New to mountain bikes. Matter of fact, has been over 20 years since I have been on one. So decided to visit local store, dropped 400 bucks on a starter bike and gonna get broke in. I am 51, ex-military , and ur vid spoke. I too was a beast in my day, could run 2 miles under 11 minutes, and drop some pain on folks when I got there. Parachute accident changed all that in just a few seconds. Now, overweight and soft, my mid life crisis has kicked in and I wanna go back to beast mode. So, gonna follow ur tip and focus on weight loss and endurance first. If the bike I bought can hang, who knows where it will go. But, all that to say, thanks, I am gonna watch the series and see what u have to say and try and change my life. Growing old sux, see if I can get back a little of my youth! Cheers!

Shower. Eat something healthy. Then sleep. Repeat this process for the next 2 months. I dropped 50 lbs doing this. Since then I sustained two injuries during COVID which sidelined me for the last 2 years. I gained it all back plus more. While technically you can't lose weight and put on muscle at the same time, there are instances where this is very possible. If you start doing heavy compound movements (Squat, Bench, Deadlift, OHP), you will make super noob gains for at least the first 6m - 1 yr, and lose weight at the same time. The thing is, you must be in a deficit to lose weight regardless. Your muscles will grow and get stronger during this first phase, and it's no different for Mt. Biking, you'll make noob gains in the muscle department. This story reflects me. I used to be 400lbs and started lifting heavy weights (powerlifting type program). I made sure I was in a deficit and I put on lots of strength and lost lots of weight. Now, 5 years later...I've hit a wall. I'm not fat again but I've definitely gained some weight back. I still lift heavy but hate cardio. Just picked up my first mountain bike and have been going out for at least 1hr/day after work and hitting some trails. I'm 4 days in, wow i have DOMS like ive never had. LOVE IT!
Great to hear! Think of DOMS as your muscles screaming for nutrients ("that's how you know its working...") Consider feeding them (and re-hydrate) with a BCAA mix, as well as simple proteins. Typically BCAAs are zero cal, although there is controversy there... Good Luck!
@@ahmadelshbasy3222 now I have lost 18kg since 16 May. Today I eat normal but still ride mu bike 3/4 times a week and 3h of trainning more or less. Darwin Rides well I’m glad I commented then lol. I actually had to do a double take at your subscriber count because the video quality (content and production) was so good. It doesn’t hurt that I’m biased in favor of the content I guess. Keep making the videos and be sure to put in a bunch of appropriate tags so people find your videos more often. But I’m sure you know that already.
I am a former Marine who now weighs 300 pounds. I really need to loose weight and biking used to be one of my favorite things to do. The diet part is where I struggle though. I understand what healthy food is but I find it hard to plan meals and portions so that I'm eating enough but not too much. Wish me luck.
Turning 41. Still strong, road all mountain bikes last summer, fall and early winter. Then lifted weights when cold. Been slowly getting back on the bike on warmer days. I'm 6'3" and weight about 275. I would love to lose my mid section and get rid if some flab. 225 to 235 would be awesome. My knees really need it. I want to keep challenging my son on mountain bikes and dirt bikes. If I don't lose the weight I know I will have slow down. 41 is too young for that!
I’m 25 now, 315lbs. Luckily I haven’t gotten any kind of chronic internal issues by being this level of chonk. But the back and knee pain is real, not to mention the terrible sleep. I’m a pretty broad and muscular man, so factoring this in I think I’d be really happy around 230lbs. I don’t really care about the number though, I just want the back and knee pain to subside and start to feel better. I’ve been looking for a used solid frame bike on marketplace and I think that’s what I’m going to buy next month for my birthday. I always loved biking when I was a kid. Cheers.
It's counter intuitive, but riding may not improve your core strength, by its self; many riders still complain of back pain. Your knees will love you though; my knees have never felt better. For core strength (to fight back pain) try adding planks to your daily routine. Quick, easy(ish), and highly effective. Good Luck!
@@darwinrides1688 I really appreciate the insight here. looking forward to getting back on the horse so to speak. I didn’t know planks did good for back pain too, very good tip. I’m sure everything in life will be easier when I don’t weigh as much as a Chevy small block. Safe riding to you sir. Thank you for making these videos.
Goal 175 lbs. & Bunny hop over 12 inches. Reward: buy my self a new mountain bike :) (I'm 63 and my bike is almost as old...) Progress: 14 lbs to go and about 11 inches higher to hop! I can hop about 1" Wahoo!
Good luck with the goals! The weight is the easy part. Bunny hopping...takes a while to get dialed in. There are a bunch of videos on YT that claim to have it all figured out. While most of those riders do great bunny hops, there are scarce few who can explain what they are 'actually' doing to get their bike off the ground. Step 1: Work on doing 'manuals'. Getting the front wheel up into a low 'manual' position sets the bike up as a lever that you use to launch yourself up into a bunny hop. Not too late to teach an old dog new tricks!
