What's most amazing is that Bird broke his back in 1985. That means he played over half of his career with what should have been a career-ending injury. If he has been healthy those 13 seasons he could have not only played longer but put up insane numbers that might never be reached.
And he messed up his finger during a baseball game and he himself said he NEVER had the same feel for the basketball. Could you imagine he would of been better had he not gotten the injury. And look what a great player he already already was.
@@bonniesmitth9744 That injury happened before his ROOKIE YEAR!!!!
There are many GOATS but only one LEGEND
You Have To Understand; Bird Was The FIRST To Do The 50-40-90 That Came About Because Of Him. That's The Reason Clayton-Video Said Bird Was The Founder, Because He Really Was The First.
MVP voting 1980-1988 seasons:
*1980* Kareem ( *_Bird_* 4th and RotY)
*1981* Dr. J ( *_Bird_* 2nd)
*1982* Moses Malone ( *_Bird_* 2nd)
*1983* Moses Malone ( *_Bird_* 2nd)
*1984* *_Bird_* (B. King 2nd)
*1985* *_Bird_* (Magic 2nd)
*1986* *_Bird_* (Dominique 2nd)
*1987* Magic (Jordan 2nd, *_Bird_* 3rd)
*1988* Jordan ( *_Bird_* 2nd)
*_Bird_* received *67% of all votes* for that 9 year period.
_1989 Bird had double bone spur/Achilles surgery_
(He was 4th in MVP in his rookie year (1980) behind Kareem, Dr. J and G. Gervin)
Back in the 80s, it was either the Lakers, Celtics, or 76ers with Dr. J. and Moses Malone. My family was 76ers fans and Dr. J was our guy. We got sick to our stomachs every time we had to play Bird.
LARRY LEGEND IS A UNICORN AND THE *TRUE* GOAT!!! 🐐 ☘️
All those statistics and comparisons making the GOAT case... Don't forget Bird also was the best trash talker, AND he backed it up for real.
Larry also received the *"Rookie of the Year Award"* ... Clayton forgot about that. Magic and Larry were *"REAL/TRUE FRIENDS"* and it was AWESOME to see 👀 both of them "officially retire" after the 1992 Olympics where they won the Golf Medal 🥇 with the *Dream Team!!!*
Jordan made players look slow...but Bird made them look stupid. 😂
Pat Riley said “ if you asked me who I’d take to win a game, I’d say Jordan. But if you asked me who I’d take to get the shot to save my life, it’s Larry Bird”!!!!!!
@@amyaeschbach3581 you got it.
While I do consider Jordan to be the absolute goat, I do have to admit that he didn't get his first title until after bird retired.
@patrickevans9604 while everyone played with athletics, he played with fundamentals and just fooled everyone. They didn't know if he would shoot the ball or pass it and became a nightmare for all these other Hall of Famers.
Magic made normal passes look amazing. Bird made amazing passes look normal.👍
Bird had no holes in his game. This is why he's in the GOAT conversation. What the announcer failed to mention is that Bird had a broken shooting hand when he missed that three pointer against L.A.
I’m a Celtics guy and think MJ is the goat, but Bird, Magic, Kobe all deserve to be in the conversation and you can make a case for them. I have to drop LeFlop due to the flopping, super team chasing, and the game management crap.
Watch Bird videos on playing hurt. It’s crazy.
_5 Times Larry Bird Refused to Quit_
AND
_4 Crazy Stories.... Larry Bird_
👍
Your statement is EXACTLY my same thoughts.👍
You also have to remember that bird hurt his back in 1986 putting gravel in his mom's driveway and then had surgery on both knees and was still cooking dudes until he retired
Bird's rookie year was the first year ever with a three point line..
He also was ROY
And one of 8 or 9 ROY winners also named to 1st team all NBA the same season.
James worthy says he still has nightmares about that shot. Larry was so clutch. You should watch the Larry bird underdog story. It's the 1981 year against the Philadelphia 76 ers . Only Larry's second year in the league. The Celtics were down 3-1. That playoff series was so exciting. Then you need to watch the finals against the Rockets that year. Larry bird was amazing. Those two series was soooo exciting and entertaining. ❤
Bird's career started with ROY and 4th in MVP. Then 3 years in a row finishing 2nd in MVP, and then 3 years in a row as MVP, then 3rd place, and then 2nd again.
Larry Bird was a fantastic player! He was one of a kind! Great reaction! Clayton does such great videos!
There’s some great videos about his entire life, that show you just how inspiring he truly his. He overcame so much! He had a career ending injury to his right hand/knuckle, and finger the summer before his first training camp in the NBA, for the Celtics.
When Clayton talks about Bird playing "white", four players are the contrast, all basically playing the same position:
* Dr J [76ers]
* Worthy [Lakers]
* Dominque [Hawks]
* Michael [Bulls]
All of them are known for flying. Bird, ironically, is the one who is grounded.
Thank you for the reaction. Glad to see people talking about Larry Bird who is my GOAT. I think everyone can choose who they want usually in their era but they never really ever talk about Larry or give him the dues he deserves. So many people say oh Bird did it like them but remember Larry did it first. Great chatter about it and glad to see you given him his props. Keep on trucken.
Did you notice that Larry signed his contract with his left hand? That is the secret that nobody ever talks about. He taught himself to shoot right handed. Imagine how many thousand shots you have to make to get that good with your off hand. Imagine trying to guard a man that can switch from right to left in a heartbeat. I never realized he was left handed until after he retired and I watched him play from college thru NBA. He made passes and shots left-handed every game but it looks so natural that most people don't even realize it. Phil
I grew up hating Larry Bird. I was born in L.A. and a Laker fan. I dredded playing the Celtics because I knew that Bird would always (seemingly) find a way to win. I'm glad that I can appreciate him now.
