Cajon Pass "Great Race" & ATSF 3751 (Long Version, "re-mastered")

  • The first clips are from the "Great Race" (Southern Pacific 4449 and Union Pacific 8444) over Cajon Pass May 8, 1989. This was part of the 50th anniversary celebration for LA's Union Station.
    The second ones are from Santa Fe 3751 pulling the Santa Fe Railway Employee Appreciation Special, August 30, 1992 (Los Angeles - Chicago - Los Angeles). This was it's first distance run after restoration. This footage is from Anaheim, Corona and Riverside, then to Cajon.
    Gotta love the sounds. And the reaction of people at grade crossings who had no idea...
    Keep in mind this was filmed trying to balance a 20-pound shoulder-buster direct-to-tape VHS camera in some slightly precarious positions. Luckily, I knew my way around from years spent chasing.
    I wish I had today's technology back then...
