. The cats could have saved them at any time they wanted.
Bless you Juliette, you wear your emotions so openly; it's lovely to watch 💖
Thank you.... that means so much to me 💜

True 🤣🤣🤣
As Cassandra had no memories of the Doctor or Rose prior to meeting them at Platform One and her meeting them on New Earth was the first time she had seen them since then it doesn’t feel likely even with time travel the Doctor would ever encounter her again.

The ending of this episode destroys me every time. I'm a wreck.
Take note of some of the actors and actresses who appear in Doctor Who, theres a joke that Britain only has 12 actors and a couple of props as some appear in the show more than once as different characters.
I love David in this episode so much, he is a master at conveying his emotions with just a look or glance and when he gets fired up its really something to behold, its chilling when he confronts Novice Hane about the flesh and then Rose

Think rose feels more at ease or less naughty if she gets thing's wrong with the new doctor, seems like she feels more of a couple than student and teacher, and he knew straight after the kiss, she went to a screen and spoke and he glances at her with the "I know your not rose" look, watch again and see how he speaks to her haha class

Did you notice that 10 refers to himself as the "new new Doctor"? That's a bit meta, isn't it? 9 was the first Doctor after a _long_ hiatus of the series, making 9 the "new Doctor." 10 is breaking the 4th wall a bit, calling himself the "new new Doctor."
That's true! Very cute 😅
First adventure for the 9th Doc was the day the Earth died, meanwhile the 10th Doc's first is to take her to where Humans move to after that.
