Coastal Cliff Walk at MANGAWHAI + Sculptureum (Sculpture Walk) in Matakana, Auckland | NEW ZEALAND

- Mangawhai is a just a short drive north of Auckland city. It's nestled between beautiful rolling farmlands and the pacific coast.
On our way to the Mangawhai cliff walk, we stopped off first at Mangawhai Tavern to fuel up on some delicious food. This casual dining spot in Mangawhai overlooks the water and has a great menu filled with fabulous mixed cuisines. Excellent place to eat if you're in the area!

After getting some food in our bellies, we headed out to Mangawhai Heads to attempt the cliff walk there. We struggled for a bit to actually find where to start the Mangawhai cliff walk but we eventually found our way by walking along the beach and asking people if we were on the right track! Thankfully we were. Stunning coastal views and a really cool beach too. It was such a scenic and enjoyable walk. We hope our video helps others find the place easier too!
After our coastal cliff walk, we headed back to the car to look for our Airbnb. Little did we know that it was super close by and literally right next to the beach! The accommodation had an incredible ridge top view overlooking the surf beach and our host was really lovely. We even made friends with a couple of cute canines too on the property.

The next day we made our way back to Auckland but we stopped off in Matakana along the way as we wanted to visit a place we found called Sculptureum. We read great reviews about their art gallery and gardens as well as the restaurant that's there called Rothko. We absolutely loved our meals at Rothko and would happily go back to Matakana just for the dining alone!
The sculpture walk and gardens at Sculptureum was also a really awesome way to spend a peaceful afternoon. They feature 750 works of art from around the world in an impressive private indoor and outdoor gallery. It was a wonderfully unique and captivating experience. We didn't even know where all the time went as we were enjoying our stroll so much!

Sculptureum is open Thu - Sun 11am - 5pm
Rothko is open Thu - Sun 11.30am - 3pm but on Fridays they're also open for drinks / bar snacks from 4pm - 7pm and Saturdays dinner is 5pm - 8pm.

NZ has a ton of amazing beaches but this one was super cool with the rocks and the pretty mixed black and white sand 😍
I just googled the Matakana Sculptureum....and after viewing the photos I think I could seriously contemplate moving back to NZ so that I could secretly live there without no one knowing....my family are more than welcome to come but I feel if I mention it to them they might think I'm crazy and have me locked up...hahaha. The Sculptureum....your right Peter, I didn't think NZ had galleries like that ( but I'm glad it does ). I am completely in Awe with it. ( the polar bear with it's ice enclosure is awesome )

Wow....I lost count on how many times I watched this video...but really Peter...the lamb shank!...bro your killing me....although that Mangawhai tavern burger ( diverse menu ) Yen had with the crispy bacon & melted cheese - and the Rothko fish'n'chips with the sound of the crunch when Yen took a bite of the battered fish - they both looked extremely delicious, but I feel they will always come 2nd along side that damn lamb shank, ( the potato chips I was eating during this all of a sudden started to taste like garden leaves & twigs. lol ). Guy's any art or anything associated with it I love, so when you did the art gallery/sculpture walk I was completely immersed in it...I don't know what else to say except that its definitely on my bucket list - thanks for showing me that one Peter & Yen......Damn you Lamb Shanks!.
Hahahaha Tooks I was thinking about you as the lamb shank arrived to when I sliced open that first tender piece of meat 🍖 to when I took the first bite and experienced those heavenly flavors. Yup Tooks would really enjoy this too was my thought 😂 def need to do this bucket list item such a gem 💎

hi yo guys what can i say ? another amazing place, i think i could spend six months there as that was my kinda place, just love these not so well known places that are not on the main back packers trail. and yes that food did look good and considering the sort of place that it was it actually was not over expensive, an amazing bnb also at a reasonable price. glad to see you both looking so well and thanks for lifting my day . you both take care yeah , waiting in anticipation for the next one haha

The matakana sculptuereum was just a gem 💎 of a find in New Zealand didn't even know about it. N you're right it is quite a fancy place but the meal was reasonably priced 😍 and delicious 🤤 we are both doing well, venturing out a bit more now that things are more under control. How are you going over there in the UK?
I had a huge grin on my face watching you at the Sculptureum. I worked for Council in resource consenting back when the owners were starting the project and was involved in granting their first consent application. The last time I was on the property there was nothing but a plan on paper, and I love seeing that it turned out even better than was imagined! I really have to visit and see the final product ....and try the lamb!

Starting with Mushroom burger is amazing! mushroom is one of our most fav veggie, wow that bacon looks super crispy. Nice play guys, we love that kinda place to stay where the backyard is huge and sea view right from it.

