Marques, I just wanted to thank you. I've purchased the 2012 server mini and used your guide with an 256gb OZC Vertex 4 and 16gb 1600mhz ram, and it's so SWEET!!! The system really flies! Thanks for your help.
I ended up maxing mine out recently as well lol. I did a raid stripe 0 with two ssd's + 16 gigs of ram and running Mojave OS! This mac mini is perfect and for a 2011 I can't complain!
It's nice to see unbiased individuals in the tech community. I took some time to watch the entire presses over again and if they don't refresh the Mac pros, I'll be hunting for a Mac mini. Thank you
@ 4:52 Marques quotes: "240 GB SSD $480 bucks" on March 1, 2012, 3 years later May 2015, a 240 GB SSD is selling around $120 (1/4 the price !) if this trend keeps going SSD might seriously replace HDD in common computer usage an about 3 more years....or less. Cool :)
Right-Brain Media hey do you know if a Samsung SSD will be compatible with this Mac Mini?, I still have mine and not planning to buy a new computer anytime soon. Thanks.
Thanks for answering. Not trolling or spamming you. I was actually asking a question to Marques. He used a program to measure his Hard drive read and write speed. I was trying to get the maker of that program. thanks, Mike
i took my 2012 mbp and put not one but two SSD's plus 16GB of ram. each ssd is being clocked at 450 read/write but since it is on raid 0 i tested it with that app he was using and got 850 read and write this thing boots up in 11 seconds no problem
I enjoyed your series, because I recently bought a mid-2011 Mac mini as an Apple-certified refurb for $539 (it's the i5 version). It has been upgraded to 16GB of RAM already. At some point, I'll add an SSD as a second internal drive using OWC's kit. I chose this Mac mini over a more recent model, because it has the discrete AMD Radeon graphics instead of the integrated Intel graphics. Interesting addition... Get a fast SDXC flash card that is at least 32GB. I found a sale on a Sony product for $20. Stick it in the slot on the back of the Mac mini. You can boot Mac OS X from it, and it's quite fast. Not as fast as an SSD, but faster than the stock internal hard drive.
Thanks, Marques! I have a Mac Mini 2016 and it's a great machine. I wanted to make some updates like hard-drive and may be memory, thanks to you I have a guide to what I should do! Thanks, agan.
Thanks for doing this series. It's great to get an objective opinion of Mac products. People are so quick to call someone an apple fan-boy just for using their products. With this series, people can see for themselves. I use both platforms on a daily basis. The mini is a beast on a budget. It still needs to come on over to quad core awesomeness though.
You can get even better reads and writes from your SSD if you change the Drive driver to intels "iastor". Made my Vertex 3 go from 240 to about 510 write and 550 read.
Marques you can also overclock (increasing the speed of) the RAM and CPU to get those rendering times down. It really makes a difference and it's very satisfying. Just be sure to read a guide on it before diving in if you decide to go for it.
Excellent series yet again, looking forward to more stuff like this. Actually, I'd love to see you do a beastly PC build. I remember when Jon Paula did one about a year or so ago and I absolutely loved it because he streamed it live. Anyway, keep the excellent videos coming.
I was wondering if you ever tested out a 2012 Mac Mini with comparable specifications as the 2011 one you tested here? Example the 2.6 GHz, i7 with similar memory ... of course the 2012 model has 4 USB 3.0 ports opposed to the USB2.0. I am trying to make a decision where $ could be a factor and make the difference in the decision.
+Juicebox South (VicVic) You seem to have something really sensitive to hide. You know they won't use your files against you? Google technically could read all your mails, do you think they do that? It's basically the same deal with Microsoft. They won't use your files to hurt you. They use them to optimise your Windows 10 experience.
if you have to worry about hackers then yes. dont use windows. also, dont use mac. use linux. otherwise, windows and mac are both equally useful for the average person. If you arent doing something that will garner such attention from hackers then you are fine on windows or mac. Neither is superior to the other in terms of security from hackers.
Hey Marques, another great video and it really turned out to be a monster machine! =) I am a PC user myself, and never even tested MAC. Have always been satisfied with my custom built PC's, but this video made me almost want to do the same thing as you with an Mac Mini, lol! :P Question: What made you go for a MAC instead of a PC? =) //Mike
What were the main factors influencing your decision to go with the mac-mini? Was it OS X or the tiny desk real-estate? Something else? I'm curious because it seems like that's a lot of money to spend vs building a mini-itx box which, granted, would've been bigger but much much cheaper and much more powerful processor to boot.