It’s 2020 and I definitely need to lose weight but I do need strength to, as I m ageing I have less strength now and being over weight is just not healthy , I guess bike riding can help me, I started short rides at the moment , so not used to a bike seat/ saddle, fruits and veg here I come. 👍
Ashtanga yoga in the morning to greet the sun then a mountain bike ride in the afternoon to say goodbye. Apparently sun gazing cures cancer so i added it to my fitness sessions, adds a whole spiritual perspective to the ride.
My goal is to lose weight. I played basketball in Europe/Mexico for 5 years. Stopped playing in 2004 I weighed 230 pounds now I weigh 356......... I want to get down to 250.......and I’m 6’9 so the weight is impacting my knees and back....... bought a mountain bike yesterday and I’m ready to roll💯
My knees suffered too. It took about 6 month before I stopped wearing compression sleeves; they provided some much needed support. 100 lbs is a noble goal. Check out Part 2 (if you haven't already). Lots of detail around nutrition that might accelerate your progress. Good Luck!
I am 6'1" also. I think my 'lean' weight might be closer to 190 lbs though. Shoot for 210, but don't be surprised when you blow right past it. (199 looks really good on the scale, and even better in the mirror.) Add in some narrow stance push-ups to your workouts and consider buying a (green) pull-up assist band. Lift before your bike rides (cario should always come last). Good Luck!
185 was always my (secret) goal too, but I never get there. I find that I'm either riding to lose weight or riding to build. So I tend to vacillate around the 190 to 210 mark. Good Luck!
That works! Losing weight is not always about getting lighter... That's how I typically recommend training for muscle gain and stamina. "You gotta eat!"
The simple solution is to forget about weight altogether and instead ride to reduce body fat, then you eat, ride, build muscle, lose fat all together.... right?
I would agree, however, using that philosophy typically results in weight gain. Weight gain in this case is a good thing, but in the absence of any other way to measure progress, it can be demoralizing. But, you are right!
@@darwinrides1688 for me, I have a body fat percentage readout on my scale. I assume it's not accurate but at least it's a consistent measurement, and getting that number to go down is my goal, regardless of the overall weight.
I love old guys that look hot. Thx for the video. Time for me to change my program from a street bike to a mountain bike as I’m growing older. Do you recommend a particular brand for a mountain bike? Thx
Flattery will get you everywhere... Most MTB bikes will get you to the same place (eventually). The name brand is not important. I recommend you visit a local bike store and find a 'hot looking old guy' who will help you maintain and upgrade it. Good luck!
I would be lying if I tried to dismiss your fears. It's a question of 'when' rather than 'if' you'll every be thankful that you wore a helmet. I still tend to fall once in a while; we all do. Unless your face is perfect (mine isn't) I wouldn't worry about it too much. I do recommend that you protect your elbows (initially), and your knees. Wear a helmet (please). If you watched the next video in this series, you might have noticed that I'm wearing a different helmet. There is a reason for that... and it wasn't by choice. Good Luck!
Ride an easier trail. That’s what I do. My goal is to get out into nature, enjoy my ride, push myself, increase my endurance and not get seriously injured. I don’t ride black diamonds or anything crazy. Most trails have a skill level - I do beginner and intermediate. No one is grading me on it - I’m just having fun.
Not at all. In fact, one of the techniques I suggest in part 3 of this series is selecting a single gear (once in a while). Single gear riders tend to stress a much wider array of muscles (depending on the types of trails you ride). Good Luck!
Spoiler alert... If you consume fewer calories than you use (daily), you WILL lose weight. It's indisputable, and it really is that simple. However, your body might just hate you for it, and it will try to sabotage your efforts (constantly). So, as you say, paying attention to what you eat, and when you eat it might help you control how much of it you end up eating. However you choose to get there is a very personal choice, but if you manage to move more that you eat, you WILL lose weight. Ultimately, there is no other way. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
If you're asking how many kilometres you need to ride to lose weight, the answer is zero. All you really need to do is reduce calories. Not so easy though, right? You can accelerate your progress by riding. Ride as many kms as you can fit into your schedule, but make sure you are fully recovered before you go again. Ride too hard or too often and you risk injury. Move more - eat less. Good luck!
It can be done! I know...I've seen me do it. I hope you see you do it too. It takes time, and your progress will likely not be linear. Some days you loose weight, other days you don't. You might even go weeks on a plateau (very frustrating), but stick with it. Good Luck!
I agree with the 'weight first' concept. 'Core' strength is hard to do on a bike, so it's often overlooked. It's counter intuitive perhaps, but our 'cores' don't get used as much as our legs (or our upper body on MTB trails), yet our core is the platform on which everything else is built. Planks and pushups are a great supplement to our riding. Good luck with whatever goals you choose 'Old Guy'!