Yeah 2 hours is decent Peter - i saw a track 6 hours - we were like yeah nope 😵 dont want to be stuck when the sun sets 😩 - lol 5 min already into some peak 🤣🤣 (you found nick and helmi’s preferred tracks)
😂 the longest track we've done is the tongariro national park day walk which was 8 hours of tough slog. 😁 yeah one is enough beautiful but very tiring. You guys should try it 😂

Yen scared of the many stairs? don't lie, I know you're excited to workout haha!! Getting lost is part of the adventure! Love the beach and the formation of the rocks! If Peter says lots of stairs, he really mean LOTS of stairs for us! The view is AMAZING!! Lol yes typical amazing NZ views! Love the doggies!!! Really lovely accommodation you guys have there! Waking up to NZ view, it's crazy! I would totally pay for that stay!
The beach ⛱ was so unique cause of all the clean white rocks everywhere with the interesting patterns sprinkled with some colorful rocks too. Hahaha yes that's true new adventures thanks to being lost 😄 imagine waking up to crashing waves every morning that would be the best 😍

Oh wow, I spent a lot of my childhood growing up in Mangawhai! This video bought back many many happy memories for me, and a little sadness as Mangawhai has become so built up. It doesn't have the same feeling as it used to. Still a beautiful place though and will always hold a special place in my heart. Glad you enjoyed yourselves!
We're glad it was able to bring back some memories for you 😊 there are so many mega Bach mansions there 😅 must be the getaway destination of choice. The area is still beautiful and raw though and its nice to be able to stay at an airbnb right next to the ocean 😍
great tips :) Just returned from Waitawa Regional Park (near Duder) and thought it could make a good travel Vlog... Wild scenery, bike/walking trails and a really good oyster restaurant.

Awesome that you went to the Sculptureum. Have been thinking about going there for a while and it looks amazing. There's another place up that way called Gibbs Farm which is supposed to be absolutely spectacular. Think it's only open to the public one weekend a year and is almost impossible to get tickets to. Some real unexpected gems in New Zealand eh.
Yes! Gibbs farm o my gosh we've been on a 3 month waiting list to go there hahahaha in November I think we can finally get our tickets 🎟 😄 definitely check out the sculptuereum when you can it was extremely impressive 👌

😁 our old apartment had a prism theme going on and it would have gone perfect with the theme and the color palette in there 🤔 in hindsight it was a good decision not getting the $12,000 dog 😅

Matakana was really awesome. The airbnb had the most amazing view and so close to the beach ⛱ good memories. We ended up bringing the family back to see the sculptures and eat there again for yen's birthday 🎂 it was 🔥

The whole place was really well maintained and looked after. We chatted with one of the gardeners there and they had a tough time after a recent flood plus the lockdown proof earlier in the year when no one was allowed to work there but they've done such an amazing job and the place was beautiful. Very immersive! 💕💕

Snakes and mountain lions! 😮 Sounds so dangerous! I remember reading a news article about how a guy got attacked by a mountain lion while out on a run and survived to tell the tale! The Airbnb was awesome. Such a great view ay 🙂 def gotta check Rothko out next time you guys are back in NZ 😁👍

I had never heard of a mushroom burger before, great views from that hike plus those surfers looked like they caught some great waves. It's been such a long time since I've had lamb.

Yea it's always awesome running into our amazing supporters whenever we're out and about! ❤️ Still surprises us whenever it happens and especially when we're in small towns! 💕💕 Man we're ridiculous with directions 😅 thank goodness for friendly locals that we could ask to find our way lol. Natalie has such a fantastic Airbnb spot and the 2 doggies were adorable just wanting to play all the time 🙂 the gardens and sculptures were so cool ay. A captivating and immersive experience especially if you like art and gardens! 🌳🎨👍

Just looked up that cliffs walk in Google Maps and there is a link to the DOC website with a detailed map showing the Mangawhai Cliffs Walkway.
😅 we were trying to look that up on the day too but unfortunately there isn't any data from the beach.
Cool! Another high quality volg, I really like the light green rock by the sea. Have you tried local Māori traditional dinner? Fifteen years ago there's famous study shown that the local Māori people eat quite raw meat dinner, so light cooked that causes their teeth issues. I am a bit surprised to see the bone-in meat Peter ordered for his lunch actually was very fully cooked. Have to say so well done :).

We had a trip to Matakana shortly after the first lockdown. Food at Rothko was fabulous. Sadly, the outdoor sculpture garden was closed to public at that time for maintenance. The little creek behind the Matakana village is also amazing. 🤗
O no bummer about the outdoor garden being closed. We heard from the gardener that after the first lockdown it was in pretty beat up shape cause no one was allowed to work then. Thanks for the recommendation the little creek sounds awesome will visit there next time we're feasting at Rothko 😁👌
