The waterfall Piandao has Sokka paint is heavily based on the Gullfoss Waterfall in Iceland, famed for its rainbows. Prior to beginning the final season, the show's creators traveled around Iceland, gathering inspiration for what the Fire Nation landscape would resemble. When Toph is playing with the meteorite rock at the end of the episode, one of the shapes she forms is a "splat". This is a reference to the Nickelodeon logo at the time of the episode's airing. The armor that Aang wears in the weapon shop is inspired by an early toy design of Aang with an armor suit. Additionally, the left gauntlet of the armor is similar to the right gauntlet design of the Soul Calibur character Nightmare. The white lotus appears a number of times in Piandao's castle, as do designs inspired by the lion turtle. Piandao suggests Sokka to use the name "Lee" while he is in the Fire Nation, as Lee is a common name. This is the same name Zuko used while living in the Earth Kingdom during the second book, while he was trying not to be discovered as being from the Fire Nation. What Piandao tells Sokka about imagining the sword as part of your own body mirrors what Suki told him about the fan in the first season. Zuko said something similar to Lee in "Zuko Alone", adding that his two swords are not separate, but two halves of the same deadly weapon. Robert Patrick, Piandao's voice actor, played the T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The T-1000 could literally make its arms into swords, paralleling what Piandao says to Sokka when comparing the sword to a "long, very sharp arm". Piandao is based on Sifu Kisu, the fighting instructor for the show. The weapons store shopkeeper resembles Iroh and is even voiced by the same voice actor.
What’s also cool is Meteor Steel is actually a thing you can get today. Some really impressive knives and other pieces were crafted using it. The black color of his blade is actually only possible with a black staining technique, but Man at Arms did a great attempt to make a replica of Sokka’s sword. Check it out, it’s dope as hell.
Master Piandao’s character design was based on the real life appearance of the martial arts consultant of the show Sifu Kisu and was voiced by Terminator Judgement Day actor Robert Patrick (T-1000)
You guys mention how Sokka picked up swordsmanship so fast but keep in mind that he’d already spent most of his life training in melee combat. It’s kinda like how Aang picked up water bending from Katara so quick back in book 1, the skills from air bending were semi-transferable.
Info bomb. The sword of Mars, wielded by Attila The Hun, was made from a comet. The lore behind the sword is that it fell in a metal ball, and was a gift from god to Attila.
Meteorite is actually used i some blade works. But its super expensive and still needs steel incorporated to make a good lade. Its often used as Damascus in layers.
Theory: did Sokkas master initiate him into the ancient secret society? That lotus tile was specifically handed to him. And each member has one. Just saying.
Way back in the day it was basically impossible to refine iron into steel without the right tech. However, meteorites get burned up so much that there would be steel. So the earliest steel swords were actually from meteorites. However, it looks like steel tech does exist in the avatar universe. So I think Soka just wanted the meteorite because it's cool. Edit - I would also like to mention that the White Lotus organization did actually exist in Chinese history. They can be traced back to the Yuan dynasty. And I don't want to talk to much or it might spoil stuff in the show.
I know this is an old video but I had some thoughts about the speed of Sokka's training that only occurred to me on rewatch. Lots of people say that they kind of rushed Sokka's experience with sword training because they have limited time to work with, but the more I thought about it the more I realised it's all basically an extrapolation of his existing experience and talents. He's a planner, we've seen that since forever, Sokka's a good strategist who thinks outside the box and can problem solve exceptionally well, but when he's caught off-guard, he kind of flounders. He usually picks up but it's the strength of the group that makes up for his shortcomings in not being able to react quickly to a problem. All Piandao's training focuses on exactly the fast thinking that Sokka hasn't really cultivated up to this point. It's not that Sokka learned how to be great with a sword in a day, it's that he learned to direct his existing skills in a faster pace, how to apply his strategic thinking more calmly. Commit to the battlefield, understand its situation, realise how the greater context of the surroundings can be used to support yourself. He's always been good at these things, but this is where he learns the confidence and thought process to do it in the moment.
I saw someone once who said that individually Sokka and Aang are genius' in their fields, but put them together and they're the definition of the "My last two brain-cells" meme, and boy if that ain't the truth
People always get hung up on how fast Sokka learns swordplay, but it's not like he's starting from nothing. Throughout the show, he's shown at least some proficiency, or implied proficiency, with: - A boomerang (a pretty specialized weapon, if you think about it) - A watertribe club - A machete - A whalebone dagger - A spear (wielded against Zuko in Ep. 2, he probably wouldn't have tried using it unless he thought he could fight with it) - Kyoshi warrior fans He's smart and capable, and able to pick up on new skills quickly. Training with Piandao wasn't about becoming a warrior, but rather about realizing he already was one, and that he was worth more than he thought. He needed confidence.
16:37 I never thought that. The order of the white lotus being what it is and how helpful it can be in a difficult situation, and that’s why Iroh made such a big deal to find a new tile.
Fun fact about Master Piando: after he left the fire nation army, a whole squad of soldiers showed up to try and take him back. He was able to beat them all back. From that day on, the fire nation army left him alone.
