When you talk about it being interesting she’s Canadian singing country don’t forget that what you would think of the American West (Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, etc) aka cowboy country also extends up into Alberta and the Canadian prairies. So country music has a big following in Canada.

The interesting thing is that up until the 1960s, there was a distinct difference between "country" and "western" music. Also, don't forget California as being an early hotbed of Western music-particularly in the southern San Joaquin Valley.

In 2003 she contracted Lyme disease and it drastically effected her voice. She not only incredibly talented and beautiful but obviously strong willed and driven. Even though she's one of the most successful artists in the history of music she's underrated.

Its was always funny watching some artists slam Shania for her singing, yet when they tried to sing a Shania song they couldn't do it especially live. Shania is a key ingredient as to why her song works, since she wrote them she brings her own emotions and sass to them when she performs them. I have been a Shania fan since 93 since I first heard her on radio. I got to meet her several times over the years. She puts on a great show. Besides meeting her in her hometown when she ran the Olympic Torch, my most memorable fan moment was at her first show for her first Vegas residency. The crowd was electric. When she landed on the motorcycle, she couldn't even start singing since we were all on our feet cheering the return of Shania Twain. She stopped to acknowledge the reaction and she wound up getting all choked up. It was a very cool fan artist moment.

Country music and even the cowboy lifestyle has always been in Canada too, especially Alberta. Lets go back 50-60 yrs and see Gordon Lightfoot and Anne Murray, both Canadians, all over country music. Canadian folk music was incredibly influential too.

Shania is a model in fighting back from real, severe vocal damage. I understand they weren't sure she would be able to sing again after the Lyme Disease, but she fought her way back and adapted to the new limitations on her voice. If you listen to the early version of this and most of her songs, you can hear the difference - still awesome, but different. She provides the perfect lesson on fighting back from adversity.

Memories of being in a dance club bar...just sitting at a table, enjoying my drinkswhile the dj played different tracks...then all of a sudden...those opening beats and "let's go girls" comes out of the speakers...and literally EVERY woman in the club rushes to the dance floor to shake their stuff, to celebrate being women, all of them singing at the top of their lungs along with Shania...it was THE ultimate feminine anthem of the late 90's-early 00's.

I was very interested to hear your review @bethroars, on Shania. I just watched a documentary just released by her and her 10-year hiatus from singing was because she contracted Lymes Disease, which totally affected her voice. Her speaking voice really shows the damage to her voice. This video
Clip was done after her return to singing when she took up a Vegas Residency after being coaxed back by Lionel Richie. If you get the chance, try to watch the doco. It’s very interesting. Thanks for your review of this wonderful woman.

Are you familiar with her vocal struggles? She contracted Lyme Disease way back in early 2000’s which severely affected her voice and she couldn’t sing for years. She had surgery on her chords and now her voice is MUCH deeper than it was when she originally recorded this. I’d imagine some of these old songs can be tough for her. :(

Shania truly puts on a show, but consider that she was married to "Mutt" Lange at the time, the power behind Bryan Adams, AC/DC, Foreigner, Lady Gaga, and so many others. I always found the Country? music coming out of Canada to before pure. I was deejaying at a Country station when "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" was released, and the phones went crazy. This was at a time when Garth, Reba, George Strait, Lorrie Morgan and many others were at their peak, so it wasn't easy for a new artist to break through, and stay. Always class act from very humble beginnings. Please sing more. Love your voice.

Canada has "country" artists. Listen to the amazing Canadian artist Lindi Ortega's Ashes. Canada also had a folk revival just like England, Scotland and ireland (see Steeleye Span, Fairport, Planxty), in the 60s and 70s. See Nfld's Figgy Duff (a Newfie delicacy) and a horde of Nova Scotia bands from the Halifax scene.

