    • Overlanding at 10K fee...
    ***I WANT TO START OFF BY SAYING, if you are looking for a vehicle to be an off-roader 1st, and a daily driver 2nd, then the Honda Passport shouldn't be your choice. BUT, if you are looking for a Daily Driver 1st, and an off-roader 2nd, then in my opinion, the Passport is a very very compelling choice!
    After getting through Cold Water Canyon in Lytlecreek California...
    [Video will be released later, check out Borderline explorer's video here:]
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUNYn...
    ... I felt pretty confident about tackling the Coyote Flats trail and making my way over to Funnel Lake. I can't say that this trail was much easier. While Cold Water Canyon is 2 miles of intermittently rough terrain, the Coyote Flats trail was a torture test of a vehicles reliability. Transmissions will be tested! In fact, we found out after our trip that another group of friends attempted the ascent up to the flats and overheated. This group included an Acrua MDX and a Jeep Grand Cherokee WK1 (in 4 low, which is absolutely surprising).
    Watch this video to see how my 2019 Honda Passport compared to a 2017-2019 Honda Ridgeline.
    Not many people know, but the AWD system found in the bigger Honda vehicles is pretty advanced, it's called iVTM4. It combines the standard traction control systems with a twin clutch rear differential (think electronically controlled mechanical limited slip differential with reduction gear sets). I disconnect my sway bars to have as much trail advantage as I could get.

    Hi! JonDZ. Liked your video. I haven't been to Funnel Lake since 2002. The trail doesn't look much different. I left my truck at the bottom where Coyote Flat trail starts climbing. I then took my Tote Gote off-road scooter from there. It sure doesn't look any smoother. That scooter only has weak front suspension and solid rear. So it was only a little better than being in a 4wd. I started at 6am. Had lunch at the lake at noon, I explored a lot of side trails and was home by 6pm. I can tell you it was one of my most enjoyable days off-roading, even if it was rough in a lot of places.
    You mentioned the North Trail. When I was at the lake there were two guys in jeeps coming in that way. But they sure were going slow. I thought at the time the South Trail was a better one. But that was just an observation from a distant view.
    I've had the Tote Gote on the Laurel Lakes trail too. But there was snow still on the upper parts of the trail. I didn't make it to the lakes. I could see the lower Laurel Lake below where I was stopped. I did explore on foot along the stream in the meadow on my way back. I want to go again. But not on a crowded weekend for sure. Ha!

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alfredo Barroso that’s awesome! The Cherokee trail hawk is the most capable awd crossover in the USA (not sure if we can consider the Jeep Grand Cherokee trailhawk WK2 a crossover, since I believe it has a real part time 4wd system, I could be wrong, I dunno.). So, if you watch part 1 of this series, I mention that Outside magazine has an article where they said they took a Cherokee trail hawk up to the coyote flats and they said it was at its limits.... but.... I felt the article was BS, because a 56:1 crawl ratio and a real rear locker would easily get through this trail. The only issue would be the ground clearance. Awesome job getting through this if you were at stock height!

      Spacewntity yes! I think it did pretty well! This is really all I want a vehicle to do, and I think it did alright! I’m very happy with the passport. I may go with the 3.5 inch lift kit, but other than that, the $877 it cost to lift my vehicle (including $450 for installation) was a really good value to increase capability.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Knivesinedc so, the lowest point will be the lower control arms. Usually parts connected to the axles aren’t counted, but they are the lowest point and the thing I need to watch out for. Wheel placement is important for me, so I need to get my tires on top of the highest points. The lowest point on the rear arms is 8.75”. Besides that, my front skid plate and exhaust mufflers are at 11.25”. My rear differential is at 11.75”.

