4:11 damn y'all that far. Can't wait! 8:50 fun fact: in one of the pop-up commentaries they mentioned the Jet was Katara's first kiss. 14:22 originally they were going to have longshot shoot Jet as a mercy killing or something like that. But they network said it was too dark.
Yeah it was planned because they wanted that Jet dies fast and not to have to go trough the pain by dying slowly so for that longshot wanted to shout at him but Nickelodeon didn't want to kids see a Child (Since Jet was still 16 in the series) die in the series the creator have to do write that scene again so that was the result at the end.
The scene where Aang fights Jet is kind of a mirror to the first time they fought. Aang refused to fight him both times because he saw him as an ally, a friend.
Laogai is also a chinese term for the use of concentration camps and forced labour to "reform" someone. Fitting for what the Joo Dees are dealing with.
In the original draft of the script Longshot in fact _was_ implied to put an arrow through Jet to put him out of his misery, and Jet nods at him to do it. They changed it last minute and it ended up with Longshot pointing his arrow at literally nothing, no threats were coming that way. Your dark assumption was actually pretty on the money of how that scene was written. And yeah "he's lying" was the best indication that Jet died.
Man, this episode really makes me feel like it was a missed opportunity to have Jet join Team Avatar. Especially for later on in Book 3 would have been really interesting to see Jet in the Fire Nation and seeing that not all people from the Fire Nation are evil monsters and they could have brought back the leader of the Rough Rhinos for Jet to have some closure by taking him down. Like I said it was a missed opportunity for him.
I actually disagree. The entire point of Jet's character is that just because someone is "on your side" does not make you tactically aligned. Jet irrational hatred for all firebenders serves to put the Gaang in stark relief for humanizing the people of all nations.
I like how Zuko gains development when he's with uncle Iroh and when he wears the blue spirit mask. When Zuko frees Appa, it mirrors the same way when Zuko frees Aang.
On this rewatch I’m also wondering if zuko tossing the blue mask away is him heading towards defying his father and the father nation as himself, unmasked
Jet's death is depicted as unclear is a reference to Internet fan discussions over the unclear nature of Jet's fate in this episode, but later confirmed during the San Diego Comic-Co This is the second episode in which Jet and Aang battle, the first being "Jet" when Aang fought Jet to get his glider back. When Zuko attempts to capture Appa, Iroh interrupts him and says, "This is exactly what happened when you captured the Avatar at the North Pole! You had him, and then you had nowhere to go!" Later Iroh states, "If his friends hadn't found you, you would have frozen to death!" Both are referring to the events of "The Siege of the North, Part 2". The marks resulting from Appa biting Long Feng in this episode serve as evidence in the episode "The Earth King" to prove to Earth King Kuei that Long Feng lied about never seeing a sky bison before. This is the last time Zuko is seen as the Blue Spirit, as he throws the mask into Lake Laogai. This is the first time Zuko speaks while disguised as the Blue Spirit. This is the only episode in which Longshot speaks. Toph's ability to tell when someone is lying is introduced. Lake Laogai" won the Primetime Emmy Award for Individual Achievement Award. The two questions Uncle Iroh asks Zuko to ask himself, "Who are you" and "What do you want" are prominent philosophical questions from the sci-fi series Babylon 5 designed to represent order and chaos respectively. The basic plot of this episode is similar to X-Men 2. There was a government conspiracy, the Dai Li's leader is secretly controlling the Earth Kingdom, that both the "good guys", Team Avatar, and "bad guys", Freedom Fighters, agreed was bad, and thus teamed up to infiltrate a secret government base hidden under Lake Laogai, which they found the location of by probing a brainwashed friend's mind. One of the characters, Jet, dies, and the bad guys, Iroh and Zuko, escape. When Sokka tries to convince Katara to kiss Jet to reinstate his memory, Aang expresses apparent jealousy, stating it is a bad idea. This is the only episode in which Uncle Iroh reprimands Zuko. While trying to regain his memory, Jet has a flashback to his childhood in which it is revealed that the Rough Rhinos were responsible for the destruction of his hometown and the murder of his parents.
One thing I loved about what iroh said to his Nephew is that when you think about it...he essentially described a running gag when it comes to zuko finding the avatar.... Its a theme that hes so driven to capture aang that he doesnt think of potential consequences or set backs as he sets out on his journey; when he teamed up with those pirates.... he didnt contemplate the possibility of betrayal.. when going to free aang from zhao, he didnt contemplate a further plan of action.....
