    Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
    With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

      Aren't there certain requirements that make it highly likely that refineries use a certain percentage of ethanol in the making of regular grade gas? If so, although its not a direct payment to growers its a method where gov't very strongly encourages corn to be used it that way. Corn instead of other plants?

    Every bushel of corn that Zach brings to the ethanol plant according to his states average *since I don't know what plant exactly he goes to or if they even publicly report their conversion rations.*
    A bushel is roughly 56 poounds. Going off the math
    19 pounds (2.7) of that weight turns into ethanol
    18 pounds into distiller grains/high protein animal feed
    18 turns to high grade carbon dioxide which in most places in the United States becomes food grade carbon dioxide for making sodas and beers.
    and roughly 1 pound of waste/chaff/carbon dioxide and other waste gasses.
    Thanks for coming to my informative Ted talk.

    First, I really appreciated the insight into your financial operations. I don’t know why, but I find farm finances to be tremendously interesting.
    Ethanol is mandated by the Federal Government. While a mandate may not be a direct subsidy, it is certainly not the free market. I agree that the Oil and Gas industry should not be subsidized (and I am in the Oil and Gas industry), but Ethanol is not what the free market would choose even with fuel blending mandates.

      Used to be you grew it, now can you sell it? That kind of kept things in check. Now its out of control hence mandates. End user gets stuck being the real subsidizer and can't do a thing about it. At least the videos are entertaining.

    Tell us about how it takes 3 gallons of water and 1 gallon of fuel for every gallon of ethanol produced so this makes sense how.

    • @kodez79
      @kodez79 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some of that energy comes from renewables. More and more. Also, the water mentioned is does not disappear. It is condensed and returned to the circle. Water is reusable, and this stays pretty clean. Some diesel is used growing and transporting the crops. A better option would be spending that money on wind and solar, but hey, we should try more than one path, and quick wins are quick.

      @Ax Man Yes but most of our imports come from Canada, Mexico, and South Americal. The Saudis are only about 11%. The amount of fuel consumed by the tankers as a percentage of fuel they carry is very tiny (ships are incredibly efficient compared to trains and or trucks. Hard to get the data but probably much much less than 1% of fuel hauled is consummed and that is for 10% of our energy. Probably takes more fuel to produce/haul corn for ethanol production. So not a very good argument to justify ethanol tax breaks. Just sayin

    • @willernst8376
      @willernst8376 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is not true, it is not a gallon for gallon trade for ethanol as that would put those companies out of business. Ethanol is always cheaper than gas in price so how could you make money if you pay more for the fuel than you can sell it for? Also the plants that made the fuel suck carbon out of the air, in that way ethanol is carbon neutral as it does not put any carbon into the atmosphere that it did not get from the plants to begin with. And since ethanol has no subsidies, they simply could not use one gallon of fuel per gallon of ethanol. Price of ethanol 1.17..... price of diesel 2.43. Think about it they would lose 1.20$ every gallon they sold

      @Ax Man
      Here is a copy of the information on ethanol subsidies taken from www.thoughtco.com/understanding-the-ethanol-subsidy-
      "Trump took office in January 2017, all seemed well with the ethanol subsidy until early October, when his own EPA administrator Scott Pruitt announced that the agency was considering lowering the EPA-mandated subsidy payment level for ethanol “slightly” in 2018. The suggestion sent shockwaves through the Corn Belt and its Republican congressional protectors. Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley accused Trump of a “bait and switch,” in reference to his empathic campaign promise. Grassley and Iowa’s other Republican senator, Joni Ernst, threatened to block all of Trump’s future EPA appointments. The governors of most Corn Belt states joined in sending Trump warning him than any cutback in the Renewable Fuel Standard program’s subsidies would be “highly disruptive, unprecedented and potentially catastrophic.”
      Faced with the potential loss of influence over some of his strongest congressional backers, Trump quickly told Pruitt to back off any future talk of cutting the ethanol subsidy."
      The subsidies keep changing form but they are still there whether they are in the form of mandatory blending, direct payments to ethanol producers, tax reductions on blended gas or other forms.

    We've used those teflon/resin plates on our 5th wheel camper for ten years or so and absolutely love the grease-less operation....with the exception of the jaws and king pin of course. It will be interesting to see how they work in a farming environment where things tend to be a bit dusty, muddy and all around more abrasive. Also, very happy to hear that your neighbor escaped the grim reaper! As you said, be careful in those bins.

    Grew up in the Ag industry in central IA with my dad having degrees in agronomy and running parent seed plants for a few seed corn companies in his career. I worked as a student seed science technician at Iowa State University Seed Lab. I ran germination tests to enable companies to sell their corn and beans on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange as well as others. Appreciate the time you take to keep me connected to my past. Stay safe

    Slick plates for 5th wheel RV's are awesome. The one I use is a round circle plate that fit over the pin and stayed attached to the rv. Sure is nice to not have to grease.

    Just a friendly reminder that any weight forward of the landing gear on a trailer can cause the trailer to lift the back of the trailer and pivot on the landing and the front will touch the ground. Must support the front of the trailer with a semi tractor or a fifth wheel support at the kingpin.

    Thanks for making the very serious point about suffocation through drowning in bins and pits it is a very real issue everywhere. There have been several deaths here in recent years with liquid manure pits and tanks especially where they have crusted over or are sufficiently enclosed such that Hydrogen Sulphide (the bad egg smell) levels build up with the same fatal result - not so long ago 3 members of the same family died of this in one incident.

    FYI on the 5th wheel plate they take the slop out of the plate and if you have any uneven terrain or really crowned roads they make it easy to get stuck in those situations

    Having said that, I'm glad that American farmers have somewhere to unload the corn. My first job was at a grain elevator leveling out the silos at the end of a tether at 14 because I was small and could be lowered in more easily!

    Another great video. amazed at how much of a mechanic and fix everything guy you have to be. Just wonder about your comment.“I didn’t think they would ever leave" is a standard comment but always thought it was a bit off. Then again I'm Canadian so we are all off a bit. Met a business fellow from California in BC elevator today. told him he was welcome any time and enjoy Canada.

    We get those plastic plates from our local truck shop
    $30 but they clip onto your trailer around the king pin rather than the plate
    Take about 30sec to install and no drilling
    They're actually a CNH part With a special clip
    I don't think they'd let you drill the fith wheel plate in Aus
    But super handy regardless how you go about it
    Same as you the gravel dust turns the grease to grinding compound and wears everything out super fast
