    There was a HUGE amount of cases at the show this year. This was a lot of work to put together with the amount of footage and booth visits we needed, but we're excited to have a condensed look at what's coming up. This is basically a "what we're reviewing the rest of the year" list! Lots of exciting stuff coming out. SUPPORT OUR INDEPENDENT REPORTING! We fund our own plane tickets, hotels, and other travel-related expenses. That's made possible because of your help with purchases from the GN store or donations via Patreon and TH-cam Memberships.

      They missed an opportunity to make it invertible or re-sizable. If they had gone with modular, universal panels, it would have been amazing, but they decided they'd make this a more expensive case with materials and finish instead, deciding that people who want inversion can't have nice things. Also, this was premiered in January and is still not available for purchase and has no price, so yeah...

    Mentioning the Calyos Kickstarter campaign for the Streacom passive case isn't something I expected but it's that next level attention to detail that GN always brings. Loved all of the Computex coverage this year!

      @GamersNexus  ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@vuri3798 not sure why you'd expect anyone else to know about it. It was like 6? 7? years ago. Look how small we were then. We never had physical access or got to see any of that stuff. I don't think I'd ever even heard of it until Streacom. He covered it multiple times, so of course he's aware of it.

    • @vuri3798
      @vuri3798 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@GamersNexus I didn't mean to be offensive sorry if you perceived it that way, but knowing that backers gave them 500 bucks I almost expected this to be the very first thing you'd highlight since I find you to be the most pro-consumer (but fair) channel.
      I was impressed to see how Linus handeld that, I've even seen a french media that backed the project still giving them coverage. A viewer commented "well I gave them 500 bucks back in the day so if I don't buy this one it'd be like I gave them that for free" 💀
      Now sure if you didn't know at that time it is what it is we can't be aware of everything that happens.
      Edit : oh and btw I loved your InWin video that was really interesting thanks for that !

    • @NightFoxXIII
      @NightFoxXIII ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Sirgreen57 - Well there was comments about it on GN’s first look video with the case as well as the WAN show to bring the issue to light since now LTT is at least warning consumers to be “cautiously optimistic” with how bad he felt burned about him and his community.
      There’s a different collab going on but GN was unaware of any of this going on since it was not on their radar at the time and only met them as a new company collab.
      Either way like any of these cases, we’ll see once it comes in physical form and is actually shipping and in stock.

      I'm really fond of that too. It's odd to me that this is such a new concept. The savings on shipping should be a great incentive for any case company. How much are they paying to ship a container full of what are essentially empty boxes? I would think someone undertaking a DIY PC build wouldn't mind putting together an IKEA style computer case if it saved money.

    I saw the montech stuff on a live stream and was pretty impressed, especially with the combo of quality and price. They had some case options that I thought for sure were going to be well over $100 that were closer to $60, and even the ones that were at or over that $100 range, seemed to be cases that other companies would be charging a lot more for. They even talked a lot about just wanting to offer people nice case options at more affordable prices and they seemed to be sincere.

  • @supra107
    @supra107 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    I just recently got the Fractal Design Pop Air, however before that I had a case from 2014 with non-existant airflow so any modern case would've been a major upgrade. Though the stock Fractal fans are weak, I'll need to get more P12's.

    • @GamersNexus
      @GamersNexus  ปีที่แล้ว +22

      The Pop Air is a great case! We liked it in our review. Very compact and functional while still having a unique look.

    • @supra107
      @supra107 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@GamersNexus Yeah, I also like that the USB-C cable is optional so I can pay for it later while a case with proper airflow was my main priority. I'm also thinking about finally getting an M.2 drive and cutting down SATA drives by two, so I can mount my DVD drive back in, or even get a Bluray one. I went with the full black version with metal panels, I wouldn't benefit from glass and I just want my PC to work, not look pretty.
      And those Arctic P12 fans too, right now I've moved the stock Fractal ones as top exhaust and added P12's as front intake, but the Fractal fans just barely move air and I want something that can push more air through while still being fairly cheap and also adjustable via PWM in software to balance input and exhaust under load with a 5 fan configuration. The Fractal fans won't even turn when setting them below 40% in software. I think P12's are a good value choice for case fans even though they're more designed for radiators.
      Needless to say the case change helped immensely, my 1060 in the old case would hit 81C under full load, and in the current case it's 71C under full load. Of course getting a newer GPU is also next in line, maybe a used 3070 to not give Jensen more money while not breaking bank since I want to play around with AI stuff. Unless AMD steps up with support for computing like that on Windows I'll have to stick to the green team.