Figgy Duff's Retrospective is a good introduction to the band. Their version of three brothers from merrie Scotland, "Henry Martin" (th-cam.com/video/E09185HUvmI/w-d-xo.html) is one of my favourites. It was also used in the Canadian show Due South, which was partially funded by and appeared on the Beeb during its run. The soundtrack for that show contains a lot of great Canadian songs by Canadian artists including a fantastic acoustic version of Sarah Mclachlin's "Possession" in the episode titled Victoria's Secret. There was a great Figgy Duff Xmas fok special from the CBC that was once on TH-cam but now seems to have disappeared.
For a more traditional folk song from the Great Big Sea listen to "The Banks of Newfoundland (th-cam.com/video/tRadBJvAKdU/w-d-xo.html). Here is Great Big Seas's version of Captain Kid (th-cam.com/video/Hyhiqq-FzDU/w-d-xo.html) with some nice shots of the Island. This Great Big Sea song, "Oh Yeah", which shows their rockier side, served as the title song for wonderful CBC show Republic of Doyle (th-cam.com/video/ptFGEBh7Fmo/w-d-xo.html), a show that shows how impactful Ireland has been on the Island.
One of the most noted and famous of Canadian folkies with ties to NS was Stan Rogers. Rogers was born in Ont of NS parents. His Northwest Passage, about the Brirish explorer Franklin (something that may tell you something about English Canadian identity), is a classic (th-cam.com/video/xMRpYtAhGAo/w-d-xo.html). So are others of his songs such as one of my favourit4es Barrett's Prvateers (th-cam.com/video/mQbh7UNCZdc/w-d-xo.html), a song that namechecks Halifax and Sherbrooke. Sarah Maclachlan, of course, came out of the Halifax scene though she, some might say wisely, moved to Van. One folk thread in NS comes from Cape Breton which has both a pipes and a fiddle tradition. An excellent brief article on the Halifax scene can be found in the Canadian Encylopedia (www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/halifax-emc).
You can listen to Lindi Ortega's Ashes" here th-cam.com/video/AQMHgsk-Eug/w-d-xo.html. She returned to Canada after a sojourn in Nashville which apparently wasn't a very positive experience.
There is a lot of great Canadian rock and there are some differences between the rock in various provinces. Van was home to a significant punk and hard rock scene. The great Northern Pikes, who sometimes had a jangly rock sound, hailed from Saskatoon. The Guess Who were from Winnipeg and were introduced to the US thanks to one of the few female programmes in North America Rosalie Trombley of Windsor's monster CKLW. Montreal had the French bands the Box and Men Without Hats who sang in English to the consternation of some.
Fun video on some Newfie phrased from the creator, writer, and star of Republic of Doyle...th-cam.com/video/MHB32ll7Ce8/w-d-xo.html

But she sounds pretty good here, if not a little "careful" with her approach. She is amazing though (what a career!), and thankfully, she can still perform, even at a restricted level. Thank you for the enthusiastic video!

She finished her second residency in Vegas a few months back. She sounds this way yet, even though this is from the Still the One Vegas residency 2014.

I'll be surprised if you don't get copyright struck on this. Shania Twain and Garth Brooks' labels are two of most active copyright strikers in the music industry.

It's not that surprising, as country & western is quite popular in Canada as well. In fact, in Western Canada (Alberta, Saskatchewan, etc..), there's a lot of cowboys. Calgary Stampede anyone? We (Canada) had a western frontier too, it's not just the States. I mean Keith Urban, from Australia, is one of the biggest country stars around. Fact is, all threw New World countries you Brits colonized (US, Canada & Australia) had frontiers and cattle ranches and cowboys.

Loved your reaction, as always! Could you please also react to Brazilian singer Rita Lee? She's our rock icon, has a really particular style and personally, and her songwriting is out of this world. I'll leave some links to her performances, all with English subtitles if you maybe want to have a look :))

Asa song, this is a very good POP song. There is nothing country about this song, at least to me. She's a good singer but most of her songs would sound very good on pop radio.

Pretty sure its country pop. Country music has a lot of sub genres. Pop, blues and rock.