Fun fact: the armor Aang was in at the beginning of the episode was the creators response to Nickelodeon asking if they could draw Aang in something “cool” so they could turn it into a toy 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
It took all elements to make that sword and the art of the sword belongs to all nations Same with making tea it requires all elements if you think about it
I get you all are trying to figure out a greater meaning to him choosing the meteorite for the sword, but honestly it’s just because it’s cool to have a sword made of a meteorite
13:52 you know what's funny.... It comes all the way back round to season 1,Sokka's instincts. Through this entire fight he's panicking but it's his instincts of survival that come into play. They were never wrong after that episode 😅😅
4:30 - Nightmare?? Yes man, finally someones with me! He was my fav char to play with back then stay healthy guys and keep on with your awesome reactions, could watch you all day - greets from germany! ☺
4:23 thats exactly what happened to me when i first started learning how to use nunchucks in tae kwon do but after a lot of practice i got the hang of it and started using the not foamy ones
thats such a great concept about sokka's space sword. I saw it as the meteorite being a symbol at the beginning of his normal being. He felt so defeated that he couldn't do anything about the meteorite at the beginning, because he knew that if it was just him - the destruction would have progressed. But now he found a whole new meaning to it when he decided to make his sword out of it. And he turned that symbolism of the meteorite into a new one, one of his new skill set as a swordman.
Aang wearing that over exaggerated armor was a inside joke about how Nickelodeon kept pressuring them to make toys by putting the characters in outfits like that for no reason

the last shape of the space earth that toph formed with her bending skills was the nickelodeon symbol/icon
last time i was this early Roku was still the avatar
What’s also cool is Meteor Steel is actually a thing you can get today. Some really impressive knives and other pieces were crafted using it. The black color of his blade is actually only possible with a black staining technique, but Man at Arms did a great attempt to make a replica of Sokka’s sword. Check it out, it’s dope as hell.
Sheera waving her little hand is everything that is good in this universe.
One of my favorite episodes, it displays the best qualities of Sokka and also his importance in Team Avatar.
Fun Fact: Master Piandao is voiced by Robert Patrick aka T-1000 from Terminator
Really?????
"Have you seen this boy?" *Holds up picture of Aang*
Wait WHAT?!
This is one of my FAVORITE episodes I was waiting for this day lol
I just realized what Sokka said after the blind joke! The dude actually said, "you've never NOT seen anything like this". LMAOOO 😂😂😂😂
Meteorite is actually used i some blade works. But its super expensive and still needs steel incorporated to make a good lade. Its often used as Damascus in layers.
2:32 always doing her dirty 🤣🤣🤣💀💀💀
Avatar reactions from both you guys AND Aege&Chill in the same day? Luckkkky!
*Going through a hard time right now and these reactions are getting me through. I just like hanging out with y’all 🥺*
One of my favorites! The growth, the teachings... then Iroh! Level epicness!
Can't wait for my other favorite!
Zuko making his cover name Lee is basically:
Person: What's your name?
Zuko: "uhhhh John Smith"
Yo y’all intro is literally the only one I let play in it’s entirety 😂 literally the only one it’s fire yo 🔥
8:32 foreshadowing of the Lion Turtle
Sokka hit his lowest point, and was opened to the greatest change
7:01, the second time Aang burned Katara🔥🔥
People always get hung up on how fast Sokka learns swordplay, but it's not like he's starting from nothing. Throughout the show, he's shown at least some proficiency, or implied proficiency, with:
- A boomerang (a pretty specialized weapon, if you think about it)
- A watertribe club
- A machete
- A whalebone dagger
- A spear (wielded against Zuko in Ep. 2, he probably wouldn't have tried using it unless he thought he could fight with it)
- Kyoshi warrior fans
He's smart and capable, and able to pick up on new skills quickly. Training with Piandao wasn't about becoming a warrior, but rather about realizing he already was one, and that he was worth more than he thought. He needed confidence.
The rainbow Sokka drew was from those hippie guys from Book 2 when they travel through the Badger Mole cave way to Omashu.
This. Is about the shape Iroh was in during the war. Before his son died. A total beast.
Just wait until you see what Toph's love life will be like.
Sokka: I can’t do anything
Lupa: Yes
😂😂
16:37 I never thought that. The order of the white lotus being what it is and how helpful it can be in a difficult situation, and that’s why Iroh made such a big deal to find a new tile.
Fun fact about Master Piando: after he left the fire nation army, a whole squad of soldiers showed up to try and take him back. He was able to beat them all back. From that day on, the fire nation army left him alone.
every time these videos come out im busy doing something and every time i put it off to watch. and EVERY time i feel its worth it
This is one of the reasons this show was so great everyone had a purpose even the comic relief
15:33 The splat Toph made was suppose to the Nickelodeon splat I think
I literally can’t wait until they get to the Puppetmaster lol
Luppa is this group sokka, funny, wity, crearive, this is why luppa is my favorite
The actor who voices Piandao Sokkas master was the liquid terminator of t2
"Starting to HEAT up"
Me: Sokka would be proud 😂
Fun fact: the armor Aang was in at the beginning of the episode was the creators response to Nickelodeon asking if they could draw Aang in something “cool” so they could turn it into a toy 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
It took all elements to make that sword and the art of the sword belongs to all nations
Same with making tea it requires all elements if you think about it
it's my headcanon that Sokka was training with Piando for at least a few days instead of a day lol
I get you all are trying to figure out a greater meaning to him choosing the meteorite for the sword, but honestly it’s just because it’s cool to have a sword made of a meteorite
Fun Fact: the meteor shower is a reminder that Sozin’s comet is making its way to earth.
I find something new to love about this episode every time I watch it.
He was my fav char to play with back then
stay healthy guys and keep on with your awesome reactions, could watch you all day - greets from germany! ☺
my favorite “i guess the jokes don’t run in the family” like damn 😭
I swear at the start of the video the amount of laughter is unbelievable
I'm sure the writers would've wanted the Sokka's training to be longer, but they were limited by the preset time limit of Sozen's comet. :/
