- Of all the genres that graced our eardrums during the 1990s, Ska Punk has to be one of the most under appreciated and forgotten. The infectious rhythms and attitude of Ska Punk still resonate with me, so today I'm going to record my first Ska Punk song!

"I wanna take a pistol throw the bullets all away, pull the trigger just to see what it feels like"
Oof my guy, thats a fucking top dollar lyric. The type of lyric that makes you stop for a second and really realise that we have all felt that feeling before, but most of us aren't able to articulate.
Bravo bossman :)
I appreciate that, dude!
Back in the 90s I saw Rancid for $10 and they were selling t-shirts for $10. How punk is that? Also, your finger drumming blows my damn mind every time.
That's so rad! Rancid is one of my all time favorite bands. Super jealous you saw them during their prime.
Rancid is mainstream as hell if i don’t remember wrong they were on mtv lol it’s not punk
that was a sick finger drumming indeed haha
@@CizerKedi found the gatekeeper lol
You're so talented. You have no space for bad feelings because everything comes from you is Good.
Thank you so much!
I agree! It's incredible.
This is awesome. Dark lyrics with happy chords make the best ska songs.
Very well done, born for Ska !
Hits allllll the sweet notes of a ska classic. You make each component seem so simple, but then so expertly combined and it sounds super iconic. Really capture the intended style.
Thanks for the kudos! I appreciate it
Them's some Mighty Gold Fingers you've got there!
Those walking bass lines are so much fun. You've got a real feel for ska grooves!
Thank you! Bass has never been my primary instrument but I LOVE writing and playing baselines. So satisfying!
Every time I tune in, I’m wowed by your composition, performance, and production talents. Keep up the great work, I believe in you!
Comments like this keep me motivated. Thank you so much!
Wonderful Spencer. Well done. Thanks.
Yo Spencer, i hold Ska like Boogie Woogie close and dear to my heart because nothing makes my feet and heart tap like that.
Super stoked to hear a rendition of your ska.
The (My friend, my foe) melody and harmonies makes me crank yo shit up to 11, love your energy while being loose and ill make damn sure my neighbour gets to appreciate that too :P
The (My four leave clover turned to poison ivy every night)-part is so beautiful and your keydrums-skills are ridicolously groovy.
I'm sure you're a great dude to jam with 🎶
Man, i love gettin' notified for a new banger from you!
Have a good one m8!
So delighted to read this after a long day. You made my day! Thank you so much for checking it out.
As an expert on the field I can confirm this is indeed how you make Ska-Punk.
Your videos and music are awesome dude. Seriously
Glad you like them!
Youre very good at so many different styles Spencer. This one was really sad and about a place ive definately been and am sometimes. I guess thats what the music is for though is to learn to celebrate ourselves. Every moment is worth celebrating even if it doesnt feel so good. Thanks for this one and all the music you make. It always really touches me.
Some of your songs makes me feel like I'm listening Less Than Jake and the Littlest Man Band at the same time, and I fucking live for it!
Fishbone just dropped some brand new material, really great stuff!
This sounds more like visual kei to me haha 😂❤❤🎉
This was so fun to watch
Thanks for watching. It means a lot! The song is on Spotify if you're interested.
Opened this video in a new window, didn't see your face for 10 seconds and thought for sure you were Chris DeMakes. You are his voice twin and it's tripping me out.
Awesome thanks! Very inspiring ❤
Your finger drumming skills are incredible 😊
I'm gonna do the "ultimate finger drum" solo soon!
Looking forward as always 😚😚
My dad got me into the ska-punk scene and me and my band are trying to write some. This video is very informative and the song is killer. Thanks for this, keep it up! So so so talented😀
Ska Punk is the best and you nailed the sound for sure. Your verse to chorus build is perfect.
Up next, just keep jamming on what interests you. Much more than other channels on YT, you really seem to enjoy making these songs, and thats what has set you apart. Keep it up!
Thanks! Will do!
Well done. Couldn’t wait to hear it all together. Love the song!
Thanks!
I love the insight into your thought processes during composition. These videos are super informative and enjoyable to watch, thanks for sharing!
Of course! Glad to share the few things I've picked up
Dude this is incredible!!! Thanks for making this! I can't believe how real this sounds! Love the way your vocal sounds! It's mixed perfectly! What plugins are you using to mix your vocals?
