      Hey Josh, another great vid. I recently left a comment about the Prometheus Design Werx Cloud puffer and wanted to follow up. Since it's been so cold I've been wearing it pretty much daily, after hearing about the two in your video I think the Pdw is kind of a hybrid between both.
      Personally I think it looks nicer than the Nova as it has a sort of mildly reflective matte finish. But also larger down pockets so it's less busy looking to me. They're both a 20D nylon with 4oz of 850dwr coated down. Though the Pdw is a stretch nylon and the outside is also dwr coated. (I'm not sure if that's the same for the Nova). It also has the lined pockets, double zipper and breast pocket. Like your heavier puff but still is compact.
      I usually wear the Pdw under an Eddie Bauer "Sandstone" shell rain jacket. Just because I'm always a bit paranoid I'll snag or cut the nylon at work or something. As well as it gives me an extra layer to keep the wind and more importantly rain off of me. I have worn the Pdw in rain but since it's lighter I definitely opt for a shell layer.
      I did recently wear it at 12°f with a flannel and T shirt without issue. I had to break up some ice outside in 12°f and I think that's where this one shines. It's so light and flexible to wear, with or without a shell. Especially compared to my usual chore costs. Hopefully this helps, and enjoy your camping!
      I'm not sure about my next trip to PDX, but I drive through fairly often and I'd be happy to bring some of my pocket knives or jackets if you ever want to check out some more gear without having to buy everything everyone talks about.

      Great to hear the more direct comparisons, definitely haven’t forgotten about it since your mention of it the other week! Keeping it in mind for next winter season for sure.
      Thank you for the offer to check things out if you’re passing by! Might be a bit tough logistically to create a video for anything but I really appreciate it, send me an email anytime (jshfenn@gmail.com) if you’re passing through and maybe we can get something set up

      Sounds insane! Portland winters are usually pretty mild but we usually get a few severe ice storms every year. Between the lack of winter infrastructure and hilly roads the city basically shuts down haha.
      Far different from living in Michigan like I used to, buffalo makes it all look mild by comparison I’m sure

    Being from New England I feel obligated to wear LL Bean. I layer mostly and don't really wear heavy-weight outwear. So mostly a hoodie and the LL Bean Utility jacket in the colder weather. It works great in the fall and spring with just a t-shirt. I also have an LL Bean Mountain classic windproof fleece jacket for windier days and it's shocking how wind-proof the fleece is. I'd highly recommend it. For most other days their primaloft shirt-jac is my go to everyday jacket.

    This is unrelated to the discussion on outerwear, but I'm interested in the red flannel shirt you're wearing. I love the look of the UBR Regulator Parka Savile. It's amazing what they are able to do with wool these days. We've come along way from the rough, itchy stuff that required special care when laundering.

    • @joshfenn
      @joshfenn  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Totally agree with the wool, it’s wild how nice an luxurious things have gotten, even as simple as some of the wool tshirts still blow me away.

    Hope with all those jackets you've found one to keep you warm & dry in these icy Oregon conditions we've had this past week. Stay safe. It has been ICY out there. I have the Filson Mackinaw Wool Jac-Shirt and LOVE IT. Keeps me warm with the right layers underneath. Although I have to admit that Flint & Tinder Waxed Shirt Jacket is tempting me. LOL

      The ice has been pretty wild! Luckily I didn’t have to go out much but we had a bit of an emergency situation with our cat and had to venture out a couple of times. Nice and warm though, I’ve never had so many warm layers in my entire life haha.
      I’ve got the cruiser but never tried the Jac shirt! Looks really great though, nice to know you’ve been happy with it. That F&T shirt jacket is awesome though, would definitely recommend if you’re ever in the market for something new

    Great round up of jackets! I know this was long because of number of jackets but I didn’t think you spent too much time on any single one and found it a helpful video! If you’re interested in a deck jacket, the Dehen 1920 one looks incredible. They also have waxed canvas and I think IH may only have non waxed cotton. Definitely on my grail list but haven’t been able to save up for it yet.

    Amazing jackets. Love the Kato wool style. Classic! No wool pea coat though? Or any Patagonia jackets? The Outdoor Vitals coat is bursting with style, subjectively sporty but very modern imho.

      @joshfenn  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually had planned to get Kato’s melton wool pea coat but they didn’t have my size! Love this style though. Have you heard of oros? It’s a different style than some of these but I have their rain jacket and I don’t see a lot about them. I’ve enjoyed their rain jacket so far. I’d love to see someone review them. I just don’t think I live in a cold enough area to say if their whole schtick with “solar core” is legit. Just bought that waxed shirt jacket - the quality is unreal - unfortunately neither the large or XL fit me (couldnt move the arms forward at all in the large, and barely in the XL) - but man it was nice, I would have lived in that thing if it fit. If you're debating what to get, go buy that one - if it fits you'll absolutely love it haha.

      @@joshfenn Well first of all thanks for the response I didn’t think I would get one. Yes, I am in NY but couldn’t find anything of good quality at NRack. Right now, my options could be Michael Kors (Macy), or maybe North Face, or Bloomingdales. I see a lot of people wearing these Uniqlo style minimalist jackets/parkas with zip enclosures and other matte-black elegant finishes, some of them are CGoose/UBR, but some are like these unknown brands (no visible branding). Coldest temp has been -1 and consistent teens in the day and singles at night. I've been layering because I live in the South. I don't own a single heavy weight jacket. I've been doing long sleeve t-shirts as a base layer, Iron Heart UHF or Pendleton wool flannel as a mid, and Carhartt Active Jac as my jacket. It's been fine with that. The flannel and canvas stop the wind.

    • @joshfenn
      @joshfenn  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Layering is definitely ideal in more mild climates, the parkas I talked about in the video are awesome but definitely overkill for the majority of our winters here in the PNW.
      Side note, how do you like the iron heart UHF? Been really wanting to pick one up, I’m a sucker for a good heavyweight flannel and I’ve heard nothing but great things about the brand.
