The General Cemetery Company of Dublin was established by an Act of Parliament in 1834 during the 4th and 5th years of the reign of King William IV. There were nearly 100 shareholders in this new company with an initial capital of £12,000, subscribed in £10 shares. This company bought the lands and house of Mount Jerome in Harold’s Cross from the Earl of Meath, John Chambre, on the 23rd January 1836. This is the reason why the General Cemetery Company of Dublin became popularly known as Mount Jerome Cemetery.
The first burial took place on 19th September 1836 of the infant twins of Matthew Pollock. Since then 220,000 interments have taken place over the last 185 years. The cemetery started at 26 acres and expanded to its present 48 acre size in 1874.
Because Mount Jerome became established during the Victorian era, the monuments you find here are a materialistic expression of the success of the Victorian middle classes from that period. As a result Mount Jerome Cemetery has one of the finest collections of Victorian memorials, tombs, vaults and crypts in Ireland.
Due to the declining burial numbers in the 1970’s, the condition of the Cemetery began to deteriorate as revenues fell. In 1984 it was put into voluntary liquidation. By the late 1990’s, it had fallen into a serious state of neglect with large swaths of the cemetery covered in overgrowth.
However with new owners in 1998 and the opening of a Crematorium in 2000, revenues have recovered and the Cemetery has undergone a complete reversal of fortune. The ongoing funds provided by the Crematorium have afforded the Cemetery the means to put in place a proper maintenance program to prevent it falling into decline again.

For anyone else wondering, esquire after a name, meant a landowner, or someone of the English gentry who was just under a knight. In modern day a lawyer can have that after their name. Thank you for showing us this incredible place. We don’t have cemeteries like that in Texas. I didn’t mind the wind, it added to the atmosphere and seemed as though I was actually there. Such masterful stonework. I wonder if the skeleton was exposed simply because the coffin rotted away, or someone disturbed the crypt? Unusual to see so many recent burials intermingled among the very old graves. I guess they have records to know where there is still empty space. We should pause and remember those who came before. These were the Victorians who in many ways laid the foundation to our modern world. Requiescat in pace.

It's not strange outside of North America for a family to reuse the same funeral plot after 20 years. The remains are often respectfully re-burried in the soil of said crypt when it is opened and then the next coffin goes above. Often it's wgy a lot of crypts are large plots or very deep so there is space for the next. The life expectancy was 30-50 only 100 years ago and people were not preserved and embalmed the way it is done in North America so a body can decay within 20-25 years. I think there is 17 years between my grandmother and her uncle who was beneath her. He was at least 15ft down. Granny is at 9 ft. There is space for 1 more if one of my aunts pass. Grandma was 96 at death and my aunts are in their 80s (14-17 years older than mom) and they are widows. I found it shocking when I first found out but really, we don't last forever so it isn't that strange.

I recently found the grave of family members who died long before I was born. The last interrment was in 1935. None of the older generation of my family who knew them are alive today so I placed a wreath on the grave on Christmas Eve and I'll continue to so so

There is a huge cemetery up north in Derry near the Creggan part of the city that always fascinated me as a child as we could see it from where we used to play near the city wall in the Bog Side. I had never actually been inside it until a few years back when my sister and I went over to visit our relatives who still live in Derry. We had lots of questions to ask about our grand parents (my grandmother died the day my mother was born so we never knew her) so they took us to visit their graves. It is so beautiful there and so peaceful. I hope to go back again some day to spend more time exploring it. Loved your video and look forward to seeing more.

The Graveyards and cemeteries of Europe are so different from the North American equals, almost every available space is used up there, and the ages of the markers , stone, plaques etc. vary from hundreds of years old to basically brand new. I went back and listened to the sound of the man's voice as you looked in on that tomb with the large circular openings in the door, and I can't make out what he was saying, but I don't think he was happy you were looking in. Sometimes out equipment can catch the voices of those who still reside on Earth, and they usually are not the souls of the departed, but are of those who were cast out of heaven for rebellion. Whether it is by accident or deliberate those sounds usually are not pleasant. I've heard some of them and they are decidedly unpleasant for me.Mostly because I know too much about them to be comfortable. That is why the Lord tells us "Stand ye therefore in holy places and be not moved until the day of the Lord come" because those spirits cannot follow us into holy places, and why we need to make out homes holy and dedicated to the Lord and his Gospel, so it can be a sanctuary for us in this world.

While all the monuments are outstandingly beautiful ,certainly more ornate style ,than I have ever seen in my life before, I am also interested by the paranormal, and the fact that the mausoleum you were looking into had no discernible coffins, yet I too heard the men talking together while you stood there alone. Would there be any chance of you and Irish Eyes visiting it together and asking who was talking etc?
And the grave showing the very ancient skeleton seemed a wee bit strange as he surely wasn’t buried like that! So his remains have been disturbed and the lid left open, maybe he would have a word or two to say about that! Just a thought..not wanting to upset anyone, but you know Spirits still visit their resting places from time to time. Gorgeous video Sue, far too much to include in one go. Some fabulous amounts of money have been spent over the years to pay for such fantastic creations in memory of loved ones.

Oh Sue! Sue! Your driving me crazy with the frustration of not actually being there with you! Your saying out aloud , what I’m thinking! “ oh! Wow! Wow! WOW! Just look at this!!” You may not realise how lucky you are, to be surrounded by such beautiful graves, superb masonry, and the dates! Going back, back, back! How lucky are you! Just soooo very grateful that you share as much as possible with us!.. even some of the little hidden gems of grave yards, quite overgrown, where you have to traipse across muddy fields to get to, just fill me with excitement! One place in particular, overgrown with brambles, making me want to travel over with strimmer ,secateurs, and slasher to get to those 1600s graves…where some lovely person had made their own private pilgrimage leaving holy water and pottery angels on accessible graves, abd wooden owls, wind chimes, gems etc under some boughs, thoroughly fascinated me, and I wanted to join you and Irish Eyes, as you seem to find so many truly beautiful statuary, and such old graves! Here in the U.K. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any so old, or so beautiful. I AM subscribed to your page Sue and can honestly say it’s been one of the best things I’ve done so far this year, and would seriously ask other viewers to subscribe to Sue’s page too. When you think of the miles she has to travel ( petrol costs) research time, making sure she can care for her family during her times out too which is always a problem, and getting special permission to access some of these places. It all takes a lot of her time and wear and tear, plus fuel etc…so please help her if you can. That’s me asking…not Sue bless her.
I wish she could do a raffle or something, the winner getting to spend a day with her.,,that would be fantastic for people as keen as myself and Sue!
Dream on Helen! Sigh! Thankyou again both of you..,Sue, and well trained Irish Eyes, keeping out of shot, but so reassuring knowing he’s with Sue, just in case she twists and ankle or similar. Stay safe, keep doing what you do so brilliantly! Happy Valentines Day next mon 14th!