🤩
For this video I used "Gain Reduction" for my compressor, which is a plugin by Joey Sturgis, and Logic's stock Space Designer reverb. I actually just put up a video about recording pop punk in Logic and it goes pretty in depth, so if you check that out I explain everything that I use- plugins and all!
great song
Thanks, dude! It's on Spotify if you're interested. My artist name is "Spencer Austin" and the song is called "Giving Up and Tuning Out"
I love ska punk music and this was amazing. Super Underrated content. You should have millions of subs my friend🤘🏼
I appreciate the support! Thank you so much.
This is literally "Here in your Bedroom" from Goldfinger. Saying that in a good way lol
Not gonna lie, the ending of this song was HELLA inspired by Superman by Goldfinger. That ending is so blissful and beautiful and just amazing in every way, and I wanted to try and capture that feeling myself.
Absolutely beautiful! "My four leave clover turned to poison ivy every night" Very lyrical lyrics! Bravo!
Glad you appreciated it, Christian. Thanks!
Pick it up pick it up pick it up! That shirt definitely screams 90's ska band.
Another banger of a video. I always get inspired to write after you upload.
You can do it dude! Just pick up the guitar and start writing.
This is SOOO unbelievably helpful. I've been wanting to make a musical and a ska song is perfect for one of my characters- but i wasn't able to figure out how to make one until now. Thank you!
So glad you found it helpful!
Man, you're good. Keep doing what you're doing. My new favorite channel!
I really appreciate that, Jesper. Thanks for watching and there's plenty more coming!
You make laying down those drum lines look too easy!! Haha that is a special talent that I always struggle with!! Sounds great cheers!!!
Thank you so much! I appreciate it. I actually just bought an electronic drum set, I'm gonna do a video comparing finger drums to electronic drums. Should be fun!
@@songsbyspencer It was absolutely my pleasure. ya!! I'm super excited to hear it. Hey how do you feel about drum pads? I would honestly just play an acoustic kit but that can be tricky with a tiny home studio haha Thanks for what you do brotha, its addictive!! Cheers!
I think the closer you can get to actually playing a Drumset the more genuine the performance will be. I've never used drum pads, but I'm sure they work great! This electronic kit is awesome! Uploading the video now, it'll go live on Sunday.@@anthonyargemusic
@@songsbyspencer Thanks Spencer! yup, there will never likely be a true replacement for analogue, but technology is getting wild!! Thanks again buddy and Ill definitely stop by to see what you do with that new kit!! Cheers!!
Amazing as always. Your voice and lyrics are absolutely perfect.
That means a lot, Jordan. Thanks!!
❤❤❤
stumbled upon your channel today. And i'm sticking around.
Looking forward to more ska, pop and punk rock videos.
Man, this was legendary. It would be great if you could do a video and break down how to do ska song form, moving from verse to chorus and how do brdiges work
Love It!!
Thank you! Glad to hear it
Yeah I agree this is more of the poppy ska than ska punk, it doesn’t feel punk at all, and those “horns” don’t sound anything like horns lol. But overall still a pretty good non-punk ska song. Keyboard/synth is a fine alternative to horns for ska.
Still, would love to hear a more punk-style take on this, if you can pull off a less polished, more gritty vocal style.
this is so helpfull, since i was a child i wanted to play/make ska punk. thanks alot for your informative video.
You can do it! It's fun and so satisfying- one of my favorite genres.
It pains me to see that you only have 7ish thousand subscribers. I'm sure you'll blow up soon!
I hope so! I appreciate the support.
This was amazing heck yeah rock on!
Nicely done! if you don't know Crowned King, check em out.album is tempting fate. they were one of my favorite bands!
I'll be sure to give them a listen!
Feels like a Mad Caddies tune
You did it again man, keeping high standards with your production and content. This time also throwing in a groovy shirt and bling. Also great split screen editing 🎉
How about making an impossible jazz song? Wicked chord progressions?
As always I appreciate the support, it means a lot. And yes! I need to do a jazz video. I've dabbled in it just enough to pull it off, so that will be on my list!!
very visual and with cool graphics that complement the overall video. It's on top of the fact that the song is really good.
By the way, thanks for recommending Alvvays - Belinda Says. The song just blows my mind.
So glad you enjoyed the video and the song. Also glad you dug Belinda Says, Alvvays is a great band. As I get older I find myself getting more and more into indie bands.
Another great one! You are very motivating and inspiring.
Keep it up!
You already know it!
Awesome!
