The republic commando game includes shielding for katarn armor, but tbh it’s not very lore friendly. The books totally omit shielding from the armor. It makes much more sense that it’s just extremely tough, like beskar.
If only they were able to have man portable droideka level of shield that allows them to shoot within it. Too bad that’s a lot of radiation exposure for a shield that strong
The "Shield" mechanic may jut be representing how armor in SW tends to redistribute energy across the entire plate until the whole thing fails at once and the heat starts to transfer to the inside, or in extreme cases the plate melts down. It would otherwise be the only self-recharging human-sized shield confirmed to not irradiate the wearer. I always thought commandos were cool from that droid commando episode on clone wars, but playing commando on BF 2 really showed me how much of a beast they can be in the right hands
Katarn class commando armor is basically the star wars equivalent to Spartan armor. Onboard shields, an extremely advanced HUD, space for extra ammo explosives and gear modifications. If it wasn't so expensive to produce, this armor would be a must have for special forces even outside of the republic.
@Hmm Meerkat I was expecting Eck to have been sponsored by the developers like other TH-camrs, when watching this video too. Aspyr are really tryin' to get this game out there.
Interestingly, the Republic Commando novels did away with the idea of personal energy shields on Katarn armour, instead writing them as being merely very durable suits. Albeit, with a few vulnerabilities; the earlier marks in particular could be defeated with projectile weapons such as a Verpine shatter gun. I can only assume it was because the shield itself was interpreted as a gameplay mechanic. The DC-17m also got a fourth attachment, the PEP (Pulsed Energy Projectile) laser; a low-grade laser designed to non-lethally incapacitate hostiles, which was described as being like taking a flashbang to the face and a plastoid bullet to the chest at the same time.
Republic Commando got ported to the Switch, recently. If it got a large number of sales, maybe we’ll finally get _Imperial Commando_ It was planned to have Sev survive Kashyyyk, perhaps even sparking the seeds of rebellion against the Empire.
About those shileds, it has to be pointed out that personal shields for humanoids (or most living users), once quite common during KOTOR era, got kind of phased out of use due to blaster technology getting increasingly more potent, which led to the need of having a more powerful energy source for those shields, making them both more costly and unwieldy (and AFAIK even the energy field of the shield itself started to get to levels dangerous to its users inside of that field). And I bet that without the very costly Katarn armour, those troops wouldn't find it very pleasant experience using personal shielding.
The only place we ever seen the energy shields in use is the game. The novels never mention them, and they're *extremely* detailed about equipment. Someone once said games need to pliable to be playable, and I think this is actually an example of that. Of course, it's known that standard clones didn't actually wear ballistic armor, so Katarn could very well be rated against blasters and not just shrapnel. That would certainly explain its exceptionally bulky design
I guess the difference is arc troopers are a more combative form of officer that are competent fighting on their own, where commandos are like a navy seal esque squad of special forces

Yes, Delta team was more professional, however i think the bad batch is supposed to be the republic commando show we never got. Even if they're not 1:1, there's still a comparison that can be made.
Here's the thing: you can't really compare ARC troopers to commandos because they were used for different things. It's shown best in the Republic Commando books. The commandos were used in situations that required a small squad with the ability to do a lot of damage or to raise the locals to rebel vs the CIS or whomever was in control of their world. IE. The first mission Omega squad goes on where they meet Etain. ARCS on the other hand were used for full stealth missions, in and out with out being seen, assassinations or like we read in Republic Commando sabotaging droid factories. The two different mission types meant two different measures of success. Now sure you could use a Commando squad to take out a droid factory but they would do it via explosives or something that would be seen right away vs the ARC trooper who snuck in, changed the composition of the droid armor to be weaker and set the computer to accept that as the new standard. Something not so easily detected.
Food for thought here, if you read the description for the clone commandos in Star Wars battlefront 2 they refer to the commandos as super soldiers I believe kinda solidifying them being the best I’d say in canon those descriptions are canon btw
In the Novels, Niner does the body over thermal det maneuver and saves his squad. The armor stays in tact, and Niner is able to survive (albeit he does get severely injured). But think about it. A trooper on top of a freaking Thermal det. And he survives and still can crack a joke right after.

