I have woven valleys with architectural shingles for decades, never a callback, no problems. If you have to use sealant to stop a valley from leaking, you're not a roofer.

Good day gentlemen, James Dunn keep up the good work. My comment is regarding the weaving on valleys? Do you ever wonder why builders don’t install any kind of underpayment on their valleys? Well I was told by a project manager that works for a builder and he said that as long as the valleys are weaved they won’t leak. Builders are going to do what ever it takes to safe money but before they do they get free consultation from their suppliers on how to install a certain product and what’s the most cost effective. He told since they build so many homes per year, the suppliers are going to give them the best advise on the how and safe money at the same time. That’s why builders don’t use starter or valley underpayment on their roof s and they still get approved on the warranty. So when the roofing companies do work on fairly new roofs after a hail storm they actually improve the home. This is my very first time commenting so please be kind. Im grateful that there is always plenty of work and everyone can share a piece of the pie. Good day
Shingle valleys hold debris and moisture. They look great to start with but don't self clean in the way that metal valleys do. Good if your flipping a house but not for a long term home owner.
Question for you, In Canada whenever I see a closed in valley the whole roof looks in good condition but the valley is always the first thing to rot. You have the valley metal in there so why don't you just cut the open valley and eliminate the chance for moisture to rot the valley, or in Florida do you not have that problem?
I'm from the old school hammer and nail. So you use a gun but I dont see you checking the nails for depth? I've pulled off many shingles from roofs where contractors used a gun
The shingles are Owens Corning. I am a preferred contractor for Owens Corning and it is all I use, never had a bad batch in 17 years of being a roofing contractor.

The moment you weave architecturals you void the warranty. The double laminate is too thick and it creates a gap in the valley. This is an absolutely wrong installation method and should only be used with 3 tab shingles. Read the wrapper its the only directions in big bold letters.
Probly ok to weave with NCO shingles if you can find good ones. The old days thats all we used and the three tab or CO. But No Cut Out were nice since flat and lighter per what was being covered. I think the arc-tech shingle is weak in the single spots and makes valleys bad to weave but worse to put 2 layers on also. Wish they made more NCOs with all the fancy stuff on it.
It should be no done it with architectural shingles just for the thickness that style is meant for a three tab shingles , these guy is good but I only concern on the nails to close to the joint!
Looks good but I probably wouldn't do this on a roof that is over a 5/12 pitch. I can see the laminate shingle cracking. However I see that you still put a metal flashing underneath. Smart. Great video.

Any real roofer knows that for number one... You cannot leave architectural shingles in a valley, due to warranty issues and thickness. Number 2 you're not supposed to nail into the metal flashing in the valley because it flexes you're supposed to Tac it from the sides. You're also supposed to put a bead of silicone on the edge of the flashing to the roof. Got... Looks pretty though LOL

Second, the installation can create gaps where water can run under the shingles (at 1:42 in the video you get a good look at the gaps created).
Todd Springer I did the woven valley when I was working as a roofer years ago. Never really had any problems. Those gaps for the most part will close up over time and with heat from the sun as long as you don't nail the single tight. This guy should push the shingle into the valley before he nails. The steel being used in the valley, in very hot areas will accelerate aging. Valley flashing also works well, but many of the home owners didn't like the look, the main reason I would avoid using the so called California cut along with some of the other methods, I would only use them on rentals or where I knew the home owner just didn't care. Shingle in themselves are such poor quality, to me they are a waste of time, effort, and money. But we really have no choice in some situations.

But i guess its personal preference, alot of these roofers don't have a problem and it doesn't really make much of a difference

4/12 slope and run. Code is anything over 2/12 so you are incorrect. Look up slope and run in the 2010 Florida Building Code. I have never had a valley leak and have been a roofing contractor for 15 years.
So Florida code is to put metal in valleys and then lace with arch shingles. We got 2 roofers from Florida I haven't seen them do this. Why not use moisture guard instead of metal. It's wider, seals around the nail, and damn near glues itself to the roof. I still shingle over it, no lace, but still. If that's code in Florida damn that sucks.

That shingle manufacture does NOT allow there architectural shingle to be woven. Check the web site for valley installation! Another guy who thinks he know how to roof . You just voided your customers warranty.

Laminate shingles can not be done like that. These systems are made for maximum protection with MINIMAL coverage. Layering shit up is not only,you guessed it, Stupid but brings your roof into greater risks for failure. This isnt 1972 guys. Stay up to the curb or it will pass you by lol. Roofing sence 96 and thats one of the first things i learned, fully woven valleys fail and are bad. Less its a 3 tab but even them i close cut. Ever seen a woven valley fail? They lift up,they saturate. They suck.

Weaving is the old way but is still in my opinion the best way.
Before anyone weaves their Valley you might want to check with the manufacturer to make sure you don't void the warranty.

the top corner of shingle should go in middle of valley not the outside edge for a smoother less wastefull job.

Those look like strip shingles (faux dimensional) so likely fine. Most dimensional are not allowed to be woven.
Woven valley's are Mickey Mouse. A closed cut valley is the best.

except GAF says they will not warranty the architectural shingles if they are woven. Can only do closed cut or open valley.
