I can't remember the player, but a rookie once stole a ball from Larry, and Larry called him a 'little shit'. The guy said he was so happy about that! Said, he couldn't wait to get home that night to call his dad and tell him that Larry called him a little shit. He was just so proud that Larry noticed him. : )
Larry Bird was just phenomenal. I remember when Larry came into the league and I was a Knicks fan but seeing Larry playing for the Celtics, we just kept saying what? That's when I started taping Celtics games. And I do have a great amount of nostalgia at my disposal.
Your Larry Bird reactions are great! I think people say he's "not athletic" because that's easier to say than "he's not as athletic as many of the other players". Yes, he's an athlete. But compared to other NBA players, maybe he's not among the "most athletic". It didn't matter. His IQ was so high he was always where he needed to be, when he needed to be there. Over the top athleticism wasn't necessary at that point. He knew how to prevail.
When Bird was told that Isiah Thomas said if Bird was black, hed be just another good guy, he said,"So." He didnt care. He even defended Thomas from the backlash he was getting by saying that if it didnt bother him, it shouldnt bother anyone. Thomas says, to this day, that Bird helped save his butt.
If we didn't hear these stories from the greats who played against him, I wouldn't believe any of it. It's too over the top. One of my favorites is from John Stockton. He said before a particular game in Utah, Larry walked over to the Utah bench and said, "I feel like...43." Then he walked away, the game started, and by the end of the third quarter he had 43 points. No one talks like. Except Larry Legend.
Caitlin Clark reminds me of Bird, she doesn't shit talk except when she is on the floor playing the game the way it's supposed to be played. Both have court vision like no one else has. When you can shoot and dish out the assist like no other player on the court is an accomplishment other players wish they had. An assist is just harder to do than just pulling up for a jump shot, an assist makes two people happy at the same time, which is important for team chemistry
What Cedric Maxwell said was right. It was definitely racist. Judging his ability because of his skin color before you even know him. Exact same thing Caitlin Clark is going through right now.
Not really. It was prejudiced and uninformed, but racist is the wrong word. Basketball is primarily a Black-dominated sport, so especially back then if you didn't grow up knowing any white people... yeah.
@@Cannon4545 You just exactly defined racism. Racism by the dictionary is "a person who is prejudiced against or antagonistic toward people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group."
@@Cannon4545 You just exactly defined racism. "a person who is prejudiced against or antagonistic toward people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group."
@@Mark-r2r9k Not really. Being prejudiced (pre-judging) _about_ a group isn't the same as being prejudiced _against_ a group, much less antagonistic. By your own reasoning, Bird himself was "racist" for telling players/coaches it was "disrespectful to put a White guy on [him]"/guard him. Or for saying that "Black players were the best players". Both of which he said on multiple occasions.
Appreciate your take on Bird being an athlete. Obviously some are more athletic than others. Bird does have a video of him getting his own rebound switching hands with the ball in the air and making the shot.
I started watching Bird when he was in college, he had some of the best stats in college basketball and I watched every game that was available to watch on the internet. I didn't realize he ever said anything while in the game. I also didn't remember him dunking the basketball very much. He was an incredible player and you had to watch the whole game because he would do things that I had ever seen! He was just a great basketball player that didn't talk about other players behind their back, only one player he didn't like was Bill Lambeir, because he was a dirty player and Lambeir was a pretty good player but he tried to hurt players when
You are spot on about him wanting to make the game more interesting. Like shooting left handed. He got bored. By the way, Larry Bird ran marathons. He ran a 5 mile one the day before his 60 point game. He said he was stiff the next day, but was able to eventually get going. And I love Bill Walton. He really enjoyed playing with the Celtics and really loved working with them, especially Larry, but sometimes he slightly exaggerates a little. He was such a neat guy.
One of the greatest coach's of the game(Pat Riley)once said "If I have to choose a player to take a shot to save a game I'd choose Michael Jordan...If I have to choose a player to take a shot to save my life... I'd take Larry Bird!". Bird was a masterful basketball player. His game is ageless. And in top of that, he is the best trash talker in the history of the game and beyond but he baked up each and every time. To me, he is the Muhammed Ali of basketball.
Greatest front line of all time. Bird McHale Parish Walton. All Hall of Famers. Walton was an all time great center before injuries. Ring and finals MVP
I love the story of when Bird went to the other players bench and said to the coach "Frank don't you have anyone on the bench that can guard me, because nobody out here can" And Frank looked at his bench than back at Bird and said no.
As a showtime Lakers fan growing up, with Magic and Worthy as my favorite player, I hated the hell out of Larry. You don’t have that kind of hate for someone who isn’t great. Only recently have I started to appreciate just how great he was. He’s now in my top three GOATs. I don’t care if I never settle on a number one, different guys brought different things to the game. This dude brought so many different things, I just can’t not include him in that discussion. I out him over all my favorite Lakers and it feels dirty to say that. Wilt, Michael, Russell, I can’t rank them against each other. But he’s in that discussion for sure.
Also, Larry's trash talking was his way of creating his "bad guy" for the evening. It fuled his competitiveness and was also a psychological weapon. If you break down your opponent mentally, he's already done.
He was savage. 🔥 I bet 30 years from now CC & Reese will be on videos laughing about all this crap just like this. It reminds me of the Bird/Magic era just with the elevated toxicity of social media
Worthy chose Bird over doc so you know he respected Birds play. His asshole remark was about waiting for him to get close before shooting. It was said jokingly.
James Worthy once said, "Michael Jordan makes you look slow. Larry Bird makes you look stupid." Founder of the 50/40/90 club and only person in history to get MVP, Coach of the Year, and Executive of the Year. Only the third person to ever get three MVPs back to back to back. Invented the step back and was the first 6'10 sharp-shooting forward in NBA history. He was the template for LeBron and Durant. I am sure they washed footage of him. He could play in any era.
Clyde 'the Slide' Drexler. Gary 'the Glove' Peyton. All the black guys he'd shoot hoops with after work in French Lick when Larry was in high school. I think it was in "Magic and Bird: Courtship of Rivals".
Bird didn't see color, but he knew the best players over all were the black players. I'm 68 years old and it was unusual for a white player to dominate in basketball. There were good white players but the league was mostly black and I have no issues with that being the case but sometimes a white player comes in and play the level better than anyone! No I'm not having no hate for him for saying it is technically the definition of racism. Look up the definition of racism and say that's not what it is.
u can probably put Kobe on that killer list along with Bird and Mike.. only Kobe was not as effecient overall with his shooting or stats as either Bird OR mIke he STILL was a killer.. You dont get the nickname Black Mamba for no reason.
I tried watching, but too many pauses, and too many, know what I'm saying comments, good video but work on your pausing and thinking while the tape is paused.

