I've been using retinol all over my face since the first big lockdown with no issues around the eyes.

I did. When I moved to 1% retinol, my skin tolerated it well, so I started using it around the eyes as well. Few months later, I'm having really really dry eyes and discomfort. Went to the ophthalmologist, chronic dry eye, and surface of the eye temporarily damaged. Said I needed to use eye drops for life.
Just as a precaution I stopped using the retinol around the eyes, and surprise surprise, my eyes are much better. The eye drops helped of course, but they are just a temporary fix, the effect only lasts some hours. And now, even if I don't use them, my eyes still aren't as dry as before.
I still would like to try again to use the retinol 😅 just out of curiosity, to make sure it really was causing my dry eye

Optometrist here 👋I appreciate the very unbiased take on this as I find dermatologists on social media typically err on the side of "there's no evidence that it affects meibomian glands/ dry eye, therefore it means you shouldn't worry about using retinoid around your eyes"
Some patients do find great relief when they stop using their retinoids/retinol products around their eyes (anecdotally), but there are other changes I would recommend first when it comes to cosmetics or skin care. I think far higher up on my list is to 1) never tightline the eyes, 2) practise good eyelid hygiene (e.g., hypochlorous acid sprays, using approved eyelid cleansers and always removing all your makeup) and 3) avoiding formaldehyde/formaldehyde derivatives and other ocular surface-irritating ingredients in cosmetics... to name a few.

I've been using topical retinol and tretinoin for around 3 years before i developed MGD. Ive used it near the eyes too, as I was obsessed with antiaging. At first i didnt even know where it came from, i didnt know the correlation as my simptoms affected mainly 1 eye. Mgd made me stop using contact lenses, I felt discomfort in any dry environment, it lead to depression... Please dont make the same mistake. Always protect the eyes, dont put retinols anywhere near the eyes if you dont have to. Fighting these little wrinkles is not worth putting our most precious sense organ into risk! Thank you for addressing this, I was really frustrated by all the videos about retinol around the eyes just repeating that it's totally okay for the SKIN around the eye - yes, but what about my actual EYES? The few opthalmologist videos on the topic are counseling against it and say the damage with long term use could be irreversible, so as much as I would love to, I decided not to use retinol in the eye area because I'd rather have wrinkles than suffer form dry eyes...

THANK YOU for this video. As a dry eye sufferer, it's been incredibly frustrating trying to navigate what could affect my eyes. I don't produce enough tears and I have MGD. It's definitely an untapped market for skincare/cosmetics for dry eye people. I went a few years without having issues and then when I started getting better with my skincare routine and using sunscreen more frequently especially around the eyes I have gone down a deep hole of uncomfortable eyes. there's a whole list out there of ingredients we're supposed to stay away from. When I asked my dry eye specialist, he didn't have any recommendations on what to use. Just basically stay clear of anything. So the dermatologists won't recommend anything because they aren't eye specialist and eye specialists won't recommend anything because they aren't dermatologists. You can see where there is a major disconnect. And I can tell you using retinol (at all not just around the eyes) is definitely a hot topic in the dry eye communities to stay clear of! I don't put anything on my eyelids now. I'll use cleanser, but no moisturizer and no sunscreen. If I get a flare up because of a product, it pretty ruins my whole day. My eyes ache and then I start to get a pretty bad headache. Just overall it's such a headache and again super frustrating! Anyhow it would be a nice change to have dry eyes discussed more in skincare. :)

I cannot use physical sunscreens on my face as they travel into the eye area. There are no eye lash serums I can use. I also beware of eye shadows that contain talc. Thank you Dr. Dray for mentioning the preservatives n eye drops as potential irritants. AND the trend to "tight line" with eyeliner is not healthy. I do put my tretinoin near my crows feet and am not overly cautious about applying my other serums and moisturizers around my eye area after I apply it.

Great topic today. As someone who has been using Tretinoin since my early 20s for adult acne, I was advised by a very savvy dermatologist to never stop using it, only in pregnancy and nursing.
I'm 63, abd do use it under my eyes, but not to my lash line. I have dry eyes from both aging and Sjogrens. I use Restasis and a preservative free saline eye drop and a gel at night. My ophthalmologist knows that I put the Tretinoin under my eyes and around my crows feet. She's fine with it. Aging definitely plays a big part in getting dry eyes. By the time I was in my 40s, I could no longer wear my contact lenses. But, I have very few wrinkles, and that's good enough for me. I think most people use too much Retin-A. A pea size amount is all that's needed. I follow up with a facial moisturizer and put it around my eyes as well. 😊💖

I also use eye drops. Will be switching to drops with methylcellulose specifically, from what I've researched, that's the best ingredient to avoid dry eyes. I learned the hard way, getting ret in my eye, which watered and spread lol. Thank you for your tip about using a pea sized amount.

