I like that the community is getting in there and cleaning up, not waiting for the "authorities" to come in and sort it out. Despite the huge damage, glad no people were killed. Hope the injured lady gets all the help and support she needs.
We are only about 1.5 hours from Mangawhai. The rain was heavy and we got thunder and lightning at about 3 am, but thankfully not a powerful Tornado. The power of the tornado is unbelievable. Thankful the lady sucked out of her bed is going to be OK. What a nightmare
Levin had one houses were damaged but PRAISE GOD NO PEOPLE FEEL DEEPLY FOR THAT LADY WHO WAS HURT AND PRAY A GENTLE QUICK RECOVERY FOR HER HER DAD SAID SHE HAS BROKEN BONES MUST HAVE BEEN TERRIFYING TO HER AND SO MANY OTHERS IN MANGAWHAI OUR PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU ALL 🙏🏻🙏🏻👍💖💖💖💖2021or 22 tornado in our neighborhood swept through streets behind us missed us with no damage but others lost roofs windows fences outside. Damage yeah it happens in NZ Hopefully stays infrequent !! 👌IN 1950S H B PLUS TIDAL WAVE NOW CALLED TSUNAMI IN NAPIER OUR Wattle. There was multiple mini tornado’s in Fraser Town three years ago. Out of the blue stuff. Fortunately no body hurt. Trees and power poles rip out. Tornado’s happen.
Was watching this stormy weather come in on the maps, was wondering why there was no warning or watches issued, since it seemed like it was looking really bad - I guess Metservice did not think it would hit or would not be as bad as it was.
Sad to hear this happened up home. I just know you all will get it back on track 💪 Look at you all keeping it together❤Stay strong, thinking of you all!!
Questions have to be asked about the build quality. I think 120km winds is bad but it happens often Europe during storms and the houses are left standing with little to no damage, maybe the odd roof tile is missing.
that 120km/h is just what was recorded during the full thunderstorm. but if it was a tornado id bet it was probably closer to 200 in the core of the funnel just looking by the damage
A tornado Vs a storm are very different animals. A tornado of a similar windspeed to a storm is more destructive due to the localisation of the pressure differences, and the rotational component and updrafts create more flying debris, which in turn creates more damage.
NZ is a windy country being small island in the middle of a large ocean we get a lot of strong winds. The tin roofs are better for earthquakes as they’re lighter than tiles.
@ Ever hear of Italy? They have earthquakes there and the houses are more solid than N.Z. Just something I noticed. Its same in the US very poor construction with cheaper materials.
we cold take a page outta tornado alley in teh states how to be prepared besides sire alerts or basic knowing of being away from outta walls and being in teh center of ya home, besides basements, But What will it take for us to wise up that these are serious. Hope everyone is Doing ok at least lucky no one was killed.
Kiwi communities don't wait, we start the clean up instead of waiting💪 Night Tornadoes are truly a horror to experience, no warning just a slowly growing rumbling and suddenly everything is getting obliterated.
No, a tornado's devastation is not 'like a warzone.' Comparing Mother Nature's fury to humanity's greed-fuelled conquests is like calling chaos 'tactical.' One demands respect for our fragile, broken planet; the other demands we stop breaking it further.

So sorry to hear this. I hope the injured woman has lots of support TWO broken arms must be awful! Arohanui Tina.
I am speechless! That no one was killed, is a miracle! My prayers go out to you all affected! ❤❤
We will always have to be ready and just be there for each other.. sending prayers to those were hit by this and be strong.
Speedy Recovery, Mangawhai... Praying for you 🙏🏾🙏🏾

Can we PLEASE stop describing destruction as "It's like a warzone"?
No, it looks like a tornado ripped through the town.
I remember 30 years ago a tornado was preposterous… not anymore
Climate change is real.
Horrible. Keep supporting each other like you are folks. ❤
😮😮 A tornado in NZ? Omg I hope they're ok
They happen every year now
Ain’t the first. There was one in Ōtara last year

europe builds differently because of no earthquakes like here. lighter materials are required. and the climate 'was' so much milder...

Sad to see in Mangawhai❤
Never know what life throws at you
Yea even for garden sheds

That's sad...
If only the climate would stay static this would never happen
That's why trees should be maintained
Does the NZ government have a met weather service to warn residents of events like this?
Glad no-one was hurt.
Omg..scary asf

Look at the rain radar in the leed up
That looks like Kansas USA NZ seems to be following in its tornado path
So sad to hear this. Let us extend a helping hand.
We had a tornado in Waitara.
Doesn't usually happen up there.