Hey Marques I've just seen your video and was wondering would you recommend a Mac mini like this for music production. I'm use to PC but, I'd change if this was a better setup. Just looking for a little help thanks.
Hi Marques, if you could tell, how noisy (fan noise on heavy cpu load) was the mac mini as compared to say your 2013 mac pro, or an imac if you have one? Thanks
so its the same as a mac pro 2008??... cause i was planning on getting a 2009/2010 mac pro...i have a 2010 macbook pro but it superslow compared to my mac pro 2008
Do you think you could have put RAM with a much higher MHz in? I read on one website that the max it can handle is 1600 MHz. Also, do you notice much increase in fan noise after upgrading? These are great videos, great editing, clear explanations. Well done. Also, this video is exactly what I have been planning on doing, it is nice to hear from someone who already did it
my question I can't find the 2.7 because mac doesn't seem it anymore but will it work on the 2.3 i7 core mac mini that mac sells on their site now for 799? Thanks
Great videos... Learned a lot. I a have question to you guys, as I have dilemma: what would you do with your thunderbolt port? I have two options. 1. Buy an adapter to get usb3 speed for a 4 Tb hard disk, or 2. Buy a dual link adapter to use an Apple Cinema Display 30"? Give me some advice here please, as I can't decide:)
Your Novabench score of 834 is a testament to using an SSD drive. My Mac mini Server, with its 2.0Ghz QUAD CORE i7 CPU, 8GB RAM and stock HDD, got a Novabench score of 819! I wonder how well the Server would the same SSD in it...?
Would you recommend a mac mini instead of a imac for a light user of computer for basic needs. I already have an external monitor and peripherals. I am aware that the performance is going to be slightly lower but is it notable, again for light use?
yeah it is because the ssd (depending if you get SATA II or SATA III) is extremely fast. it's worth getting a 60gb ssd for the OS and heavy applications. if you do that you'll get speedy boot time and speedy operation on heavy applications. You can get a large standard HDD for other things.
Has the drive held up? I've heard bad things about Sandy Bridge in SSDs which I noticed this drive was. I am currently trying to figure out what 128GB SSD to put in my next rig for the best price to performance ratio and I'd really like to know if OCZ made a good drive.
Could anyone confirm that Yosemite does not support trim on a ssd? I have a 2011 mac mini running yosemite and i was planning putting in a ssd but i've seeing online that only OWC claims to be the only company's ssd that don't need trim support. Recommendations of compatible ssd for my mac please.
is it worth spending $300 more for the 2012 model over the 2011 model? I think the 2012 model with the top of the line specifications may cost $800 or a bit more , whereas the 2011 model top of the line costs $500 or a little less, just have to deal with USB 2.0 ports.
Okay then... I knew to stick with either 2011 or 2012 models as I saw i7 processor... whereas the later, newer models with i5 though they do offer USB 3.0 ports. I am not that too technical with all the latest processor types, it was that the 2011 model was enough for my purposes of having something compact to serve as a music server (and better than trying to use Raspberry Pi -too much work to get software and things going on that) and economical. Add USB 3.0 ports if needed is easily done using the Thunderbolt port and Kanex TB to USB3.0 adapter hub.
Have you tried connecting your mac mini to your dell monitor with HDMI. For some reason i'm having trouble with my mac mini outputting 1080p to my monitor.
Can you try loading Second Life on the Mac Mini. I would really like to see how the upgraded Mac Mini handles 3D Graphics. You can find it by searching for second life viewer for Mac in your favorite search engine. Thanks
2012: PC users, don't freak out! Windows isn't going anywhere. 2021: Immensely powerful Mac Pro workstation with Pro Display XDR and entirely macOS workflow PS: love watching your videos!
Could you do a build or two using Am3+ and FM1 or FM2 Motherboards. im interested in seeing which one is better? i'm doing a first time build now and i'd like to know.
Any news when will apple refresh the minis? My pc officially died last month and I finally decided to get a Mac mini next but I don't know if I should buy one now or wait for the new one
i'm thinking of buying the cheapist mac mini the 2.3ghz model and upgrading the ram inside in the future. when upgrading is there a certain amount of gbs that the mac mini can handle?
Were can i get those tilted dell monitors, i am planning to get a normal one and then a tilted one to the side, so can i have the link for both of them? btw, I'm using the tilted one for spotify/things that are running that i dont want to touch right now, and main one for main task
Hey, I noticed about half positive reviews and half negative reviews for the Amazon page of the OCZ drive you posted...No need to go into too much details for a layman like me on the world of SSD Drives, but did you consider adding the OWC SSD to your shopping cart when you bought your RAM there?