6:10 damn katara was out for blood way earlier then I realized did u see how impaled jet would be if he didn't block them icicles they were aimed right at him not his clothing at first lol yikes 😳
Not only is it amazing to see new people watch and enjoy ATLA, but I love the face that the show totally turned Jiu Di into a meme about the coronavirus.
Not sure if y'all will see this now, but when longshot pulls out an arrow and points away from Jet, he was originally pointing it at Jet and going to do a mercy kill. The studio changed it since that would be pretty nuts for a nickelodeon show.
1:45 There wasn't a random trapdoor there, he earthbended the ground. Appa either fell into a tunnel made for catching him, some kind of sewer, or an existing secret tunnel for Dai Lee agents to get around the city with. It's not like the guy just randomly found Appa and dropped him down. He lured Appa to him, there had to have been something down there he knew he could use. Is the past tense of bending bended or bent?
He actually didn't kill them, he lied to protect the last of the dragons. When aang and zuko go to the ancient fire temple together they find out the last of the dragons are ran and Shao, the firebending masters.
When Zuko drops his duo swords and lets out a scream, Jet does the same thing. In a way both of them are brainwashed into doing something because Zuko has been chasing a futile mission from the beginning and now he's opening his eyes and realizing that it was hopeless and wrong
Ba Sing Se might be just like some other cities that have ancient cities below them like some cities in Europe. It’s not necessarily a trap, just an older road system with a newer city built on top of it.
I completely forgot about Katara looking back at the water, thinking about Jet. She may have *grew* to love Aang. But she *fell* in love with Jet from day 1
I think that it's mainly about Zuko struggling with his self identity (rather than him not thinking things through), which is why I also think that the Blue Spirit plays such a significant role since it symbolizes his struggle with his identity. Also, that's why Iroh sugested to Zuko that he's chasing a destiny that others put on him instead of chasing his own. I think that Zuko getting rid of the mask is one step forward in him regaining his true sense of self
So did Jet die? Yes, look where Katara's healing glow was, his rib case and a crushed rib cage is impossible to recover from. Plus when the Freedom fighters re-appeared in the in-canon comic book series 'The Promise" Jet isn't with them, the leadership role having been taken over by Smellerbee.
4:26 has me crying omg "Whhhyyyy?!?!? Why??" "Why would she do that??" "We LIVE here!" "...but I guess she could technically just fix it" "Yeah???? How's she gonna fix it, she's blind!"
That’s why this episode is so great, beside the tale of Ba Sing Se, that seeing what is going on really reviled what they found out. And even Uncle Iroh, he definitely gave Zuko the choice that needed of what is at heart, then at stake.
The scene of long shot drawing his bow and pointing it towards the door was actually supposed to be him pointing it at Jet to mercy kill him. But Nickelodeon thought it was too dark
Fun fact : the mask zuko used actually belonged to his mother she used to play in a theatre and kept her masks as a reminder of her past since she was forced to marry firelord ozai and actually was in love with someone else
I said last avatar vid that I finished the whole Avatar series waiting (witch I did) but *THIS TIME* I finished *all* of Legend Of Kora, Y’all should check that out after Last Air Bender :b
Oh btw, I believe in this episode iroh's voice actor switched which is why his voice might sound a little more pitchy during his yelling, the old voice actor for iroh passed away and tale's of iroh was a tribute to him, may he rest in peace
Pretty sure Mako recorded pretty much all of season 2 before he passed. There are a few lines here and there that they had to record later with a different actor, but most of it is still Mako through the end of the season.
for many years fans never knew if Jet died and then i think someone asked during a convention and the creators said Jet was canonically dead so yeah legit Jet really did die down their even though it wasn’t clear and all of us were hella confused 😆 lol
Iroh said "Time for a reality check that's LONG overdue" - It's the only time he's raised his voice with Zuko, and it happened because he couldn't stand by and watch Zuko ruin his own life anymore
crazy that zuko found appa the exact same day he realised he was missing when everyone else has spent ages to get to this point. bro a professional at tracking people down, imagine how much shit they couldve got done if he joined them earlier
Well actually our boy yaroshi was right at 14:21 Originally the Creators planned that longshot shout an Arrow at Jet's heart (Jet nodding in agreement to this tough) to help Jet for dying faster and not going to have to die in much pain that he's having by dying slowly but since nickelodeon thought that would be to much to be in a kids show they did have to write that Scene again and that's the result that came out. But yes Jet died in this since and it was because he had serious internal injuries so to make his death quick longshot wanted to shout at him. That's what the Creators said later and confirm Jet's death.
