I have a 2019 CRV and last week during a blizzard in Toronto, for the first time I had the chance to put the AWD system of the CRV to full test, the results, I am so disappointed that I will change that car, this is my 2ndn CRV, I used to own a 2002 CRV and it was a tank on the snow, never let me stranded, the new CRV got stuck in a similar situation as the diagonal test, there was no way to make the car move and inch, the AWD was keep getting overheat and had to shut down the car, I spend 6 hours stuck until my friend with my old CRV that I sold to him with almost 360 thousands kms, came to recue me, he pulled me out no problem, once the front tire made full contact with the pavement again, the AWD system started to work, it is a weak system, the old CRV with less power went right through the same spot no problem. Shame Honda! (I have brand new winter tires on my CRV, Bridgestone Blizzards, so it was not a matter of tires)
You idiot, this is not for diagonal testing when a tire is hanging in air lol. 99% of AWD systems are made for better traction in snow on regular roads, NOT on off-road trail or trenches when you get wheels spinning in air. smh. You are confusing road crossover made for regular driving on roads with off-road vehicles.

It appears that its TCS logic is pretty inefficient in that very scenario. Spinning wheels are braked but without concertation on where traction is. That performance appears no better than what was seen around 2010 for that class of SUV.
This is one of the best real world tests for car buyers to watch. IDK how Honda watches this video and says "Yup, we nailed it." I'd be embarrassed if l was a Honda engineer watching this.
Cuz they focus on other aspects of the car that the buyers will care about not this. 99.9% of CRV drivers will never need to do this and yet it still can do it, look at the Nissan Pathfinder its advertised as an off road vehicle and failed this test. Lots of vehicles fail these tests, new Dodge Hornet fails this test too.

Didn’t the 2017 one do much better? I haven’t watched it in a while but I don’t remember it putting up as much of a struggle as this one. I wouldn’t go as far as to say Honda should put iVTM-4 in it (although it would be nice) but they need to update and fix their AWD. This has been an ongoing issue

I drive on the beach all the time with my Outback and the CRV is the #1 stuck vehicle. The system is terrible, honda knows it but doesn't care because most people will never experience its failures. It's sad to see the disappointment on people's faces when they do.
This vehicle is basically meant to be a accord “hatchback” with ground clearance -like you said good for snow. If you want more “off-roading” -they offer the passport $$$

This is kind of called off road testing. CR-V real time AWD is only for level roads like rain, snow, gravel and maybe mud. The early 2000s CR-V would have done better?
I would bet money if you stopped feathering the throttle and letting off it would just go right up that. If you listen to the audio, when you stay on the throttle it goes over. Regardless, do another test with just giving it the juice.

It depends on which year of the RDX. Some older (2nd gen) 3:11 RDXes were the same platform and drivetrain as the CRV but the newest gen RDXes use SHAWD / iVTM systems that are better than the “real time AWD” the CRV uses.
Yes. Agree that you should bring other SUV to test together to make a difference. Mazda, Nissan And all within the same range. Is not fair to just watching one model to be test.
Hey guys, can be a difference with the model sold outside USA/Canada? Here in New Zealand I took for a test drive the 2019 model and I did same test on grass. It passed the test with less struggle than yours. And def it was pretty similar angle lifting a lot the wheels
@@CarQuestion , no need for video. I'm a Kiwi and let me say we have the worst roads in a developed country--in the world. Colorado might be the Subaru state, but NZ's the Subaru country. That's not a compliment--to our roads. 4WD vehicles are a necessity, here.
@@CarQuestion I don't have the video with me. I can check with my brother if he still has part of the video we did. I'm quite surprised for the bad job it does, when my experience was better. We even tried in the same spot of the CR-V, the RAV4 Adventure, and it was bad. The Honda had more spin, but it climbed, the RAV4 it couldn't because of the exhaust was scratching too bad, and it was a demo car from a dealership, so we didn't want to damage it, plus the AWD didn't inspire confidence (in the RAV4)

Maybe I'm wrong but looks like he did it intentionally, so why not turn to right and forward when it starts to spin? If you are on of road trail doing it off course your are not going anywhere. Also the tires get no grip enough ( asphalt tires), looks like a combination of mistakes and that way you will go to dead end. The real test is with someone who is doing it on real situation, not asphalt with little sllipering rocks. Sorry but for me didn't say anything.
@@rv2167 yes pilot and passport awd system is much more superior than crv. Passport and pilot has i vtm4 which is a variable torque management that sends power to the wheels that needed it. On the other hand crv only has an average awd system designed to save fuel it is mainly fwd but if it senses traction loss sends a little power to the rear wheels and with also the help of traction control. I said little power to the rear wheels because it does really send too little that it doesn't help at all.