hai buddy... how did u installed the ATI 66m graphics ... you didnt mention it in the previous videos ,,, PLZ LET ME KNOW... is it come with the pack ? but i didnt find any thing about it
do you experience any lag from the usb to dvi adapter for the third monitor? i've been thinking about using one but all ive heard is lag from those type of adapters.
It would fit. You can find tutorials on how to add second hard drives to one of those online, you could easily swap the hdd for ssd and then add a second ssd.
my order now mac mini i7 quad-core 2.6ghz turbo boost 3.6ghz 16gb ram 1600mhz 1 tb ssd samsung 840 evo and the graphic card intel hd 4000 is this good for world of warcraft if i want play with high setting and good enough for aother games ? i didnt try by my self because i not get it yet , on the way to me
My dad has a 2014 Mac mini he might give me soon(I have a Windows pc I kind of hate Windows), can you upgrade the processor, and what is the best external gpu enclosure for it? (Obviously using thunderbolt 2)
I tried an Intel 520 120 GB on a base Mac Mini and it takes half a circle spin to load os x. If in verbose boot you see "waiting for DSMOS" use the "sudo chown root:wheel /" and it should help quite a bit.
Hey Marques, need your advice on something...I am purely a windows guy, but planning to try out Mac...eyeing the Mac Mini...the dual core core i5 model...which I will use for editing photos mostly and usual net stuff...so what do you think? Is it a good idea? It will be my first Mac! And may be later on will tweak with SSD and all!!
bro will this mac mini work i just lost a pc desktop over thousand dollars man help www.bestbuy.com/site/apple-mac-mini-intel-core-i5-2-6ghz-8gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive-white/7812053.p?id=1218861115648&skuId=7812053 Apple - Mac mini - Intel Core i5 (2.6GHz) - 8GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive - White
I am looking into trying to replicate this setup, however, I live in Canada and amazon won't ship that OCZ drive here. Dunno why. I could probably look for it here, but I noticed Other World has OWC Mercury Extreme drives with the same specs. Are they as reliable? Could you recommend other brands as well? I'm new to re-fitting. Prices in general seem to have come down, on SSDs and RAM too. Thanks. Great mod, blazing fast speeds you're getting. Congratulations!
Lol you are the man, I love your video editing, especially the outro lol and you are really good at reviewing, I'm going to watch every video I can lol and I recently built my own pc as well very fast but it's windows 7 ;)
i know a bit about computers but im no expert. i do a fair bit of photoshop and CAD/rendering, would it be better to use the 2.0GH quad core mac mini server or the 2.5GH duel core mac mini?
Hey, I just had a question to ask you.. I plan on building a Hackintosh and I got a 128 gig SSD for the boot drive. I want to know whether it's possible to put a fresh install of Windows on the same drive after installing Mac OS X, not only that but use the SSD as a boot drive for both and the HDD as storage for both..? Long question, but I am inexperienced and need help, thanks in advance (if you answer that is..)!
Hey, I'm planning on buying the base line model of the mac mini, and getting the apple keyboard and magic mouse. Then, I'm going to just upgrade the RAM in it to 8 or 12gb. Do you think that would run fast?
Great series. Noticed that the RAM and SSD that you used have nearly halved in price. Also, what would you do with the RAM and HDD that you replace? Sell them?
I just recently upgraded my iMac 2011 with an SSD. It's insane. Crucial M4 opens every single app (and I have a LOT of fancy large apps) in about 10 seconds. My OS boots in about 15 seconds, and everything I do is instantaneous. It was already a top-specced iMac, but now it's even faster. :D Best computer I've ever used. I may upgrade from 12GB of RAM to 16GB soon, but I don't feel the need yet.
So I have a mid 2010 Mac mini should I get a new 2011 mac mini with the i7 like yours or just install a SSD in the one I already have? I was also looking at buying a iMac why did you go with the mini?
i was hoping to see you use all 3 monitors, because otherwise you could have just gone for the quad core i7 mac mini server. how are your temperatures like?
can u make a list of ingredients needed to make windows the fastest it can be? looking to build a gaming pc soon, and would like to know where to put my priorities in terms of spending money to get the most out of the performance of windows. much appreciated, thanks for all ur videos so far
He uses macs, so he wouldn't know for a windows machine. but the biggest thing you could do: use an SSD for your boot drive. other than that, it's a whole lot of whatever you want your computer to be able to do. but for a gaming machine: an i5 should be fine, spend ~$300 on the GPU, and work around that really. AMD GPUs are good for gaming builds, they tend to be cheaper but have the same power as nvidia cards, so unless you plan on using nvidia-specific software or anything, it's a good deal. this is only a rough guideline, you should spend months researching your choices