    • @slide0r
      @slide0r 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@raypizarro I think its doable stock if you choose the right lines, you may come away with some scrapes and dings. I definitely hit my stock skid plate once or twice but I was rushing my departures over some rocks. Other than that, I inspected the day after I didn't see any real damage. I would definitely go with a buddy and make sure you utilize atrac to the fullest and carefully choose your lines since you don't have a rear locker. I mean JonDZ made it up there with no problem on his passport so it should be a breeze for you. Hit me up for a run next time, we need more 4Runners to represent especially in Magnetic Grey :)

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      raypizarro, hey thanks for all the support over the years! I think the perfect example of a stock toyota truck making it through was the white Tacoma. All he had was tires and wheels, so that’s basically what you have. Randy is correct, if my passport could make it, then that means your 4runner could make it. Your vehicle has 9.5 inches of stock ground clearance and if you plus sized your tires you’ll have even more. What will help you out are all the offroad goodies like 4 low, wheel articulation, and lots of maximum ground clearance (your side overhangs are 18” stock). Just get your wheels to run over the highest point of the trail and you’ll be good. Randy, let’s plan another trip out here.

    man that was pretty intense!! would you say this is hard or intermediate??

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alvin Rosete for a 4x4 Truck it would be on the moderate/hard side, but for an awd crossover it would be on the hard/impossible side. Basically you need a transmission that can take the steep climb. Anything with 4low will do it or a vehicle with an aggressive 1st gear. Make sure to check out my first video where a Honda Ridgeline overheated 7 times. From a technical stand point, the rocks are pretty rough. It’s not “severe” rock crawling or anything, but it’s starting to get on the difficult side. With careful driving, A stock 4x4 truck could do this.

    Nice one! How was that Ridgeline doing? Do you have any info about his lift and wheel/tire set-up?

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Ridgeline had a 2 inch lift and 245mm tires. I don’t have the exact height but they were probably only about 30 inches.

      @@JonDZ_Adventuring I see. I guess 2" is the sweet spot for lifting the ridgeline, maybe avoid stress on the axles and whatnot.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know it sounds weird, but the 3.5” lift kit will have less stress on the axles. This kit utilities 1 inch sub frame spacers that put less stress on the axles. I just got the kit installed a month ago. I have 12 inches of true minimum ground clearance now. A 1 inch true minimum gain and a 1.5 inch max gain from the 2 inch kit
      Check out my Instagram, I have posts about the 3.5” kit.

    I can't do one foot on gas and one foot on brakes! 3rd Gen Tacoma has fly by wire throttle which cuts out the throttle if you touch the brakes!!! So, every time you get off the brake while giving a little throttle, your transmission makes a slamming sound which sounds like WONK. thanks, Toyota

      Davey Bernard oh! Interesting! My friend Tactical Tony has a 3rd gen taco. I remember I was airing up and he was reconnecting his ABS fuse(s).
      My Passport will cut off the gas when I press the brake too much. I’d imagine it’s not like an old school mechanical system. I’m still learning how much I’m able to two foot it. In this video, what worked for me was using a constant throttle. After climbing up a rock I would Feather the brake to glide down the rock. To get up a steep shelf, I will hold the brake, and then feather the gas to load up on torque and to prevent myself from rolling downhill. I’m still learning though

      D Yang thanks! The passport wasn’t too stressed out. Actually, my first gear is at a 20.4:1 crawl ratio (which is like a 4runners 4-low 2nd gear at 19:1). Many of the Toyota guys were doing this in 4 high (14:1). I have a Scangauge 2 and once I got up to the Rocky section my transmission stayed at around 190 F.

      Depends what you're driving if you have 40 inch tires on your vehicle you probably won't even need four-wheel drive. For the average basic for 4wd setup on Toyotas and other vehicles up there there's a little challenge.

      chriss Whites I have a TH-cam colleague that did black bear pass in a 2018 Subaru Outback. It’s all downhill so not much of a test of a drivetrain. Now Hells Gate in Moab, that would prove it’s worthiness. KIA had a professional driver + spotter complete it in a Sorento, but it took serious cosmetic damages and I’m not a professional driver 🤣.