I think the ARC troopers were better trained and had more individual discretion on conducting operations, but the Commandos got the better kit. In a real-world analogy (not a direct translation), it's like a difference between a Delta Force operator and a squad of Rangers. Both are special forces, but they have entirely different mission sets. The ARC's are more recon (as is show in their name) and infiltration, while the Republic Commando were designed for smaller precision mission but still direct action. I love 'em both, so I'm not here to say this over that. There's plenty of room in the GAR for all flavors of badassery!
@@michaelandreipalon359 Both would be ridiculously expensive. Considering mjolnir armor is basically a Titanium Body Weave Suit and Titanium armor plates, Katarn Armor would likely be easier to make and would be created first.
Definitely Katarn armor. It doesn't have the crazy features of multiplying the user's strength and reaction time and it doesn't require the user to have undergone physical augmentation drugs/surgeries
I love Arc troopers and I consider them the best, but thats simply due to me prioritizing battle field skill. The Arc Troopers - Commandos debate is similar to the Army Rangers - Green Berets debate, in this I stand by the Army rangers and plan to join them one day so its obvious that I would like the Arc troopers that are built very similar to the rangers.
The main difference between ARCs and Commandos is that Commandos were more obedient. The Kaminoans saw the benefit of the ARCs but feared their independence, so they made the Commandos who were highly creative and independent but also obedient and loyal, the contradictory nature of which did wonders for their sanity.

@@wojtek561 I think it actually is the havoc armor. It looks like commando armor and has similarities to the video you sent with the glowing visor, but the midsection just under the chest plate, the right pauldron (our left) and the back pack shape are all directly from the havoc squad armor you can get from the cartel market in TOR. The back pack is the biggest give away since it has the antenna on the right and you can see the thermal detonators lodged in the side of the bottom.
@@wojtek561 It looks more like ToR Republic Trooper Armor. The Armor on the shoulders is more rounded than Clone Commando Armor.
This video was a surprise... but a welcome one
can we bring back star wars starship versus and battle breakdowns even if u dont still love the vids eck keep it up
It looks badass is one reason
3:51 I don't remember it protecting against solid projectiles or wait do you mean the droids ramming you and the geonosian spears?
Can't wait to get into this game, I wished Switch had multiplayer for it.
#askeck How did the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances work differently from the New Republic?
#shipversus Resurgent-class Star Destroyer vs MC85 Star Cruiser
#shipversus Resurgent-class Star Destroyer vs Starhawk-class Battleship
#battlebreakdown Battle of Astarte

“Ordinance? That’s a bloody walker!”
God I love Chipotle chicken
It is said as well that clone commandos didn’t always use the shields that could be attached to the armor
Didn't we had an episode in the early seasons of the Clone Wars, where regulars Clones could survive for bit in space with their armor?
Because it looks sick
I just want a new Republic Commando game on the SWBFII engine. Imagine co-op with that gorgeous Commando model.
And we love the commandos.
The Republic Commando series is great
Facts
Because it looks really cool 😎!
commando armor is the closest thing to Mjolnir armor that Star Wars has, love that shit.
What do you think humans will make first? A suit more like Katarn armour or a suit of mjolnir?
Katarn
I don't know but either would be freaking sick
@@michaelandreipalon359 Both would be ridiculously expensive. Considering mjolnir armor is basically a Titanium Body Weave Suit and Titanium armor plates, Katarn Armor would likely be easier to make and would be created first.
Definitely Katarn armor. It doesn't have the crazy features of multiplying the user's strength and reaction time and it doesn't require the user to have undergone physical augmentation drugs/surgeries
most badass space diaper in the galaxy
I love Arc troopers and I consider them the best, but thats simply due to me prioritizing battle field skill. The Arc Troopers - Commandos debate is similar to the Army Rangers - Green Berets debate, in this I stand by the Army rangers and plan to join them one day so its obvious that I would like the Arc troopers that are built very similar to the rangers.
Is this really a question? We all love this stuff
Clone commanders=green berets
Arc troopers=Rangers
Done
Remember not to test the ballistic capabilities of your armor in the barracks ner vode.
I bet there was a poll for this video that I won’t see until tomorrow.
The main difference between ARCs and Commandos is that Commandos were more obedient. The Kaminoans saw the benefit of the ARCs but feared their independence, so they made the Commandos who were highly creative and independent but also obedient and loyal, the contradictory nature of which did wonders for their sanity.
Have a good day aswell
i would love it too
They call me “the fastest click in the west”
I just noticed that in the bottom left of the intro there is a transparent dog.
what if gregor activated his sheilf and that's why he survived but was a bit cracked out?
#askeck with the release of clone commando for PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, can the events and characters of the fame now be considered canon?
Versus request:
Resurgent vs. Starhawk
Tie Striker vs. New Republic V-Wing
World Devastator vs. Vong Worldship
Tie Silencer vs. X-83 Twintail
Tie Silencer vs. Tie Defender (legends version)
Keldabe vs. ISD II
MC90 vs. Nebula class star destroyer
Nebula class vs. Pellaeon class
Majestic class vs. Bothan Assault Cruiser
Clone Commandos are so epic!
One and only reason: Because it was f***ing cool ?!
If only all clones could have had this armor. Such a sad thing how they were so vulnerable.
I like the thumbnail
maybe ditch the arrow
but that artwork was nice
ARC troopers= Army Rangers
Clone Commandos= Green Berets
