If I'm not mistaken, the song that Angela referred to as having been pulled from "Mame" in Philadelphia -- "Love Is Only Love" -- was later used by Jerry Herman in the 1969 film of "Hello, Dolly!", where Barbra Streisand gave it a lovely cover. Incidentally, anyone who's interested in a good look at Ina Claire -- the actress on whom Angela said she modelled her characterization of Mame -- should watch the 1939 film classic "Ninotchka", with Greta Garbo. Claire plays the Grand Duchess Swana, a woman as elegant and sophisticated as Mame, but far less pleasant. By the way, kudos to Angela, and everyone else in "Mame", for not using body mikes. Ethel Merman, quite rightly, despised them. "Honey, if you can't project back to row ZZ, and make them understand every last word, you don't belong on a Broadway stage." I do a great deal of acting in regional and community theater, and I HATE them: among other things, taping the cord to your body is extremely uncomfortable, and the damned thing is always at risk of getting disconnected. When I asked my last director if I could dispense with mine, pointing out that he had worked with me before, and knew that I could project, he replied: "I know you can; but if you don't use it, you'll sound different from everyone else." This was a valid point, so I went along. At least the mikes are better quality today than the first ones were in the 1960s; actors and actresses often had police calls coming over their mikes in the middle of a performance!
❤❤❤she was perfection. This vinyl album was played a lot in my childhood
The fabulous lady herself.....I saw the 1983 revival of Mame on Broadway.
Fantastic!