I ended up maxing mine out recently as well lol. I did a raid stripe 0 with two ssd's + 16 gigs of ram and running Mojave OS! This mac mini is perfect and for a 2011 I can't complain!
would be cool if u did a 2o15 update to this!
ye, cause 2o15 and not 2015
Mac mini need a skylake update first preferably with quad core i7 cpu
I have spent months studying Mac speed ups and discovered a fantastic website at Mels Speed Method (google it if you're interested)

They reached 90$ already
Hello from October, 2017. 250GB Samsung SSD's are now $100!
Right-Brain Media hey do you know if a Samsung SSD will be compatible with this Mac Mini?, I still have mine and not planning to buy a new computer anytime soon. Thanks.
6 and a half years later in October 2018, you can get a 240 GB SSD for less than $50. A little more than 10% of the price in 2012. Wow.
man you have come a long way im so proud!!! lol much love watching this in 2023
That microwave looks like the windows 8 logo.
Thanks for answering. Not trolling or spamming you. I was actually asking a question to Marques. He used a program to measure his
Hard drive read and write speed. I was trying to get the maker of that program.
thanks,
Mike

the only problem with SATA 3 is it only has a 6 gigabit connection wich means your only getting max around 800 mb a sec
Thank you. I love a good unbiased tech reviewer that knows his tech, and doesn't need to be a fanboy in products.
wtf did you overclock your microwave cause it's going crazy...
Frequency is different to cameras
Beefi twas a joke young son.

You have a solid career in broadcasting ahead of you if you don't already, good video, I have the i5 mac mini but nonetheless inspirational.

That still is pretty fast for 2014, barely two years later.

Anyone else notice the crazy microwave LED screen going nuts???
it has to do with the camera. the camera is making it that way.
Bad fps on that camera. Better filming in 60fps or more...
ThinkCleverAndSmart
That not the reason it's all flashy but close enough.
thats because the screen on the microwave is at 50 mhz and the camera is at 60 mhz

P.S. Your outros are the best!
i know you said it wasn't a mac mini review, but if you could do a review video on the mac mini that would be pretty sick. great videos man!!
As always you were excellent. The information you provided, Quality of your videos. And I like the series approach.
What sort of microphone are you using? is it the one placed on the left side of the monitor?
Please do more of these!!!!!
I absolutely loved this series and I can't wait for more!!!
Does the 2018 Mac mini playback 4k resolution video on a 4k monitor nice and smoothly?

love to see a new one for the 2014 mac mini.
Hi Marques, if you could tell, how noisy (fan noise on heavy cpu load) was the mac mini as compared to say your 2013 mac pro, or an imac if you have one? Thanks

Excelent video series, very informative and entertaining, any ideas about making an older mac mini g4 useful again ?
my question I can't find the 2.7 because mac doesn't seem it anymore but will it work on the 2.3 i7 core mac mini that mac sells on their site now for 799? Thanks

