Max Tech Hi..does it make sense to buy he Basic 27" iMac ($1799) instead of the next two above it and buy (if possible) from Apple the SSD Drive ($100) and 8 Core Processor ($400) ??
I really have a lot of pictures (tens of thousands) and growing but am using my original 2009 24" base iMac and need something faster to do my job (creating ebay and other online listings of antique items).I just need faster performance. Thanks for your help.

Lol i'm using 8 gb baseline.. + external ssd 256.. The most mistake is one thing.. MACOS memory hungry and keep compressing the memory hopping it will re use again the worst idea at all. Either 4 GB ram or 8 GB ram or 16 GB ram doesn't matter in catalina because it will hog em all. I have macbook pro 2011 16 gb which been upgraded from 4, imac base 2017 , ex sales mac mini 2014 baseline. My Conclusion compare to linux and windows , mac pretty bad ram management.

Great video! Just ordered my top of the line 27”
iMac and can’t wait to get it, did the i9, Vega 48, and 512 GB SSD, also I did the stock 8 GB of RAM because I purchased an extra 32 from Amazon and saved hundreds.

Palak Khanna So pretty hilarious, I placed an order a couple weeks ago for a new iMac 27” but several times had to cancel the order because I realized I made a mistake with the spec like not getting the SSD or Vega 48 and also not getting 8 GB of RAM so I can upgrade later. Well I must’ve freaked the system out because I had to wait for it to reset due to me using the education store and since placing my current order July 30th, I saw today my order was on hold and contacted support. To my surprise I found that my build has been upgraded to the new 10 core processor, Radeon Pro 5700, and my at the time upgraded 512 GB SSD is now standard so my order price actually goes down. I must have an iMac guardian angel or something 😅

I have a 2010 mac book pro. In 2012 I had to upgrade the harddisk and I went for a fusion drive 750GB. It still works, never had a single complain about that. I needed a LOT of space storage in order to bootcamp the macbook pro (I didn't want to use Parrallel or similia). That has been a very good choice for me. It worked fine and clear since then. Just my personal experience tho. Have a nice day everyone

I’m on a serious budget...so i got the 2017 iMac... it’s the 3.4ghz model that comes with a fusion drive - i got it for £966 reduced from £1449...the fusion drive doesnt bother me because if i need to work with a faster drive i can use a portable SSD drive...8gb ram isn’t much but i dont have the space for a 27” iMac and as it’s the 2017 model there wasn’t an upgrade option...I’m still very happy to have a 4K iMac for under £1000

Would it be worth while to get a used iMac 2017 and then an eGPU with the savings? Perhaps a Radeon 5700 with Razor Core X? Will the loss of 2 CPU cores be a huge difference?

  • @PabloSeoane
    @PabloSeoane 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I've never had any type of issue with the 3TB Fusion Drive iMac at work, so I went ahead with all of these video's tips and purchased my own 27" iMac with 1TB FD. I know SSD are faster but the difference (at least on my workflow) is minimal, and to be honest my past MacBook Pro had a fast 240GB SSD and it bothered me every single time it filled up the space in it (backing up files can get tedious, trust me).
The best advice from myself and this video is to NOT get an Apple-direct RAM upgrade, instead, get it from elsewhere (only applies to the 27" model, for the back door DIY upgrade).

This is very sound advice. Apple plays very strange games with their order configuration, so your video is mandatory watching for prospective Mac buyers. I’m on my 20th Mac since the 80s and learned the hard way. It takes a bit of research time to figure out, but there is usually a sensible Apple purchase and it is virtually never complete as sold. OWC will even credit a little bit for your Apple RAM when you upgrade with them.

I am looking to get either a Mini OR an iMac for my Music Workstation. I use a lot of software instruments, hence the high RAM and hyper-threading needed .
    I already own :
    PC tower (5th gen i5 5600 with 32Gb RAM & 960GTX GPU),
that i use for 3d CAD & some photo editing
    AND an
iPad Pro 12.9" for the main Photo Editing tasks.
    TWO questions :
    1. Should i go for the :
    -> 6 core i7 Mac Mini , 512SSD and 64GB RAM aftermarket
    -> 6 core i5 iMac with 580X GPU , 512GB SSD and the same 64GB RAM aftermarket
    2. do you guys edit photos with the iMac .. or prefer some other device, like the iPad Pro ?
(i often watch your videos.. but i confess i don't remember)
    Thanks again !

Excellent video! If money is not a huge deciding factor, but one wants the best gaming experience with a Mac (90% of my work is on a Mac, but I do like bootcamp for the occasional gaming session!), is iMac suped up the way to go, or iMac Pro with the upgraded graphics? My concern is the chip differences you helpfully highlighted.

Last month I bought the iMac Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019 with 3.7Hz 6-Core with no customization from Best Buy. It was $70 less than Apple store ($2229), plus I got 10% ($220 of coupons) because at the same time I applied for a Best Buy Visa and put the charge on the card.
Instead of buying memory from Crucial or OWC and paying $388, after reading some reviews I bought Adamanta 64GB memory upgrade for $285 at Amazon and it is working perfectly well!
The fusion drive is also working very fast and smoothly. After all, this model has 128GB SSD drive besides the 2TB HDD (total of 2.12 TB)

Thanks for this video. How responsive is the trackpad? And the mouse? I have problems with precise gestures and strength because I am physically disabled. Can the iMac be controlled entirely by voice?
I'm considering an iMac or Macbook Air for my needs. I'm a writer and blogger (I have 10 novel drafts since 2013) and am a book reviewer. I use Wordpress, Goodreads, and also search the internet generally. I have some iBooks and PDFs within my iBooks app and I also use the Kindle app as I get review copies of books from publishers. I require accessibility features (VoiceOver screen reader and dictation as well as Siri) because I have physical and visual disabilities. I still have my iPad 2 (2011) but I cannot update it at all (apps or IOS). I review various books weekly and am working towards publishing some of my novels. I also like to use TH-cam and watch movies online. I'm considering the iMac 4K (2019) or the 5K. one or the 2020 Macbook Air. Which configurations should I get to meet my needs?

