Learn about brewing Tree House-style DOUBLE IPA - ft. HAZE!

  • In this video Nate shares thoughts on how Tree House Brewing Company constructs double IPA, and features Haze.
We focus on Haze, which is a beer that is designed to taste like peach nectar in spite of it note containing any peach. It was an innovative IPA that, after much trial and tribulation, came to define the Tree House flavor profile. To achieve this effect, we apply years of focused alchemy which combines select grain, hops, and yeast to create a beer that is truly one of a kind.
We only want to see you bathing in the purple haze.

Nate, in my opinion you have been making some of the best home brewing content on TH-cam. I’m still sipping on the home brew recipe you posted and everyone I’ve shared it with agrees it is quite delicious. Each video you share imparts wisdom that helps make my brews better, and this is all coming from someone in California who has never even had a sip of TreeHouse beer! Thanks for the videos. Cheers 🍻

First trip to monson was 4/2/16, I believe we left with no cans & about a dozen *new* growlers of haze. This beer sent my love for craft beer to the next level and will always have a special place in my heart! It’s been too long, I need a pour.

I really enjoyed this in focused look at one of your core beers, describing your intentions for making it, how it is distinct from other beers labeled as Double IPA, and from beers in your core line up. It was also cool to see what the key flavor components were meant to be showcased in your core beers like Green, Julius, and Haze. I would love to see more videos like this that take a deeper dive into a individual beer in your line up. Thank you for all of the content you have made in general, as it has really helped me appreciate your beer more having a deeper understanding as to how it is produced and philosophy that goes into creating them.

Haze is the best beer you brew imo. As a home brewer, I’ve chased the incredible balance you strike with Haze. I’ve learned it’s pretty easy to make the very hoppy turbid (no adjunct) IPA, but the balance in Haze escapes me. Thank you for all the great videos and keep leaving us home brewers Easter eggs!

The journey for me has been enlightening. I "was" a diehard Trillium disciple as I work next to Fort Point. Treehouse became my next door neighbor in Tewksbury. There was a transition period but I have fully embraced Nate's approach. Treehouse's flavor profile and approachability are unmatched. Big but smooth or soft as Nate says. Blessed to be a neighbor of Treehouse.

Yes! That little hit of resin on the finish that you get with Haze, in addition to the remarkable peach expression, and bubblegummy yeast, is what sets it apart. Often what I find to be lacking in most beers is on the finish. Aroma, and to a lesser degree, mid palate, is easy - it’s the way that a beer finishes that sets it apart. For a while, IPA makers were experimenting with no hot-side hop IPAs. Those were not good. While they are very different beers, the beers that come to my mind when I think of quintessential NEIPA are Heady and Julius. Neither has been replicated all that well, especially Heady. Juicy Bits is a pretty strong Julius clone. Fiddlehead (to a lesser degree lately), Focal, and the Substance fit somewhere in between. Tastes seem to have shifted towards fruity, ripe ipa that’s lacking in what you might call old school bitterness or resin.

I’m really curious about your eschewing of the traditional NEIPA label. I think my take from the outside is that while your brewery was instrumental in creating the NEIPA category and “scene”, and bringing the broad category of “less bitter, dramatically more juicy, less malty” ipas to the beer zeitgeist, there’s certainly a difference between the big brands presenting in this broad category.
I’m not sure I understand why you wouldn’t classify a beer as a New England ipa per BJCP and general guidelines. It’s never the case that all beers within a style category are the same so I don’t think that pigeon holes you at all.
I love the fluffy body of your beers though and to me that’s one of the defining features (along with the balanced bitter finish, and more rounded hop profile vs some of the more astringent / hop burn experiences I’ve had elsewhere).
To me I think of a hazy ipa on a range from light and bright to soft and round. Im curious how else you could describe the mouthfeel or body. “Round” doesn’t really mean anything but that’s the word that comes to my mind!
