Victorinox Trekker: Value Beyond Price

  • For many outdoor excursions many will find the Victorinox Trekker ideal in its capabilities. Featuring a 4.4" stainless pen shaped blade, the Trekker is a competent camp companion. The Trekker shown is a veteran to several Nutnfancy adventures and has proven itself well. It is an able skinner as well as an ideal food preparation blade. Add in a solid locking liner for the main blade and large flat blade driver, 3mm small flat blade, a Phillips driver, can opener, awl/reamer, useful wood saw, lanyard ring, tweezers, and a toothpick. Few downsides sully the excellent reputation of the Trekker: maybe the flexing reamer under hard use may pinch fingers, somewhat soft steel (but easy to re-sharpen!), lack of a pocket clip, and a 4.8 oz weight. New versions of the Trekker include the One Handed and German Army Trekker, both featuring an oval deployment hole and forward serrated blade (might be tough to sharpen). The Trekker carries well in sheath and is quick to action if outfitted with a lanyard my own design shown). There might be a few lighter options out there for pure blade usage but few will match the versatility of its tool selection while still possessing its large blade. Add in a very reasonable price, and every outdoor adventurer should probably be in possession of their very own Trekker for hand me down purposes. A highly recommended utility/camp/EDC blade. /////////////Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 9 of 10 (Standard model), One handed models (10 of 10); price considered

    I have a victorinox since i was 11 years old. It's a smaller standard version of a handyman. I got it from a swedish bust driver Stig and he had this knife for god knows how long. The point is i have been using this knife nearly every day and it still serves me really well. You'd be surprised how heavy use theese knives can stand!

    Again, thanks a lot TNP. For all you fellow Victorinox collectors, I just scored a Matterhorn Climber. Beautiful knife with great Matterhorn artwork on the handle...with a translucent ruby red color on the portion of the handle without the art. Super cool collectible!

    Sharpening serrations doesn't have to be hard. The Spyderco Sharpmaker does a great job, especially on properly designed serrations like Victorinox's.

    Hey nutn I've got a question and a comment.
    First off I really like you vids and find them very informative your channel is the fist place I go when looking for a review on my next purchase or when I just wanna kick back n get some quality entertainment.
    My question is. Have you ever used the hook that is on some of the swiss army tools that is between the Philips driver and the awl (can be difficult to deploy) and why have you not included it in your reviews or you show of tool sets. To be honest I'm not positive what you would use it for. I recently found it on my swiss scout. Thanks a bunch. Keep up the good work.

    I received mine as a gift from my son, Love the tool, but hated the serrated blade, it dulled out very quickly . My solution was to re-profile the blade into a straight edge and I am really happy with it now . My suggestion would be too purchase the knife with the straight edge blade and forget the serrations .

    Victorinox quality. Locking blade. Ergonomic scales. What more could you ask for? One handed blade opening? Yes and you can get that in the one handed trekker if you want it. Don't need a locked flat head? Grind that flathead down sharpen it and you can have a wood chisel. BTW I don't know if you're crazy, but I've stripped more wire with a Swiss Army than regular wire strippers. Pair it with a Leatherman Squirt for some pliers. Skip the soldier you will lose the tweezers and the tooth pick which are essential. If it's too heavy get the Farmer.

    I have the one hander with the non-serrated edge. It is a good, useful knife, although I generally end up leaving it at home in favour of my 80's era Champion. You've hit on why they use the steel they use. Blunt your S30V and you won't be sharpening it easily in the field. It's easy enough to close it one handed after a bit of practice.

    Excellent review, as always.
    I carry the hiker, which is essentially the "standard" version of the trekker, though I think youve convinced me to make a switch.
    A question; How do the reamer, bottle and can opener compare to the other knives, are they beefier as well or are they standard?
    Also a tip that I've learned with the reamer/awl:
    I'm unsure of how this would work with the trekker, but if you open the can-opener, the awl locks in place much more rigidly, making it a bit safer.

    just got the victorinox forester (same as the trekker, but with corkscrew instead of a philips screwdriver)
    and its great - used it soo much. i also thought about taking the "nomad" model (same as the trekker but without the sew) but the victorinox sews are just great - so i will prefer to have a sew on my victorinox instead of carrying a folding sew or using a leatherman sew.