The base $1099 imac is a great machine for almost everybody other than people who make videos and do some gaming. You're not going to notice any difference using that slightly faster ram or that 8th gen processor when your browsing the internet, writing an email, sending out job applications or watching netflix and that's what 90% of us use our computers for.

Also, since GPU can not be updated having the best possible option is better future proofing of macOS performance

    3.7GHz 6-core 9th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.6GHz / 8GB RAM / 1TB SSD
with Radeon Pro Vega 48 with 8GB of HBM2 memory
Which one is the best choice ?
I'm going to upgrade Ram by myself later in both options as you mentioned in your video.
    So basically I'm confuse between (3.6GHz 8-core & Radeon Pro Vega 48)
    Thanks

    Thanks for doing this.
I went with 16gb ssds to make 64 gb - more than enough and leave the 8 gbs out

Outstanding video! I have been thinking of upgrading from my 2012 27 inch iMac with a 3TB Fusion drive. If it dies, I will use this video as my guide to order my new iMac. However the 2012 is still going strong. I hope to wait till a new design comes out for the iMac. Hopefully when it does, you will make a video exactly like this to guide my purchase!

I just bought the 21.5” iMac 4K and was extremely disappointed with how slow it was. I returned it today. What would you suggest I get. I do some photography editing, excel, email, TH-cam etc. Don’t need much, but I cannot stand slow machines. I want something to be fast. Thanks for any help.

Get the base model 27" 5K iMac but with an SSD for storage, not a hard drive.
Then buy 32GB of RAM using the link in the description. Swap it out yourself.
That will be perfect for you.

Is there any noticeable difference between the Radeon Pro 560x 4GB and the Radeon Pro 570x 4GB? I'm not a gamer (expect for my occasional spiral into The Sims), but I use things like Illustrator, Procreate, maintain websites on Squarespace, and may start lightly editing video again (not sure if any of that is graphics related).

The 21.7 inch has intel core i7 and more turbo boost for much less than the 27 inch with i5 and less turbo boost (but without the ram door). So how important is Ram?
I’m using my computer for music recording (protools) and don’t want latency issues...

Really helpful video my friend! Thank you very much!.. I wonder if you can give me a hand about my decision. This is the iMac that I want:
    3.6GHz 8-core 9th-generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz
    8GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory
Radeon Pro Vega 48 with 8GB of HBM2 memory
    3TB Fusion Drive storage
    3250 dollars
Did I get it right? Really appreciate your help, it’s a lot of money..
    Blessings!

I need some info about the imac 27inch 5K 2019 hard disk upgrade. Because of financial limitations I can purchase the default 2TB fusion drive or 512 GB SSD. My aim is to upgrade to at least 1 TB SSD in the future. I learned that authorized technical services can change the hard disk without breaking the guarentee. As I learned there is only a common hard disk slot for either fusion drive or ssd flash. So my question is how should I configure my imac at the beginning to upgrade to at least 1 TB SSD in the future, just to lose less money. Technical service says that if I buy 2TB Fusion two possibilities occur: in the first case may 2 TB fusion drive may be physically combined each other as HDD + SSD = Fusion Drive ( 128 GB SSD and the rest HDD ) In this case any modification is not possible.(as I heard )
In the second case my fusion drive may consist of 2 seperate parts which work together. ( SSD 128 GB + the rest HDD again ) In this case technical service says that it's possible to remove the hdd part which slows down the computer, and change it with an SSD flash drive. However if I purchase the product with the default 2GB Fusion drive it's not certain that with which combination they hand over the product. As I understand I have the risk of lodging in a fusion drive without any hope to upgrade to an SSD... Who ever knows further information about the subject please do not avoid to mention as a comment. Thanks for helping.

Great Video, It was to be much earlier. okay, done the mistake no.2. I bought iMac with 6 core i5 and 580x graphic card. it is very slow when some larger projects are to be done. I did the ram upgrade upto 24 gb (8+16) . Can I upgrade the fusion drive with 1tb SSD, is this could be done within warranty.

Hey Max! Thank you for your video. I,m a little bit confused. which option is better to choose for graphic and motion design - imac i5 / 3,1 ghz 6-core / 8gb ram / 256 ssd / radeon 575x (2019)
    or i5 / 3,7 ghz 6-core / 8gb ram / 2tb fusion / radeon 580x (2019) and probably add ssd latter ?

Seems like the 3.7 i5 wasn't much faster than the 3.1 i5. Likely not worth the $300? Or was this particular test (Geekbench?) not indicative of the overall difference in performance?

You guys are lucky to have options, where I live we just the 3 i5 options and no upgrades the “higher” end with 3.7 ghz and 8 gig video card is over a 1000.00 extra over the base model. Not to mention no T2 chip for better H265 video editing...