I did two treatments of accutane at age 13 and then again at age 15, (7 months each) this has completely destroyed the oil glands in my eyes. Now every time I try to use retinol even if I completely avoid the eye area, use vaseline etc it still migrates into my eyes. I even tried using a sleep mask along with the vaseline and it moved during the night and my eyes were tomato red and painful for the next two days. Accutane is vitamin A and it disrupts oil production in the skin (and eyes) that's why it works for acne, retinol is essentially the same thing in topical form so even if there aren't any studies proving this I think it's safe to assume that if gets into your eyes it will disrupt the oil glands in your eyes as well ... I still have yet to find a way to use retinol without feeling like I poured tabasco sauce into my eyeballs, worst part about all of this is that I'm now 29 and I still have just as much acne as when I was a teenager, so now I've got the eyes of an 80 year old granny for basically no good reason ... Maybe I'm just unlucky but I thought I would share my personal experience anyway.

I used to apply adapalene directly onto my face after cleansing, and then apply a thick moisturizer; what I didn’t realize was that I was smearing some leftover adapalene from my fingers and face onto my lids. So lesson learned: apply petroleum to lids and moisture your neck first before applying adapalene!

ever since i started using retinol eye creams i FEEL like my eyes have been dryer when i wear contacts (not that often). i read somewhere in the past that it thins your skin around your eyes as well. i’m not sure how accurate or what degree it is to, but i’ve been only using my retinol eye creams 2-3x a week. completely axing it out of my process led to milia and return of fine lines.
Disclaimer: i wear contacts occasionally and part of my experience may have been placebo until this video. Dr Dray makes good points.

This is confusing to me. If Retinyl palmitate is a retinol and there are so many recommendations not to use it under the eyes, or it will cause dry eye, it blows me away, that that same Products would be used in the eye to help dry eyes. This is so confusing and I wish something Dr Dray could address as I’m about to start tretinoin, and use a Mac eye cream that they just reformulated and added Retinyl Palmitate to, so I’m afraid to use it, but then, if that ingredient is put in an ointment to treat dry eye disease, it really leaves me stumped.

I've had issues with those meibomian glands most of my life. Warned several times by ophthalmologists who didn't tell me what to do about it. (Probably as a result of living in Florida - 'fungus among us'). Just 4 months ago I found out about a lid cleansing product ( Sterilid) that has hypocholorous acid in it. Eyelids feel much better and seems to have improved my dry eye problem. Fingers crossed.
For people who purchase it, it smells like bleach but it does not irritate the eye.

This is a fascinating topic to me as “dry eye” issues popped up suddenly during pandemic when I started tretinoin. Overnight, my eyes became bright red. Since I’ve used only preservative free drops( after years of preservative contact lens drops) and I’m using your tip to put Vaseline or cerave ointment around my eyes at night. No doubt after slathering on my skincare, it migrates to my eyes during sleep. Thank you, for updating us.

I have been using tretinoin 0.05 for 4 years now and apply it a bit lower than my eyebrow (avoiding my eye lid) and then down around my eye just below the lower lash line. It had made my fine lines disappear but the biggest difference for me was that my eyelids which started to droop a bit lifted back up completely. No side effects, bit of dryness in the beginning but that went away.

  • @JNWG79

I have terribly dry eyes and I also use tretinoin on both my upper and lower eyelids (avoiding getting too terribly close to the waterline, of course!). In my case, my very dry eyes began years before my tretinoin use and I wouldn’t say it’s gotten worse from the tret, so I haven’t considered changing my routine. I feel lucky that my eyes have always tolerated tretinoin really well (neck is another story 😩), and my eyes are the area I feel most needs the anti-aging. For those who actually experience dry eye as a direct result of retinoid use, I imagine they should definitely consider the correlation because dry eye disease is truly MISERABLE.

Thank you so much for addressing this. I have acne, rosacea and dry eye disease (meibomian gland dysfunction). Using tretinoin (even avoiding the eye area) seemed to make my symptoms worse. Differin is not as irritating and doesn't migrate as much around my face, so I tolerate it much better. I also took Accutane about 25 years ago which could have contributed to the development of dry eye disease for me. My opthamologist was not concerned about me using retinoid topicals, but warned against using Accutane. My current dermatologist recommended that I do Accutane again in my 40s but I likely won't due to the dry eye concerns associated with it. It's very unpleasant and my eyes are often red at work where the air is very dry, which makes me feel very self-conscious. As if acne and rosacea weren't bad enough!