Only person who was elected to the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame as a player, a coach, and an executive...
Oh the East was a BEAST in the 80’s. 76ers Dr J, Moses, MoCheeks, Barkley. Bucks with Moncrief and Marques Johnson, ATL with Dominique. Pistons with Thomas and bad boys. Chicago with Jordan and a few yrs later Pippen. A few Knicks teams with Bernard King.
The West had LA and Houston with a little pinch of Portland. LA dominated the West, Houston won the West two time and I think LA the other 8 in the 80’s. West was two teams for a decade.
Larry Bird is the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 club, the only person in NBA history to be named Rookie of the Year, 3 point Champion three straight years, MVP three times straight (When competing against Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Dr. J, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy and many more), Finals MVP, All-Star MVP, Coach of the Year, and Executive of the Year. Also Hall Of Fame Head Coach Pat Riley once said " If I had to choose a player to make the winning shot of a game. I would pick Michael Jordan, but if I had to pick a player to make a shot to save my life. I would pick Larry Bird."
Larry was so damn good at basketball that he was able to get away with telling opponents exactly what he was about to do and the guy guarding him still couldnt stop him. This man actually told Barkley that they were being disrespectful by having a white guy guard him. He is the legend. He is THE white boy
While attending college Larry's team was playing ours and we heard they had a future all American on their team so during warm ups we tried to guess which black player he was. Well we were wrong and he beat our league champion team and set our arena scoring record! Love your insightful reactions! Peace from Northern Michigan.
Larry legend best small forward ever
He actually had a four year stretch where he avg a 50-40-90 over that four year.
You gotta do Making The Case for 1986 Celtics by same channel. Also Tim Duncan since I'm a Spurs fan.
50% from the field 40% from the field and 90% from the line.
40% from three.
Courtship of Rivals: Magic & Bird….you need to watch this documentary. One of if not the best sports documentary. It’s an HBO doc and is so well done. Love watching young bucks get informed on LB. Great video
He didn't mention on the video, that bird had a broken hand that game he missed the shot vs Magic. Got into a scuffle at a bar that week.
Bird and Magic had the highest basketball IQ's I ever seen... he was cold 🥶 as ice on the hardwood...I grew up with Bird, Magic, Dr.J, Kareem and Moses...these guys were basketball Gods 🪄✨...I would put them up against any playing today... when the games on the line Birds your guy... the greatest clutch player I ever seen...Bird, Kevin and Robert are my pick three 🍀🍀🍀
50% from the field, 40% from the 3point line, and 90% from the freethrow. :)
Such a great video, thanks for watching. Larry really was DIFFERENT!
I'd actually recommend watching all of the Making the Case videos, both for players and for teams. They're really well done and informative, and a lot of fun to watch.
A lot of people won't mention it but also one thing going for Bird is he has never had any suspicion of PED usage unlike many of the other Goats
I love the way you getting into Larry Bird. I live in San Antonio Texas. And the only games I would go see is the Boston Celtics. I would upset the ticket booth lady because I would say two tickets for the Boston Celtics. She would reply Spurs tickets and I would say, I'm not here to see the Spurs. I'm here to see Larry. My best games was when every time Larry would set up to take a 3 I would yell Bird for 3..My brothers would say, shut up your going to get us killed. I just tell them, we can take them...
There were still racial lines during his era. The Magic Johnson vs Larry Bird era was that deep. Their match up brought the NBA up to what it is today.
Definitely. He was dubbed 'The great white hope', in a league largely dominated by African Americans.
Larry could do it all. He belongs in the conversation for GOAT. Wilt is the GOAT, its a race for second. Its not even close.
50-40-90 means 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from three, and 90 percent from the free throw line.
Bird missed all but six games in his 12th season due to foot surgery, so basically he played in twelve seasons. I say this because I think you missed it😊.
Best I can ever post is this to Bird's greatness.
"If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I choose Michael Jordan. If I had to choose a player to take a shot. to save my life, I'd take Larry Bird."
Pat Riley
Larry Legend ✌️
40% 3pts, 50% 2pts, 90% Ft
What they don't show is Larry pulls open Magic Jersey to show that Magic was wearing a Celtic shirt!
The captain Kareem Abdul Jabar is the greatest basketball player of all-time. He won 3 college basketball championships . He led the freshman ucla men's basketball team over a win of the defending ucla men's varsity team by 10+ points . He played 20 years and played in 18 nba all star games . He was the nba all-time leading scoring for 40 years and he only made 1 3pt field goal . He's a 6x nba champion
The video Jordan vs. BIRD will blow your mind with the stats. Bird still beats him. Please check it out.
I was at the memorial coliseum in Portland for the famous Larry left handed game. I was at the coliseum for the dream team qualifying games in 92' I've been blessed to see Larry and magic play on the same court at the same time only once. In my opinion. There is no Larry without magic and there is no magic without bird! I am a lucky man! Thanks for the memories guys 😊
I was at that game against the Detroit Pistons and the Celtics in the finals
The reason why bird was who he was, was because growing up he played basketball with ninjas instead of white boys
Larry the legend bird will always be the goat I don't care what anybody says
50% overall 40% from three-point and 90% free throw
You should have her in more of you're videos
12:12 go back and look at his opponents and check out how many were in each conference
Michael is 0-6 to Bird during playoffs. And this was during a time when he was playing with a back brace because his back was so messed up.
Watch ALL the Making the Case videos!
💯
