Best rifle I have hunted with and still in use today. Remington 742 30-06 carbine with 18” barrel. Got it new sometime in the late 70’s I think. The gun has performed without any issues. Getting about time to pass it down to my grandson. Thanks Remington 👍👍👍.
742's. I 've prolly owned a dozen or so in the past ,would not recommend owning one today. I applaud you for correctly listing the fallacies of this rifle. I do love the 760 pump series though and kept a mint LH example. They made diff versions ADL, BDL, And BDL deluxe, and some black diamonds of both the semis and pumps. Ruger 44's , owner a few, early ones said DEERSTALKER on them ,some fingergroove and mannlicher. Kept one that would stack up Rem green box 240Jhp's in a little cluster at 100 yds. . Great woods gun, took several nice bucks with it. Used it to graduate my son up from a 10/22 to bigger game. He took his first buck with it.I don't use it anymore ,has an old redfield wideview 3x9. I kept chaps on it so stock is nice. It is worth a good price these days ,might be time to let someone else enjoy it. Cheers!
Had both rifles, back then did not use a scope on either. The 742 was a carbine in 06,both great stalking rifles, loved them both.Took my share of deer with both.
This is a very useful video. I have a Remington 740 Woodsmaster carbine in .30-06 in like new condition. It was my father's deer rifle and after he sighted it in any cartridge he considered not used to take a deer wasted so I have most of his only box of ammo. He had a Remington 552 Speedmaster .22 that took shorts, longs and long rifle. I have that now too. My first .22 was a Ruger 10/22. I also have a Ruger M44 with a Redfield 2.75x tube which is my utility carbine and companion to my S&W model 69 .44 combat magnum revolver. I like that it does not have a detachable magazine so i can just top up the tube, where the cartridges are safe in the forestock.
My first deer hunting rifle was a 1976 Ruger .44 Magnum Carbine. It was a good hunting rifle for upstate New York in the Catskills. I own a Remington 742 BDL Custom Deluxe with the hump receiver. It is in 30-06, I purchased it from a gun shop a few years ago. The gun store owner told me the original owner came in with this rifle and only used the rifle on opening day only. He had the case and box of Remington 180 grain Corelokt with a price of $9.75 from Edelmans. I believe the ammunition was from the early 80’s. The rifle purchased new in 1970. He had a Quick Site mount. No scope on it as the Gun store obviously took it off to sell it. The rifle was never cleaned except the bore and the exterior of the rifle. The trigger group was removed and it was all brown and gunked up. I thoroughly cleaned the rifle. I installed a Leupold Vari X II 2-7 scope. I purchased a new box of Federal Fusion 150 grain ammunition. I tried the old Remington ammunition first to get me on paper. I was only an inch to my left after a 3 shot group. I decided to use the old Corelokt ammunition for deer hunting. I harvested a Big 6 point Buck at 100 yards. Dropped dead in its tracks. I also have a Remington 7600 pump to hunt in Pennsylvania. Great deer hunting rifle. You still see many deer hunters using the Remington 742 as they were handed down to family.
Great video looks the trigger fired in the upward position wirh hammer up.assuming it's the same procedure putting it back into the reciever ..can't wait to.pick up.mine today from the gun store
DR Drake . Those are some great old school Deer hunting rifles. I have a 742 in 308 in the similar configuration. It's a once and a while I take it out hunting rifle it groups well . I just don't want to muck it up.
Good content and very helpful buddy, thank you. I inherited a ruger 44 and it needs a good cleaning and polishing but honestly this one was a little intimidating because alot of oldschool rifles have alot of stuff going on in them usually but this video really helped me understand this one much more
I have both and love them both. We’ll actually I have the first generation 740 Woodsmaster in 30-06. My 740 though is basically a single shot because it usually stove pipes whenever I shoot at a deer. It never seems to jam at the range, only when I am hunting! Anyway, It’s now a safe queen along with my 44 carbine. My 44 Carbine has the same rectangular Redfield? scope on it as yours. My only gripe with the 44 carbine is the tube magazine. I wish it had a detachable box magazine which is far easier to load and unload. I now hunt with my Ruger Mini Thirty which has just that. But in terms of reliability, my 44 carbine has never jammed. I wish Remington would make a new semiautomatic hunting rifle. There aren’t many semiautomatic options these days. Browning still makes the BAR but that’s about it other than tactical guns lie ARs and AKs. Thanks for the video.
What beautiful rifles! I have a Remington Nylon 66 ( .22 long rifle ) for which I really need a whole stock. I have searched all over here in Canada, and cannot find one. This was given to me back in the very early 1960`s as a gift, from a dear friend. I sure wish I could find a stock for this one. Mine`s the black stock with white diamonds inlaid, and the tube magazine feeds through the butt up to the receiver.
Reg Sparkes I don't know how strict Canadian gun laws are, but I know they aren't great. Keep that rifle hidden and well oiled! Stockpile some .22 ammo, it's easy, and pull it out when everything goes to hell. The .22lr is a extremely versatile cartridge.
Hi Dave. Have you had the opportunity to put it through the paces yet or shot it and if do what are your thoughts thus far? Any reliability issues and how is the accuracy at 50 and 100? Looking for handy little thumper for deer.
I commented 10 days ago, and respectfully again. you didn't remove the gas piston and comment about how important it is to be clean, and not overly lubricated which can affect recycling. Nice video though.
My 742 is running smoothly and the chamber is nice and clean so shells eject with authority. I took off my scope and am just running iron sites. I use it for deer , elk, moose. I just zero it in and hunt and i doubt ill use a box of 20 bullets a season so mine will run alot longer.
I use a 44 ruger carbine for pushing bush with the hounds and I wouldn’t ever give it up. I shoot a 358 Winchester on anything above that. I’ll talk ballistics all day with 30/06 compared to 358 Winchester with same bullet weight.... short action 358 trumps 30/06 any day
Beautiful rifles.....I have long sold my .30-.06 rifles except for my old bolt action Milsurps.... .30-.06 ammo or now reloading in 2022 is expensive and although it's an excellent round I now prefer .308 if using a .30 cal projectile.... Main reason it's a short action receiver, ammo cheaper n .308 is slightly less FPS than an .06 so that's just me.... Always liked that rifle in .44 mag good for states needed a straight wall round but would rather have a bolt or lever action cause many states don't even let ya use a semi for hunting....smh...... be well..
Ricky Ramírez 18.5” barrel I don’t consider barrel length and size of the man to correlate too much. I mean, in terms of a brush gun, I just want something that’s easy to navigate with and light weight. Size and weight wise kind of reminds me of a marlin 336 lever action
I have been told that Ruger will no longer support or service the Ruger Model 44 carbine. To me that is an insult to the customers who forked over their hard earned cash for this rifle and tells me Ruger will not stand behind their products. It tells me what Ruger management thinks of their customers. I currently have 5 Ruger products and have had others in the past. I will never purchase another Ruger product. All Ruger owners should send a message to Ruger management and do the same.
Dude they haven’t made that rifle in almost 30 years. They probably don’t even have parts to service it anymore. Just because they aren’t going to service a rifle that has been out of production for 30 years doesn’t mean they don’t stand behind their products. It would cost probably triple the amount to service it than what it cost to buy it new when it was in production. Any gunsmith can service them. You may be one of those a little bit on the too sensitive side.
Sorry but bastardization of terms makes me crazy; it shows ignorance and/or illiteracy, especially when assuming authority on a topic. It's not 30 "ODD" 6, it's 30 'AUGHT' 6 (30.06) (sometimes pronounced 'ott' or 'aht', which is how it gets bastardized to 'odd'.) Our language is DE-volving along with everything else these days, which is why things like this that seem insignificant to most people, are important, IF we are to E-volve.