    Honorable mentions to the Thermaltake Tower 200, Montech K95, and Phantek NV5, as well as just the fact that MATX is finally getting more attention than just "cheap".

      Will this saving be passed on to the consumer?
      "Maybe, in the future, possibly, if we remember and if we feel like it*." (it*= making less profit)
      Would be like IKEA selling a flat pack piece of furniture for the same price as a furniture store selling the same piece of furniture pre-assembled.

      It's a very nice case but it's really huge (full tower, larger than Fractal Torrent probably) and heavy (~15 kg). I wish it was smaller (a bit smaller than the LANCOOL 216). If there is a compact edition coming out, I will buy it immediately as it's the endgame case for me. The Air 3000 Max gave me an idea for a niche case for the market: Plenty of 3.5" hard drive cages, plenty of 5.25" bays, and intake fans on the side panel to compensate for the lack of airflow from the front. You know that data hoarders would absolutely love to have a case like that. Fill it up to the brim with high capacity hard drives, add Bluray, DVD, CD, LTO drives and whatnot, and have a powerful archival rig at their disposal. Maybe Silverstone could do a revival of the RV02 with this concept.

      From what I've seen, people usually use the Automatic Ripping Machine scripts with an (external) stack of drives to cover the batch they have in an efficient manner, then disassemble it. Having the optical drives in forever is rarely needed.
      As for cooling the drives - Define 7 solves it better with a more open 3-point mounting (well, to an extent - it does cause some issues for Toshiba drives), and there's also an older R5 that's halfway there but has more rigid mounting for 5.25" drives.

    Ever since the "lego" Inwin airforce, I've been excited and delighted to see more and more unique-looking, interesting cases, even if most of them are mostly black or white. I especially like seeing cheaper, more styled open bench cases, I like the idea of having an open pc, but most are expensive, hardly styled, and would be better with a bit more framing to help "protect" components a bit more, and full mesh panels provide that well

    Flat-packed cases become interesting if it reduces costs for the consumer in ways that make some of the $2-300 case features available to those with a slightly smaller budget. One feature a DIY assembly case cannot skimp on too much is the strength and thickness of the parts because the manufacturers can't depend overly much on complex bends to hold tinfoil thick elements together. Using screws means the material has to be thick enough for the screws to hold structurally without stripping out the holes easily, and that means they'll have to build them to take the weight of modern cooling components. It probably means a few more "invertable if you want it to be inverted" designs which is also a plus depending on where the machine is going to live.

    Finally more cases that will take 200mm fans! Got a MO-RA3 420 in-progress where I'll be using 8 200mm fans at minimum RPMs because why not. That dual-chamber Morpheus is the one I'm keeping an eye out for; can't remember who, but someone mentioned it can take 6 200mm fans! Very excited for that.
    Speaking of, Steve if you're reading this, would you mind asking Noctua next chance you get if they have plans on updating their 200mm fans? I'm kinda wondering if they see value in doing it, since they're not really popular, but I also feel that's slowly changing what with many cases FINALLY adding more support for 140mm fans since the 40 series exists. I know we won't see it for several years if they do plan on it, but I would just like confirmation that they have an interest in updating the NF-A20 at all. Thanks again for all the videos and enjoy your enjoy your lax time!

    My recent build was in a full size XL case. I feel like I am flying in the face of people who build in micro cases, or even normal size cases.
    However I recently swapped a fan over to another header which is by the CPU fan header.
    Since I was in an XL case I did this easily in the blink of an eye. .. Whereas in my previous normal size case it meant taking skin off my knucles on the CPU cooler. Then finally giving in, and removing the CPU cooling tower from the CPU to access the fan headers.
    Yeah it would work hassle free in a normal size case with a water cooler, to access fan headers. Unless the AIO was mounted in the top of the case, which might cause access problems.
    I love the maintenance space of the XL case, and that is why I chose it. The bigger case means no difference to daily use of the PC, since it is under my desk. ... It also makes my older regular sized case look small and cramped.

    Here's two lesser known cases you should check out. Mostly lesser known because both are only available easily in China.
    First, the MechanicMaster C34Pro. I've built in it, so I already know many of its issues, but the case is really impressive for the size. Looks like a slightly large mITX case (a little bigger than the Asus AP201 prime), uses zero rivets, supports mITX up to EATX, 2x360mm AIO's configuration depending, 4090 GPU's, normal ATX PSU's. Oh and most important to me - inverting it only took moving the feet to what was formerly the top.
    Another case that just looks awesome which I'd love to see an english outlet checkout is the Captain Case V12. Not a ton of info on it, but seems to be fully milled from aluminium, fits ATX and smaller MB, most 4080 and maaaaaybe 4090's with SFX PSU's.

