This episode also surprises me. There are episodes in Avatar that are known for the emotional hits, but this one always comes out of nowhere because it mixes the sad and the scary in a way that feels more mature than previous episodes. It's an underrated favorite of mine!
The stretch of episodes from 2x06 to 3x01 is in my opinion the best of the whole series (and really high up there in all shows ever). All of them hit so hard for me.
You can't really 'hate' characters like Zuko who's life had been trapped by the sin of his own father. Being empathetic finds the way to give the right people with the right heart a chance to set all the mistakes right, while hate gives a blind path of misunderstanding.
I don't know how many of you fans noticed or not but in Jets memory flashback when he was a boy and his village was being burnt the fire bender that he sees in his flashback is the leader of the rough rhinos
Yep, Aang's entire country was slaughtered, Katara & Sokka's mom was killed, Appa was kidnapped and spent maybe a month suffering in a variety of ways, Iroh's son was killed in war, you could write a book on all of Zuko's shit, but #1 would be the "fatherlord" burned his face off and banished him for the "crime" of speaking at the wrong time. Oh, and Jet's parents were killed and now a cult killed him and his buddies in a creepy basement (it is implied). This is a kid's show?
I'm glad they remind us that his family was slaughtered by the Fire Nation right in front of him when he was just a little child. Yes, the plan he had to drown a village full of people was crazy and going too far, but there's a good reason why he was driven to such extremes. I think when Zuko meets him on that boat, he really was trying to atone for his sins and leave his trauma behind. He seemed genuine when he talked about how he made mistakes and wanted a fresh start in the city. We have no reason to believe that he had any ill intentions (even though he robs the kitchen, he did it to feed the poor, hungry passengers, and nobody got hurt). He only reverts when he notices Iroh firebend to heat his tea. Jet's weakness is the Fire Nation. As soon as you bring them up, his trauma comes back, and he stops thinking clearly. I'm sure after that he couldn't see Iroh and Zuko as "human" anymore, all he could see was the faces of the people who killed his family, and he unraveled.

"tornado windball..." Some people think we saw the aftermath of that when we saw Monk Gyatsu surrounded by dead firebenders. But you know, that really was unclear... You finally get some resolution here.
The Earth Kingdom/Ba Sing Se is very much designed to be a regime in free fall. When governments are collapsing, they almost always resort to totalitarianism in a desperate effort to cling to power for power's sake (i.e., control of the people, not care for the people). And along with this, more often than not, the guy at the top who you would think is in control (the king, emperor, president, tsar, etc.) is just a powerless figurehead for the real power brokers who are constantly scheming behind the scenes, tearing everything up from the inside as they all fight with each other for a piece of the disintegrating pie. A real-world example of the Earth Kingdom at this stage in the game would be the Chinese Empire right before its collapse.
The creepy thing is there's no way to prove that there aren't real world "Dai Lee" groups like this. If there were, nobody would ever find out, would they? They keep their existence and activities on a need to know basis, after all. You know...without the cartoon depiction of brainwashing obviously. Real brainwashing is not achieved in a matter of 5 minutes with hypnosis, it's more like subtly getting a young or vulnerable person to blindly trust someone/something over time.
