St. Michan's Church /ˈmaɪˌkən/ is a Church of Ireland church located in Church Street, Dublin, Ireland. The first Christian chapel on this site dated from 1095, and operated as a Catholic church until the Reformation. The current church dates from 1686, and has served Church of Ireland parishioners in Dublin for more than 300 years. The church is known for its vaults, which contain a number of 'mummified' remains.
Built on the site of an early Norse chapel from 1095, the current structure dates largely from a reconstruction undertaken under William Robinson in 1686,[4] but is still the only parish church on the north side of the Liffey surviving from a Viking foundation.
While the exterior of the church may be unimpressive, the interior boasts some fine woodwork, and an organ (dated 1724) on which Handel is said to have composed his Messiah.
    Vaults/Interments
The vaults of St. Michan's uniquely contain many mummified remains. The walls in the vaults contain limestone, which has kept the air dry, creating ideal conditions for preservation.Among the preserved remains are the 400-year-old body of a nun, a six-and-a-half foot man popularly believed to have been a crusader, a body with its feet and right hand severed, and the Sheares brothers-Henry and John-who took part in the 1798 rebellion. The various holders of the title Earl of Leitrim were also interred here.
    Damage
A number of crypts in the St. Michan's vaults were damaged by vandals in 1996 and again in early 2019.Following the 2019 incident, the church stated that several mummified remains were desecrated by vandals, including the remains of a 400-year-old nun, and the decapitation of the 800-year-old 'crusader'.
    Access
The church vaults are open to tours on Saturdays, and seasonally on some weekdays, receiving approximately 27,000 visitors during 2018. Following the vandalism event in early 2019, these tours were temporarily cancelled.
The tour is well worth a visit not only to hear and see history but to take a very up close view of some amazing caskets and mummy's

BOY!!!! a lot to take in there. First of all, amazing entry, down through the hatch door, you can almost feel yourself going back centuries, then the mummies of course were incredible, especially the crusader, never knew about crossing the feet for the crucifix, that is very enlightening, too bad about the break-in, at least they didn’t ruin everything. The two mummies that flank the crusader remind me of those from Pompeii, the Mount Vesuvius victims. And most interesting to see the ornate decorations on those coffin ends, And all of those written artifacts. Big intrigue is at the death mask. Those are always very spellbinding. Too much to take in and describe, but this is Fantastic, and is my favorite kind of stuff. What a great find, hopefully this episode goes viral, it should!!!

The way I see it, these people are our ancestors. As such, they should be protected and shown the respect you would show your own family. When I heard the Crusader, and the Nun near him were vandalized, it made me feel sick that someone could be so callus and hateful to those that came before us. I suppose the silver lining is that the Crusader's head was recovered and now he rests in a new coffin. Thank you for sharing this visit into St. Michan's Church crypt with us!

That was awesome Sue, and your guide was exceptional! Many years ago ( almost 40 ) I was on a mystery tour with a local bus company; we were taken to Baltimore and given a tour of the church and cemetery where Edgar Allen Poe is buried. We were taken into the catacombs and saw the stacks of bones(?) that were still there, and since we were there on October 30th, we got to see Poe’s bottle of wine, that show’s up mysteriously every year. It was incredible, and I need to read up on these things as it was a LONG time ago.

That was 13 years ago, but I would absolutely swear we had the same guide; his voice was very distinctive. So much so that I had my son watch some of the video. Despite being an overseas Irish, I was still strongly disgusted to hear about that tale of vandalism in 2019 by Marxist thugs. It really made me realize just how far wrong Ireland has gone during my absence. As Europeans, we ought to be deeply proud of the Crusades, about how we stuck our necks out for our brethren while they were being slaughtered on their pilgrimages to the Holy Land. Compare that to today, when we ignore the plight of our Christian brothers who are violently persecuted for their faith in that part of the world. But instead of offering them sanctuary, we take in their persecutors instead. I can only hope that Ireland abandons Marxism and returns to its Christian roots if there is to be any sort of future for us on our beautiful, ancient island.

So very interesting and I Thank You Kindly! As a craftsman I certainly appreciate the detailed work in the making of the coffins. And we ourselves talk about the good old days not realizing we are living within them at this moment. Many Blessings with Joy of Being! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

What a FASCINATING video!! Those stairs scared me just looking at them!! You and Irish Eyes are VERY brave going up and down them!!
Some of those coffins were ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL - SOOOOOO ornately carved!! You can definitely tell their occupants were VERY rich!!
That tour guide should start his own TH-cam channel 'Tales From The Crypt'!! He's VERY good at his job!!
ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS, Sue and Irish Eyes!! Well done!! XXXX

I have visited this Church and the vaults. At the time I was there, we were invited to touch the mummies. Absolutely awesome tour! The Church was beautiful and it was wonderful seeing the organ. It is just awful that people destroy this! There is no purpose for that behavior. Nice video Sue. Thank you.

Yes, that was awesome Sue…we always think previous generations were much smaller in height that us nowadays, as can be see by low door headers abd beams in old cottages still being lived in, so that Crusader must have been quite terrifying to those who saw him at that great height. Did anyone say anything about his heritage, as I believe a number of North African Crusaders had joined the Templars in their travels and search by that time. Well done you with your wee short legs lol, getting down the steps ok, and Irish eyes ready to be there for you to land on if need be..
Those coffins with all the gold decoration were truly beautiful…your camera lights showed them up well. One thing I, and many other fans of yours are now ensured that wherever you have chosen to visit, or go, we will never be disappointed…your beautiful accent tells stories, reads names of loved ones clearly, and unlike Ron! Ahem! Cough, lol…you remember your torch. Even better you have Lovely Irish Eyes to help out and hold torch still for you to read.i did mention in a comment to Ron he could mebbe have used the torch from his mobile if he had one on his? You too if stuck?.
To me the carvings on the gravestones in Ireland are some of the most beautiful and the oldest I’ve ever seen, with rarely any vandalism.
Thankyou for such an interesting change of tempo with this…absolutely fascinating! Love yo you both! Stay safe! Love Helen 🙋‍♀️😘😘💕👏🏻👏🏻🙏🌹🥰😻🙏🙏