You nailed it! Ska Punk is one of the less genres I never tried. I'm scared of the bassline and rhythm guitar work. Challenge accepted for next year :)
You can do it!
great song!
Very Goldfingery!
Great job my friend
Met Mighty Mighty Boss Tones nice guys.
I was a Doorman in LA at a "trendy bar" and let them in past the line.
Cool Cats.
I love your finger drumming Spencer!
Sick bass sound btw.
I appreciate the kind words! And looking back it's a bit tragic I didn't mention them in this video. The Bosstones RULE!
@@songsbyspencer They became regulars... I ran the Good Luck Bar that was mentioned in Swingers all the clubs took off from that movie but my Boss wanted 2k a day. So Favreau kept the bar in a spoken line only and not a scene as a mild finger to Jimmy and Sean my Bosses.
Great guys.
I knew them from a Kiss Covers Album my Cousin had.
I let in Ragtm as well.
Heaps of celebs some nice... some not.
Good memories of LA.
man, i really lik eyour videos. thanks for sharing your talent.
i still love the emo/screamo bands of the early 2000's. bands like underoath, alexisonfire, silverstein, saosin. would you do an emo/screamo song, please?
Maybe one day, I have absolutely no ability to scream, unfortunately. But I will do a metal song one of these days!
Ah, General Rudie dayssss!
Video doesn't have enough views for this kind of banger
I appreciate that! I'm still a pretty new channel, and I'm hoping to build this into a big one.
Goldfingah!!!
AF
You want to listen to some ska bands from Britain
The specials,Madness,Bad manners, The beat 👍
This is pretty hot
🔥🔥
Well, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones had their biggest hit about having AIDS, so writing SKA about nevative subjects is a time-honored technique. You rock! (Er...you SKA!) (EDIT: FIX DERP)
Mr Brightside?
@@mattbarachko5298 Welp, I screwed that one. It was the Mighty Mighty Bosstones (Impression that I get). Sheesh. I need sleep.
i can't figure out how to get the first guitar to sound good. how do you get that "twangy" effect in the first part of the song?
I gildfinger but pretty good. Add more rancididity
I agree. More Rancidity is always better. They're one of the top bands of the 1990s in my opinion. Super underrated!
You forgot the trombone
How to Mighty Bosstones.
LOL basically
Now all you need is a Hawaiian shirt and some sunglasses 🕶️
Or a three piece suit and tie!!!
Make a ska-punk opera
Noti gang
The support means a lot, Ben! For real
That got dark there at the end. You ok, buddy?
I'm good! Was feeling frustrated but life gets like that sometimes- and it's an important emotion to work through. All is well! I appreciate the concern
@@songsbyspencer I just discovered you recently. I’m obsessed with home studio recording and I love ska. The lyric thing is true. All my songs have the same lyrical flow. Super doom and gloom. It’s easier to admit my failures in life that aren’t love related. Just songs about being indifferent.
I appreciate you!
You mention a lot of ska bands, but it sounds like you listen to a LOT of Goldfinger
I play way too much Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. That's the real problem!
He's too good for ezdrummer
Please don’t put a gun in your mouth just to see what it feels like, wtf Spencer?! I’d like to say keep up the great work but honestly maybe take a break and get a new perspective
It's just a lyric, no need to take it literally! But I appreciate the concern. All is well!
A hug against bad feelings: 🤗 Try this: give it all to Jesus when you're alone. And next time kick my ass with metal! 😃
itzz good, a bit overproduced for punk imo (not that I have a say, given my current "discography" lol)
I can respect that opinion! I'm currently working on a video (probably my next one), centered around what a "perfect" recording is. I personally prefer recordings that are a bit rough around the edges, especially in the punk genre. But, a lot of my favorite punk bands have very high production value, so I'm always torn between the two in my own productions.
too pop, not punk enough
Rancid is 100% more Reggae than Ska.
Very impressive please don’t actually act on your lyrics 😅
Can't stand skapunk, my friends loved it. Reel Big Fish fucks, though. Two-tone ska, that's my shit.
It don't sound authentic
Rancid had two ska songs. And those were more reggae than ska.
you haven't listened to very much Rancid then.
I suppose it depends on how you define Ska. They obviously fall more into the Ska Punk realm but they had quite a few Ska tunes if you listen to their earlier discography.
Everything sounds pretty good! Bassline could use an actual bassist playing it tho, as it's overly simple. Lyrics are also pretty bad, but a super catchy song 🎵 . LOVE the horn lines and oooos