    Hi Nutin'. Been waiting to here your views on the liner lock Victorinox'. Prob' get one for my backpacking system (not EDC as here in UK can't carry blade A: that long or B: that locks; stick to my Huntsmanfor that). Also, that OD handeled modle you showed at 10:57 is the new 2009 issue knife for the Swiss army which, imo, is added cool.

  • @Porsche917LH

    To close w/ 1 hand: DON'T turn the knife over; instead use your index finger to push against lock, and use thumb to push blade shut. Simple, effective & faster than flipping the knife.

I don´t have one myself yet, it´s on my list, but I´m joining the military next month and the Victorinox 08 soldier knife is standard issue for every soldier, so I´m kinda looking forward to receiving and working with one ... :)

    Have you tested the Wenger Ranger 78 as well? It's a bit larger than the trekker and a bit more expensive, but for outdoor use, I think I'd prefer having it with me.
    That said, the trekker is in my EDC bag because of it has just the right size and the one-handed opening method of the other knives might get them confiscated in my country.

    I have the swiss army version, which is almost the same, but has that one hand serrated blade and some other small differences. But same with this, only thing that bothers me is that phillips, which I tend to use quite often. It should open from the end, not the middle. And I would have loved a standard blade in it, so now I bought a one hand Sentinel to go around in my pocket, man 75 grams...

    Great video, subbed and liked. I've been thinking about getting one of these and I also prefer the non serrated version. I'm not sure why the military issues the serrated ones, or why they don't issue the ones with the tweezers and toothpick ... Maybe it's because they already have straight edged, fixed bladed knives issued to them in addition to the SAK but I don't know for sure. I wish everything had a liner lock on this knife but I guess that's overkill. At the very least I wish the saw also had a liner lock instead of the screw driver. I would much rather have the saw with a liner lock then the screw driver personally.

      Because soldiers will be cutting rope and paracord more than doing fine slicing work.

    • @guusdejong2523
      @guusdejong2523 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I edc a serrated knife myself (a spyderco salt 1 or delica) and when kept sharp you can slice just as well as with a plain edge but in addition to that: they stay sharp longer. That might be why the soldier '08 is serrated.

    • @thegoldensaber4531
      @thegoldensaber4531 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Guus de Jong
      That's true, but I don't like that it's much harder to sharpen when it finally does get dull. To each their own though.

    • @guusdejong2523
      @guusdejong2523 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a fine sharpmaker rod to touch it up occasionally but in good steel it stays sharp for months. I used my vg-10 delica and touch it up after every 8 months or so. The soldier '08 has very easy to touch up serrations. Fairly soft steel so you run it a few times through a sharpmaker and you're good to go.
      But if you want plain edge just buy one, I like a good plain edge too but I work part time in a supermarket and cut loads of plastic and cardboard so a serrated blade is preferred.
      I also really like carrying my victorinox farmer, buck 110 and case canoe though and have a plain edge k'roo custom slipjoint coming in

    • @thegoldensaber4531
      @thegoldensaber4531 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Guus de Jong
      Yeah I carry a Buck 110 also and it does just fine with cardboard and tape. If it's kept sharp it does even better than a serrated knife imo. Goes through cardboard like butter for me. I work in a restaurant, so I also have to cut cardboard frequently.

    The knife at 10:10 is - according to my knowledge - the new German Army knife. They replaced the old ones with those new Victorinox ones. Funny thing that one-handed blades are forbidden to carry in public, that put some soldiers into conflicts with the police since they acted against the weapon law. Also I think the blade shape, which is hard to sharpen, will suck; at first it's great my buddy told me, but after some use it goes dull, and you have to fumble around with it to get ist sharp again

    It is very similar to the FieldMaster. I think this one is missing a pen,but I don't need a pen that often so I think this is cool.
    Also the Trekker's losing a small blade, I think that's a downside. Because some people told me the small blade is really usefull.
    Missing the scissors as well,huge downside. I am 12 and I think scissors will be really useful for me. But the locking system is cool on the Trekker.
    Also I noticed how the FieldMaster has more tools and is cheaper on eBay and lighter than the Trekker.
