Durant sa carrière, Antonio Vivaldi a composé approximativement 500 concertos dont 230 pour violon et 40 pour deux instruments. Pour une plongée au sein de ce corpus massif, qui de mieux que Giuliano Carmignola ce grand spécialiste de la musique baroque italienne ? Pour l’épauler dans la tâche, Kerson Leong et l’ensemble MuCH, constitué des artistes en résidence à la Chapelle Musicale, vous feront parcourir la musique instrumentale très imagée du compositeur vénitien.

Quel movimento immensamente espressivo e a fil di suono... dell'Autunno... mi era sembrato già Inverno.... Musica da brividi.... Non ho parole... dall'ammirazione e, come dire, estasi....
Very few musicians has the same rich understanding of Vivaldi in general and Four Seasons in particular. In lesser hands it always sounds frenzied and mechanical. Not in Maestro Carmingola's case. He has that innate affinity to material and feel quite free to work the tempi and volume and character to a much more nuanced and richer sound that opens up Vivaldi as true original. The lovers of a clean style usually wince at all that. Too bad for them. He has an utmost taste for decoration and his light hand technique is exquisitely agile and elegant. Add to the mix rigorous musicality and extreme sensitivity to any shifts in rhythm and character of the sound. One wonders how come he is not a superstar he is ought to be? Looks like all that rich chromaticism is not to a saxon liking. Oh, well, he is a personal favorite all the same. Bravo, Maestro!
Baroque doesn't need heroes like Justin Bieber or Nigel Kennedy. Vivaldi is not suffering a popularity crisis like 1700 - 1920s.

L'esecuzione è molto buona e ben fatta, e, se proprio devo fare un appunto è sugli archi, solista compreso: vedere mentoniera e spalliera mi fa un po' impressione, non tanto per voler essere puristi ma per il fatto che la performace cambia molto, (questi accessori subentrarono circa un secolo dopo e Vivaldi non li disponeva). Poi, ci sarebbe anche da ridire sull'asta d'appoggio dei violoncelli ma ciò lo tollero maggiormente. Naturalmente siamo a livelli molto alti ma preferisco altre formazioni che si attengono più alla storicità.
My favorite 4-seasons recording (1982 ?) was conducted by Zubin Mehta with violinists Stern, Perlman, Zuckerman, and Mintz. Would be spectacular to have Carmignola record with some of these other greats.
Be sure to enjoy Vivaldi's RV 278; Carmignola is by far the best I've heard performing it.
coompletely different styles and aesthetics. stern and perlman turn everything into klezmer, zuckerman is OK but too much compulsive vibrato...mintz was good at paganini but too scratchy at anything else

Superba interpretazione. Per suonare bene il barocco italiano serve tanta fantasia, attenzione alle sfumature, elasticità, sottile interpretazione del suono, dinamica, bravura. Se pretendiamo di trasformarla in qualcosa di matematico e rigido, la musica italiana del periodo diventa arida ed insignificante, come succedeva anni fa con le interpretazioni soprattutto dei tedeschi e degli olandesi. Di fronte all'imprevedibilità ed alla straripante vitalità della musica di Vivaldi, non c'è posto per esecuzioni accademiche. Vivaldi non è Bach e Bach non è Vivaldi. E il barocco è soprattutto Italia, perché qui è nato, in tutte le arti.

Why does it sound to me like his violin is slightly out of tune?
It sounds to me that he tuned his violin slightly higher so he sounds more brilliant, but it may just be me being a dummy haha
Baroque era violins are tuned at a lower hertz than modern violin you hear. This might be a reason why it sounded a little "off." Notice how he holds the bow closer to the center, which is how they played during that time. It wouldn't surprise me if he tuned his violin likewise.

Maybe he is not completely clean, but for me his interpretations are really colourful, powerfull and interesting. More than most of the solo violin players
It might be but we're all human and instruments can be a bit like cats and do their own thing. Concerto I movement 2 the viola is definitely more sharper!! Carmignola gives a little glance around 5:10 - 5:15 as if to say, "come on buddy, whatcha doing with that tuning of yours?!?"

All is good EXCEPT FOR ONE THING - THE DAMN FOOT STOMPING! AND btw, they play modernized instruments in a baroque style - not true baroque manner on authentic instruments and on modern metal strings not gut strings. So, its only their style that is somewhat baroque. Poorly recorded.

This has to be the best interpretation of four seasons lol, also during those times the players did add on to the original.
