people need to be buying good quality boots and and trousers that will last something like heavy duty work wear because when business's go bust and no ones working, then your not going to be able to get those items if you don't look after your feet your not going anywhere . wool jumpers, good quality boots and heavy duty work trousers should last years if looked after. you may be need to think about having a hand crank sewing machine to repair cloths for the new make-do and mend new world abnormal ?

Just one sewing machine...LOL Well, I think I have at least five sewing machines and one is a treadle. The others can be hooked up to solar power. For many years I have bought scraps of material from thrift stores. I even have bolts of heavy duty materials used for upholstery. So, for just a very few dollars I can make or repair many items, I also bought sewing sundries and more thread. I have my mother's sewing chest which saw her through WWII and the rest of her life. I bought extra sewing scissors and a kit of dog grooming scissors, because I will not pay $50.00 for someone to groom my pets, especially when I can do it myself. And, the good thing about being a 'clothes horse' is that I can 'shop' in my bedroom for shoes or clothes, even hiking boots. I am so glad I made it a point to gather what I considered necessary, for when I retired and did not have any money except a tiny pension. Over the last fifty years, I have rarely spent more than $5.00 - $7.00 for an almost new pair of shoes, and even repair my own, but if you have many pairs repairing is not needed very often. I buy classic styles that never go out of fashion. Good quality is all that matters to me. Worn shoes also get recycled as gardening shoes before finally being tossed. By shopping thrift stores I have quality clothes and shoes I could not otherwise have afforded. My favourite item is a mid-calf lenghth cashmere coat which is warm and stunning, and hopefully safe from the moths in its plastic bag. Making do and mending was how people survived two World Wars in the UK and other countries; it is only a new idea to those who have never learned to live that way. Those who shout being minimalistic will be in for a few surprises when they find they are unable to find items they wish they had, even if they have the money to buy them!

It amazes me how we had this little preview of what it will be like when the stores start running out a few months ago, and now people are like "See! Things always bounce right back!" This is the calm before the real storm and yet people refuse to prep (b/c they're in denial and don't want to face the possibility of things getting bad).

This is what my Dad would call a time of “Survival of the Fittest” where we see who’s really a tough guy/woman. Make sure you know how to grow/ hunt your own food, sterilize your own water, protect yourself without a gun and most importantly he would say make sure you mentally prepare yourself for what’s to come.
I’m glad Daddy taught me how to survive a few days on my own in the woods. I used to hate when he took me hunting with him. Now that I’m older I realize what he was doing. Life saving lessons I’ve carried with me all my life.

That is where your beans come in like black, chick, lentils and great northern. Buy them why you can because you need to keep moving if you know what I mean.

If you have any ethnic stores, see if you can get some Ghee. It's canned clarified butter, unopened has a shelf life of ten years. Even opened, it can last up to one year if refrigerated, but you'll use it long before then! You get all the goodness of butter, the fat calories and the nice taste. You can make your own Ghee but it won't have such a long shelf life. Google it for the info. Also you can mail order it from places like Amazon.

I was at a few grocery stores - Walmart, Safeway, and Costco - and noticed that the veg and canned fruit went from being half an aisle or more, to being a very small section of limited options.. and typically not more than 8 - 12 cans per type with nothing 'behind' the fronted product, so once you take the few cans the shelf is empty again.

