Ford Focus Review - First Generation

- Here is a review of the first generation Ford Focus car, , showing what is good and bad about it. The first generation Ford Focus with the Zetec engine is a good little car. The resale value of a Ford Focus is very low, so you can always find a good deal on one of these great little cars.
1:48 Actually, M in IIHS test ratings stands for Marginal, and the headrest/seat ratings only apply to front seats, not front and rear seats.
I have an 02 Ford Focus LX with the 2.0 SPI Sohc and the Ib5 manual transmission I don't agree with your statement with "it goes about 80k miles and craps out" only because mine with the original motor has 246k miles on it. Only problem I had was alternator went out at 110k at 180k timing belt bit the dust and now at 246k the first wheel bearing went out in the right rear. I like the car always fixing it up since it's my daily driver. But once the rust starts don't even try fixing it. I don't have a tach but Ford did hide a tach in the car where your odometer is. It has a electric tachometer and speedometer if you search the video. And the car is very lenient on oils. I just redone the clutch but didn't have money for transmission fluid so I didn't refill it. It was bone dry and drove perfectly for 45 miles and then refilled it. I've drove it with no water for 400 miles. And I drove an entire week with only a little oil on the tip of the dipstick. I take this car off road trails with Jeeps an out perform them as long as you know where your important stuff is on the front, I took my car through mud bogs that 4wd trucks couldn't get through and drag race my car on the high way all the time it's great and easy to put a turbo on as long as it's low boost. I love the car

I have a 2003 focus wagon with the spi. Things I love about it:
1. Unbelievably spacious.
2. Great gas mileage, my wagon gets better gas milage than some 2 door hatches
3. Parts are cheap, SOOOOO many aftermarket parts if your into tuning. I already have crossdrill brakes and projector headlights, completely different soundsystem, i plan on lowering it soon. I'm into that sorta crap.
4. despite the fact its an spi, its actually very reliable.
Stuff I hate:
1. was it REALLY too much to ask for a tach...
2. freaking slow.
3. I dont know if hatches and sedans have this problem but with my wagon, if i want to fold the seats down, i have to move my front seats up, go back to the back seats, lift the bottom section up, then fold the top section down, then go back to the front put the seats futher back and i lose a good 2-3 inches of driving comfort at the front. not to mention i have to do the tour of that car around 4-5 times
+MTLbigJ I agree with you about the tach! That's probably one reason my engine blew up. And you're right about the gas mileage. It's amazing when you compare it to any other car with a 2 liter engine. I don't know how they did it. These old Ford Focus cars are the best deal in used cars. People are giving them away. I ended up selling mine for $800, and it took a month to find anyone willing to buy it.
+hoohoohoblin i will be honest a lot of the faults u mentioned in the video are 100% accurate. since my wagon was very low mileage i decided to invest in it slightly, I managed to find an SVT focus at my local scrapyard, i took out the seats, now the entire interior is leather with blue accents, the rear seats finally have headrests, which upgraded comfort for the rear passangers, not to mention safety, and i managed to remove the SVT instrument cluster as well, so my wagon now has a tach and indiglo guages, along with some other little trim here and there to give it some nicer accents. I also have projector headlights on the car and the response ive been getting from people is incredible. People can't believe its a 2003 because of all the modern stuff it now has. The main reason i wanted a tach was for another video u had uploaded, the one warning everyone about the awful valve seat issue with these cars. at least now that i have a tach i will know if the engine is acting abnormally and at least hopefully suspect an issue before it occurs. so basically this long comment is just to say thanks making these vids...they were very useful!

It was the metal piece you zoomed in on when looking at the shocks but mine was the front one that rusted away apparently its actually happened to a lot of people
I'm in California, so things don't get rusty out here. Thanks for commenting. People need to know these things. I would guess that used car buyers in cold wet climates always check under a used car before buying it.
ya for sure mine was passed on by a family member and was oil sprayed yearly. i guess that stuff isnt as good as it says it is

I had this exact car mine was green and what happened is that since i live in canada and the car is exposed to a lot of salt the entire axle and supporting frame beam in the front rotted out cause the axle and tire to break off when i was at a stop sign. i forget the exact name of the frame piece but for the part and installation was around 2200 which obviosuly is a little steep for this car so i had to scrap my baby