I cant think of a higher compliment than James Worthy calling you "an asshole". 🤣🤣

James Worthy called Larry an "asshole" in the most loving way and with the utmost respect.
Didn't he tho!!! :)
Lance was telling a story about bird coming out while they were stretching and hitting 10 3s in a row and just walked off. Without saying a word. 😂
Bc he’s done it so many times. One of those documentaries, he said a shooter is one that could hit 67 in a row. That’s insane.

You are right on about Bird being an athlete. Actually he had the quickest and best hands ever.
Bird was definitely a rare generational talent even the great Michael Jordan had the supreme respect for Larry legend. He definitely helped the NBA.
Of course Bird was athletic.

Agreed. Basketball is a both physical and mental competition.
Larry ran 5 miles everyday. On game day too.
He had amazing stamina.
He practiced 365 days a year.

I agree
Cedric called a spade a spade ♠️ if you lived in the 70s 80s it's so different now. We've came a long way for sure.

Danny Ainge said they all talked Shyt, because, even if they weren't able to back it up, Larry was there, and he would for them.

23:58 - Kudos to Larry for putting himself between Dom full steam ahead and the rim. That's borderline foolishness.
They were playing for more than just rings!
Love it!
The word you are looking for is ( Don't judge a Book by its Cover) !!! That's Larry Bird. Too Slow, Can't jump, Can't Stop Larry Bird from Scoring!!!
He got into people's heads to get them off their game by talking trash. Just because they fell for it isn't his fault.
