Replacing the hot surface ignitor

  • This one covers how to replace the HSI on the gas furnace. This is done on a Trane TUY model but it works on TUX and TDX. It is also good for most other models of high efficiency furnaces. This video is part of the heating and cooling series of training videos made to accompany my websites: www.graycoolingman.com and www.grayfurnaceman.com to pass on what I have learned in many years of service and repair. If you have suggestions or comments they are welcome.
    If you are a homeowner looking to repair your own appliance, understand that the voltages can be lethal, the fuels are highly flammable and high pressures are used. Know your limits.

    Great vid, thanks! How often on average would you say the ignitor is the problem when you get a "No Heat" call? It seems like they would go bad every 10 years or so since they have to heat up and then cool down so much.

    Would it be possible for you to do a video regarding how to test HSIs, thermocouples, powerpiles with the voltmeter? Love the videos, I learn alot!

      I have a number of videos on HSIs. My channel has a playlist on them. Also one on thermopiles and thermocouples.

    I installed the ignitor in same lcation as old one....not in front of a burner..itvwas installed in between two burners....to makecsure it wasnt a location issue i put a lighter flame in front of burner while starting up and still no burner turn on

    aren't some older tranes only 80v specific igniters? gotta watch you replace with the right replacement

    • @grayfurnaceman
      @grayfurnaceman  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some of the silicon nitride ones would start out at 120 volt and drop in voltage and drop to 80 if the burner continued to light normally.

    I have an older Goodman gas furnace with the hot surface ignitor. It runs wonderfully, however, once every few months the ignitor will not turn on then the furnace goes into lockout. Once I reset the furnace, it turns on and functions properly. How can it work so flawlessly, then one out of a thousand times, it will not work at all?

    If it uses a carbide Ignitor, can you replace it with a nitride ignitor?

    Hi my furnace stopped firing up....ignitor was broken....i replaced ignitor and now ignitor glows but burners wont turn on.....could it be a limit switch tripped?...seems no gas is issue

    • @grayfurnaceman
      @grayfurnaceman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the ignitor glows, there is no limit problem. You have a misaligned ignitor, supply problem, dirty burners or gas valve not opening up.

    Is there any harm in touching the HSI with your hands?

    • @Fireship1
      @Fireship1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +3en6ie 3en6ie I was told when trained that it's a myth. They used to tell techs that because the early HSIs were delicate. The less touching, the better. When you think about it they glow so hot just about any small amount of oil would burn off. Do I touch the element when I handle them? No, I treat them as delicate as possible.

      There is no harm in touching the HSI. I have run them soaked in oil. Temp is so high, the oil burns off. However, I do not touch the silicon carbide ignitors because they are so delicate.

    @grayfurnaceman I got one for you. I relatively new technician and I recently installed a ReVolv brand 70% downflow in a family members home. Well in the 3-4 months since install, it has burned up 3 ignitors. On this last replacement, I noticed that the furnace would run less than a minute before going out. Well it uses the ignitor for flame rectification and I tracked it down to poor grounding of the burner assembly. However after only 20 minutes of flame on this new nitride ignitor, the wires are already melting and aren't going to last long. It's installed in the fixed position with no adjustment on the burner assembly. I'll be damned if I can figure out the cause of this issue. Any ideas anyone?

      @@grayfurnaceman I was just speaking with someone on Reddit who has first hand knowledge of these revolv units and they are designed to use a specific roof jack system. I'm gonna take a shot and say the venting is the issue and the flame is walking around inside and getting behind the ignitor and melting the wiring.

    My furnace blowing out cold air.
    Hot surface ignitor glows and burner turn on. However after a couple min, the burner shut off which result in furnace blowing out cold air. Any tips on how to solve this?