Those tires suck! For those who actually drive these off road, you have to disable VSA for some situations. In these tests, the AWD was clearly working fine, but the tires couldn't grip worth crap. I don't know what tires are on it, but I'd get something different lol.

This is the max you’ll get to see in a simple plain old AWD. It takes a while for the computers to calculate the slippage and then push the non slip wheel to accelerate. This ain’t a SH-AWD, 4Matic, xdrive or a quattro. For those you’ll be paying almost double the price. A Range Rover series is something else altogether. A slightly better full time AWD would be a Subaru but I doubt if you’ll be able to have the same driving fun as a Honda or a Toyota. So again, Honda AWD is primarily a FWD and switches to AWD when needed but that’s all a marketing gimmick. Lastly, I really doubt if anyone knowingly will be taking a CRV for an off road drive and do all these stunts unless they are really stupid!
Guys look at the RPM which is under 3000, what car in the world can overcome an obstacle with this RPM? Why can't the driver push the accelerator at least up to 4000 RPM? CVT needs little higher RPM's to deliver some power! That's why this car struggles.
@@CarQuestion l have been using the same vehicle for years, got lots of experience with the car off road etc. TCS never limits RPM, 100% sure on that since i have been using it with both TCS ON and OFF. This is not a good car for off road activities, no doubt on that. But this huddle is nothing for the car if you push it little far.
@@yz1235 Cant be too much cost for them to do it since they already have the awd hardware. It might be one thing if the Passports awd system was new, but it not as it is found on the Pilot, Ridgeline, Passport, and the awd Acura models. Honda would be super smart to add it to the CRV. Even Subaru has found a way to fit their same awd on all their vehicles.

Just got stuck on my snowy driveway. With left front wheel spinning like crazy, the other 3 was doing nothing.

You either buy a German, Subaru, electric AWD, or Jeep 4WD. Otherwise, you’re just paying extra for nothing and letting dealers deceive you.

This is the max you’ll get to see in a simple plain old AWD. It takes a while for the computers to calculate the slippage and then push the non slip wheel to accelerate. This ain’t a SH-AWD, 4Matic, xdrive or a quattro. For those you’ll be paying almost double the price. A Range Rover series is something else altogether. A slightly better full time AWD would be a Subaru but I doubt if you’ll be able to have the same driving fun as a Honda or a Toyota. So again, Honda AWD is primarily a FWD and switches to AWD when needed but that’s all a marketing gimmick. Lastly, I really doubt if anyone knowingly will be taking a CRV for an off road drive and do all these stunts unless they are really stupid!

Guys look at the RPM which is under 3000, what car in the world can overcome an obstacle with this RPM? Why can't the driver push the accelerator at least up to 4000 RPM? CVT needs little higher RPM's to deliver some power! That's why this car struggles.

Can’t you read the desc... tcs maintain the rpm there. Not the driver .....
@@CarQuestion l have been using the same vehicle for years, got lots of experience with the car off road etc. TCS never limits RPM, 100% sure on that since i have been using it with both TCS ON and OFF. This is not a good car for off road activities, no doubt on that. But this huddle is nothing for the car if you push it little far.
Yes it’s tcs that restrain. Cause if you turn it of. It’s a smoke show and rev limiter is quickly reach. It’s what happen in that situation.
The 2.4 liter LX performance is a million times better 🙄

@@yz1235 Cant be too much cost for them to do it since they already have the awd hardware. It might be one thing if the Passports awd system was new, but it not as it is found on the Pilot, Ridgeline, Passport, and the awd Acura models. Honda would be super smart to add it to the CRV. Even Subaru has found a way to fit their same awd on all their vehicles.

@@tonychau1983 They are already paying 1400 for and, what's another 600. Besides Honda would probably be saving money by focusing development on one system as opposed to multiple systems. That should provide savings to enable them to offer it for the same price they are already.
@@niuhuskieguy you'd be surprised how many people would walk away from a additional 500 bucks. And besides for 99% of the people the system they have now is fine no one is going to do this is real life and no one is going go to take it off roading.
Why wont honda just do right be the consumer and make a "all time 4wd" come on. Theres really no benefits of a half working 4wd system. Just make the diff lockable