I shop at my local Grocery Outlet store where prices are at least half of the prices at regular grocery stores. Often, the prices are 75% less, and their WOW deals are even greater savings. Even on my small Social Security income, plus a very tiny pension, I have been able to buy sufficient, food, and supplies to last at least three or four years, enough for my daughter and family and myself and pets. I have supplies to make detergents and soaps and some toiletries. Enough medicine to last at least one year, maybe more. I have fuel to run my generators as well as solar panels to charge my power pack. Sewing machines and sundries, as well as hand and garden tools and seeds, round out my basic needs. I have a small garden for veggies and buy veggies and fruits from a market stall. I buy what is in season and dry what is on sale to add to my stores.
Generators were bought as factory refurbished, but are actually new, never had oil or petrol in them, The cost covered s&h as well as tax and a one year warranty. I bought a Berkey water purifier from their scratch and dent dept. I never shop regular grocery stores, I am not there to admire the decor when I buy food, I am there to buy the best quality items for the best prices. I do not sit down and add up how many calories are in each item, I have such an extensive pantry, there will be many choices for years to come without running out. Be creative, money saved on groceries can pay for other useful survival items. Buy used if possible. Stock up on toys for Christmas and Birthday's. I have shopped at thrift stores for years, I buy items that sometimes need a dab of paint or minor repair. A child's tricycle was bought for $6, a four wheeler for $12.00 the cost new would have been $72.00. I made a set of bedding to line a dolly's wooden cradle, which cost me $10.00 including the cost of the cradle, similar sell new for $125.00. I have bought children's books at 10 for $1. If I can do it, anyone can. I think ahead and buy things when I see them instead of paying full price upon a whim. Being frugal is the key to so many aspects of life, and enables me to find solutions to enjoy life's basic requirements as well as luxuries.
Even personal protection came from a pawn-broker, money saved went to pay for safety lessons. I repair everything, and waste nothing. TP seems to be a 'hot item'. Buy a bidet or make a DIY one from a dish liquid's plastic bottle, leave a little soap in the bottom and fill with warm water. TP can be found for half the cost of Costco's brand at the Grocery Outlet, which sells Organic, as well as items for diabetics, vegetarians, and vegans. The only down-side, is you have to buy what you want when you see it, as they are not consistant in what they sell. I look for the bargains, and buy by the case if the items are things I know I will used.Consider blackberrying, or foraging for wild mushrooms, gathering firewood. Using cloths or sponges instead of paper products. There are so many ways to save money! And, knowing I have provided for my family, self and pets, means I can now relax and just add extras to what I already have. There are propane and butane stoves in the garage, and an RV packed for bugging out in the driveway. Big bottles of water are also at the ready. Extra oil, oil filters and petrol, along with spare wipers for my car. When I think of things I write them down, candles, lamp oil and wicks are the last two items on my list. And, don't forget to learn more skills that will come in handy be that taking a CPR class, or learning how to be a mechanic. Never a dull moment!

I have been prepping for almost two years. I have always been pretty serious about it and have made sacrifices to get what i need. However, this year my wife and I went into overdrive with prepping. We have lived off her income alone, and as for my income, it has been spent solely on preps. We are pretty much finished with our INCH bags, clothing, medical, and AR set ups. I'd say we have 8 or 9 months of food and ways to cook and filter water. Are we where we want to be? No, but pretty damn close, and as long as we can prep, we're going to. Hopefully everything will hold together long enough to finish most of our preps. I'd like to be in a position where all i need to acquire is ammo and food. You can't have too much of either. I hope we all can get to a place in our preps where we feel confident and secure. Thanks Snake, i appreciate you brother.

@@SurvivalTheory May I suggest that additionally/instead you look for seeds that are being used in your local area (for example ask neighbors or look around) so you know what grows in your area? But be aware that if everyone has the same variety of plant (e.g. potato, corn, strawberry etc.) the chance of a disease spreading like wildfire and killing your plants (and the plants in your area) significantly increases. Plus try before you buy. If you can, buy some seed vault seeds and try how well they germinate and how strong the sprouts are. And if you like em, try buying the same batch.

By the way rubbing alcohol is getting hard to find, I have a connection, a little bodega I go into and ask, the lady calls up someone else and asks if it's OK to sell me a couple bottles, imagine paying $9 for a quart of 91% rubbing alcohol! It might not sound appetizing or appealing but I recommend tilling a garden and planting as many potatoes as you can. 1 potato plant can yield anywhere from 5-10 potatoes. To replant the potato plant just cut 1 potato in half and place it in the ground. Plant them in the early spring and harvest 10 weeks later. Potatoes are a generous crop and can grow in harsh conditions. They can even survive light snow fall. And of all the foods in the world you can’t necessarily live off of 1 single food source, however potatoes are perhaps the best singular food you can live off of. Eat at least 5 a day and you’ll have all your amino acids which are the building blocks for proteins. Your body needs them to function and without them you will die. Potatoes will prevent your body from starving. And it’s backed up by history. The Irish lived off of a diet consisting almost entirely of potatoes for 6 years during the potato famine of 1845. So while not necessarily pleasant, potatoes will in fact prevent you from dying and will keep your body functioning. It’s one of the only food sources on the planet capable of doing this. I know that’s probably a lot to read but hopefully this knowledge helps anyone who’s willing to listen.

