Earlier on he was gone for a full season because Trey Parker and Matt Stone were planning on keeping kenny dead forever, even trying to replace him with tweek and butters. Also creating the character professor Chaos. But the fans did not like the fact they had killed Kenny like that. so they ended up bringing him back for a reboot episode. And since then, kenny has not died EVER episode.