I think realizing/remembering that Iroh lost his own son, and Zuko almost freezing to death as well, at the north pole, with Iroh thinking of Zuko like his own son, that whole speech really hits me different. Did Iroh have a similar argument with his own son, begging him not to go into danger, or is it more likely that Iroh wishes he'd had that discussion, or wish that he could have had it? It just strikes me as a real hitter and, though I think it would have ruined the moment, how easily could Iroh have slipped and called Zuko, Lu Ten instead?

Iroh: *have you tried thinking?*
"You never think this things through" is a wake up call for everyone. Uncle Iroh is the best!
Iroh is such a kind and gentle man so hearing him raise his voice and finally put his foot down on Zuko is so powerful
4:11 damn y'all that far. Can't wait!
8:50 fun fact: in one of the pop-up commentaries they mentioned the Jet was Katara's first kiss.
14:22 originally they were going to have longshot shoot Jet as a mercy killing or something like that. But they network said it was too dark.
hopefully Netflix follows through but of course nothing is for sure now with the writers leaving :(
Yeah it was planned because they wanted that Jet dies fast and not to have to go trough the pain by dying slowly so for that longshot wanted to shout at him but Nickelodeon didn't want to kids see a Child (Since Jet was still 16 in the series) die in the series the creator have to do write that scene again so that was the result at the end.
The scene where Aang fights Jet is kind of a mirror to the first time they fought. Aang refused to fight him both times because he saw him as an ally, a friend.
8:36 KILLED ME “I’m actually not the blue mask, I’m a brooom.” 😂😂😂😂😂
The Dai Li's name Is probably a reference to the real Chinese spy/leader of intelligence during WW2 times. His name was Dai Li.
Neat.
Sad that you cut out "he's lying" scene because it's so powerful but still loved the reaction
Agreed! That line is powerful af. It's basically Toph confirming that they straight up just murdered this kid on screen

All these people complaining about no avatar when they just had to wait
Am I the only one who felt a wave of emotions overcome them when Uncle Iroh was speaking to Zuko. Uncle Iroh is da best
Katara STILL BLUSHED when she saw Jet.
Yup
Iroh's tough love is always amazing to see.
“Why?! We live here!” Lmao. Between this and the Wan Shi Tong-was-mugged comments, your Avatar reactions are quickly becoming my favourite.
Zuko is so obsessed with capturing the avatar because he thinks its the only way his father will love him. It's pretty sad how Ozai messed zuko's head
Lake Laogi was a top tier episode, easily amongst the Top ten of the whole series!
Easily?.. i doubt it
THE 202 well not “easily” but subjectively in my top ten.
i agree with you lake Laogi is amazing
The best episode, no question
"Actually I'm not blue mask I'm a broom" Ha awesome!
Jet's death is depicted as unclear is a reference to Internet fan discussions over the unclear nature of Jet's fate in this episode, but later confirmed during the San Diego Comic-Co
This is the second episode in which Jet and Aang battle, the first being "Jet" when Aang fought Jet to get his glider back.
Damn, you can't find that many references and call-backs even in an entire show sometimes, Avatar is just godlike.
@Kim Keeks They must be already finishing The Legend of Korra by the time the next episode comes out, nothing we say here will be a spoiler to them
One thing I loved about what iroh said to his Nephew is that when you think about it...he essentially described a running gag when it comes to zuko finding the avatar....
The funny thing is that mr crabs is long fang lol 🤣
Also Lex Luthor
IM WHEEZING 🤣🤣🤣🤣
“Yeaaahh???? How she gonna fix it?! She’s BLIND!”
Bro the blind jokes with Toph in this show are fucking hilarious
6:10 damn katara was out for blood way earlier then I realized did u see how impaled jet would be if he didn't block them icicles they were aimed right at him not his clothing at first lol yikes 😳
13:28 Very much appreciate the Sora, Aang kinda sounding like him with the last line makes it even better
Not only is it amazing to see new people watch and enjoy ATLA, but I love the face that the show totally turned Jiu Di into a meme about the coronavirus.
A fun fact that old janitor man is actually a Dai Lee agent spy also an retired Dai Lee agent. He just doing some small favor for Long Fei.
Not sure if y'all will see this now, but when longshot pulls out an arrow and points away from Jet, he was originally pointing it at Jet and going to do a mercy kill. The studio changed it since that would be pretty nuts for a nickelodeon show.
In regards to the “random trapdoor” Long Fang literally led Appa to the the trap door. It was not random it probably a tunnel to Lake Laogai.
1:45
There wasn't a random trapdoor there, he earthbended the ground.
