I know this is an old video, i have this gun that my father left to me and thank you for the video this helps. I just about came out of my seat while you let the gun before you took it apart to sit on the bench while your hands kept hitting it while you spoke. Not hating, i just would have placed it on a towel or something. Great explanation of breaking it down thank you. I use this gun for deer hunting every year.

You saved my life! Pulled the wrong pin on my son's 44 carbine when I was cleaning it and it was the pin that holds the trigger in instead of the one that drops the trigger group. 2 gunsmith would not touch it to put it back together. Watched this and said I can probably do this. Had to rewind it multiple times to get it pulled down and put together but I got it! Thanks!

I love that it looks so much like a 10/22, people are shocked when they find out it's a .44 Magnum. I wish it had a higher capacity magazine, but it's still a super fun gun to shoot. I had two, a standard one that was a little rough and an RS (the peep sight model) in beautiful condition, I sold the standard one to my friend and he fell in love.

Great guns! Light and quick, I've carefully harvested several deer with it over the years. The 44 mag is PLENTY to procure venison! Leaves a nice drain hole. 😄 Good luck getting all of that back together. Much respect.

I remember the first time I took mine apart. I took one look at that trigger group and thought, "ain't no way in hell I'm taking that apart because there ain't no way in hell I'll ever get it back together".

If the trigger assemble is working properly why take it apart? Throw the complete assemble in an ultra-sonic cleaner or clean manually/inspect/lubricate move on to the next assemble? The other parts clean/repair as needed/inspect/lube/assemble separately. So as to not confuse parts. Just thoughts for the inexperienced.
Your video will help many from chasing springs/parts shot across the floor. Having left over parts, etc. Excellent rifle the Ruger 44 carbine.
    Nice job Amigo.
    Peace from Texas

My first one, which was stolen and still hasn't been recovered, leaded up when I shot the only commercial .44 ammo I could find through it - the Winchester SWC which had the Luballoy coating on the bullets. I had to tear it down and de-lead the whole gas system. I found another one in an estate sale I was hired to prep for sale and took it in trade. In the intervening years since my first DeerStalker, I became a handloader, bullet caster and powder-coater and police/military armorer. I have avoided using lead bullets in the current .44 and in my other gas guns after trusting some copper-washed .30 Carbine bullets and having to de-solder the gas system in an M1 Carbine. I've powder-coated some appropriate weight .44 bullets of a shape that feeds in my .44, but have heard about PC fouling the gas systems of other gas guns and remain a bit leery of running these through my Ruger. I use them regularly in three other .44 rifles; a 788, a Handi-Rifle and a B92, not to mention a variety of revolvers, and I haven't had any PC fouling with any of them.
Question for readers: should I try the PC'd bullets in my DeerStalker? Otherwise, I'm stuck loading only jacketed bullets for it. That's fine for hunting, but I take my guns out and warm 'em up pretty regularly and the kind of field shooting I do eats up a lot of ammo, so cast bullets are a lot more affordable. If I try this and it works out, I'll test PC in the .30 carbine, and then the M5 .308 and the Garand.

    • @UndertheGun
      @UndertheGun  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Dont know about PC, but you can get plated bullets much cheaper than jacketed.

Thanks for trigger disassembly video! I bought one of these rifle a couple years ago. The first time I shot it was the last. The trigger pull had to be eight plus pounds. After I watched your video this morning I took mine apart, stoned and polished the trigger group and it now brakes at a crisp 64 oz. It’s so crisp it feels closer to 3 lbs than 4. You were right, the springs were a little challenging to put back along with trying to figure out where the inner part of the springs tuck under. Thanks again!

Just stumbled across this post. Thanks a ton for the info. I recently acquired a 1976 edition. I have no history on it other than it was loaded when I acquired it from a family member. I seem to recall having issues unloading it but I was a bit freaked out having found it in that state so I don't really remember, unfortunately. I bought some Zoom snap caps recently and couldn't get them to load properly. The round gets hung up at an angle and gets jammed up when trying to load the round. I broke the gun down, except the trigger group, per your video, and cleaned everything I could get to. Reassembled and same result. I measured the snap caps and noticed they are about .03" shorter than Remington .44mag ammo that I bought hoping to go shoot this thing. I don't want to try to load live ammo here at home. If I load a round directly it ejects perfectly.
Any thoughts on worn-out springs or other areas that might cause failures to load?

Thank you for the video! I have had one of these for about 35 years, my grandfather found it in a pawnshop and my dad bought it for me for a hundred bucks. Pretty sure it has never been taken apart. Then again, I've only shot about 50 rounds through it (sad, I know) and last time it was fired was about 30 years ago. It was stored at my dad's house for about 25 years while I was in college and then the Navy. Getting back into guns now and plan to take it to the range.
Should I break it down and clean everything first?
Or just give it a "whatever I can reach" cleaning/lubiing and take it to the range, then give it a deep clean breakdown after?
Thanks again for the video! Well done.

Wow.... Thanks for this video. I'm pretty much a nube but I've got one of these and I'm always interested in how any firearm really breaks down and works. Got to say this makes me really want to avoid this breakdown unless it is really required. That said.... is there any real reason - beside something straight up being broken - that I should even consider a tear down this far for this rifle? It works fine so I don't think I've got any lead/ gas feed issues.... Can I stick to just the basic cleaning and file this video away in the 'worst case' file?? Thanks again for the great video. Really easy to follow. Makes me think of a few tools I should get/ make myself too.

Do you have any suggestions on ways the solve this problem next time I take it apart. Thank you

Would you know why mine only holds 3 rounds in its magazine tube? And my trigger won't go the first time but after I let my finger off it and engage it again the shot goes off with a surprise no feel to the trigger at all, and it won't cycle a new round often or mostly catching the empty case in the action Sum-Times sideways

Mine won’t feed the next round occasionally, but I’d hate to have it happen when a deer walks out. Running 240 grain soft point Winchester white box. I feel like maybe the mag tube wasn’t seated correctly. Anyway, I’ll try it this weekend and see what I get.

It does cycle manually. I think either the mag tube wasn’t seated properly (the little unload button wasn’t really letting the cartridges pop out) or the gas adjustment screw needs to be tightened. I did a cleaning and the unload button works now. I’ll test this weekend.
I appreciate your video. Thanks for doing it. Not a lot out there on this gun. I have to ask, in the manual it doesn’t seem clear how far to actually disassemble the weapon for regular cleaning. In one section it talks about just removing it from the stock for a basic “field strip”. Then later it describes taking it down more, basically removing the trigger assembly and bolt. Not as far as you go though.
What is needed for a cleaning for this weapon? Seems like you should go all the way to at least taking the bolt out, but it seems like the manual and a lot of people only take it out of the stock and I guess just clean it and oil it like that. Any advice?
