  • Today we're taking a more in-depth look at Virginia Opossums with our newly-named Wildlife Ambassador opossum, Luna.
    Watch her enjoy her lunch, and learn why these marsupials are so valuable to our yards and neighborhoods.

    People are wrongly afraid of these sweet, gentle, shy creatures. They are harmless, good to have around. I have been feeding one or two opossums for the past two years and I am sad to hear that their lifespan is so short. They are just sweet, shy little things. They are so funny when they eat grapes. I hear them CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP. i wish they were not afraid of me. I like to watch and listen to them eat. They are so funny. They do have such an acute sense of smell.. I forgot to put out their grapes one evening and they were scritching around the plastic bag asking for their nightly treats.

    I am an Opossum rehabber and this is an excellent presentation. Thank you for raising awareness of these amazing animals. I have an opossum ambassador in my home who had no fear of people whatsoever to an absolute fault and as a result, Cooper shares a living space with a French bulldog. ❤ Thank you so much and good job! Luna is stunningly beautiful ❤🎉🎉

    I've had so me many wild oppsumes try to hide and live in the house with me. In old days in 1940's 1950's when screen doors were not as much people would talk about how oppsumes would try and live in the house with u many of them if they could. There like dogs and cats, they want to get out and explore like our own human kids and ourselves but they want to come back in many of them. They are needy creatures. And yes they do smile like people ya'll doing a great job there

    I have a possum (opossum) named Mars… I also had his brother who’s name is Jupiter but male possums don’t get along with each other so once they were about a year old I had to give up Jupiter to an animal rescue. But they had both been habituated to humans when I got them which is why I kept them (and still have Mars). I’ve taken care of other possums so I know what is required to keep and care for them. They do belong in the wild so its definitely best to bring them to a possum rehabilitation center if found. But I thought Luna was a great name cause mine is Mars.

    I have always heard that the name opossum in the native language means white face, which fits the animal better since they almost always have a white face but the body is usually gray in color.

    They LOVE dry cat food. They also are quick when grooming. Fun to watch. I can always tell when one comes into my garage. They stink in the wild due to what they eat. And leave smelly poop next to the cat's litter box.

    I have two possum's. Bella followed everywhere. Smurf had gotten about 8" long. I was 2am standing on my patio wren l felt her going around me and l said your home. There smart she was as tame as Bella l had 4 months. She didn't have the balanced diet with all the vitamins so her eyes buldged out on the sides looking a little creepy if you don't love animals. Possums don't play dead they faint they're scared of everything! I Released 7 with nestling boxes.

    I rasied many oppsumes but I never made a ambassador thing. I kept a few of them because they loved me and humans and more the marrier because like babies they loved the attention from people getting held by strangers pictures taken with them everything about attention so they didn't go to the wild. Some just love to be babied. But a lot of wild animals rasied loves and wants to stay were they are loved and babied.

    Thank you for not allowing this opossum not to become obese. Make sure she gets enough protein. If you haven't already, you should treat her aggressively for parasites. They are intelligent but mainly in terms of remembering where things are in their ranges. They don't live more than a few years if captive .... Very short lived for size. Make no mistake, they carry a heavy parasite load.

    • @whalesong999
      @whalesong999 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes. When I lived in the Ozarks, I raised a few orphaned opossums as well as treating some adults who came my way for fleas, lice, and internal worms. Some would come back and show that they were blooming from the care, their fur and skin getting much healthier. Never had a problem with diet since they're omnivores and liked their diet of cat kibble, some grapes, apple and banana bits. They took to "litter training" easily and had the run of the house after a few days of being caged. They prosper with freedom to roam, caging became depressive in what I saw.

    its too bad they dont live very long they would make cool pets, and i think they are nocturnal so locking it in a cage at night could go either way, either it will adapt to being in a cage at night or it will be a little distressed, since it's natural instincts would be suppressed by locking it in a cage at night when it is most active and wants to prowl around all night like in the wild ?

    These animal arent pets and if time people dont feed them proper.
    90% feed to many sweet fruits (grapes) , meat not with bones ,not insects how beatles crickets worms , they overfeed with eggs and one day chicks,so that they would crosseyed and sick, her tails getting big ,her ears flopping foreward and later became neurological tics or MBD😔
    (Eggs and chicks are good but not every day ,than they are to highcholesterol .
    Snails and mices are very good,too