Were can i get those tilted dell monitors, i am planning to get a normal one and then a tilted one to the side, so can i have the link for both of them? btw, I'm using the tilted one for spotify/things that are running that i dont want to touch right now, and main one for main task
Hey, I noticed about half positive reviews and half negative reviews for the Amazon page of the OCZ drive you posted...No need to go into too much details for a layman like me on the world of SSD Drives, but did you consider adding the OWC SSD to your shopping cart when you bought your RAM there?
hai buddy... how did u installed the ATI 66m graphics ... you didnt mention it in the previous videos ,,, PLZ LET ME KNOW... is it come with the pack ? but i didnt find any thing about it
Only available in the 2011 models
Sadly
why do indians try to be so friendly by saying "hai buddy"…..im not insulting or anything…just want to know
***** why did you ask the same question two times?
do you experience any lag from the usb to dvi adapter for the third monitor? i've been thinking about using one but all ive heard is lag from those type of adapters.
It would fit. You can find tutorials on how to add second hard drives to one of those online, you could easily swap the hdd for ssd and then add a second ssd.
my order now mac mini i7 quad-core 2.6ghz turbo boost 3.6ghz
16gb ram 1600mhz
1 tb ssd samsung 840 evo
and the graphic card intel hd 4000
is this good for world of warcraft if i want play with high setting
and good enough for aother games ?
i didnt try by my self because i not get it yet , on the way to me
My dad has a 2014 Mac mini he might give me soon(I have a Windows pc I kind of hate Windows), can you upgrade the processor, and what is the best external gpu enclosure for it? (Obviously using thunderbolt 2)
okay.. im totally going to do this now .. but question can i hook it up to my tv and will it work with my wacom tablet..
Hey Marques will i be able use this configuration with a i5 processor?
Would I be able to use illustartor/photoshop on this system?
yes did you watch the video?
Yes you can use those on pretty much with any computer with at least 4gig of ram
And may be later on will tweak with SSD and all!!
thinking of buying a used 2.4 Ghz 2010 mac mini and doing the same thing. would it be worth it?
+anthony palmer idk how much it costs but my slightly upgraded imac 5k late 2051 gets a nova bench score of 1428!
bro will this mac mini work i just lost a pc desktop over thousand dollars man help www.bestbuy.com/site/apple-mac-mini-intel-core-i5-2-6ghz-8gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive-white/7812053.p?id=1218861115648&skuId=7812053 Apple - Mac mini - Intel Core i5 (2.6GHz) - 8GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive - White
What kind of amplifier or DAC is sitting on the desk? And how does it work with the M50's? I saw you used them
I am looking into trying to replicate this setup, however, I live in Canada and amazon won't ship that OCZ drive here.
MKBHD, is the lack of amicro sd slot on the galaxy nexus a big problem or do you think that the whole experience and specs will hide this drawback???
Lol you are the man, I love your video editing, especially the outro lol and you are really good at reviewing, I'm going to watch every video I can lol and I recently built my own pc as well very fast but it's windows 7 ;)
Will the mac mini upgraded like yours be good for recording and producing beats?
i know a bit about computers but im no expert. i do a fair bit of photoshop and CAD/rendering, would it be better to use the 2.0GH quad core mac mini server or the 2.5GH duel core mac mini?
I may upgrade from 12GB of RAM to 16GB soon, but I don't feel the need yet.
whats the outro song
So I have a mid 2010 Mac mini should I get a new 2011 mac mini with the i7 like yours or just install a SSD in the one I already have? I was also looking at buying a iMac why did you go with the mini?
what does ram usually get used up on..ive got an imac with 4GB and about 2ish GB gets used up during standard use. im just curious
i was hoping to see you use all 3 monitors, because otherwise you could have just gone for the quad core i7 mac mini server. how are your temperatures like?
Looking at purchasing the new Mac Mini. I would use it for mostly web surfing and Pages. Would you recommend this Mac?
can u make a list of ingredients needed to make windows the fastest it can be? looking to build a gaming pc soon, and would like to know where to put my priorities in terms of spending money to get the most out of the performance of windows. much appreciated, thanks for all ur videos so far