    Oh god, I thought I'd seen the last of the Antec 900. That segment of the video really needs a trigger warning! 😱
    Back in '06 I built a new gaming PC in an Antec P180B, which was a phenomenal case in its day. Sturdy, easy to work on, very quiet, and good enough airflow for high end hardware. That case lasted me through multiple upgrades and two complete rebuilds until I finally retired it in 2020.
    Shortly after that build I helped my roommate build his first gaming PC in an Antec 900. High airflow design, blue LEDs which were all the rage then, popular case on the Tomshardware forums. Plus it's Antec, they make great stuff, amirite?! Wrong. Worst case I've ever had the misfortune of working on. Very flimsy feeling, tedious to work on, noisy, and significantly more expensive than the P180B. We later blew up the 900 with Tannerite because it was such an abomination. And yeah, Antec pretty much faded into irrelevance after that.

    I highly recommend InWin look more into professional wood joining techniques. Mitering looks *much* better than the butt join we see at the top of the Mod Free Mini here, especially given the cut end is not even finished, and it's really easy to do - just cut the ends at a 45 degree angle and put the cuts together to make a nice smooth corner. It masks the joint really well because the visible part is on the edge, so it just blends into the fact that there's an edge there.
    Not sure how they managed to do routed edges without knowing about mitering, because routers are more niche than miter saws (which is honestly the first mounted power tool I'd buy for a workshop, they're so useful), but...I guess I'll give the metalworkers a break - they're used to having to finish edges because an unfinished metal edge will cut you rather badly.
    (And no, I am not a super experienced woodworker, I did a decent amount when I was a kid, and have recently been trying to build some custom shelving, that's about it. It doesn't take an expert to know mitred edges are the easy way to make things look nice.)

    That Darkbase Pro 901 looks pretty nice. I hope they're going to release a juiced down version with less of the fluff at a (much) lower price bracket. I especially like the GPU cable shroud which also seems to function as a support structure (something that's quite handy given how GPUs get bigger and heavier to a degree where extra supports are necessary to prevent damage to GPU and/or motherboard) and I'd like to see this become a more common feature for cases everywhere (also it just makes it look so much cleaner since those GPU cables can be a b*tch to route).

  • @CruelViper88

    I like the Thermaltake CTE, because the 90° rotated Motherboard means I can now hang the massive heavy GPU on his bracket.
    Not putting any stress on the PCI connector, or the GPU PCB.
    Considering the GPU only keep growing in size, weight and cooling demand PC case manufacturers need to consider those GPU's need to be mounted different then before.
    PCI risers needs to become the norm.

    Fun fact to non car nerds: The Ford Model T did not have a water pump in the cooling system and relied entirely on convection of the water through the radiator and engine to keep it cool. I see Streacom took a page from this approach. Heck, if it cooled a 20HP engine why not a PC?

    The somewhat near future of PC design is going to have to be either smaller video cards, or case and motherboard redesigns. Imagine a motherboard with no PCIe slots, just a header for riser cables for perhaps a cube shaped GPU with fans or ducts on 3 sides and routing of the video cables somewhere completely different. Maybe even a riser going to an external GPU mount to be able to show it off and get complete airflow that doesn't radiate inside the case. I haven't built anything since 2018, so there is probably a head start on all that I don't know about.

    Thumbs up for these "self building kit style" cases like the InWin Dubili! Not only is the damaging in shipping of big, heavy cases gone, the consumer also gets a building experience with the case itself! Bravo! With the availability of 3D printers this could be a modding option in the low cost segment!
    Also the uprise of micro ATX is a very cool thing, looking at Thermaltake Tower 200! Not only does a standard PC have less parts theses days (no HDD, no ODD, also no SATA) but the reduction of that footprint on the desk is something even Apple has seen years ago with their Mini. Even for a casual gamer with mainstream hardware a smaller case does make sense these days if the ventilation is not compromised.
    And the shipping and transportation also is easier than with those big, heavy towers of the 2000's.
    Both examples (inWin, Thermaltake) could also include or offer an inverted version though for people having their PC on the left side of the table.

    still wish we could get a gamer version of the Silverstone D1, LOVE the giant size of it, what looks like great airflow, and no glass side panel, only things I'd change is give it a PSU basement, move the front IO to the top of case and put the hot-swaps to the very bottom, what would effectively be the front of the basement.
