    Nice set up. I agree that the roosters cause so much drama. I have chickens and first had a rooster and it was always drama and he hurt the girls too. I was not interested in raising chicks but for eggs. After he was gone there is peace and they all get along and nobody picking on others. Peace at last. Love your eggs.

      Thanks. I've never had chickens before but heard roosters can be aggressive. I do miss the early morning roo wake up calls.

      It works well. They have a set up at the cabin that works well too, a homemade cage. They bask in the sun.

    The quail play a huge roll on the homestead for us. I would have to say they are more productive than the chicken but they eat a bit more. So in short it is a trade off but very productive one.

    • @TheWildYam
      @TheWildYam  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice to hear from a fellow quail keeper. I find mine don't eat a lot but can waste a fair bit of food. I put just enough for their daily requirements in their dish so they don't flick it all out on the ground. Never had chickens before. What are they like?

      @@TheWildYam Chickens are like a rolling boulder compared to the quail. Just takes more time. I always thought yall had a couple hanging around somewhere.
      A good Chicken to start with is the Silkie.
      Blessings.

      They get a bath daily in their little pans. They don't nest or are that broody. They walk and lay eggs at the same time. However with the little pans on the side of their pens, they will lay eggs I'm the shavings. They just won't sit on them.

    Thanks for the update. You made tough, but right decision about the males. Hopefully they were enjoyed after harvest (which I feel is the most respectful thing to use them for the purpose for which they were produced). Any chance to get a mini chicken tractor set up to let them get some grass/dirt scratching from time to time?

    • @TheWildYam
      @TheWildYam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They were very tasty. I made a set up for them at camp. I need to get wheels for it to roll them around to fertilize the grass.

    • @TheWildYam

      I haven't given them a water bath yet. They love dust bathing and rolling in the shavings. They do that activity daily

  • @chrisblevins755
    @chrisblevins755 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You did the right thing. It's not like you had no intention of raising meat birds, and for the health of the females that was the best decision. I've always believed if you eat meat, you shouldnt turn a blind eye as to where that meat comes from. And if you can't handle that reality, go vegetarian. Respect to you. Great video!

    • @TheWildYam
      @TheWildYam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. I feel you should know where all your food comes from. Raising your own, you know how they are housed, fed and dispatched. Respect for the birds is paramount.

    I like your rabbit hutch setup for your quail. What are the dimensions on it and where did you get it? Thanks.

    • @TheWildYam
      @TheWildYam  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got it in Amazon believe it or not. A rabbit hutch. I mention the dimensions on a previous video about their housing I think. Off the top of my head it is about 4.5 feet by 18" by 2 feet. Dale's quails in the USA sells good set ups.

    • @TheWildYam
      @TheWildYam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi James! I'm doing well. Still waiting on my cardiac ablation. Delays due to staffing issues in getting the procedure done. The eggs are rich. Mostly yolk. The meat is not gamey, darker meat and a bit dry but the way you cook it influences that.

    On your off-grid property, did you get a building license prior to building your home there? Many properties that I see in Ontario say that the township won't issue a building permit.

    • @TheWildYam
      @TheWildYam  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, in my township a permit was needed for the cabin, a hunt camp permit

    • @TheWildYam
      @TheWildYam  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jason, You'll really like them. Easy keepers. Lay eggs 300 days of the year esp if you alter the lighting to 16 hr per day with artificial light. Meat is delicious. Not gamey. I skin my birds so can be a bit dry but faster prep. I cook at 500F for 15 min. You can pluck and cook a bit differently for jucier meat. If you get them and have questions, don't hesitate to reach out.
