    Man 4449 and 844 are just perfect together in my opinion. They raced and doubleheaded together, bet soon something else will happen with both the completion of the 4449s inspection, and 844s updates

    Thanks for the footage of the 3751. It holds a special place in my heart. My grandfather worked on the restorationof the engine and would also be the fireman on occasion. Love the steam

    This is an awesome race! Interesting how this sorta resembles the Thomas & Friends episode Thomas & Bertie's Great Race of Season 1.

    In August and September 1992, Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751 leads a first Santa Fe Employee Special from Los Angeles, California to Chicago, Illinois and return.

    Best trains are the up 844, up 3985, sp 4449, sp 2472, atsf 3751. Love that quintet of steam locomotives!!!!

    I would have been in 6th grade when you recorded the 1989 video. I wish I had known about these steam locomotives running, I would have loved to see that!

    I think the steam locos have a personality, soul, spirit. They're so "alive."!! I love trains, always have, just the steamers though.❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊

    The irony is that if they were to repeat something like this with these two locos, they would most likely be on the opposite tracks. 844 would be on the Palmdale Cutoff, while 4449 would be on the Cajon Sub. Interesting when you think about it.

    I wonder if the 4449 still has is sp 3 chime whistle today because I love that whistle.

    • @okaythen250
      @okaythen250 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don't think so, I can't recall what whistle it has but it sounds like the 844's a bit.

      It's a hancock 3 chime that came from an SP&S challenger. It's on 700 now.

    So If anyone has "Steam to Los Angeles" from Pentrex, this part of the film is my favorite part. Because of 4449's chimes.
    I've been looking everywhere hoping someone got a different vantage point. And now, NOW I've found it

    Perfect trifecta: ATSF 3751, SP 4449 and UP 8444 with original whistles all going to Santa Fe Depot in San Diego.

      The 844 has a different whistle on it now. It has a Big Boys on it, many say it's one of the 4014s old whistles

    How horrible was the traffic for you in the 1989 race and going up to Summit? Also what was the traffic like with 3751?

      RE: 1989 -- I honestly don't remember, I was more concerned with getting to the next spot ahead of them. I knew my way around pretty well and knew most of the back roads. Plus, if I recall, it was a weekday. RE: 3751 -- most of the shots were local to my work, so again, knowledge of side roads came into play.

    Great location at 5” but terrible camera operation. Also it must have been a cheap movie camera with old video tape. To bad you didn’t have a decent 16mm motion picture camera.

    • @craigisaman4124
      @craigisaman4124  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will concede to the camera work, but as I mentioned, this was shot with a shoulder held direct VHS recorder (borrowed from my mother-in-law - all I had was an SLR...) Apparently, Kodak had just started producing consumer-grade hand helds in 1987, so were (probably) hard to come by and exorbitantly expensive.

    • @justahillbilly7777
      @justahillbilly7777 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      4449 wasn’t wearing its SP 6 chime on that run up Cajon. It was a five chime, presumably of CB&Q 2-10-4 origins, though I’m not all to sure about the wheel arrangement of the locomotive the whistle first came off of.

  • @hanshoogendyk2203
    @hanshoogendyk2203 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    the bullshit part is that they put 3! diesels. behind the steam loco....with only some public carrages to pull 1 would have been sufficient insurance!

    • @justahillbilly7777
      @justahillbilly7777 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ease up man. The 3751 was going the entire length of the Southern Transcon from LA to Chicago WITHOUT an auxiliary water tender, so preservation era logic tells you that those diesels were there to make the steamer’s fuel and water last for as long as possible so that they’d be able to cover as much ground as possible before having to top the tender supplies back up.
