KaBar Dozier Folding knives: "Value Defined" by Nutnfancy

  • The little Zytel-handled EDC knives offer incredible value for their sub $20 price: AUS-8 steel, sharp hollow ground blades, fast deployment, tight lockup, reversible pocket clip and thumbstud, and a super lightweight 2.4 oz. Several blades designs are offered including the shown Folding Hunter (clip style), Folding Skinner, and the Spear Point Hunter. Newer variations have serrations. Few other knives compare at the pricepoint and the Bob Dozier designed folders set a great standard of value for a utility/EDC blade. //////////////////Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 8 out of 10 (price considered)

The Ka-bar Dozier folders are an AWESOME value and Nutnfancy's review is RIGHT ON THE MONEY. They have tremendous quality for the price. They also have a nice collectible element to them. For 2009, Ka-bar has released them in a variety of colors/finishes; orange handle/black blade, desert tan handle/black blade, and foliage green handle and black blade. Also, there is a mini Dozier called the model 4072. AWESOME little knife. Ka-bar just released in a new BO finish too! Rock on!

Most used and carried knife in my collection. Collection which include offering by Spyderco, Benchmade, Mcusta, Al Mar, Leatherman, Victorinox, Buck and Microtech.
Why? It's light, solid, extremely useful blade design, good edge, easy to open/close, doesn't scare the neighborhood when I take it out AND when I loose the little s*****, replacement is only 20 buck. I bring 2 with me when I'm traveling, this and the Leatherman juice is all I'll ever need.

Just picked up a spear point and hunter. Both are excellent value! Great blades.
One negative is the texture on the handle under the clip. It'll wear out your pocket if not addressed. High value for the money!

I posted this on your channel comments and I will post it here as well. The Dozier with the black finish is rust resistant even in salt water. I am in Florida right now and have made several trips into the ocean for hours with this knife in tow. No rust at all. I got home, rinsed the sand out and checked it out. Zero rust. Spyderco tenacious, by comparison, had spots of rust within minutes of hitting the water.

@Supermassively I havn't had any trouble flipping it open, just a small flick of the wrist. I find the thumbstud adequate. The traction works fine for me, felt cheap at first, but I love it. The blade is fantastic. I don't like the clip as much. But for the money, you cannot beat it.

Ka-bar are almost always worth the price you pay. Now, personally, I prefer Gerber or Spiderco. My favorite knife though, is the Gerber quick draw. It's way worth the money you pay for it. High quality steel, and it takes a great edge.

I've seen some models of the Dozier Ka-bar with a hole in it, similar to the hole you see in Spyderco knives. I would think that you could stick some zip ties on that hole, and you might turn it into a pocket snag knife, making it well suited for EDC tasks, and if need be, tactical usage.

To reverse the thumbstud, the hole on the new location of the screw would need to be beveled to accept the tapered screw head, I doubt that is the case, I could be wrong but I have encountered this problem on a few "reversible thumbstud" claims.

I have seen the T-Bolt in a store here in Canada.
It's too thick . I would never change my CARA CARA or TENACIOUS for a CRKT THUNDERBOLT.
Is not only the G-10 handle that makes the difference , but the ergonomics also...
Apparently CRKT and the made in China Spydercos/ Byrd Series are using the same type of steel.
In reality , SPYDERCO offers a better heat treatment for its steel , so the BYRDs keep the edge longer ...!

Been waiting for this review man. I bought a few as beater knives and Ive put them through hell just to see how tough they are and for 20 dollars you really cant ask for anything more. The steel isnt the best, but hey, aus8 for 20 bucks? Kind of makes you wish SOG would get the message that they need to reevaluate their pricing.

@CutleryNovice "steel snobs"? Or people that may work with metal as their job and know the properties of the steels. Nutn does a great job most of the time explaining what he knows about the steel, and data sheets are readily available on the internet for free. All steels have different properties for a reason because everyone has different needs. No one steel (or hardness) is best for all uses. Period.

I have several of these and they're great. Being a lefty I appreciate that I can put the thumb stud and clip on the other side. Weight is 2.1 oz.. All the knife shapes are fine, although i prefer the third one mentioned - the hunter spearpoint - but not really a spear point, more of a fat drop point. available for 420 or less on ebay.

  • @AussieMark909

I think the first blade shape shown is actualy the "Spear" model 4066. I have the Hunter (4062) as I prefer the drop point shape (this one is shown at 7:48). Got mine online from a place here in Australia for about $44au. For the money it is hard to beat this for an EDC knife. It came super sharp too. New handle colours available now so I'll be adding them to my collection soon. I'm finding more Kabars in my collection both folding and fixed as the bang for the buck just rocks. Great review!

Hello. To start with, thank you for the series of videos you have, are and obviously keep on uploading. They are most informative, instructive, CONSTRUCTIVE and above all enjoyable. Apart from the skinniest you amply provide, there is a very distinctive ambience and mindset that suits perfectly the topics. Now, when it comes to the KA-BAR DOZIER: I acquired the Spear Point model just recently (less than a week). Being a layperson and a novice in the wilderness of blades, I must say that I am impressed. The knife is light, robust, sharp and has already provided services for all sorts of daily chores and then some. Given the ridiculously low price, I plan to buy one more (for good measure; after all our local market is very poor when it comes to these commodities and on the other hand I am not a super fan of e-commerce). Despite its small size and the fact that this knife of mine is the most humble piece of my relatively small collection so far (10 knives [an assortment of fixed blades and folding blades; BKs, COLD STTEELs, SOGs] + 5 pocket knives (VICTORINOX mostly) + the pride of multi-tools (my irreplaceable LEATHERMAN WAVE), this little precious holds the greatest fascination for me. Take care and be well. Best regards from Hellas (otherwise, Greece).

  • @asmitty952
    @asmitty952 10 ปีที่แล้ว

They did in fact discontinue the "clip" point model that's shown as the primary version for most of this video at some point. Or more accurately, they re-worked that shape to incorporate a thumb hole instead of a stud. Also the mini comes in that "clip" point shape. I recently acquired one of the full-size thumb stud clip point versions as I've always found that particular pattern of this model to be the most attractive.

For a basic, high value outdoors folder, i'd look at 2 USA options: 1. the Gerber Gator Drop Point 154CM. This is a larger knife, more designed for a sheath, or bigger pocket, but the handle is EXTREMELY comfortable for extended use. The steel is the same as on a $150 Benchmade. I have 2, one is probably near 10 years old and has done 100's of trips, 1000's of miles, and it's still my favorite. (Too bad Gerber is mostly importing nowadays.) $40 for this.
      2. The Kershaw Skyline. This knife is more the size and weight of the Dozier, w/ a similar blade shape. The handle is G10, and the blade is sick Swedish Sandvik 14c28n, which is one of the best all around knife steels around. (Tougher, more edge stability, less wear resistance than the 154CM.) Skylines are perfect EDC knives, and great UL hiking knives. $35-ish.
I'd also get a great fixed blade Mora Companion, (or HD.) an incredible cutter, great quality for $15. Great steel, and choice of stainless or carbon.
      Good luck!