Great video being from Maine I grew up with these guns at hunting camp both were fantastic in the deer woods this video brought back memories thanks
Growing up, that's what my dad and I hunted with. He had the 742 in 30-06 and I had the Ruger 44 Carbine!

Love the see thru mounts. Underrated.
My buddy still uses the 44 Ruger that he purchased a long time back. He loves it
Had a chance to buy one of these. Still kicking myself for it. That Ruger 44 is a sweet little rifle.

Ruger - We stop making the firearms you love, and make the ones somebody will probably buy.

Remove the gas piston ( don’t have to remove the roll pins ) then use a pipe cleaner to clean both holes in the gas block .
Good content and very helpful buddy, thank you. Great vid!
Wow those are beautiful 🤩
I was hoping you would remove the piston and clean it throughly. Good video.
Very very nice rifles would love to have both my friend great review keep them great rifle reviews coming my friend
I grew up in Ilion in the shadow of Remington. But I love my Rugers.
Hi Dave. Have you had the opportunity to put it through the paces yet or shot it and if do what are your thoughts thus far? Any reliability issues and how is the accuracy at 50 and 100?
Looking for handy little thumper for deer.
Meaning the Ruger .
Great video thank you for sharing!👍🏾😀❤️🇺🇸
Never seen a 44 that dirty . I have 2 of them & early models had steel butt plates
I'd really like to have that scope, I'm in talks trying to get a Ruger Deerstalker.
I commented 10 days ago, and respectfully again. you didn't remove the gas piston and comment about how important it is to be clean, and not overly lubricated which can affect recycling. Nice video though.
On the woodsmaster you are missing the dust cover.
My 742 is running smoothly and the chamber is nice and clean so shells eject with authority. I took off my scope and am just running iron sites. I use it for deer , elk, moose. I just zero it in and hunt and i doubt ill use a box of 20 bullets a season so mine will run alot longer.
That Ruger would make a dandy walkabout woods gun.
I use a 44 ruger carbine for pushing bush with the hounds and I wouldn’t ever give it up. I shoot a 358 Winchester on anything above that. I’ll talk ballistics all day with 30/06 compared to 358 Winchester with same bullet weight.... short action 358 trumps 30/06 any day
The 358 is a great round. Too bad it’s so darn expensive though!
Very nice! thank you !
Get you some mounts and rings and put that redfield on the 44
One of the few remintons rifles id like to own for a food price. Wouldnt shoot it muxh too pretty

Really liking this!
Great vid, DR! How long is the carbine rifle? Isn’t it to short for guys like us? I think you are about 6’ plus around 240lbs?
Ricky Ramírez 18.5” barrel

David Drake Understood! Thanks for keeping it real with the Q&A’s.
I Have A Rem 742 In 30/ 06 I Got New For $160.

Would you sell that scope ?
Adam Yvarra nope
And It Looks Just Like That Rifle You Have And I Didn't Even Shoot A Box Of AMMO True It I Shot One Deer With It And Never Shot It Again.