1:55 well, perhaps... A SECRET TUNNEEEEL!!! 🤘😫
The “SHOWDOWN” is coming😏😏😏
I gotta say, them breaking into the palace before the showdown is the most underrated fight scene.
Iroh was saving Zuko from the same mistake that he made. “Killing the last of the dragons.” The same way zuko was going to kill the last sky bison.
He actually didn't kill them, he lied to protect the last of the dragons. When aang and zuko go to the ancient fire temple together they find out the last of the dragons are ran and Shao, the firebending masters.
He wasn't going to kill Appa, his entire plan revolved around taking Appa as bait. Zuko doesn't abuse animals.
But she *fell* in love with Jet from day 1
“Who are you, and what do you want”, always gives me chills.
That Iroh speech gets me all the time. Spine chilling goosebumps.
“ I’m actually not the blue mask ha ima Broom 😏🧹”
🤣🤣🤣
I like how the intro makes my headphones go 'BOOM'
What an episode, from Iroh’s speech to the conspiracy under the lake! My favorite part has to be the reunion, though!
“Who are you and what do you want”
That was a mighty strong words of Iroh
You know that you've messed up in life when IROH and I repeat IROH shouts at you
Iroh being a father. That’s what God wants, us to think for ourselves instead our parents/society imposing their will on us.
I think that Zuko getting rid of the mask is one step forward in him regaining his true sense of self
finally i've been waiting for this

We all have. Can’t wait for them to see Aang’s progress 😄

Love your reactions!!! I straight up laugh out loud sometimes when you guys react to scenes! Glad you’re enjoying the show!
4:26 has me crying omg
"Whhhyyyy?!?!? Why??"
"Why would she do that??"
"We LIVE here!"
"...but I guess she could technically just fix it"
"Yeah???? How's she gonna fix it, she's blind!"
The Appa and Aang reunion almost made me cry. It was so sweet 🥰❤
Iroh and Zuko's scene in the chamber is one of my favorite moments in avatar
Imagine having to be hired to guide and direct Gaang like Joo Dee. What a nightmare😭 be like baby sitting all bad kids
That scene with Iroh will never not give me goosebumps!!

Oh btw, I believe in this episode iroh's voice actor switched which is why his voice might sound a little more pitchy during his yelling, the old voice actor for iroh passed away and tale's of iroh was a tribute to him, may he rest in peace
I thought the voice actor didn't change until Season 3?
Actually, yeah. The episode was dedicated to Mako but he already recorded all of Season 2. They changed the voice actor in Season 3.
2:10 Ironically, character voiced by Sokka's voice actor in Dragon Prince is expert artist.
“The development!”
Season 3: hold my development
crazy that zuko found appa the exact same day he realised he was missing when everyone else has spent ages to get to this point. bro a professional at tracking people down, imagine how much shit they couldve got done if he joined them earlier
Ok Aang crying while he hugged Appa got me
Zuko: my uncle
Fandom: OUR uncle
Well actually our boy yaroshi was right at 14:21 Originally the Creators planned that longshot shout an Arrow at Jet's heart (Jet nodding in agreement to this tough) to help Jet for dying faster and not going to have to die in much pain that he's having by dying slowly but since nickelodeon thought that would be to much to be in a kids show they did have to write that Scene again and that's the result that came out. But yes Jet died in this since and it was because he had serious internal injuries so to make his death quick longshot wanted to shout at him. That's what the Creators said later and confirm Jet's death.
Couple more episodes plz... Have been waiting alot ma dudes ...
Thanks for keeping iroh's speech. I think this was the point when Avatar went from a good show, to an amazing show
Just seeing you guys faces on my screen just brightens my day 😊 love y'all reactions!!
What is lupa taking about at 8:17 😂😂😂

Fun fact: Laogai is the word for a Chinese labor prison where they keep political dissidents.
Interesting
e young vigilante Jet, held a deep-seated grudge against the Fire Nation because of an attack by the Rough Rhinos, who killed his parents and burned his village to the ground. Colonel Mongke was seen in his flashback. Jet's hook swords are known as Fu Tao or Shuang Gou, an exotic Chinese weapon. he is the first person for katara to ever have a crush on
15:02 earth bender skipped like a rock. Such a good joke lol
I never thought about this before but how the heck did Zuko find and break into Lake Laogai without Toph.
He used the path she brought to the surface as you can see when he gets out with Iroh
That Dai Li agent he caught probably told him
The show just gets better 😭🙌🏾 also, the Mr. Krabs line had me DYING
the fact my boy zuko prince of the fire nation heir to the throw out smarted out strealthed and made a dai li agent bitch up is very dope