I was so confused when I developed mgd after using tretinoin - my eye Dr. didn’t know much about retinoids and I couldn’t find much good solid evidence in literature or anywhere online about the link. After watching this video I think the mgd may have had more to do with my hormones and other risk factors than the tretinoin. Looking forward to more research coming out about the topic. For now, I think I will resume using the tretinoin conservatively but only in the morning (I think it migrates more at night since I’m a side/ stomach sleeper) and with a Vaseline barrier. I am hearing through different threads online that several people have supposedly seen research that it can affect the fat content on your face. My dark circles were lilac before I started tretinoin, from bad blood flow I assume. Haven't noticed any more dry eyes, but I don't have a problem with that in the first place. My opinion is that people want a scapegoat, as usual.
We have to remember that tretinoin has been used for more than 50 years. We should've seen a uprise in dry eye problems by now, even if it's something that's not really researched on. As medical archives are always there.

I saw an ophthalmologist for a cleaning and eye drops but no link to the retinol but an additional eyelid cleaner after double cleansing makeup. It's better but I still have dry eyes, but I think it's my screen time that caused it. My derm on the other hand told me to stop the retinol but I've been slowly doing it again with no issues. I also was originally using it on the top of my eyelids which was not smart... idk why. I am certainly not doing that now. Ive had a certain degree of meibomian gland dysfunction for most of my life that's caused quite a few problems for me over the years. I used to get a lot of styes, and around 10 years ago had one that left me with a blockage on my lower right lid, which went mostly unnoticed until about a year later when it had turned into a chalazion and needed to be excised. That surgery was honestly one of the most terrifying experiences of my life, and unfortunately left me with scar tissue on about a quarter inch section of my inner lid, which has completely destroyed or severely limited the meibomian gland function in that area. My right eye has felt noticeably drier than my left eye ever since, and I have to use moisturizing eye drops most days. It's especially annoying since I wear contact lenses, and live in the dry Colorado climate. I actually started using a meibomian gland expresser tool, after applying a warm compress to my eyes, once every week or so to ensure that the glands are flowing/ help prevent future blockages, and it's made a big difference!

I LOVE when Dr Dray hearts my comments 🤗 lol, seriously though, anyone with persistent styes/chalazion/blocked meibomian glands... Talk to your doctor/opthalmologist or optometrist about your options! The opthalmologist that removed my chalazion recommended that I apply a warm compress "frequently" to prevent "excess material from calcifying," and I've had multiple optometrists/opthalmologists suggest trying a meibomian gland expresser tool (there are some that look like tweezers or forceps with a blunt end, and others that look flat, more like a popsicle stick... Both have their pros and cons), provided I use them with CAUTION, and both pieces of advice have made a HUGE difference in the comfort and appearance of my eyes, as well as seemingly in my tear film quality

I just started using oil based retinol with 0,5 % concentration also around my eyes since thats were I also have fine lines but noticed that they get really dry. I dont talk about the skin but actually inside my eyes which I never had before. I will stop using it directly around my eyes, maybe replace it with a specific eye retinol, retinal which is milder and see if it gets better.

It's so great Dr Dray that you Talk about this subject in detail, cause there is so little info on youtoube about it, it's so much apretiated. I've used only till this day, cause of budget, the ordynary retinols, up to the 1% and i toletated perfectly around eyes. At first maybe a little redness in eyelids, nothing serious that didn't resolve just backing up a bit and mosturizing consistently ,i tolerate perfectly fine. I'm gonna try the geek and gorgeous retinal, very afordible too, and see how that goes..... Thanks lot!🌻🦋✨

Oh, I haven't watched yet but I sure hope it's still okay to use a little bit of the Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair under the eyes or around the eyes. You mentioned that in a video long ago and that's what I've been doing, no irritation! Hope you're having a great Tuesday, hope everyone is having a great Tuesday!😊 okay, I just finished watching and I've never had any irritation with the Neutrogena around the eyes and I don't go close to the Lash line at all and rarely put anything on the upper eyelids or actually I avoid the upper eyelids and maybe the skin above that I might put a little on it. I see my eye doctor yearly and actually have no problems with dry eyes that can't be explained like leaving the ceiling fan on all night blowing down on my face. I would be concerned about any effects it could have on vision, however.

I've used rapid wrinkle repair around my eyes 4x now and every following day my eyes are so irritated and itchy. Lesson learned now. Thanks

I use a retinoid around my eyes, and I have dry eye syndrome. I can’t say that the retinoid caused the dry eye issue, as I’m uncertain when I developed the problem in relation to when I started using retinoids around my eyes.
I will say that I do have rosacea, which was diagnosed long after the dry eye syndrome started.