    • @Rpg39_
      @Rpg39_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I also want to add that you can do this to help stretch your stockpile of other foods as well. You can eat potatoes during the summer and fall when they are ready and this will help lighten the load off of consuming your other canned goods. Growing potatoes can turn a 3 year supply of canned food into a 5 year supply just by limiting the amount of canned food consumed during those months.

I bought my pumpkin for Thanksgiving in February. Haven't seen it since.

OMG, I. was looking for the organic canned pumpkin to make pumpkin bread/add to my storage and it was really hard to find--- when I did find it there were only 4 cans on the shelf, snapped them up of course. This was today.

@@sher-at-home I just found a few cans of pumpkin the other day. Bought 2. Left 2, I think. There wasn't any other filling of any kind. No apple, peach or cherry. Cherries are $11 a lb, but they are available. Guess I'd better get some into the freezer.

Dusty, It gets frustrating trying to pull it all together. I'm working on adding to my pantry & better storage. Once I get an idea, its difficult to gather items as things sell out quick.

Problem with bugging out is where do you go? They seem to have all the areas mapped out as they have been doing it for years with google earth.

What you bought was hardly enough to make it worth a trip to the store. One needs to buy by the case, not one or two items here and there. I will not put myself at risk for so few items. If those of us who live on small incomes can afford to do it, anyone can. I agree with those who are saying folk who choose not to prep intend to live off the rest of us. It will just be a matter of time, before Food Banks run out, because there are so many people in need, it is foolish to depend upon the Government to come to the rescue. It is vital to be resilient. Take inventory, organize, and buy more as funds allow. Have a garden, buy seeds for next year. Learn how to store items to extend shelf life. Learn how to sew, do carpentry, have nails, screws, hinges and wood on hand before the stores are empty, buy tarps and other outdoor equipment, have propane and butane along with cooking stoves and as much water as you can store. And, don't forget to provide for pets and a way to keep them safe. Have a plan for them if you need to evacuate. Organize bags of essential survival items and documents, ready to grab and go. Cut and stack wood for when the grid goes down. Be realistic, survival and the ability to thrive depends upon a lot more than a wish and a prayer, one must be practical, methodical and focused, anything less will result in a 'sticky ending! The total denial of many folk is truly shocking, they are living in a dream world, and need to wake up now, rather than later.

Don't worry about yeast...buy self-rising white flour and all you need to do to make bread is add oil and water (although powdered milk instead of water is better).

What will you do with the Macaroni? You need spaghetti sauce, cheese sauce, or whatever you like. If you buy plain macaroni, you can get canned cheese to go with it. Then, tuna, viena sausages, real sausage, canned ham, canned shrimp, canned beef, all kinds of things. Got to add something to the macaroni and rice. For the rice, check out the Chinese canned and dry goods, lots of mixed veggies, chicken, and things.

I agree with you about buying from china. I do not want to support them but I need the gear. One of the things I got was a take down bow and some arrows. I also got fishing gear and magnet fishing gear from china, ferrorods, stoves and electronic sensors for home security. Things I need.

Dollar Tree has everything you need to begin your prep on a small budget. Once you establish a small prep then start stocking up on cans at Wal-Mart. They move up to bulk.

Have to agree vegis are getting scarcer. Was at Costco the other day and they had NO normal sized cans of corn or green beans and only expensive 8 packs of baby peas. Did see some #10 cans of corn though. Get it while you can because with the can shortage I expect to see them get scarcer.