@@darwinrides1688 Thanks Darwin! Yep, core strength will have to come from something else ... So I'm down 20+ lbs since my original post here so that's awesome. Just dealt with my very first gout flare up ... ugh!!! That really sucked. Now I'm working out a shoulder impingement issue (from disc golfing too much) ... making good progress with the shoulder via tension band, free weight exercises & stretching ... which is helping my core strength goal... sadly, no disc golfing for me for some time. :( Cheers!
No need to eat all that animal fat to lose weight. You'll get more fiber and better protein by replacing animal fat with protein from beans, rice and grains like oat meal. You get more protein per per calorie that way and zero cholesterol.
@@darwinrides1688 I don't think you understand exactly. Not just fatter but gaining nearly 2 pounds a day. I've put on so much weight I can't see my pecker and had to switch to proper downhill rims so I can still Ebike.
Brian, the ‘E’ in EBike could stand for ‘Estrogen’ in your case. The good news is that your pain tolerance might increase, and you can start hitting from the red tees. Good Luck!

Good Luck!
I bought the bike. Picking it up tomorrow. 6'1" 255lb sloppy. Goal is 210lb lean. Doing pull ups would be nice too
I am 6'1" also. I think my 'lean' weight might be closer to 190 lbs though. Shoot for 210, but don't be surprised when you blow right past it. (199 looks really good on the scale, and even better in the mirror.)
Add in some narrow stance push-ups to your workouts and consider buying a (green) pull-up assist band. Lift before your bike rides (cario should always come last). Good Luck!
Nicely put. Goal is 185lbs
185 was always my (secret) goal too, but I never get there. I find that I'm either riding to lose weight or riding to build. So I tend to vacillate around the 190 to 210 mark. Good Luck!
@@darwinrides1688 thanks!
Interesting vid Mate. 👍
Awesome job on this video!
I cut soda out of my diet long time ago(probably a few years ago; I am 20 now)
How did you go cold turky because i just cant
Lol we need a prequel video from your freight train days
Enjoyed the video mate 👍🏻
Cheers!
I got slimmer but kept the same weight. Cuz I keep eating before bike ride for energy. It's yummy.
Awesome music! Where did you find it, may I ask?
I love old guys that look hot. Thx for the video. Time for me to change my program from a street bike to a mountain bike as I’m growing older. Do you recommend a particular brand for a mountain bike? Thx
Flattery will get you everywhere... Most MTB bikes will get you to the same place (eventually). The name brand is not important. I recommend you visit a local bike store and find a 'hot looking old guy' who will help you maintain and upgrade it. Good luck!
I like the idea of mountain biking but not the real possibility of falling on my ass and/or face and winding up injured.
Great video, btw which place is this?,your hometown, I am guessing?
South FL, USA. (Everglades)
I have Raleigh mtb single gear. For weight loss is multiple gear is important?
Not at all. In fact, one of the techniques I suggest in part 3 of this series is selecting a single gear (once in a while). Single gear riders tend to stress a much wider array of muscles (depending on the types of trails you ride). Good Luck!
loosing weight is not just "move more eat less"; it is what you eat and how often you eat.
How many kms is enough to lose weight ?
If you're asking how many kilometres you need to ride to lose weight, the answer is zero. All you really need to do is reduce calories. Not so easy though, right? You can accelerate your progress by riding. Ride as many kms as you can fit into your schedule, but make sure you are fully recovered before you go again. Ride too hard or too often and you risk injury. Move more - eat less. Good luck!
I want to get in better shape and loose 50-60 lbs
It can be done! I know...I've seen me do it. I hope you see you do it too. It takes time, and your progress will likely not be linear. Some days you loose weight, other days you don't. You might even go weeks on a plateau (very frustrating), but stick with it. Good Luck!
One last glass Mtn Dew.
Lose weight first then improve core strength some ...
:( Cheers!
Great 👍 video awesome just subscribe ya
No need to eat all that animal fat to lose weight. You'll get more fiber and better protein by replacing animal fat with protein from beans, rice and grains like oat meal. You get more protein per per calorie that way and zero cholesterol.
I don't get it. I bought an EMountain bike and pass people all day long but I'm actually getting fatter...
'E' Bikes will do that to you...
@@darwinrides1688 I don't think you understand exactly. Not just fatter but gaining nearly 2 pounds a day. I'm wondering if some ambient electricity from the huge battery being so close to my balls has triggered thyroid issue.
Good Luck!
@@darwinrides1688 But I have already sunk over $9000 into it and it's not working. Are "red tees" an after market power boost? I replaced my seat with a dildo like the other EMTBers but it's not working, it hurts even more.I looked everywhere on my Ebike but it doesn't say Estrogen anywhere on it. Did I get the wrong EBike. I have the HIV Turbosuck 2 29er by Megadouche from Fakebike.com. What Ebike would you recommend for someone who just wants to pay to look like a real cyclist but is a failure at life? Cheers. Thanks for the help!
