Ken has told me that, when he's doing gun videos demoing a particular drill, and he's dropped a point, or gone over time, the videographers have said to him, "Do you want to do that again?" His response has been, "No, why would I?" Ken cranks out videos; no one gets as many videos done, in a short time frame, like he does. He never uses a script, he just starts talking to the camera. His comment has been, "If you don't know what you want to say, you probably shouldn't be saying it." And when he demos a drill, he does one rep and that's it. He never does a retake. Videographers have told him that's not how certain other people do it. They will stand there, running the same drill, over and over again, until they turn in a great time, with zero points down, then put that into the video as a demonstration of their skill level. Ken doesn't play that game. When he says, "Do it cold, your first rep is the only one that counts," he MEANS it. I think the fact he's not afraid to put out a video like this one, where he didn't actually make the standard he set, himself, says a lot positive about Ken Hackathorn.
That's one way of looking at it. Another way might be that, if this guy, who is a professional shooter and trainer, can't meet the standard cold, there's not much hope for us folks who carry a gun and have day jobs.

If this drill is a test of the level of competence we NEED to use that gun effectively, then the fact that a professional has difficulty meeting the standard on demand is telling. Especially for the majority of us who aren't going to carry a heavy brick of a 1911, even the Commander version, around all day.
How legit and legend is Ken for not doing a take 2 on this. He doesn't pass his own test and publishes it anyway. #Integrity. FWIW, the "half test" used to be "The Test" except half the time (10 rounds 5 seconds/push yourself up the standards etc) but looks like it will need a new name as the OG has spoken.

That drill accomplishes more when only two at a time are fired from the draw, in my opinion, and repeated several times. A series of "one" from the draw is also extremely beneficial.
Great test, I've always been a wheel gunner with 357mag or 45acp. Their are 100's of 9mm pistol's that I love, I just didn't like the round until recently. I watch Gun Sam revolver aficionado, and he test's every kind of round you can think of. In the past week or two he tested each time two caliber's and two different companies. First were the Underwood 9mm and .40cal and they were awesome. Then a couple of day's later he tested the same two round's from Winchester call the defender and they looked even better. Sam's test's have become somewhat scientific, everyone need's to watch him even Sleepy Joe. ( Lol ). My hand's have become more arthritic and I new one day I might have to start using 9mm. But before this year I didn't like any of the 9mm. I think those two 9mm round's have finished my quest.

For some reason, I have never been able to fire .40 S&W guns well; the recoil never bothered me, but I just couldn't shoot them accurately. I do like .45 ACP though since I tend to shoot pistols in that chambering a little more accurately than 9mm. I'm not sure if it's the round, recoil impulse, or the guns themselves.

Agreed, I think it's typical to add 0.5 sec or so to the goal time if drawing from concealment. In addition, cutting from 10 rds to 5 should add some time also.
This could be the best test ever to qualify a shooter When are you ever gonna get in a gun fight and when are you then ever gonna have two targets SAS would say; if 4 bullets doesn’t bring down your target, you brought the wrong gun to the fight With a test of 5 - even a cheap ass drum revolver in 22LR will bring down a target if you hit 45 points in 5 seconds cold
Now we need the Kyle Drill... 100m run away from attacker, turn fire 4 shots. Run 200m and get knocked down from a blow by a rock and get hit with skateboard a few times until you have a concussion. 1-2 shots each for 3 targets. Run to safety and get pepper sprayed. Must be as accurate and discriminate targets as well as Kyle. Maybe Pat Mac would do it.
You forgot to say using a gun you had no business carrying at a range you didn’t have permission to be at while flashing Proud Boys hand signals and playing GI Schmoe…that adds a whole level of complexity to the drill.
I’ve shot this drill a few times and what i found is that when i fail, it’s because I was shooting too quickly. 10 seconds is longer than you’d think it is. Just my experience.
Remember, for videos, the music is always the most important part, so raise the volume as much as you dare... Well, maybe not. Perhaps content actually matters.
Practicing two handed is a waste of time. Never have a seen a video of a shooting that ever involved two handed shooting unless it is a rifle. There is never time for that with a hand gun.

He’s not a spring chicken anymore. Do you really expect him to perform like he did in his peek years? That is unrealistic.
